Have a craving for sushi ( and other Japanese delights?) THIS IS THE PLACE I've been going to Akai for well over 20 years, but after a recent visit, I realized I had never left a review. Must have been that I (selfishly) didn't want to share! But now days there a ton of sushi places all over eastern Bergen County and I'm sure its putting a dent in business so we need to support a place like this The quality and professionalism put into their food (and drinks) are Top Notch. Located in the heart of the Englewood business district near the Bergen PAC theater, there is street & municipal parking close. Start off with a few amazing cocktails ( shout out to John who is a very friendly pro. Start off with a Patron Special margarita ( with Grand Marnier) or a Lychee martini. For the chocolate lover a Chocolate Dream made with vodka, chocolate liqueur, Kahlua, & Baileys. Both amazing. Plenty of Japanese beers and whiskeys too. I have eaten here many, many times, In house & take out. I have tried plenty of other places that were very good, but AKAI never disappoints. The service & the food. THE FOOD. The rolls... so many to choose from. From $8 and up. Some of the special rolls we've tried : O.M.G.= Roll spicy tuna, spicy salmon, lobster salad and shrimp tempura wrapped in a "tiger soy wrap". Served with eel sauce, honey wasabi and spicy mayo.....a work of art! Goodfellas Roll = spicy yellowtail and crunchtopped with bluefin toro and thinly sliced lemon. Latin Roll =skirt steak and tempura plantain topped with avocado and eel sauce. BUT, we cannot live on sushi alone. AKAI has a full menu of apps & entrees that will be the Yang to the sushi Ying Beef Negimaki ( appetizer or entree) = scallions wrapped in thinly sliced rib eye, pan seared and served with teriyaki sauce...I've had this dish at many places but this is the one that melts in your mouth & bursts with flavor! Miso Eggplant=lightly fried eggplant with sweet miso glaze on top --If you love your veggies, you'll love this. salty & sweet. could actually be a dessert Ahh dessert. If you do have room. I recommend a nice after dinner drink and split a fried ice cream with a dining partner ( they will split it for you). What makes their version so good is the batter\coating is almost tempura style. Super light & not greasy at all. Come hungry & leave with a satisfied sense of warmth as you walk back out into the streets of reality. ( poetic huh? :) Note: they have location now in Westfield NJ

Fantastic quality, selection and creativity. Friendly staff, management and owners. I've been here a few times and always leave full and happy, wondering why I wasn't back sooner. Run, don't walk, as they say. I'll be back soon for sure. BTW, silly names for food is nice whimsical touch.

Fireball. Couldn't take the pick tie before my husband attacked the dish it was delicious

Pleasantly surprised. I love exploring new places especially since my favorite Japanese restaurant is not offering outdoor dining. I have to say Akai offers a really nice selection of different, unique and savory rolls. I started with a Lychee Martini. It was very tasty and refreshing. We started with the Tuna Pizza, that was very flavorful. We all enjoyed the combination of flavors. We also had the fireball, oh my god was this delicious! For rolls we had the Latin Roll, NY Knicks roll, the OMG roll and the a fiesta roll. The OMG and the NY knicks were our favorite. There was a lot of "wow this is amazing" chatter. So happy to have discovered this place and that they offer outdoor dining in a shared parking lot. They have a tent in case it rains and friendly staff.

    So many rolls...amazing sushi here!

Easily one of my favorite sushi spots and one of the best sushi spots I have ever been to. It's better than most NYC restaurants, in my humble opinion. I love the ambiance too, the red and black color scheme is very fitting, and it's upscale without being pretentious at all. Moving on to the most important part, the food...their list of specialty rolls is through the chart and their appetizers are phenomenal. We go here so often they immediately bring us their fabulous crab salad and have a Lychee martini waiting. Some of my favorite appetizers include: chicken yakitori, miso eggplant, tuna guacamole, and tuna pizza. We've been known to literally lick the plate before we give it up to the waiter. For rolls, I highly suggest you give some specialty rolls a try. We absolutely love the Pain in the ass roll and the super California roll. They're staples. I've also had and highly recommend: Fiesta roll, Jersey roll, New York roll, Yankee roll. In addition to their incredible menu, they always have some unique specials every evening. I must also mention the fact that they have a fantastic wine and martini menu too and the people working here are all super friendly and have worked here for years so they know the menu very well. We always finish our meal off with their green tea ice cream in a tempura like casing. It's delicious.

In addition to the variety of rolls, ask for any special dishes available!

Solid Japanese restaurant in the area for rolls & other dishes. Came here for my birthday and the quality of food & service were great. Things get pricey quickly, which is the only downside. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered! Sushi/seafood tasted fresh and had great complementing flavors. We ordered the oysters and they didn't disappoint. And the soup dumplings were surprisingly good (but I wouldn't say *great*) as well. These may have been specials. But all in all, the food was beautifully plated & presented. It's got a hole-in-the-wall feel to it, while still having that authentic interior. So if you're looking for that modern & clean look without losing on the quality of food, definitely check this place out.

The only issue was that it's a little awkward being the only table in the restaurant and sitting at the sushi bar... Cause we had like eight people attending us and looking at us and listening to our every word. But you can look at it in another way and assume it felt like more of a private dining experience, which is cool. Because it was our first time there, we didn't wanna opt for the Omakase because my husband and I have had mediocre Omakase experiences and they don't come cheap. And something we didn't realize that this place does, that many other Omakase places don't do, is make their sauces in house to pair with the fish. A lot of omakase spots locally don't care to make a budget for sauces when they can get it ready made. A huge unique selling point of this place was at each sauce was separately made and stored in different containers to pair with the fish it was intended for... And when the chef had mentioned that a lot of Omakase places don't do this, It made a lot of sense. We ordered the Hamachi Jalapeño, tuna Crispy rice, tuna 5 ways, single nigiri pieces of sea bream and mackerel on my side and my husband ordered more basic pieces which I can't recall. We also Ordered the Hokkaido scallop cucumber roll. As soon as we tried the apps, we regretted not doing the omakase just because we knew it was gonna be that good. For Context, I haven't found any place in New Jersey that felt like a go to sushi spot that had high-quality fish, incredible pairings and seemingly consistent. The Hamachi jalapeño were bigger cuts of tuna with like this jalapeño paste sauce. It was amazing and proper spicy. No addtl sauce needed. The crispy rice tuna was insane. The hot rice paired with the cold tuna and their fixings were amazing. It didn't look like much, but it packed a huge punch of flavor. I think it might be the wasabi they use But both the wasabi and soy sauce were insanely good The tuna way of our little attempt at omakase ish. They gave you four pieces of Nigiri ( 2 being fatty tuna pieces) And a chopped tuna hand roll. I'm a texture person so I wasn't a fan of the hand, but each piece of tuna was better than the next. The fatty ones were insanely melty and lovely And I just really goes to show that I don't think I've had good high quality, fresh sushi or fish from many places Because no place matched up to this. I had ordered a piece of sea bream which was insanely good. I've never tried anything like that before and if I could, I would order 20 of those alone. The mackerel was really good and not fishy at all as well. The Hokkaido scallop Cucumber roll was very simple, but packed a huge bunch of flavor when you dipped it in the spicy sauce that it was paired with alongside a soy sauce wasabi combo. You could taste the quality and freshness. I was drinking a glass of sparkling wine... The wine was fine before I had the sushi... But drinking a sip while eating my sushi totally changed my palette as the sparkling wine paired so well that it became sweet. Last, but not least the miso cheesecake - Absolutely incredible and made in house. We ordered two more to go And they thought we were joking. That's how good it was. I don't miss New York City when I have sushi from places like this.

I enjoyed the best spider roll of my life. The soft shell crab was encased in the most perfect rice. My boyfriend was wowed with his selections and the green tea was fresh, hot and satisfying. Definitely highly recommend though you may need to plan in advance and make a reservation.

I ordered takeout via ubereats and it was very average. In fact, my sushi had a bone in it. I understand it happens, but then when I called, the manager/owner seemed like he couldn't care less and didn't offer a discount for a future visit. It was an awkward call due to his apathetic response and I even asked, "Is there anything you can do?" to prompt a response and he bluntly replied no. The dumplings also seemed like they were frozen from the grocery store. The sauce was soo greasy and had a weird taste.

When we walked in, the gentleman inside was mopping. We asked if they were still open, and he said yes, so we went ahead and placed our order at the counter -- the $77 chef's choice sushi + sashimi + roll set. About 10 minutes later, the food was ready. We paid (the total came to around $87 after tax), and the gentlemen kindly gifted us a truffle soy sauce bottle. Nothing was mentioned about the order being "chef's choice" beyond what was written. When we opened the platter, we were honestly disappointed. For a chef's choice set at this price, we expected a wider variety. Instead, it was mostly very basic cuts: salmon, tuna and yellowtail for both the sushi and sashimi, one kani roll with seared salmon on top, and one tempura shrimp roll. Everything tasted fine, but nothing about it felt special or worth the price. It looked more like a simple salmon/tuna combo than a true chef's assortment. If it was already too late in the evening for the full selection, I really wish that had been communicated. Instead, we walked away feeling like we didn't get the value or experience we were hoping for. I wanted to love this place, but unfortunately, this visit fell short.

My dining partner and I were seated rather quickly. Our server took our drink orders and came back promptly so we could order our food. The menu is pretty extensive but we ordered an assortment of skewers and a bowl of ramen to share. The skewers came out little by little; about 3 skewers per plate. They didn't come all at once so I assume they bring them out as they finish getting grilled. The chicken heart was some of the best I've ever had. I'm not sure if it's the way it was sliced, the seasoning, or just everything about it but I wish we ordered more. The tail skewer was another standout. It had so much crunch that it was almost like it was fried. The flavors were rich and varied. Each skewer cost upwards of $4 so that's a bummer. Unfortunately the ramen wasn't so great. Not terrible, but not great either. Especially not great for $19. Not my first choice for ramen. Is it the most bang for your buck? Certainly not. But I did enjoy my meal and in the end, that's what matters.

The dining area is in rough shape -- cracked wood, dusty interior, and a generally run-down vibe that makes it feel borderline dirty rather than "casual." Service was also frustrating. Our servers couldn't answer basic questions about the menu, which is already hard to follow if you're not familiar with Japanese terms. It left us feeling lost rather than guided. On top of that, the pricing is steep for the suburbs -- $5-$8 per skewer adds up really quickly, and it just didn't feel worth it given the atmosphere and service. All the yakitori was decent but nothing mind blowing, smaller servings and overly salty. To make matters worse, the tap water was awful -- honestly undrinkable. Look at my picture I'm shocked they thought this was acceptable to bring to our table. The food itself may be authentic, but everything else about the experience dragged it down. Unfortunately, not somewhere I'd come back to.
