Kalaveras - Taco Birrria so delicious.

We've always wanted to try Kalaveras but never gave them a shot for one reason or another. While in…read moreLong Beach, we finally decided to take the plunge and give them a try. Since we were at the convention center across the street, Kalaveras is really convenient if you're around downtown Long Beach. We were seated immediately and had our orders fairly quickly. We had a long day of walking around, so we cooled off with a Mojito and La Katrina mocktail. I ordered the Kala Burrito while wifey ordered the 1 Enchilada and 1 Chile Relleno combination. Basic chips and salsa were brought out while we waited. Our waitress accidentally forgot my wife's mocktail and brought us two Mojitos. She immediately realized her mistake and gave us the second Mojito for free while she went back for the mocktail. Honestly that stood out as really good service. Naturally a free drink sounds good to most everyone, but the fact that she recognized her mistake and rectified it as soon as it happened speaks volumes of her professionalism. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time for being a pretty busy Friday night. My wife's combination plate was great with the Enchilada de Mole being the standout. My burrito was huge in size and very filling (I could've done without the fries in the burrito but that's just a personal preference and no biggie). Kalaveras can be slightly pricey but it's a good place to get some grub and drinks after a long day on your feet. Catch up with friends, go on date night, or have a family outing - Kalaveras is the spot for any occasion! They're open late, have lunch specials, daily specials, Saturday & Sunday brunch, happy hour, etc. They also offer a complimentary photo card if you want to commemorate your outing!

The food also came out surprisingly fast. I ordered the pollo saltado, which I would give a 4/5. The chicken and overall dish were good, but I wasn't a big fan of the flavor of the thin French fries that came with it. I think the dish would be even better with different fries. Overall, good service, quick food, and a nice experience. I'd come back and try something else next time!

We came by on a Friday night before a show at the Grammy Museum. We parked in a private lot a couple of blocks away on Georgia that charged $21.65. I made a reservation since we were coming on a Friday night. I was surprised that there were many open tables when we arrived. We were greeted right away and seated at one of Edwin's tables. He was absolutely great! Very friendly and personable, with a great sense of humor. We'd been interested in a couple of items on the happy hour menu. Unlike the Santa Monica location, the happy hour items are only available in the bar and patio, not the main restaurant. Edwin did check to see if we could order the flautas and we were able to, however it was a couple of dollars more expensive than if we'd been sitting in the other room. That would be my only disappointment with this locaion. We were served delicious, fresh chips with bean dip and salsa right away. The flautas were really good, and the drinks were great. Overall, the pre-show evening at Sol Agave was enjoyable. We will ask for Edwin again when we come back in the future.

What saved the experience were the drinks and dessert. Those were the highlights, but the food didn't give me a reason to return. It's one of those places I'm glad I tried once, but I won't be back. With such limited choices, I honestly wonder how it'll hold up long term. Overall, 4/10 won't be back!

The bartender was super attentive, and she was always there so it was very easy to order! I ordered two short rib tacos, which the tacos were $1 off, and the mole tots, which was probably $4 off? Pretty worth visiting during happy hour! Service was very quick. There were also other few people ordering food besides drinks at the bar. Starting off with the tacos, the short rib was very nice! Very soft, tender, and flavorful. You can taste that they put amount of hours to preparing the meat for it. I just wished they added more condiments to the taco cause it was just cilantro and onion. I wish there was like salsa, radish, etc. It's kind of pricey compared to a street taco, but the quality of the meat was definitely higher. Also the mole tots, this was pretty good, although I wish there was more cheese. First few bites were pretty good, but the more you eat it, it does taste quite overwhelming from the black salsa. I wish there was also more toppings to it too. Overall, dining at the bar during happy hour was very chill! The bartender was also very nice and welcoming. Saw a DJ was setting up, but didn't get to see him play when I was dining around 6:30pm.

We went during an off time so peak times I would expect a wait. We really blew our diets but it was worth it. We shared a small order of fries topped with chorizo, chipotle mayo, crumbled cheese, and raw jalapeno. It was soooo good and the small order was perfect for two without ruining your appetite. For my entree I had the Navajo taco which was a giant fry bread topped with red chile beef, beans, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and chipotle aioli. This was a true masterpiece of flavors. The fry bread was like a savory funnel cake flavor. Crunchy exterior and fluffy cloud like interior. The beef was melt in your mouth tender. My wife had hers with ground beef, potato, and green chile. They had a lot of different protein choices. Should have stopped at this point but they had a pumpkin pie filling stuffed sopapilla. It was made to order so it took awhile and came out steaming hot. It was served with two scoops of ice cream so it's perfect for sharing. It was pure heaven and we devoured it. Service was great but these ladies were doing everything. Taking orders, cleaning tables, packing up orders, putting final touches on foods, washing dishes. It was crazy yet they always kept a smile on their faces through the chaos. My wife and I cannot wait to try more items on the menu! Worth the drive!

It was okay, but definitely not Hatch chilies. Hatch chilies are now in season so they could have used them. The sopapillas were just like in Santa Fe so 3 stars were raised to 4. I guess a flight to New Mexico is in order if you want a real New Mexican meal. Not worth the long drive, but they tried.

From the moment we walked in, the host was very friendly and welcoming. Our server, Natasha, was awesome! Her recommendations were spot on, and I'm so glad we went with all of her suggestions. We started with the queso fundido and birria empanadas, and both were delicious. For our main dishes, we had the chicken enchiladas and aguachiles, which were also great. For drinks, we had the Smoked Old Fashioned and the Diosa & Co. The presentation was easily a 10/10, and the drinks tasted just as good as they looked. Overall, I can't say enough good things about our experience. Natasha was very attentive throughout the entire night--we never once had to look around for her or wait to get her attention. Great food, great drinks, beautiful atmosphere, and excellent service. We'll definitely be coming back, and hopefully we get Natasha as our server again
