I rode my motorcycle 40 minutes to check out Max's Donut Shop after seeing their mouthwatering photos online. I pictured myself sitting at a counter with a hot cup of coffee and a fresh donut. Unfortunately, the reality didn't match the photos. The shop itself is a bit dingy and dim, and the counter shown in pictures was blocked with boxes and plastic--no place to sit. I arrived before 11 AM on a Friday and the selection was already pretty picked over. The one worker got swamped when a crowd came in, and the tight space made the whole experience feel rushed. I ordered two donuts (cheap, which was nice), but they were tossed in a bag together with no divider, so the frosting stuck together which made it a pain to get them out of the bag to eat. No napkins were given. Fortunately, I remembered to ask for some. One donut was chocolate with sprinkles, the other had buttercream filling with white frosting. Both were decent, nothing amazing. I tried to sit outside, but the chairs were old and dirty. They looked liked they came from an old elementary school. To top it off, someone came up trying to sell me a "$600" motorcycle helmet for $100. I decided to make a quick exit. If I lived nearby, I might grab a dozen to-go, but it's not worth a special trip. Had to make a quick trip to the Lapeer area, so looked for a bakery. Max's donuts definitely came through with lemon and raspberry paczki! These were "fatties"- a must for a good paczki. The lemon passed the 2 bite test (it should only to take 2 to reach the filling) and it was so very tasty. The raspberry was a 3 biter, fill was slightly off center, but it was loaded-fruity, not too sweet. Definitely worth a trip. The search for paczki continues. Don't miss out. read more

No one is allowed inside, they do have a nice system going for them, though. You can see most of the donuts through the door and you just shout which ones and how many. I went for the common ones my first time around, the double-chocolate was my favorite but they were all delicious. The glazed ones were good as well, very heartwarming. I can't wait to try some of the "Apple Fritters" and "Bear-claws" they have available. This is my go to spot before work now, I recommend everyone to try it. read more

The donuts are always fresh and amazing!! Maxs donuts is soo dang good that I actually travel from afar-it takes me a good 45 minutes each way but sooooo worth it! I also love that the minute I step into Maxs it's got that old school donut shop feel about it! But honestly the best part is how amazing the staff is! I've learned through the years that if I'm going there for very specific flavors..it is best to call ahead..they will do what they can to accommodate you (if it's at all possible)..worst case scenario, you preorder your donuts and pick up by the next day! read more

Max's is amazing. It is run (from my knowledge, and being there a couple of times) is run by a little Asian family. The women behind the counter has horrid English and ' whah' chyo whan'' but she is amazing. The bake-goods are fantastic. You can see her family work in the back. Their English is a little better. Just a great little donut shop. Wide variety of pastries and a cool old fashioned coffee shop counter. The donuts are delicious and large. Can't think of a single flavor I haven't liked. I've been a resident of Lapeer, and I always see several older men at that shop talking, eating and drinking coffee there daily and even though their donut shop isn't really updated and it's pretty small, we still love the place. I would rather go there in a heartbeat for donuts than Tim Hortons. Not to mention, Max's Paczki are the bomb!!! I am a doughnut lover and Max's is is the only place in Lapeer to get a GOOD DOUGHNUT! They are homemade and made daily. Get there early if you want to be sure you get your favorite as they tend to sell out by 11:00; even earlier on the weekends. The staff are very kind and courteous. They have the best buttercream doughnut I have ever had. I take doughnuts to my customers to my company's branches all over Michigan. yes, they are hard to understand sometimes but the donuts are amazing. They are high quality for a low price. My only tip is; if you want a huge variety to choose from, you must go in the morning.
