It was crisp, fresh and the dressing had a nice sweetness to it. I enjoyed the brown rice, mixing it in with the teriyaki sauce. The shrimp tasted really nice in the sauce and the texture was good. The scallops were a little chewy and had a little too much of a fishy taste for me. The cali roll was good. The peanut avocado roll was not the best. It tasted bland. Maybe they need to use roasted or salted peanuts. It might have been the fact that it was whole and halved peanuts instead of chopping them fine to mix in with the avocado. read more

We ate lunch here on Saturday & we're very pleased with the food & portion sizes. We started with their delicious pork Gyoza appetizer (recommend) & by the time we finished lunch we were absolutely stuffed! The staff friendly & attentive. We really liked that they are taking the extra Covid safety steps, with masked employees, touch less menus & social distancing & like I mentioned "masked employees"!! Last night was finally our opportunity to come back for sushi since we were going to be in the area. We were super excited because we remembered how much we enjoyed the food. My only disappointment was that I did not ask for those spicy edamame... We ordered edamame off the appetizers, which were the standard lightly salted ones. Whichever ones we got about a year ago that is in my older picture was unique and delicious.... I guess now it may have been a yelp check in special... Regardless, the food still was amazing. I ordered the tri color salad, which is raw tunas and salmon over greens/asparagus $10 and a "specialty roll" Crown salmon $15. My husband had the sushi platter for one $22 and we shared a peanut avocado roll $4. Everything was super fresh and flavorful. I checked into yelp which offered a free saki bomb. The waiters came over and explained how it works and what to chant before banging on the table and chugging it. It was a first time experience for both of us, we couldn't stop laughing. They brought out two which was really nice, one for each of us, as a no charge. With so many restaurants on this strip, this one is definitely a must if you love sushi. read more

The sushi was UNBELIEVABLY fresh and delicious, the drinks were yummy and large, and the atmosphere of the place... while clubbier than Kotobuki, gives its a fun, night-out vibe. It's not too loud or dark, or dude-bro in here. It's perfect for a fun dinner out with anyone. I highly recommend going with people and getting the sushi sampler plates. Fiance and I had the sushi and sashimi for two this evening and it was unfuckwithable. Aji 53, the only part about yourself you take seriously is the food. Why am I giving it two stars? Let's start with the positive feedback first. 2 stars because 1 ..the food was amazing, 2.. because the bartender was friendly. Now let's talk about why I left unhappy. Please don't come eat here for your safety. They need to step up their safety measures. Yes they're all wearing mask.. but they are not wearing GLOVES. Sitting at the bar I can see everything what's going, and I work in the restaurant industry. The kindly bartender picked up dirty glasses her guest finished, and then continued to make drinks without us seeing her washing her hands or wearing gloves. she used lemons with dirty hands and put it in my drink. Same thing goes for the other servers. Bathroom was not in the best shape either. A worker should go in and clean and disinfect every 30 mins. Service was good and the wait staff is pretty friendly. The place has a rather clubby vibe to it and is quite spacious so it would be ideal for a large group. There was no wait for the table on a Friday night. The only special roll I got was the Angel roll and it was super delicious. The simple rolls -- eel avocado and spicy yellowtail were mediocre. The eel was good and so was the spicy yellowtail itself, but the rice was kind of chewy and dry. The rolls were also rather "unfilled". The presentation was also messy...which something I don't usually notice at even more average spots. Very surprised at such a high quality of their special roll and such a subpar quality of their simple rolls....kind of goes to show that they maybe only care about the rolls that make them most money? The first thing I noticed when we walked in was it most certainly was jam packed and there was loud music pumping. I like trendy but I also like to have a conversation at dinner so we asked to be seated towards the back of the restaurant. They gave us a table in the back corner - mix of a crowd. Mid life crisis double date near us taking sake bombs and then a quite conservative old couple onlooking with horror but seemed to be enjoying their tour of the menu. They kept ordering appetizers like this was a Japanese tapas bar. The bottom line is despite the odd and loud atmosphere they put out great food. The fish is very fresh and their list of special rolls is unique. I would say their food and service certainly rival my favorite place in town but because of the loud music and also that they don't offer the versatility of options for other Asian cuisine like Thai / Chinese I have to give them one less star then my favorite. read more

My birthday, college graduation and most recently valentines day lunch with my boyfriend just to name a few stand out events. I'll choose to write about the later for this review. We came in for lunch on Valentine's Day which happened to be a Saturday. They had a lunch special going on that was a pretty good deal. I got 2 rolls and a salad for $11. My boyfriend got 3 rolls and a salad for $15. We also split the tuna pizza which was crazy good. As a frequent customer of Aji53 for the past 10 years I am very disappointed in the customer service and the unprofessional response I received from their manager this past week. I had an order delivered from Aji( not from doordash). I ordered filet mignon stir fry well done. When I bit into the first piece it wasn't even medium it was gooey, mushy, and completely raw inside. As someone who eats steak well doneI was completely disgusted by this and the taste/texture I had in my mouth. I called Aji and told them and they said to me yes, I see that you asked for it well done. They then told me they wanted to come to my house and pick it up because their policy is that they have to show their chef. I told the manager that's fine if you want to dig thru my kitchen garbage because I threw it out. He then told me I was being aggressive on the phone. It ended by myself hanging the phone up because I was getting nowhere and he was just being condescending and arguing with me. What bothers me the most is that he even said to me I see from your order history that you order this often. I feel like since he saw that and I never complained before he should have either gave me credit or delivered me a new one but he wouldn't without picking the old one out of the garbage. The cocktails are often well made and are tasty, creative concoctions. Additionally, despite being so well known and popular they have NOT raised their prices like many other establishments. Again, the jury is still out on the class of Aji. It's loud, clubby and sometimes attracts a horde of less than stellar people...such as questionable types like the obviously pregnant woman drinking hard liquor with her friend and eating sushi squealing "I know this is bad but I don't care!" to our bartender. Hmm, maybe after your precious offspring has a myriad of developmental issues, or worse, fetal alcohol syndrome you will care a little. Just maybe. Protip: One member of the waitstaff made a most excellent suggestion to me regarding sake. If you favor smooth, easy to drink rice wines, try the black and gold. By far one the best Sushi restaurants on Long Island. This is a mid size restaurant with a small bar in the middle. All sorts of dishes are offered but their Sushi is what they are known for. I recommend you start your meal with a Kani Salad, delicate blend of cucumber, carrots & mango in a spicy (mild) dressing. It is unique and you will not be dissapointed! They have a great selection of appetizers like shrimp & Calamari which are all worth it. As far as Sushi, you really cannot go wrong with any choice. Tried Aji for the first time after a day at Fire Island and i've never been more satisfied. The bartender was a short brunette with a heart of gold, the wait was short and accurate on time and by the time we got to the bar the food came out timely and delicious. The american dream was the best roll I ever had and the mojito was made with real sugar! My husband and I will definitely be going back this winter! The food is very good, but it's better down the road a bit. After hearing a ton of ranting and raving from friends we decided to cheat on Mitsui and head over to Aji 53 in Bayshore. The food was on the pricey side but was good. The service was good and the portions seemed normal, but one thing kind of threw us all off a bit. We sat down and ordered and then realized the music started to get fairly loud, and there were blinking lights here and there. Almost like a down played club atmosphere. At one point we were kind of shouting to even hear one another at the table. Cocktails were very good and generous. My wife had another disappointing glass of Japanese restaurant white wine. Ordering white wine in a Japanese restaurant (except perhaps, at Nobu) is like pinning a sign that says "disappoint me" onto your shirt. The sushi was good and so were the salads. There was the obligatory black cod in miso sauce on the menu, but I had eaten at Nobu recently and didn't want to be disappointed. Solid restaurant, especially given the locale. The place was completely packed on a Monday night. Special appetizer was a salmon tasting. Which happens to be one of the few types of fish that I do not enjoy raw. Well, that all changed last night. 2 of the 3 types in the tasting were amazing.. not sure what they were but the presentation and flavors were top notch. Also tried a special roll they had with a mix of lobster, crab and shrimp - topped with seared tuna and drizzled with some delicious sauce (perhaps a spiced up yuzu, not sure). There are two location of this restaurant. I have always went to the Smithtown location and hands down.. it has been AMAZING every time I go. The foods, service, atmosphere has always been great..
