The best thing is the service- maybe because we go there so much, but everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Plus the prices won't break the bank. All in all, a very down to earth, classic neighborhood Mexican restaurant.

We were greeted and sat right away, they brought us the standard chips and salsa and even brought out a spicier salsa for me when I asked. Our food was done very quickly, almost too quickly, and that's probably why it wasn't 5 stars. It wasn't bad at all, the food was good, but something was missing- freshness, maybe? From order to table it was probably 7 minutes. I assume things are premade and that makes sense for things that take a while like the birria my daughter got but I was slightly disappointed with the flavor. The place is good, the environment was welcoming and we would definitely go back

It took forever to receive, with many coming after me with larger orders leaving before me. After a day of playing tourist, I wasn't in the mood, but didn't explode! They did apologize upon receipt of my order. Good thing! The burrito was excellent! Unlike most you buy in Virginia, this one didn't have a cheese sauce on top, so it had to live or die by what's inside! It excelled! Great spices, but not too much! Haven't had the rice, as the burrito filled me up, so no comment. Wanna try another place while I'm visiting, but would absolutely come back here for the final product received!

Also tried crab cakes which were fresh only down side some shell in it and the fries were good. Pricing is on the expensive side so keep that in mind when ordering. We stopped here for lunch between visiting the Currituck Lighthouse and Whalehead Club and our late-afternoon wild horse tour. The restaurant is tucked into the corner of a strip-mall-type complex and was a little difficult to find, but we were sure glad we did. The lunch special was a fried flounder basket with wonderfully seasoned, crispy French fries, coleslaw, and hush puppies. Everything tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly. It's a walk-up-and-order, seat-yourself kind of place. It appeared that the same person taking orders was also cooking and bringing the food to the tables. We ate outside on a very small deck overlooking a tiny bridge and waterway. The setting is simple, but the fresh, well-cooked food was definitely the highlight. This little hidden gem was well worth finding!

Feeling a little defeated we ended up popping into Nellys since it was close to our house. They were upfront that service was slow as they were short staffed and quite busy. Despite working/serving/cooking and all the other hats he wore he had a genuinely upbeat personality and was nice to us (tourists) my sandwich was amazing! There is also a bar serving alcohol on one side of the restaurant. I arrived at 1:30, so there was no line which got my food to me in a very quick amount of time! As you walk in you note the feel of it being a converted diner made to look like a country place. You grab your own menu, seat yourself, and walk up to the bar/register when ready to order. If the first time, you need a minute to get your bearings. Food ordered (3% fee is not using the cash "discount" FYI, pretty common around here and absurd given these OBX prices). Drinks are self serve. Some coke products and excellent tea. This was the end of breakfast around 10:30/11, so it was empty. Service was pretty quick. (they bring it to the table). I thought the breakfast pricing was fair. Shrimp and grits for $12, etc. Especially for the portion sizes. Two things I didn't care for. -The ceilling tiles were crazy dirty and stained and the flor light bulbs were uncovered. -The shrimp and grits needs a re-do. It's huge, with a base of grits, ladels of bacon gravy, and about 5 shrimp and cheddar cheese. It's more like a shrimp, grits, gravy, cheese casserole. I would have much rather had a base of grits, the gravy scooped in the middle with shrimp stuck in it, and topped with cheese. Even with all that you'd think there would be flavor. It was kind of bland minus the occasionally greasy/burnt bacon piece. Also, the shrimp were flavorful but over-cooked and tail on, which is traditional--but in the casserole were a pain in the butt to get the tail off/cut. I know they can do good flavors and plates. My spouse's chicken biscut...omg the hand-breaded chicken was fantastic! My son's baked apples were to die for. You Philly visitors will be happy to see scrapples on the menu - yuck. All in, I would repeat and stick to chicken and the chicken coop.
