This was our first meal in Rome and it was the kind of encounter that really reaffirms your faith in people. That sounds a bit dramatic... but actually it's really not.
Let me explain. My boyfriend and I had flown from Seattle to New York on a red eye, hung out at the airport (with very little sleep) and then took another red eye from New York to Rome. We only had a couple days in the city before sailing on a cruise, so we wanted to make the best of it. So, on virtually no sleep for two days, we checked in to our B&B, freshened up, and set out to explore as much as we could.
Agora was around the corner from our hotel, close to the Termini station. We were instantly drawn to the sort of industrial but homey feel of the place. We do not speak much Italian at all, and had no idea what the heck we were doing. But somehow we managed to get the hang of the cafeteria style and, just by pointing and nodding, ended up taking trays of food back to the tables.
I had some fish and vegetables, and he had some kind of chicken dish. We were in such a fog of tiredness and, well, new-ness --- that wide-eyed sensation of everything being different and unusual and exciting. But the servers were nice, and understanding, and totally non-judgemental like some people are when they encounter tourists. The food was good and inexpensive; I wouldn't really appreciate what good value it was until later after we'd gotten around some more.
I don't remember very many details, but I came away with an impression of being very welcomed. I'd say that alone is worth a visit to this restaurant. read more
