After Eden is still refining its concept and identity but even not fully realized is a fantastic time regardless of why or when you visit. The coffee is as dope as the cocktails, and it's fun no matter what time you go. You may find a DJ there day or night, an open air vibe in nice weather, laptops in the afternoon, dinner and drinks all night long. It's probably a blessing in disguise I live uptown, otherwise I'd be spending money here at all hours of the day.
I first visited After Eden on a Saturday afternoon for a coffee, and also just to check out the space. Something was quirky and intriguing about the vibe -- it was probably around 2pm, and there was a DJ playing very good daytime house, some folks drinking coffee, some drinking some harder bevvies, some folks working on laptops. Somehow it all seemed fair game and appropriate, which was fun. Though I can't speak to the daytime food here, I can speak to the cold brew. And that, my friends, is some of the best cold brew I've ever had. A small, smooth, potent cup of gold. Interestingly when we came here for drinks at night we met the owner who said what we really needed to try was the traditional Vietnamese coffee drinks. If the cold brew is any indication, I'm sure those are just as good, if not better.
After dinner that night, maybe around 10:30 or 11, we popped back in for round 2. No DJ playing this time, but lots more people, and very very lively. We snagged two seats at the bar (which we often prefer anyway) for some more adult offerings this time (not that coffee is for children, but you know what I mean). I appreciate that the cocktail menu allows you to either stay somewhat in your comfort zone or go with the drink equivalent of cliff diving. I of course had to start with the latter, which is why I ordered Pho-tini (Casa Lotos sotol, Highland Park 12 yrs Tres Tribus cushie, Pho sweet vermouth reduction Umami bitters, Lemon & Orange essence, Beef chips). I have been to many a cocktail bar at this point and have had some wacky, creative, impressive, mind-blowing drinks, but I have never ever been given beef chips to enjoy alongside a drink to enhance the experience. This is certainly not something you'd want to have every day, but the drink itself was unique, umami, complex but still balanced, and of course the saltiness and umami of the beef trip added more savory notes to the mix.
I then tried the AE Negroni (Rosaluna mezcal, Lo-Fi aperitif gentian amaro, Lo-Fi aperitif sweet vermouth, Campari) which, relatively speaking, is on the "safer" side as far as drinks go. Still not your standard mezcal negroni (though I love those too), as the mezcal was a little less smoky than many and the amaro added some additional intrigue to the bitter element of the drink. Very thoughtfully done in a totally different way than the first.
