Inbetween all of the food pushed under our noses during aperitivo we were also keen to try some cutting edge Milan cuisine! Having review a number of blogs and websites a name that came up repeatedly was Al Pont de Ferr. Located along a canal this quaint spot is was unassuming from the outside - with the exception of the window that looks on into the industrious kitchen. Having spent the morning exploring the Pinotecca de Brera we arrived slightly later than intended just after 2pm, as such sadly we weren't able to have the full tasting menu. No matter. For the lunchtime diner they also have a menu offering 2 plates for €20, so we decided to order 4 and share. My chum is gluten free something which posed a challenge at times in Milan, not here - not only did the waiter ask if we had intolerances prior to ordering he then appeared with a GF bread basket for her (cue a very excited girl when she got to have a breadstick for the first time in 15 or so years) To our order: - Mozzarella with candied fig and tomatoes - Fillet of rabbit - Tasting of asparagus with fondue and hens egg yolk - Filet of cod with risotto! Words don't really do this justice. Just look at the pictured and enjoy - it was a really incredible meal. The wow-factor didn't stop there. Having seen other diners enjoy deserts best described as art we were ready to the same. But... oh oh....the raspberry paradise key element is gluten based....sad face! she offered a tasting of the sorbets and she decided to still have the matched wine with it. What they came to us was a surprise. Almost the same dish presented beautifully with extra od the gluten free elements...including an amazing raspberry meringue, a sugar glass raspberry with liquid centre and the stunning sorbet! WOW!!! The desert mine matched was as good as a match as I have ever had, the balance was spot on. The lovely manageress offered us an additional glass on the house of another desert wine! Again it was just perfect! For our last meal in Milan we couldn't have asked for anything more! This was a first class dining experience from start to finish!!

This place was impressive. A Michelin-restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere, excellent service, brilliant food, and affordable prices. By affordable prices, I mean affordable by international Michelin-standards. Dinner and wine will cost you from 50-75 € per person depending on which menu and wine you choose, which in my opinion is worth every cent. The dishes are interesting, as it feels you are part of a scientific experience when you eat there. Some of the courses were classic, however there are several courses you will have no idea what you are eating. In true Heston Blumenthal-style, they create culinary artworks which you will not understand until you dig in. An experience well worth your while when in Milan.

This place was just OK. It is in the very young and hipsterish canal area, and I think I am outside that age group by a generation. I really did not enjoy climbing over and around groups of 20-somethings drinking like fish and smoking like chimneys. Al Pont de Ferr is a pretty little restaurant nestled within this rather unappealing area. Service is indifferent but not to the point of impoliteness. The menu is written in the chef's somewhat pretentious attempt at doing something different and humorous, but not successfully. I started with a beautiful composed plate of raw fish, foie gras, hazelnuts and pink grapefruit (described on the menu as "Il mosaico di ricciola cruda, foie-gras e quadretti di pompelmo ed arance"). It was lovely to look at, and fresh enough, but nothing inspired. My dining companion had the sardines in a sweet-and-sour onion sauce, which she pronounced to be tasty. I had the "36-hour" lamb, which was quite delicious and was served with a potato puree that seemed to have a 2:1 butter-to-potato ratio. I don't remember the other main course. We did not stay for dessert. It was just OK - would not go back again.

The best of a night at several bars on the Navigli. Read my profile and my reviews, you'll find…read morethat I am a pretty experienced booze hound. Pinch is a total replica of American hipster craft cocktail bars, in Milan. The bartenders wear suspenders and do tricks with shakers. I'm waiting for an ironic mustache, preferably like the Moretti guy has. The drinks are exceptional. When I was there, they had one made of green tomatoes and mountain pine liqueur that was a taste party in my mouth. The aperitivo snacks are also really excellent, a small tray of various interesting crunchy things. No potato chips -- we're talking samosas in wonton wrappers with sweet chili sauce, Indian curry rice, a ham-arugula roll, and baba ghanoush. My second drink didn't quite match the first, but it was close. Also, the only bar in Milan that gave me *zero* grief about wanting a simple glass of tap water. In fact, they just give you one. Mega bonus points for that. I'm sick of paying for "aqua panna Toscana" that I neither need nor want. Been drinking Milan tap water in my hotel room for four days now. It's fine. Pour it on. Food offerings from the regular menu are a little hit or miss, but on the other hand, I had kind of stuffed myself with aperitivo. Had I been hungry, might've been a different story.

And yet I thought this Milanese neighborhood was only…read morefilled with bars with bad & cheap drinks, loud music and greasy aperitivo food (well, there are plenty of bars like that but thankfully not all of them). Pinch is a new bar right in Ripa di Porta Ticinese, not in the pedestrian part of the Naviglio, which means they don't have outside seating - except for the tables at the windows. It has a retro vibe, as if you entered a 1920s bar, dim lights, soft 1920's music; elegant but not ostentatious atmosphere. The cocktails list has about 15 signature cocktails, all with an explanation of the alcoholic level (medium or high), taste (fresh, spicy, bitter, etc.) and of course the ingredients, classic cocktails with a twist, made extremely well, with good ingredients. They also have a food menu but I didn't check it out since we were there for the aperitivo - which then turned into after-dinner drinks. I had the "South of the Border" with tequila, chartreuse vert, lime juice, sugar syrup and fresh mint, it was fresh and delicious, then I had another one and another one... just to be sure they were made perfectly ;) For the aperitivo, our cocktails were 8 euro each and the waiter (who looked like Robert Pattinson) brough a small tray with some snacks: rice and salad in small glasses, chips, mini-sandwiches and a couple of vol-au-vents - not enough to fill our stomachs completely but also not the average greasy aperitivo food. Nice staff, a full bar with quality bottles and clean bathrooms complete the experience. Too bad it's far from my house, but worth the subway trip back!

To start, my friend and I tried the red mullet with chestnut creme and the spicy duck with pumpkin fritter. Both dishes were delicious but I especially liked the duck. The depth of flavor in both the tender meat and the fritters made for an auspicious start to the meal. We followed up by splitting the Spaghettoni "Benedetto Cavalieri". I can tell why it never leaves the menu. So simple, but perfectly executed. Finally, the pork belly. The star of this dish was the celeriac cream. So refreshing next to the heavy pork belly. The food was great but what really stood out was how nice everyone was! The service in the well-appointed dining room was top notch with wine advice and care to describe each ingredient, but the folks at Belè went even above this. In a careless error, I left my phone at the restaurant and it was too late to retrieve it before an early flight the next afternoon. The restaurant helped me get it shipped back and stayed in contact to make sure I received it. Go for the food, stay for the wonderful people, and check for your phone before you leave!

The menu was very cute with descriptions of each option with cute cartoon sketches of the ingredients. We enjoyed all the courses! The menu may be seasonal. I loved the first app of pears and leeks. I loved my taglioni with truffle. My partner enjoyed his goat cheese risotto. For our entrees, we both thought the duck and the steak were phenomenal. I would definitely come back here again in the future if I find myself in Milan again.

Be ready when the waitress comes because this spot can be quite busy and they have a lot of ground to cover. Semi-pro tip: Whatever the question asked, the correct answer is "Si!" (this worked for me!) The salami and cheese appetizer was wonderful, with at least four kinds of sliced, flavorful preserved meat and wonderful cheeses including handmade, fresh mozzarella. In fact, when you add on the huge, free basket of focaccia and other types of bread, the appetizer alone is enough for four people. As for pizza, the dish here is not the thin and crispy style available elsewhere in Milan. Instead, it is a huge pillowy slice with whatever toppings you select. The small slice is massive and cannot easily be consumed unless you are very hungry. Alternatively, you can take as much time as you need since, in common Italian fashion, there is no rush. Savor and enjoy. Finally, for the ultimate in taste and texture, try the gnocchi with four cheeses. It's creamy, cheesy goodness with a slight pungent bite of Gorgonzola mixed in. This definitely blows away every Mac and Cheese on the entire planet. Bam. Done! Winner!!!

We wanted to take our guests to the Navigli district to show them the river, have a great meal and experience the nightlife after the sun went down. I emailed several restaurants along the Navigli a few days before to ask if they would be able to accommodate 28 people. For one reason or another, I couldn't get anyone to take us! But Mattia Bilotta at the Asso Di Fiori - Osteria dei Formaggi emailed me back right away and was happy to have us. He asked that we pick a few antipasti, a few primi Piatti, a few secondi piati and a few desserts so that they could be ready in advance. When we got off the subway, there was a lot of graffiti on the walls of the buildings and I was worried that I was in a bad part of town as we walked up to the restaurant. But once we reached the river from the subway, I felt better about it. And when I entered the restaurant to let them know that we were here, there was a huge stuffed cow in the middle of the dining room! I knew the kids would LOVE that, but I was not prepared for how much the adults would love it. Once we were seated, Mr. Bilotta brought out a small black board with the meals we agreed on in advance written on the menu. He also allowed us to order the specials of the day, which were written on a big black board on one wall of the restaurant. This meal was everyone's favorite of the trip, by far. Every dish that came out was more incredible than the last. Each person ordered what they wanted, but when the food came out, it was so delicious they were compelled to pass their dishes to people sitting around them saying, "you HAVE to try this!!" We sat and laughed and ate for hours. Some people even ordered more entrées after they were done because the food was so good! Visited June 2013
