Went here for brunch a few weeks ago with my boyfriend. Didn't call ahead but we were able to be seated within ten minutes of arriving, on Super Bowl Sunday. They were packed and the staff was busy but clearly had their own flow going. We ordered the $3 mimosas while waiting, which were very good- light and tasty. We decided to order the Smothered Tots and the Corn Cakes. Delicious! The tots were hearty and flavorful. The cakes came with andoulline sausage, which i love, sour cream, black beans and were just plain delicious as a meal. The portions are large but so worth taking the leftovers home. My boyfriend decided to switch up his drink for a $3 Bloody Mary and said it was one of the best he's ever had. Service was attentive. The place is loud and the decor is eclectic. There were so many other things on the menu that we wanted to try. We will be back. read more

This is my husband and I's go to spot especially during the summer since the outside is dog friendly! The beers are decently priced and the good is always good. We love taking our friends and family here when they visit. During the winter, they have some tasty soups too that I will usually pick up to go or come in for dinner. Love this place for lots of reasons: great, thoughtful staff, delightful owner/ mgmt, tasty, filling brunch ( we typically go here on Sunday's cuz it's right around the corner from Fells Point for Second Sunday Flea Market... which you need to go to as well!) and the perfect mix of friendly neighborhood folks with the occasional drop- ins like us. The service is despicable, but the food is impeccable. *Based on several visits Yelp wants me to write more so I'll leave you with this: From appetizers to entrées, to drafts to creative cocktails... Ale Mary's has never disappointed taste buds. However, more often than not we are greeted with grumpy faces and short responses, along with excessive waits between table visits. I am a fan of Ale Mary's simply because you must eat good food before beginning a long night in Fells Point and this should be your first stop. We had everything from Ahi Tuna bites, to crab sliders, to a Korean dish (don't remember the name) and everything was delicious. Service was slow, but on Friday night there's not much you can do about it - enjoy your drink and have your order ready when Mary comes to take it. :-) read more

Holy Craptastic, if ever there was a shitshow, that show would be Ale Mary's. Ale Mary's is what I picture a hangover LOOKS like: a groggy, stank mess. I think I heard about this place back in college and it had been on my bookmarked list for years. I was quite intrigued by this Krispy Kreme bread pudding so we came in one Sunday morning, nice and hungover, for some greasy hangover food but weren't prepared for just how greasy this place actually was. Upon entering, the staff was practically laying around, beating their pud. I don't think anyone even looked up. Guess we'll seat ourselves! Other patrons inside were in sweats and sneakers and I also remembered the place being very small inside and strangely quiet. Moments later, a gruff guy who looked like he'd been taking whiskey shots in his sleep tossed us a couple menus and asked us what we wanted to drink. I asked to see the drink menu and he wouldn't get one and said everything was stored in his head. O...K...., mimosa it is! By the way, don't play games with me and give me an f-ing drink menu when I ask for one. My bf ordered a bloody; 2 bloodys actually, and each one was chunkier than the last. He actually deemed it undrinkable because chunks of celery and onion kept getting stuck in the straw. After my mimosa, I switched to an unoaked chardonnay, which, turns out, was not unoaked and tasted like an old sponge. Later, a female came up and started waiting on us so it was a little unclear who our waiter was. She brought out a different menu; perhaps the dinner menu. We started with the crabby tots. Really excited about them. What came out was a big, fat mess of lard and cheese and greasy potatoes. Huge, oversized portion of slop. We went in strong but ultimately we only managed a few bites before feeling terrible about ourselves. I did, however, want to try a cup of this she-crab soup everyone was raving about. I will say that was actually very very good. Lots of large lump crab bites in a very flavorful broth. In fact, that was the best thing about the entire meal and the one dish with some actual flavor. For our main dish, I was looking for a rueben that I saw online, but turns out the rueben was a turkey rueben, which no one wants in lieu of a pastrami rueben. They really cut corners on costs! So we ordered a couple plates off the brunch menu; my bf tried the the egg sandwich enclosed by grilled donuts and I tried some other egg sandwich, also not memorable. The eggs were made from kind of an egg beater mix; you know, the yellow substance eggs you spoon out at the Golden Corral buffet. The bacon was greasy and fatty, not crispy; the hash was goopy and tasteless; and the grilled donuts were NOT Krispy Kreme, I hate to tell you. They were store-brand bought donuts and what do you think happens when you "grill" a donut? It basically turns into a dry piece of white bread. Not only were these dishes not appetizing, they were verging on being downright gross. And my mom always taught us never to talk about food like that, but there is simply no other word that will better describe this food. Finally, we strapped ourselves in for this Krispy Kreme bread pudding. Aside from the soup, we actually didn't even eat much of our meals at all so we managed to save room for this. We ordered a la mode, at the suggestion of our waitress. What came out? Another goopy mess! "Voted Baltimore's Best Dessert"? Surely you jest. With all that icecream, whipped cream and syrup slopped all over the donuts, you could hardly taste much else. Listen, I'm all for indulging every now and then, but this was gross overindulgence at its worst. It was good, but it was hard to tell where the donuts ended and your self-respect began. This place is gluttony defined. We left ready to hurl and wanting to kill ourselves. The OVERLY casual service and atmosphere actually starts to turn you off. It's no wonder everyone is wearing sweats in this place, you'll leave 2 pounds up after eating here! The kitchen is no more than a short-order kitchen you'd find in Dennys. I shudder to think when the last time they cleaned that grill or walk-in fridge. Gordon Ramsay, want to give it a go with your white gloves? Ultimately, the food lacks flavor, polish and structure and would be better served in a homeless shelter somewhere. This isn't hangover food, this is black-out drunk food. read more

I have to give myself a nice pat on the back for finding this place on Yelp. It was a tremendous find, and it easily exceeded all my expectations. As we pulled up to the restaurant, I immediately knew I was going to love it. The nice corner location looked neighborhood-y and inviting. We found a free parking spot right away, 2 cars behind a bright yellow SUV with "ALE MARY" on its license plate. You've got to love that! 2:30 in the afternoon on a weekday is not exactly "primetime" in the restaurant business, so we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. 2 gentlemen at the bar were way into whatever soccer game was on TV to care about the two out-of-towners who happened to saunter in. We found a nice table in the middle of the bar area and sat down. The theme of this bar is nuns and beer, naturally. There are unholy images of nuns drinking beer and pictures of halos placed on various alcoholic beverage containers. It's tacky and comical, which, I am sure, is what the owners were going for. It's definitely a place you won't soon forget. I'd be remiss not to say THANK YOU to our amazing bartender/server/tour guide. I know he wasn't busy, but he was incredibly friendly and incredibly helpful. He recommended a couple of dishes and a couple of places to visit. He even used our iPhones to point to various places on the map. Definitely 5-star service! When do you ever hear anyone say about a bar? While my friend was gorging on a never-ending and rather pungent plate of mussels, I enjoyed the Ahi Tuna Steak Sandwich (blackened, rare). The sandwich came with chips, because I chose not to upgrade to tater tots for $1 more. That might have been a mistake, because the chips tasted like ruffles, and their tater tots are, apparently, world renowned. The ahi tuna sandwich rivaled any ahi tuna sandwich you'd have in a fancy restaurant for 3x the price. The fish was fresh and cooked to perfection. They understand what "rare, blackened" means, which is, pardon the pun, rare these days. If I lived in Baltimore, Ale Mary's would quickly become my Cheers. read more

I was a huge fan of Ale Mary's until tonight. I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore regular, but I've driven across town repeatedly to patronize the place and would have continued to do so. My issue isn't a passing or petty thing, it's a huge issue in my book. It's a poison pill and I will never go back after tonight. I went in with my wife through the main entrance and worked my way through the back. There were no seats available, so we went out through the back exit and then stopped for a few seconds to figure out where we would go next because we didn't want to wait for a table. One of the servers came out and said a table should open up in about 5 to 10 minutes and that he'd take care of us if we just hung out at the bar. I think most people would be swayed by this, so we went back in. We ordered two beers at the bar and when I tried to give this server my card, he just smiled and waved my card away, telling me it was fine. I even tried to give this server a tip on the side and he declined. I thought this was pretty cool because at the time, it seemed like he was concerned with keeping people happy and making sure as many people got tables as possible. We were eventually seated and had dinner. When the check showed up (from a different server), those beers were on the tab. I was able to flag the original guy down and explained to him that it seemed like those two beers shouldn't be on there. He said he'd take care of us. Thinking the issue was resolved and that the beers would be taken off at the end, we put our card down. It came back and the beers were still on the tab. I have a HUGE problem with this. The guy clearly made us think he was giving us two beers on the house several times, and that turned out to be a complete ruse. I in no way felt like I was entitled to free drinks, but the server absolutely made it seem like he was giving them to us on the house. So congrats to this guy for getting two people to stay at the place when they were considering going somewhere else, but that stunt cost them all the future business we would have given them, and on top of that, I'll have nothing but bad things to say about the place to anyone who asks. When you mix some really great food with great people and locals... you get Ale Mary's. This place will make you rethink a few things during your experience: 1. Tater Tots 2. Krispie Kreme Doughnuts 3. Possibilities of Gastropub dishes? Ale Mary's has a quirky decor with crosses along with other Catholic influenced details (name says it all) and some other awesome randomness (leg lamp from A Christmas Carol). The bar is pretty small and can get crowded pretty fast. The table are usually open, but there are only 6 or 7 with multiple chairs, but stay.. WAIT and order these things 1. Tater Tots in ANY form - it will be like a trip back down memory lane to those good ol' days when tots were awesome just as they are.. but when you order them here its like a GREAT trip down memory lane becuase the flavors have matured with you. 2. Krispie Kreme Bread Pudding- all i can say is OH MY GOD.. what a true indulgence. You think it will be over the top disgusting greasy or cloyingly sweet, but NO you are wrong.. The doughnuts absorb that custard and becomes light and fluffy swirled with cinnamon and ice cream to balance it all out - AMAZING.. This is a MUST have. 3. Mussles - Mr. Boh's Mussels. The perfect balance of sweet brine flavor and clean acidity from wine and tomaotes... MUST try. I personally LOVE mussels and this place has a REALLY good dish. I've had the other dishes and while some may underwhelm in the light of the other amazing dishes I've had, but hey.... this is the neighborhood bar that does a lot of things right. read more

Sloppy Tots - tater tots covered in cheese and smothered in sloppy joe - are a trainwreck on a plate, but possibly the Best Bar Food Ever. Crispy, crunchy, salty, cheesy, covered in ground beef and sweet BBQ tomato sauce. Yeah, the tots thing is getting a bit long in the tooth, but the combined wrong-ness and deliciousness of this plate of anti-health-food makes up for it. Draft pints of Resurrection - ding! Samuel Smith's organic hard cider - ding! Chewy fruit candies in the holy-water font by the side door - ding, ding! Angus burgers are more than acceptable. The salmon BLT my sister-in-law sat down to was a knife-n-forker. My burger came perfectly medium-rare, exactly as ordered. Ale Mary's is the slightly scruffier corner bar cousin to Annabel Lee's cozy pub. Service is surprisingly good, and laid back. And if there's a better dessert than the Krispy Cream bread pudding with vanilla ice cream, it'd probably be dangerous in the wrong hands. I went to Ale Mary's for dinner after the bar across the street suspended their food menu for the night. I had high hopes but was not super pleased with what i got. I ordered the burger after the waitress told me it was good and got it as i always do, medium well. well it came out more rare than anything else.. unfortunately i took a bite before i realized and have not been feeling that great today.. When i made the staff aware they threw the same burger back on the grill instead of making a new one which rubbed me the wrong way. If it wasnt for the fact that i was starving i wouldn't have accepted that. Otherwise the service was fine, our waitress was really nice and knowledgeable about the menu. Ah, it's places like these that make me wish I lived closer to Bmore. I'd liken Ale Mary's to Annabel Lee Tavern's fraternal, dizygotic (see, someone WAS paying attention in biology class), slightly chubbier twin. Not identical, but a lot of good similarities. Cozy interior, easygoing staff, excellent beer at fair prices, and food that makes you happy. Not happy in a refined, "I do say, that black truffle oil had the most delightful and intriguing aroma," kind of way, but more of a "I've eaten so much I can barely breathe, someone please put me in a wheelbarrow and cart me over to the nearest bed" kind of way. Much has been made about some of the more famous items on the menu and my two voracious dining companions and I set out to try them all. Here are some notes: * Loaded tots: 4/5 stars. Very, very good hot. Could've done without the powdered Parmesean cheese though. Not so good cold. * Crabby Nun, aka the crab cake sammich: 3.5/5 stars. Sky-high expectations set by some of the other reviews not quite met. Good proportion of crab, nice texture, and pretty tasty; but not spectacular. * Steak sandwich: 3/5 stars. Fabulous flavor, but the meat was on the tough side and a bit overcooked. * PEI Mussels: 4/5 stars. Hard to go wrong with a tremendous portion of fresh mussels steamed in beer, garlic, parsley and tomato. Yum. * Resurrection Ale on tap: 5/5 stars. Can't get enough. Would drink my way out of a bathtub of this stuff. * Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding a la mode: 5/5 stars. I think every other review on this page mentions this dessert. And rightly so. + Ice cream? Epic. * Bathroom: 5/5. Critical after consuming all of the aforementioned goodness. As Shannon R. points out, surprisingly clean and comfortable. Ale Mary's seemed like a decent choice.... I drove by and it looked like a corner local pub... Almost didn't even go in. Didn't look like a place where good food would be served.... but boy was I wrong..... and good thing I read enough reviews and decided to park and walk in... Here's what we had: Crab Cakes Benedict... Wow I would almost say that this was the best crab cakes I've ever had... but i just had Faidley's the day before and that was the shiattt.... Ale Mary's version was pretty damn close and having it for brunch done benedict style was fantabulous..... The home fries were seasoned and cooked to crispy perfection.... What a meal.... Drunken Sunday Tots... Double Wow Tater tots with scrambled eggs (at least 4 I would say), lots of cheese and a delicious crispy flavorful bacon... all smothered with sausage gravy... OMG..... who thought of this creation???? superb and so filling that almost 1/3 was leftover. Maybe it was the guilt of all the fat or that the arteries couldn't handle it anymore :) jk Enjoyed and shared both choices above with a 16 oz mimosa for $3 bucks... yep $3 bucks... It's OJ, seltzer and I think vodka but it's alcohol and it's $3 bucks..... There was a neon sign that pitched the krispy kreme bread pudding.... and as a fan of both items.. it was a lay up... gotta have it but got it to go.... Didn't match the hype... The Stanger made a wrong turn on the way to Talladega and somehow ended up in Baltimore. You dudes are thinking, no way, but yes way, The Stanger doesn't do GPS or ask for directions, those are for Commies and women.... So Stanger is cruising the 'Stang through Fells Point itching for a Miller Lite. The 'Stange runs on gas, but the Stanger runs on Miller Lite and the Stanger needed to refuel. In fact, Stanger is refueling now....ahhhhh So the Stanger sees a homeless man howling at the moon on a corner, and the Stanger figures, must be a hell of a bar if they have their own man/wolf (Note: Man/Wolf was not associated with the bar). Stanger strolls on in to Ale Mary's and wants Miller Lite draft pronto. Megan behind the bar says, "Stanger, bro, we don't have Miller Lite on tap." The Stanger stood in stunned silence for 15 -20 minutes.... The Stanger settled for some local fancy beers that got the job done. Stanger was even allowed to taste these fancy beers out of fine stemware (which pisses sober Stanger off!!!!). Megan and the staff were some of the most friendly people Charm City had to offer. They do serve food and have drinks, but really what else could you want. Burger night is good, and it's a great local bar, now back to the dessert. I'm unsure how people can consume the food here, and I'm not kidding. The selection here is below pub quality, I only took a chance on a caesar salad and Mary's mussels because we were seated and already had beers in hand..and i was hungry. The lettuce in the salad was universally brown, just horrid. The mussels tasted off in a questionable seafood kind of way, so much so I didn't dare take a chance on more than two. The draft beer selection is so limited it just cant redeem Ale Mary's. I usually can appreciate the quirks of a dive, but this was just the worst. We were out of there in a half hour. read more

I wouldn't get brunch there again. First, I hate when people put ice in a "mimosa" - especially when it tastes like sprite and tang. Next, I got eggs benedict and the eggs were just tossed into vinegar and butter - so the whole plate tasted like greasy vinegar. The yolks were fully cooked and the "fresh veggies" on the side were actually oily green beans. They took the whole order off without me even mentioning anything - but I just hate when my brunch stinks. It's like someone being rude to your before your first cup of coffee in the morning. Baltimore is a city rife with neighbourhood bars... and Ale Mary's is easily one of the best. We started with the grilled wings (they're effing amazing). Lacey got a cheesesteak, which in my eyes was almost anathema to order in B'More. I got the classic Crab Cake Sandwich. It was heavenly... non pasteurized lump meat... flavorful, barely any filler, topped with Old Bay mayo. I would easily kill for a place to make these the right way in Denver. Side Note to Denver area chefs: Stop putting onions and corn and cilantro and weird random chef bullshit ingredients in your crab cakes. You're being pretentious pricks. It was especially great because we watched Michael Phelps (a Baltimore kid) win his first Gold live at the bar. It was really cool to be a part of a great pub crowd, drinking, cheering and having an all around good time; welcoming any who walked in and wanted to watch. Half the beers on tap rotate, and they have good taste... Franziskaaner, Chimay White. And my favourite thing? The service. I love it when a server has a very clear understanding of the working relationship between patron and server/'tender. Dining out is a mutually beneficial relationship. Not unlike egrets (those little birds on the backs of Rhino's), if you are good to me, I am good to you and the cycle continues. Some may be put off by the underlying religious blasphemy of the place, but it should be taken in stride really. The owner, Mary, is a local and has done right by her hometown with this bar. You'll find the beer menu displayed in a hymnal display board on the wall. They also have/had fireballs in the wells by the door and chalices that you can use for your beer. It's an interesting twist to the bars in its rank that all look the same. The beers are GREAT, both their own and the selection they have on tap and in bottles. They focus mostly on Belgians and heavy beers, but they have Mary's pale ale which will suit those not up for the other styles they have. Now the food. All I can say is WOW. The ruben dip is fantastic (think a ruben sandwich as a bread bowl dip). Instead of fries they serve tater tots. Their crab cake sandwich is good too as are their wings (grilled and large). The thankful turkey sandwich is good too- everything that is good about Turkey day rolled into a sandwich. Some of the food items give homage to the place they used to work- Degroens- before it shut down and Theo moved back to Germany (now that bar was the best). Warning: By far the worst bar food I've had in Baltimore. Save yourself time and money, by picking up a case of beer and frozen dinner. I'm surprised this place has 4 stars. I've come to the conclusion that most of the people were drunk when they wrote their reviews, or just accustomed to horrible food. If you love ramen noodles and kraft mac and cheese with a twist. Everyone's already mentioned the wish-I-had-worn-cargo-pants tots selection, the super cool krispy kream pudding and the friendly, unpretentious atmosphere. What else to add? Well... If you have extra room after all that (and presumably some ale), be sure to make some space for the cream of crab soup. 4.5 stars We had a friend who was in the Baltimore area for a wedding and asked if we could get together for dinner. We live in Alexandria, VA and decided that it would be easier if we came to Baltimore rather than making him figure out the way to get to DC. So I jumped on Yelped and started a search for a laid back restaurant that wouldn't mind if we sat for hours after dinner and just hung out. Ale Mary's rose to the top of the list. We arrived at 7:30 pm on a Sunday and the place was busy. The bar was full and the tables were about 75% taken. The first thing I was told by the bartender was that it would probably be 10 minutes before anyone could help us - they had one bartender, one waitress and one cook on duty (and later a bus boy/dishwasher appeared). I appreciated his honesty and we sat. It actually was only 3 or 4 minutes before the waitress arrived and took our drink order. She had the drinks delivered promptly and took our dinner order. It took a good 25 minutes before our dinner arrived but, again, we expected it. It was also ok because we are enjoying the impressive beer menu. Dinner was great. I had the open faced steak sandwich and it was cook perfectly medium-rare. Very tasty too. I also had a side of the loaded tater tots that I had read about on Yelp. It's been a long time since I have had tater tots. Good stuff. My wife had the veggie wrap and she said it was great. Our friend had the crab cake sandwich - which was huge - and he seemed to be impressed. We skipped dessert. Beer: I loved the banana bread beer (don't remember the name - but there was only one of these on the menu). Our friend liked the Holy Ail (actually Holy Grail.... yes, the Monty Python one). We also tried the Motor Oil beer........... ummm, we didn't finish it. It was very thick and heavy. It's probably fine for those who love really dark beer. We ordered it more out of curiosity. I need to add this: the bartender (maybe he was also the manager that night?) apologized and thanked us several times for being patient while we waited for our food. I appreciated his apology. The good news for everyone was that we picked this place because we knew we would be there for a long time. We ended up staying for almost 3 hours. I'm sure that had we been in a hurry to get someplace I would have been upset but if that were the case I probably wouldn't have stayed when we walked in. Last thought: we left Ale Mary's and said "We wish we had a cool, intimate bar like this in our neighborhood". I would go back if I'm ever in the Fells Point area again. read more

Great place for good drinks and yummy food, both fairly priced. Small inside, but makes atmosphere cozy. Came in on Saturday night with my boyfriend. Had some vino and beers. Ordered Boh Mussels for an app., they were really flavorful and the portion was huge! We ordered the chicken sandwich and the burger. Long story short: the kitchen misplaced our slip and our food was very late. The staff was very kind to take the burger off the check and provide us with free shots and a round of free drinks. We were pleased with our night there and will continue to come back often! read more
