We popped in here for lunch. What a great decision. It's mostly a takeout place, but the had one small table and a bar with 3 stools. We were visiting, so takeout wasn't an option. We ordered a few things to try. The first being the bulgogi bao buns. Yum!! We also got their Korean fried chicken and a tuna tatami roll. Everything was excellent! I would definitely go back. I love this place! First the value, that's a word you don't hear much these days but you definitely get a lot of food for the money, you will not be hungry especially if you get the bowls. Second it's really delicious. They do use imitation crab meat but overall it's really good. Lastly even though it's not an eat in kind of place the appearance is clean and the staff is friendly. I probably would rate this place 3.5 out of 5 if possible. First off the server was extremely nice and I have no problem with the service, the place is clean and the interior while small, is very cute. I know the reviews are raving but I found the food very average. My boyfriend got the bulgogi yutari bowl and said it was pretty good. I got the Osaka namba roll and thought it was pretty good just kind of small for a $16 special roll. Lastly we got the $10 pork buns which is already pretty steep for pork buns and they were subpar. Just very eh. They were also the smallest buns I have EVER had. And I've had many! Overall it's a cute place with nice workers but very average slightly overpriced food read more

I've been wanting to have some food from here since I saw the menu that someone left at work. Today was the day. I didn't know there wasn't any indoor seating at this time, so I ended up just bringing food back with me to work. After a look over the menu I ordered a "YUTARI BOWL" which to me was essentially a poke bowl. You were able to pick your base of greens or rice and protein. Included toppings were seaweed salad, crab, lettuce, edamame and crunch. I was able to chose between lemon soy or siracha aioli. There was a ton of choices for proteins; tuna and salmon, eel, tuna, salmon, beef, chicken, spicy pork, pork, veggies. I went with tuna & salmon, brown rice and siracha aioli as my choices. It was a very filling and flavorful lunch! It wasn't a long wait for take out either. I did have some time to look over the menu, and I will be ordering from here again. Although my order was take out, service was friendly. The bowl was a little on the pricy side in my opinion at $16...but the quality was amazing. read more

Nothing really wowed me as far as choices went either. It was a large platter but the rolls are pretty small with not much to them. Masa in Babylon is to me the superior sushi place in my area. I ordered takeout from here twice recently and it was delicious! Their soba noodles might be the best I've ever had...however the tofu. Where is the tofu? It just tasted like strips of deep fried nothing. It was all breading. Lightly fried tofu cubes would be much better!! But the noodles made up for it. I just ate around it. My daughter loved her noodles with the chicken. The cucumber avocado roll and shrimp tempura were delicious. I love their mango aioli sauce. The shrimp fried rice was also really good. Vegan food: spicy tofu vege soup!!! So spicy and so delicious. Once or twice they put a hard boiled egg in it so I always just say no egg just in case cuz I definitely don't want to eat a hard boiled egg. The food was amazing and fresh and made pretty quick. Service was great and the staff was so friendly. The bombs were the main reason i wanted to try this place and it did not disappoint. They were so full of flavor. The tuna buns where good and a lot bigger than we expected. The pork fried rice tasted great and so full of flavor. Gave us the hibachi taste. I was previously at koiKKR after a weekend outing in LI. We weren't looking for sushi, but had a hankering for Japanese bites and hot foods, and was told they have an extensive menu. We did end up ordering one of the specialty rolls towards the end of the meal, and it was delish. It was topped with tuna and salmon, and had a pretty name but forgotten. Their buns are very popular, seen at other tables in many variations. We tried the Pork Belly and Crispy Chicken buns, tasty morsels reminiscent of ones you'd find at popular Japanese restaurants in Manhattan. Also had the Chicken Kaarage with Sirachi aioli over rice, which was a homey tasting Japanese-style rice bowl. The kaarage was similar to the ones in their buns, crispy and tender. Yakisoba Noodles with beef was also a nice dish, stir-fried with a slight char and good flavors. Will come back if I'm along this way, and actually check out their sushi/sashimi, but don't miss the rest of their menu! read more

Second time ordering takeout from here and it doesn't disappoint! Got the party bon bomb and it was delicious, fresh and filling. It comes with 16 pieces total for $18 - 4 pieces of karai tuna sushi, 4 pieces of tuna sushi, 4 pieces of salmon and then the last 4 you either choose yellowtail or lobster. The first time I ordered I got the lobster. This time around I got the yellowtail. I also ordered the green tea cheesecake for dessert which was really good and light. It came with red bean to put on top which was a bit too sweet for me. This will be my go to takeout sushi spot. The torched salmon tasted old, stale, and defrosted . The spicy lobster also was brown and tasted like bread crumbs and consistency was definitely not lobster or anything close . This place came up on Yelp and had many positive reviews from elites whose personal opinions I trust so off I went with Jay O. Located in Islip's village parking at 7pm was difficult to find. Once we entered Koi yikes so many people waiting! We were told it's about a 25 min. Jay O wanted to get a drink at The Blue Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar across the street. They take your number and call you when your table is ready. We got the call in about 25mins as they stated and headed over. Food- Kani salad pretty good, soft shell crab roll tasty,pork buns were delicious you get two small ones for $9 (too much bbq sauce for me), blue point oysters (Jay O) he said they were fresh and great, Ramen soup spicy with short rib which isn't on the menu but we asked for this meat instead an up charge of $4 it was really good, tempura chicken (variety of sauces- sriracha aioli (my personal fav), hoisin sauce, soy sauce and another I wasn't able to identify I ordered it with white rice $1 more this dish was satisfying and pretty cheap at $6 with the rice charge, for dessert jasmine rice pudding $3 small but tasty I really liked that it wasn't too sweet and also a large saki which my fiancé enjoyed. Service- As busy as they were in there our waitress was amazing really so sweet!!!! Spoons,bowls,refills were given to us promptly. Food came out in a timely manner. Probably my favorite Asian restaurant on Long Island, Islip's funky Koi Kokoro gets creative with a massive arrary of sushi and other Japanese fare, alongside a selection of awesome Korean-style bun sliders. To start, the Sushi Bon Bombs are perfect if you have a group. Also good in the app department are the Spicy Midori (a layered tuna and avocado concoction), wasabi pork shumai and (if it's on the menu) the crispy egg. For the buns, you can't go wrong with any choice, but I particularly loved the bulgogi beef teriyaki and jalapeno, and the crunchy cod and kimchi salsa. Wash it all down with some green tear or a lovely bottle of cloudy nigori sake. read more

Wow. What a breath of fresh air. Islip has been hiding a diamond in the rough. When a fellow Yelp Elite states in a review that a spot has the best sushi on Suffolk county, you stop, reroute your GPS, and go there. And wow, am I glad I listened to the reviews below. However, no words can truly capture just how special Koi Kokoro is. My husband travels a lot for work, often to Japan as his business partner is Japanese. Living out on Long Island, unfortunately we are **super saturated** with crappy, fast-food quality run-of-the-mill sushi that caters to the American palette. And although that has its place too, it becomes easy to forget all that sushi can be in its true art form. 90% of sushi businesses on Long Island are not Japanese owned, and there is something massive to be said about the fact that Koi Kokoro is 1/3 alongside (Takumi Commack, Stirling Sake Greenport) The freshness of the fish is obvious, and so rare to find restaurants that go the extra mile to acquire pricier quality ingredients. The rich authenticity of flavors, the unique sauces, the extensive quality sake selection, even the way the vegetables are cut in a highly precise fashion- it's an experience totally separate from the sushi you're used to. You will notice upon entering that the walls are lined with saké bottles and that some genuine Japanese knives that have been sharpened and loved over many years of use perched on a wall behind the chef. Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore. And all of this authenticity, freshness & creativity at an highly accessible price point. Wow. We got the Tuna Pizza, ***utilized their absolutely genius sushi flight option, which allows you to order 1/2 and 1/2 of two specialty rolls instead of one large one*** and the Salmon Yutari bowl. The tuna pizza at $6 is a gorgeous petite appetizer full of flavor- those sauces pack a punch and the chip the tuna is served on is light fresh and crispy without being oily. It's the perfect size and wonderful for a starter. Both the Nami Club and Miru Mountain 1/2 and 1/2 sushi flight were fresh, hearty, and artfully constructed. There is a perfect balance of sauces, but not too much so as to allow the fish to sign through. Again, the uniqueness and freshness of the ingredients is abundant and just so so special. You cannot get these rolls anywhere else. The yutari bowl was gorgeous and hearty, I felt 37% healthier after eating it. I think I can end my dissertation just by saying this is such a rare singular experience. THANK you staff and owner for existing and doing it right. When clicking four stars on Yelp, they prompt you to write some glowing review with the words "Yay! I'm a fan." Well, although it gets tough to write review after review and somehow be original, I've gotta say... YAY! I'm a fan! The menu here at Koi Kokora is large and certainly in charge. It's matched by their ambiance and I cannot wait to go back... no seriously, I'm on my way back! that ramen is calling my name as are so many of the apps & things; ahhhhhhh pipe down my lovies, I'll be there to put you in my mouth soon! First things first (some sayings are so ambiguously unambiguous) start with the garlic soy wings; while I found it could actually use a better garlic soy flavor, they were also the crispiest wings ever and so incredible for that alone. The chicken was tender and tasty, but when it comes to wings, you know it's all about that crisp life. Not able to decide on apps is just one of the struggles, (or perks seeing as how You get to order more; two more in my case) I stared at the menu trying to decide what on earth to get as everything sounded so great. We also ordered the lobster BonBomb (good but I wasn't going off the walls, I'd like an actual big chunk of lobster tail on this; they could charge accordingly and really make it something special) With that said, I also ordered the Crunchy chicken bun (my friend doesn't like meat per-say so the pork-belly was a no-go but convinced her to have the chicken; this was actually pretty darn good, the crunch added something real nice to the whole bun thang, but it really stuck to our teeth and needed some sort of sauce to put it over the top, even a spicy mayo would work. (still awesome, I just nitpick and think of my own kitchen; my condiment obsession is strong) After all this was ordered up with some hot saki, we decided to split the AOI roll - the thing was delicious, but I think I missed out on the show at center ring; everyone was getting bomb af looking ramen around me and I couldn't help but jump into a fantasy world of being some sort of ramen ninja where I'd throw my chopstick through the air, carrying all their dishes to my own table, all of the happy patrons none-the-wiser. I tried their sushi, which was pretty good! Well made, it hit the spot! Whenever I go into pick up, they always greet me in such a polite manner. I was a bit disappointed in their Yutari Bowl. I felt like it was similar to a poke bowl but you can't really customize it and its pricey. I do love the interior whenever I go pick up, I wish they open indoor dining option again. read more
