My husband and I ate here on a Saturday night with another couple. The decor is pretty cool and it has kind of an Atlantic City nightlife vibe. The food took foreverrrrr to come out, but everything was really good. Started with steamed veggie dumplings, then I had the monster roll and spicy tuna roll. My guy had the hibachi steak, which was delicious and tender. I kept snagging bites with my chopsticks. Was worried at first bc the rating was only 3 1/2 stars. My experience is based on a Sunday evening. The staff was very friendly, had no reservations and was seated right away. It was pretty busy not packed. The specialty drinks were really good, and the waiter Jacob was super informative about Sake. He suggested something and we ended up ordering 2 bottles. Superb, accommodating friendly service, I was able to substitute one sushi for another type sushi fish in a roll w/no extra charge.They came out with dessert and sang Happy Birthday and added a lot of extras for no additional charge. Probably one of the best sushi places in Suffolk County. We made reservations for 7:00 and when we arrived 15 minutes earlier, we were seated promptly even though the restaurant was clearly busy. The waitress was very professional and hospitable. Of all the rolls we had, the American Dream roll was by far the best. The prices are relatively high for the area but the quality is definitely up to par with the cost. Highly recommended. 5 Stars! read more

Awesome food, one of my favorites! The service is pretty good too. I love their style of fusing different flavors together that most people wouldn't try. BUT horrible with reservations! We had 8pm reservations on Saturday and didn't get seated until 9:10pm! This happens all the time-- probably 4-5 times now, and there is no place to wait! Went here for dinner with friends tonight. While we all enjoyed the food we ordered (Miso Seabass, Twister Roll, and Grilled shrimp), the service however was subpar. Waitors were just a bit kurt. I will probably not go here again for a sit down dinner, but would consider take-out. read more

Aji 53 has excellent sushi and cocktails...the atmosphere is also very trendy. They have a great selection of sake and a pretty decent selection for wine. Must trys on the menu are...rock shrimp tempura, blue crab fajitas, the Sunshie roll and the paradise roll. read more

Seriously disappointing, have always wanted to try Aji, and I'm terribly sorry I did, glad I only had one roll, it was covered in mayonnaise, and a hair. Service was beyond unacceptable. When the person I was having a meal with asked for something to drink that didn't have sugar he said WATER. They never came back to refill the water glasses and after dinner we ordered green tea the waiter brings a pot to the table and then pours the cup, takes the cup and the pot away from the table and says he will be right back, 8 mins later he comes back and sets the cup on the table. He comes back with the check and says this ones yours and puts it on the table and proceeds to look confused. The sushi was mediocre in quality to say the least, and to reiterate the service was not enjoyable, I'm sorry I had this experience and 3 hours later, I am revisiting it, I wish I didn't have to give it any stars, WILL NEVER BE BACK, Supermarket sushi is far better than what this place calls sushi read more

As an avid sushi fan, I've been going to Aji53 for years and have always had a great experience, probably having spent close to $3000 over the years. I've never felt the need to write a Yelp review until now but I know the owner reads these reviews and I've noticed a number of less-than-stellar reviews as of late. I'm dismayed and shocked that I'm writing this. I haven't been in about 8 months and after today I don't think I will be returning. - Poorly prepared & proportioned Yellowtail Jalepeno appetizer - Shrimp sushi was overcooked to the point of rubber - Same goes for the shrimp in the American Dream roll, it was almost inedible - Discovered a very sharp bone in a piece of red snapper sashimi - Sour tasting piece of yellowtail sushi (spit it out) - Overwhelmingly fishy smell & taste of typical red tuna sushi (spit it out) - Pieces of clearly rotten & soggy lettuce in entree salad (did not eat) - Waitress forgot two orders from the list of appetizers that were ordered and had to be reminded well into the meal. When the edemame arrived at the table it was limp, cold and unseasoned. Now, about 6 hours after the visit to the restaurant, I am quite ill; visiting the bathroom nearly every 20-30 minutes, incredibly nauseous, and experiencing abdominal cramps. I don't know what the issue was this evening, maybe I'm just the recipient of some really horrible luck today. It's a shame. read more

I'm not sure what happened to this place. I've been here many times in the last 10 years or so and it was always really good. I had dinner there last night and I'm not sure what was worse the food or the service. First off we ordered two appetizers and three items for the main course. They brought out our appetizers then brought our main course 5 minutes later when we weren't even halfway through our apps. So now the two of us have five plates in front of us. I guess it would haven't been such a huge deal except the food was so bad that I concluded they are just rushing out out the door. and could care less how our food came out. The seafood fried rice had no flavor, the American Dream roll (my former favorite) was not good at all, and the chicken teriyaki was rubbery. I've never called to complain about a restaurant in my life. But In this case, I had to call because of how truly dissatisfied I was. I would have been better off having Dominos. The manager offered me 20% off the next time at which I responded that I'll just go to Kotobuki and actually know that I'll enjoy my food. read more

Amazing place with even better food. My husband and I went to Aji 53 for some sushi not even knowing what to expect. The restaurant itself is lovely, clean and very eye-friendly. We ordered an array of food off the lunch menu and everything had a fresh, clean taste that left us wanting more and more. The staff was very punctual and always on top of everything. The bathrooms were amazingly clean, which is often a thing that I find easy to complain about in restaurants. I have not been there late night, but know if I am itching for some PM sushi, I will definitely travel here again. read more

I was so excited to try Aji 53 since I heard so many great reviews about it. I love trying new places for sushi but I must say my boyfriend and I along with another couple left there very disappointed. We each ordered some specialty rolls along with a couple of appetizers and found nothing exciting about them. We are huge fans of Kotobuki. When comparing the two, we definitely like the ambiance better at Aji 53 and the fact that they serve lychee martinis (my favorite). Coming from a nyc sushi restaurant background,I must say that the food was very good. Possibly in the second tier. The interior design and layout is nice, similar to a funky nyc sushi spot. Our waiter was nice overall, he did seem a little annoyed but i'll attribute that to it being late at night. My only complaint is the music- it ruined the while atmosphere. If you like guido fist pumping or gay scene club/techno music then you'll be fine. If not, be prepared to either have a manic episode ignited or a full blown anxiety. read more

Since we went to Aji 53 we have never had sushi from any other place. My girlfriends that live in Queens even come to have dinner with me here. It's an awesome spot in Bay Shore. You have to make a reservation on Friday and Saturday nights or you will wait forever. If you don't make a reservation it's still worth the wait. I always get the American Dream roll. It's fresh every time. My husband is not big into sushi so he gets steak and he is always raving about it. Their ginger dressing is out of this world. It's hard for me to rank this place any lower than a three simply because I love the food. Pricey, but still good. Now, with that said, if you go there during the week you can expect an enjoyable, tolerable, sane restaurant experience complete with being able to hear your own voice and being able to eat and talk at your own pace. However, going to Aji-53 after 7pm on a Friday or Saturday night is like entering the 7th circle of hell, a festering cauldron of sweaty, sloshed, south Suffolk Ginzos who feel comfortable and willing to pay top dollar for bottom service. I swear, every time it gets worse and worse. The waiter stalks in the corner, awaiting the first sign of a semi cleared white plate to swoop in and grab your dish that way the next order can get body slammed in your lap 4 seconds later with zero to no regard for etiquette or a normally functioning digestive tract. The rushed meal is coupled with insanely loud tunes for a sushi bar. It's literally a manhattan feel and price trapped in a galactic all vortex that somehow wound up in bay shore. Take my advice, if you're hungry on the weekend save yourself the trouble and just starve. You'll thank me later. read more

First off let me say I've been to Kumo Sushi down the block and Kumo is better. this place is somewhat hard to find. Especially in the dark there's no glowing sign that says Aji. The decor was pretty simple, nothing that stands out. The menu I was extremely disappointed with. It was very plain, yes it was a hard book but I like to see some pictures of the food I'm ordering. Poorly described food. The portions are miniature I was shocked. I ordered seaweed salad and when I received it, I had a little scoop of salad in a ginormous bowl. We also ordered shrimp dumplings, which tasted kind of fishy.. Kind of a distinct taste, and not to mention super tiny they were like little tiny baby bites. The display of the food was pretty basic and plain nothing beautiful. At the end, we felt very rushed, she handed the check even before asking if there was anything else. And maybe it is coincidental, but the very next morning I woke up with a bad stomach ache, made me want to vomit. I was very disappointed. For the price they are charging there should be more oomf . I am definitely going to stay with Kumo down the block. read more

Service is absolutely awful 1 appetizer every 15 minutes at a table for 8 where 5 of us ordered Manager came to table and obviously there was a mistake because our server got chewed out in front of us. the last app still came 10 minutes later. My sister, who recommended thebplace was disappointed when she asked former soy sauce the same server asked, " are you sure?" and attempted to pour from an empty bottle- a 4 ounce bottle for 7 adults. The tako sushi fell apart while I was pickings it up with my fingers even thought was tied with nori the mango madness was mushy I can't speak for everyone else but my fiance was disappointed that there weren't sauces offered with her hibachi chicken as we were waiting forbear check the front of the house manager offerednus desserts on the house but no discount on anybody the apps that were delayed. 250 dollars I'll never spend there again. read more

I have been to Aji several times and enjoyed it, however, I believe the quality is slipping. We went for a birthday celebration with a group of 12. The temperature of the restaurant was way too cold for a comfortable meal. Most of our part wore our winter coats and even gloves. Service was horrible. All of the food was room temp or colder including the meals that were meant to be hot. Service took a very long time and was inaccurate. One member if our group was served shellfish despite stating an allergy and confirming multiple times with the waiter. There were multiple mistakes in our orders and no attempt to rectify this. I don't plan to return anytime soon. read more
