Afro Taco has been around for a few years. They're based out of Hillside so it's nice to see them setup shop here semi-officially. Friendly service, I always like when the staff will talk and joke with you. There is parking on the nearest side street (Florence Ave), but no parking on the Main Street (Liberty Ave). I submitted updates to their info, but in case it doesn't work, their current address is the lot next to 1350 Liberty Ave, Hillside, NJ 07205. You can't really park in the lot itself as there is no driveway. You'd have to drive over the curb & sidewalk. I mean, I guess you could if you were willing to do that. Had the Oxtail empanadas, Walking (Beef) Taco, you provide the chips of your choice. Not a problem there is a 7-Eleven directly across the street, & the Oxtail Burrito. Everything was very good. Okay this is a review I genuinely hope I can update on a happier note in the future. I was super excited to try Afro Taco. My first experience just wasn't the best but I truly do want to give it another try. So the website says they arrive at 12 pm but IG says 12:30 pm , I got there at 12:30 pm but the truck didn't actually pull up ready for service until 1 pm. There were a couple of people waiting and all were a little frustrated because when we called to see where the truck was we either received no answer or "I'll be there in 15" which turned to 30. I really wanted to order some of the other dishes but due to having to leave I could only order the tacos since those were the quickest. I was looking forward to the burst of Ghanaian flavors in the jollof but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The tacos were flavorful but just kind of tasted like regular tacos and brown rice. Maybe I set my expectations too high? I'm not sure. The owner was nice enough but considering that he got there so late and spoke to a few of the customers that were waiting, he could've Atleast extended a mini discount or extra side, honestly anything for opening so much later than listed on his website and Instagram. I do love supporting new businesses and this one is thriving via social media. I'm hoping that I just caught him on a bad day because we're all humans and we all have days. I attended a festival this weekend in Newark and this amazing food truck was in attendance and I now understand why the line was so long. The tacos were actually life changing and the jollof rice was some of the most authentic jollof I've have since leaving Accra. read more

Service: Good, they were good with suggestions and prompt with taking orders. The food was prepared fairly quickly. Food: Delicious, a little on the greasy side (hence the 4 stars). The salmon was well prepared and the salad dressing was so good (glad I got 2 of them). If you are not a sauce person just ask for the sauce on the side but it is delicious. I've been wanting to try this for quite some time. I ordered the Afro taco bowl, steak, I also ordered the blackened basa and shrimp with jollof rice and chicken quesadillas. Ok so, the taco bowl was good. I'm assuming this is their house sauce on it, I liked it. It gives me bbq sauce family taste, so if you like that then you'll enjoy this. The blackened basa and shrimp was delightful. It is a little spicy spice so if you can't hand at all, this might not be for you. But if you can take a little kick of pepper and then some you'll enjoy it. And the shrimp was nice sized thick shrimp. I appreciated that! The chicken quesadilla was good? That saucy sauce they have is mixed in the middle, so be aware of that if you're looking for the more original taste of a quesadilla. This is a black owned business that I was soo excited to support, and I will be returning to continue to support them. I've bought food to eat from this food truck three times now. I have to say, I love the food! We get the chicken bowl with jollof rice and salad and also the crab meat tacos with jollof rice. First off, I'm used to eating Nigerian jollof rice. This is Ghanaian rice and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The spice level was just at the right level for me. Also the chicken is cooked well and perfectly moist with every succulent bite. The sauce on top goes well with all the food. The salad is fresh too! Now my personal favorite is the crab meat tacos. They use real crab meat! I know because I still had a micro spect of a shell in my meat. This absolutely does not bother me because it's further evidence of the real crab meat being used. I hate imitation crab meat. The sauce on the taco is delicious! Honestly I spend no less than $32 each time I come to this food truck and so I instituted a rule that I come here once a month to curb my spending. Honestly though, I love this fusion food truck. The two cuisines have the same roots and that's why they go well together. There is always a good number of people waiting outside the food truck, especially in the summer! By far the worst food truck experience in my life. Avoid if you're looking for a quick, well priced meal. My order of fries and a shrimp burrito took 43 minutes and my buddy's chicken quesadilla took 52 minutes. Yes, I timed it because it had taken so long. OPERATIONS: Went here and wanted to love it based on social media hype and good reviews. There were 4-5 people waiting for their food ahead of me. I expected a 10-20 minute wait, maybe 25 if they were slow. I was not expecting the wait would be nearly an hour. This is simply too long for a food truck. Order fulfillment seemingly is in scrambled order, as some customers were served their dishes within 20 minutes of arrival. I saw many customers arrive after me and leave much before me, which was incredibly frustrating. There were four employees in the truck. Two were sitting for the majority of the time and not doing anything, even when the grill is large enough for two. The difference in time between my and my buddy's order was 9 minutes, although we ordered at the exact same time. Standing outside, my burrito became cold by the time we were able to eat. SERVICE: I did not receive any notice that the wait would be nearly an hour or even any estimation at all on completion time. Had I known the wait would be longer than 30 minutes, I would've gone elsewhere. Not once during my 50 minute wait, when I was in eyeshot of the truck the entire time, did the employees notify me of the status of my burrito. This would be normal for a 20 minute wait, but for such a long wait, some confirmation that my order was actually being cooked would be nice. PRICE: The value is poor. My burrito was $15 and fries were $5. The volume of the burrito is about 1/2 a chipotle burrito. Much skinnier and shorter. For the $15 price tag, I was expecting a very beefy food truck burrito. The fries were standard size. This would be a good value at $8, a standard value at $11, and a terrible value at the actual price of $15. One could go to a genuine restaurant and get a great burrito for $15. FOOD: The burrito tasted good. A bit sweet for my taste, with the jollof rice reminding me of a sweeter ketchup-y taste. The shrimp were well cooked. However, my burrito did not include sour cream as listed on the menu. Small point to nitpick, but it shows the inattentiveness and lack of detail. I considered giving a 2/5 because the burrito tasted pretty good, but ultimately the lack of consistency between the menu and the actual item reduced it to a 1/5. read more

Absolutely AMAZINGGGG Food! No matter what you order everything is Always delicious. This concept was Brilliant! Executed brilliantly and I can't wait for them to get a Brick and Mortar so I can sit down with my family. Went with an appetite and left hangry! Afro Taco was ill-prepared and unprofessional at the Afro Taco Newark Food Truck Festival. We placed our order at 4:30pm and got our money back at 5:30pm. We noticed a lot of people standing around the truck when we placed our order but just assumed there was a little wait because it was popular. When we placed the order for two Jollof Bowls, we were told it would take 30min. Thirty minutes into the wait, you could tell the crowd was getting impatient. There were approximately 40 people waiting around the truck for their food. The woman taking orders said they needed five more minutes because the grill needed to be used to reheat the rice. I noticed one order would come out every 15-20 min, and knew it wasn't going to be just a five minute wait since people that ordered before us were still there. Even more frustrating was that the owner was just walking around the event socializing while the crew sank! The cooks would also pop out of the truck to go hug it up with their friends. They even had someone drop off a bottle of liquor and cups so they could start their happy hour - while their customers were upset. Really!?! Even if the food is good, they need to work on being more efficient and better communication/customer service. Thankfully we got our money back. Everyone should have been offered a discount or the option to get their money back along with an apology. Glad there was house music to drown out the sound of our stomachs growling.
