My family recently had a large memorial lunch for my uncle who passed. The golf club is gorgeous…read more It sets up on a hill and offers sweeping views of the greens surrounding it. The parking lot is massive, so parking wasn't an issue. The golf club itself is so large. It can hold multiple large events at one time. This is both a pro and a con. We were in one of the pretty large ballrooms as our party was nearly 200. The ballroom next to us was having a baby shower, and while it sounded like they were having a great time, and I love that for them, the music was so loud that we were struggling to talk over it in our event, which was a more somber occasion, so it really dampened our experience. While I don't believe our event was any more important than the other event, I do believe golf club staff should have a bit more of a pulse on the impact of simultaneous events on each each other. For food, we had chicken in with marsala sauce or piccata sauce, roast beef, roasted broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, rolls with butter, roasted potatoes, and salad. I tried everything but the beef and would give the food three stars overall. The staff were very attentive and seemed to have good attitude and be working hard. They offered to clear my plate 1000 times. Instead of being annoyed since I was still eating, I just appreciated them doing their job diligently.

I pictured myself sitting at a counter with a hot cup of coffee and a fresh donut. Unfortunately, the reality didn't match the photos. The shop itself is a bit dingy and dim, and the counter shown in pictures was blocked with boxes and plastic--no place to sit. I arrived before 11 AM on a Friday and the selection was already pretty picked over. The one worker got swamped when a crowd came in, and the tight space made the whole experience feel rushed. I ordered two donuts (cheap, which was nice), but they were tossed in a bag together with no divider, so the frosting stuck together which made it a pain to get them out of the bag to eat. No napkins were given. Fortunately, I remembered to ask for some. One donut was chocolate with sprinkles, the other had buttercream filling with white frosting. Both were decent, nothing amazing. I tried to sit outside, but the chairs were old and dirty. They looked liked they came from an old elementary school. To top it off, someone came up trying to sell me a "$600" motorcycle helmet for $100. I decided to make a quick exit. If I lived nearby, I might grab a dozen to-go, but it's not worth a special trip. Just average overall.

The Lake Inn has come a long way from what it used to be…read more There was a time when the recipes had lost their way, the food quality had declined, and the attention to preparation and service felt like it was slowly slipping out the window. Even getting there felt like something out of a low-budget horror movie, navigating a narrow dirt road just to reach the building. Today, the entire experience feels refreshed. The old approach road has been replaced with a proper two-lane drive that wraps around the lake, complete with separate parking and an easy walk to the restaurant. For boaters, the docks still provide convenient access by water. The atmosphere keeps much of the rustic lakeside character that made the place appealing in the first place. The cabin feel remains, while the shanty-style bar and patio have been modernized with a tiki-inspired touch. The music stays at a comfortable volume, and the crowd tends to be made up of regulars and retirees who are there to relax rather than compete for attention. On the occasions conversations get louder, the lake itself seems to take over, with the sound of the water providing a natural calm. The food has improved considerably. At the end of the day, it's still Lapeer and it's still a bar. The local food scene has always suffered from a strange contradiction; people want fine dining experiences on a budget that barely supports the basics. As a result, many places compensate with oversized portions, excessive salt, and menu shortcuts designed to keep drinks flowing rather than showcase culinary talent. The Lake Inn isn't trying to be something it isn't, and that's part of its appeal. What it does well, it does very well. The sandwiches are solid, the salads are fresh, and the overall food quality has noticeably improved from years past. More importantly, the experience has improved. The secluded lakeside setting creates a sense of peace that's increasingly hard to find. Between the water, the docks, the patio, and the relaxed crowd, it's one of the few places where you can sit back, people watch, and enjoy a slower pace without feeling packed into another noisy atmosphere. In Polite Summary: What ultimately stands out is the setting. The secluded lakeside location creates a peaceful atmosphere that's increasingly difficult to find. It's a great place to enjoy a meal, watch the boats drift by, and spend a little time disconnected from the noise of everyday life. I'll mark this a safe space for Autistic and Neurodivergent individuals... just don't argue with the staff that confuses our deliberate words. Downside: They didn't comp the overly dried/burnt baked spaghetti I forced the kid to stop consuming because it wasn't worth it. (Offered to pay for what he ate) Paid for another meal in addition to replace it.
