Coconut ice cream

I was happy to learn of this ramen joint that opens a bit later, closing at 10pm in case I got hungry at 9pm. We ordered the popcorn chicken, black garlic oil tonkotsu ramen, and udon with shrimp tempura. All of them had good texture and appearance, but were missing that umami restaurant flavor that I'd travel out of my home for. Both soup broths were nice to sip on a cold day, however I couldn't really tell if my ramen had black garlic oil in it. The tempura was crispy but would've tasted a lot better with some tempura sauce, but they don't have that. The portions are generous. The interior as a whole looked rebranded from a prior eatery, and has potential to become a chill neighborhood hangout spot in the Outer Sunset. I think if they got new tables without scratches, comfortable cushioned seats and kept them clean, it'd feel homier with a nice hot bowl of ramen on a foggy day. Service was nice and staff were welcoming and accommodating. They served complimentary ice cream (random flavor) at the end of our meal, though sadly we both despise coconut, we appreciate the gesture. Might be better if they asked customers for flavor preference prior.

Popcorn Chicken ($8) - we had mixed reviews from my party, but I liked it

Nice spot with 2 of my favorites items - ramen & boba. The food was pretty good, and you get to choose the type of meat in your ramen. At the end they gave us mango sorbet, what a nice surprise. Popcorn Chicken ($8) - we had mixed reviews from my party. I liked it and thought the sauce was good. Black Garlic Oil Ramen ($18) - nicely presented dish but flavor-wise I liked my friend's Spicy Tonkatsu more. The egg and chashu were ok.

After hearing from a few friends about this great little joint out by the beach serving up some tasty fried chicken wings and beef, I knew I had to stop in and check it out the next time I was in the area. The only issue? I'm not often out on this part of Taraval anymore. So, when we recently found ourselves nearby, it felt so serendipitous! That is, until we walked up and realized that After Hours had been replaced by After Hours Ramen. What a bummer! Although, given how cold it was, getting a bowl of ramen was far from an awful consolation prize. Considering how their names are practically the same, I would assume that After Hours and After Hours Ramen are connected in some sort of way, if not owned by the same folks. Either way, the look and feel of this place is pretty different, with a cuter sort of aesthetic that you often see at boba joints (which they have a dozen varieties of). As for the menu, it's pretty typical yet still decently extensive, offering a half dozen types of ramen, along with a sizable selection of appetizers, udon, rice bowls, and entrees. -- CHICKEN KARAAGE...$9.50 I don't know if there was a mix-up or what, but this tasted a whole lot more like Popcorn Chicken than Chicken Karaage. That being said, this wasn't bad. The batter was decently crispy and the chicken itself was still fairly moist. -- TONKOTSU RAMEN with choice of meat (Chashu), Green Onions, Kikurage Mushrooms, Pickled Bamboo, Pickled Ginger, Naruto Maki, Marinated Egg, and Nori in a Pork Broth...$15.50 One of the palest tonkotsu ramen broths I've ever seen (it looked and tasted super milky), but the overall taste of the bowl, as a whole, was actually okay. The noodles had a nice chew to them, the chashu was thick and lean yet flavorful, and there was a fair amount of toppings. -- AGEDASHI TOFU...$6.50 Great to look at, but much less so to eat. On the plus side, the portion was generous and the sauce wasn't too salty. On the other, the sauce was bland, the batter was so thin it practically melted away, and it was almost impossible to pick up the tofu (fell apart so easily). SKIP. -- CRISPY PORK with Rice, Miso Soup, and Salad...$20.50 I wouldn't have got this if I knew "Crispy Pork" meant tonkatsu (why call it "katsu" elsewhere on the menu but not here?). Even worse, the taste of this wasn't worth the money. While the miso soup and salad were fine, both the tonkatsu batter and the pork itself were fairly dry. As a few others have already mentioned, the workers here are friendly, but service seemed a little disorganized, which was unexpected since it's not like they're newly opened. One worker, in particular, seemed lost - floating around like he was trying to find something to do, but never doing much. In fact, if not for the older worker who was constantly hustling around, we probably would've had to wait 10-15 minutes to order as, after seating us, that first guy didn't come back until well after the second one had already helped us. Since there aren't a ton of ramen/noodle soup options around this part of the Sunset (odd considering how cold it can get out here), After Hours Ramen is a great option to have when the mood strikes and/or when the weather gets as cold as it was a few weeks ago. However, I can't say I found the food to be as good as others seem to. While the ramen is decent enough to satisfy a craving for something warm and soupy, I don't feel like it'd be that hard to find comparable and better ramen elsewhere. Plus points for the complimentary scoops of ice cream, though.

Fairly new ramen spot in the sunset that I tried on a Thursday afternoon, not packed, got served pretty quickly We ordered: 1. Popcorn chicken ($9.50) -fresh and hot, not oily at all -not too salty, pairs well with spicy mayo sauce -overall was alright, could've been more flavorful and crispy 2. Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen ($16.50) -spicy broth with springy noodles that aren't too chewy or too soft -chashu was tender -spice slightly overpowers to flavor of the broth, might try it without spice next time -overall balanced and has nice sides -overall was good 3. Black garlic oil ramen ($18.50) -Absolutely amazed by the flavor of the broth!! -I love a strong garlic taste and this brother really delivered that and more -I would definitely come back for the rich black garlic flavor 4. Salmon teriyaki ($17.50) -simple rice bowl that came with a salad and miso soup -we were surprised by how generous the salmon portion was, definitely worth it to get this After our meal, we were also gifted complementary mango ice cream. Although the store is a bit small and the seats are wooden benches and hard chairs, the food tasted great. Would definitely come here again for a casual reasonably priced meal with friends!

The space is pretty small, but we were able to sit down right away on a Sunday night. I ordered the spicy tonkatsu. I didn't get any, but there is bubble tea available! I thought the ramen was good, the noodles themselves didn't absorb a lot of flavor from the broth, but that didn't bother me much since I just sipped the broth as I was eating. I didn't think it was spicy, but the flavor more than made up for it! After you're done, you get a small helping of ice cream which was really refreshing after having a bowl of hot soup. The service was pretty fast and they made sure that we were enjoying everything throughout the meal. Our waiter was polite and friendly. I would definitely recommend coming here, especially because it was reasonably priced! My bowl was $16, so much cheaper than other places throughout the city! Next time I go, I would love to try some of their bubble tea :)

I was taking one of my Sunset Dunes strolls when I decided to walk a bit further on Taraval to see if there were any lunch possibilities. More befitting of its After Hours moniker, I think this was a more generic burger-and-wings spot before it evolved into its current izakaya identity. I wasn't in a particular mood for ramen, but the idea of slurping udon was tickling my fancy. With only one other customer in the place, I just popped in and ordered the $13 Tempura Udon which came with four shrimp tempura. The noodles were appropriately thick and soft, not quite as plentiful as I was hoping for. However, the green onion, bok choy, and naruto maki helped fill out the bowl nicely (Photo 10). I thought I should have something healthy to balance out the carbs, so I ordered the $3 Steamed Mixed Veggies consisting of broccoli florets and carrot slices (Photo 8). It was all pretty good, quite unexpected in these parts. Open every day except Monday, they close at 10PM, which I'm guessing is 'after hours' in the Outer Sunset. FOOD - 4 stars...comfy udon bowls with crispy tempura AMBIANCE - 4 stars...compact spot but enough room for seating and messages of affirmation SERVICE - 4 stars...quietly efficient...and they hand out a complimentary mini-scoop of mochi ice cream TOTAL - 4 stars...ramen next?...probably not after hours though RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? Veggie tempura
Ryan R.

Ordered their black garlic oil ramen and veggie tempura from Uber Eats--both were delicious. I loved the light, crispy batter on the tempura. The ramen had all the toppings I wanted, and the broth was rich and full of umami. Can't say much about the service and ambiance since I didnt go to their restaurant.

We've been meaning to try this place out! We had take-out next door and peeked at their menu while passing by. It's been in my bookmarks. So we went for dinner one evening on a weekday. This spot has only about 7 tables, but we managed to snag a table around 7 pm. After looking at the menu, both of us wanted black garlic ramen, so we ordered 2 bowls. One bowl had a soft and jammy egg while the other was fully hard boiled. I guess the eggs are inconsistent for doneness? In any case, the broth was nice and garlicky. Noodles were well cooked and I liked the added toppings of corn, kikurage mushrooms, bamboo shoots, green onion and seaweed, but I found that the red pickled ginger could have been left out or off to the side as it didn't mesh well with the black garlic flavor. The menu stated bok choy as a topping, but I didn't see any. Even without it, there was still plenty in the bowl. When we got the bill, the lady also gave us 2 tiny scoops of mango ice cream in a plastic cup! That was a very nice after dinner sweet treat! All in all, it was a decent, satisfying bowl of ramen and we would come again! Maybe next time I'll try a boba drink too.

I've been wanting to try this spot because it's close to my home. It did not disappoint!!! The spot is small with seating for maybe about 15-20. The service was GREAT!! Super friendly and they made our order correctly! We got the tom yum udon (really good flavor and has a kick to it), spicy tonkotsu ramen (again really good flavor), shoyu garlic edamame, and we tried the lychee storm drink. We would totally order all of this food again!!! Also if you dine in you get a little bit of ice cream and mint on the the house! If you don't feel like leaving the house they have FREE DELIVERY within two miles of their place and as long as they're not super busy. This is truly a hidden little gem! Check them out and if you go to the farmer's market on Sundays by SI they have a stall there. FYI

Chicken teriyaki bowl

First time coming here, my husband and I didn't know what to expect. Place is small and cozy. The staff were friendly and attentive. Food came out fast also the server was very respectful. Their menu is simple yet straightforward. You definitely won't have any problem navigating and making your choices on what to order. Food was fresh and made with care. Everything was delicious! Will definitely be coming back next time but along with our kids so they can try too.

Went here for a quick lunch and got their spicy ramen soup. The food had a nice kick to it and was very flavorful. The staff was very nice and welcoming too. I also got their edamame which was very good as well. The place is small and cute but a little hard to find. I would definitely recommend this place!

Alicia T.

I agree with other reviewers that the broths here are surprisingly flavorful. It satisfied my need for ramen on a cloudy day but I wouldn't say it was my favorite ever. Service was nice and attentive, ambience was cute and cozy. Definitely a more Chinese take on ramen judging by the flavors. Not a terrible option.

I was by myself and wanted to have a quick eat. This place has unique ramen so I decided to come again (also SF/bay area only in the US). We were a large group of 15, including several kids, and we completely understand that the restaurant is small and accommodating a group our size can be challenging. We waited in line for almost an hour with around 6 children. During the wait, a staff member named Sue came outside, asked how many people were in our group, and handed us menus. Since it was our first visit, we were naturally asking questions and trying to understand the menu. Unfortunately, throughout the interaction, her body language and expressions felt impatient and unwelcoming. There was visible frustration and eye-rolling, which made us feel uncomfortable rather than welcomed. Even after we were seated, the experience continued to feel tense. One of the toddlers in our group started crying briefly -- something fairly common with young children -- and we were told to "keep it low out of respect." While we absolutely respect other diners, the way it was communicated felt lacking in empathy, especially on a busy Mother's Day with families dining out. A small gesture of kindness or understanding could have gone a long way. Instead, my friend felt compelled to take the child outside, which was disappointing. Additionally, after being seated, we had to remind the staff multiple times to come take our orders. What makes this especially unfortunate is that the ramen itself was truly delicious and lived up to the hype. The food was excellent, which is why this experience was so disappointing overall. I hope management takes this feedback seriously because customer service and hospitality matter just as much as the food experience. Unfortunately, this was not the ideal way to end our Mother's Day celebration.

They not only refunded the ramen with the issue but generously refunded the entire meal for our party. I truly appreciate the follow-up, accountability, and care--it made a big difference. I came to Hinodeya Ramen today with my partner, and this visit was really disappointing, especially considering I've been coming here for years. On a positive note, my Tokyo Duck ramen was actually very good, great portion and rich, flavorful broth. We also had gyoza and hot sake, which were enjoyable. Ambiance was a bit noisy. However, my partner ordered the beef sukiyaki ramen, and when it came out, there was a thick, short, wavy hair in the bowl, clearly not something that should ever be in food. This is a serious contamination issue. We tried to get our server's attention, and I understand it was busy, but being busy is not an excuse when it comes to food safety. Eventually, another server came over. We showed him the issue, expecting at least a proper apology or some explanation of what happened. Instead, he just took the bowl away and said a quick "I'm sorry" no explanation, no reassurance, nothing. They brought out a new bowl of ramen, but at that point, the experience was already ruined. It's hard to continue eating normally after something like that, it honestly just stays in your mind. What makes this more frustrating is that I've been here many times before with friends, family, and coworkers, and when everything goes right, it's great. But when something goes wrong, the response is just a simple "sorry" with no accountability or communication. Even on my last visit a few months ago, the broth was bland and the response was the same just "I'm sorry." At a minimum, for an issue this serious, there should be clear communication, reassurance about food safety, and a more professional response. Because of both past and current experiences, I don't think I'll be coming back. I really hope they improve their service and train staff to handle serious situations like this more appropriately.

The wait for a table was 20 mins or we can share a large table with random people and be seated immediately. We were hungry. We went with the large shared table. Pleasantly, there was more than enough room. There were at least 1-2 seats in between the three groups on each side that were there- a solo diner, a small family of 3, and my group of 4. I ordered the Karaka Spicy, my bf ordered Akamaru Modern, his sister ordered Miso, and I don't remember what her friend got- I think it was also Karaka spicy. My bf and I ordered the Treasure plate on the side to share and a side of spicy paste because I know Japanese spicy is barely spicy (from someone who grew up eating SEA spicy). Karaka Spicy had a nicely balance tonkotsu mouth feel and pork flavor. Broth was a little salty. I was correct to assume that it wasn't spicy because I used half of the side of spicy paste and I still didn't think it was spicy enough. Chashu was cooked fine. Notes: - I wished I would've asked if they could swap the thin noodles for the thick ones. I love the chew thicker noodles provide. - Noodles were cooked al dente. Akamaru Modern tasted very similar to Karaka spicy without the spicy. My bf used the other half of the spicy paste as dip for his toppings. He enjoyed it. Miso was a lighter broth (obvi) with a good umami flavor and was not watered down. Solid. She loved it. I have never seen her finish a whole bowl of ramen before. There was a server in training that took our order with the help of the trainer- he did great. Staff was attentive with our waters. Bussers were also quick to notice and remove empty plates and bowls regularly making for an easy clean up after we leave and kept the shared table clutter free. Interior was modern, but casual. We asked our waiter if we could have a little more heat, and he nodded and brought over a tiny dipping-bowl-sized portion of some red paste with no explanation. There was no mention that it would cost extra. After finishing our meal, we were surprised to see a $5 charge on the bill for the "extra spice." You can sit outside too as lots of tables right on the street but it was way too cold for me. Service was quick and I ordered a Yuzu Zen (vegan) ramen. I wanted to try something different than their signature ramen. This ramen was cooked in the traditional Japanese Buddhist temple way, which was a bonus for me. I am a practicing Buddhist and have meditated at various different temple organizations and I enjoy temple cooking as its usually lighter but still very soul nourishing. The broth is lighter and its a vegan dashi broth and comes with zest of yuzu (its like a Japanese lemon), bamboo shoots, crispy kale and sweet fried tofu. I enjoyed this bowl of noodles with soup and the broth was hot, so it warmed me up. I was not really a fan of the inari (sweet fried tofu) as it was just too sweet for me.
