A 24-hour Jamaican spot? Yes, please! After an exhausting day of adulting, we ended up here around 2:38 a.m. and I'm so glad we did. This place was exactly what you hope for when you're looking for amazing food at an unexpected hour. The food was absolutely delicious: fresh, flavorful, and cooked with so much love. We had the oxtail, jerk chicken, peas and rice, and cabbage. Unfortunately, they were out of macaroni and cheese, but everything else was so good that it didn't even matter. The prices are fair for the portions and the convenience of having a 24-hour Jamaican spot available when you need it. That alone is a huge plus. The staff were friendly and welcoming and took our order with a smile!! The area is a little rough around the edges, but we felt fine grabbing our food and heading out. Based on Yelp reviews, I decided to check out Sun Island Plate because I was craving an authentic, fresh, hot Jamaican meal. I have to say, the food was flavorful and delicious--special shoutout to the chef! The only downside is the price. The plates are on the expensive side, so be prepared to spend a little more when you visit. I guess because there aren't many Jamaican restaurants in the area, the prices are higher. Even so, I think it's worth trying. I ordered the small oxtail meal and the sweet chili salmon meal, and both were satisfying and full of flavor. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience. I've rated before I do enjoy the porridge and the score salt fish . Recently had salmon and yea looks great but the veggies gave unthawed and under cooked water mushy. But the stew chicken was pretty decent . And didn't like that the sorrel seemed unsealed and spilling all over the bag read more

Sun Island Plate serves up good food and they are always open to satisfy your hunger. I was there recently with a good friend and we were starving around 0600 and Sun Island Plate was near, so we headed there. It's a simple place and presentable at that early hour. The food was under cover on your left and front. There are about three tables and a counter where one can sit. We ate at one of the tables, but I suspect most of their business is take out and via their food truck. People were coming in the door at that early hour, so Sun Island Plate must be busy during the day and evening. We ordered the large curry chicken with rice and beans, which comes with cabbage and wet plantains. Four pieces of chicken is generous for about $15 each. The value proposition is not to be overlooked. The chicken did not taste like it was marinated, so the flavor did not go to the bone. However, it is likely they are serving up so much food they don't have time to marinate the chicken. Their food truck pulled up around 0800, so I am certain they have a production schedule to meet. The chicken was tasty and not overcooked and the rice was not overcooked as well. In fact, neither was the cabbage overcooked. The cabbage was fresh and the wet plantains were great as well. They know what they are doing here. Sun Island Plate is where you can eat generously and not break the bank. More is on the menu. Service is good and prompt and a nice ginger beer for us rounded it all out nicely for $37 and change for two hungry people. 3.2 stars! read more

WHAT I ATE - New Jersey @ Sun Island Plate 820 S Orange Ave, Newark, NJ 07106 After fasting for a medical procedure I was hungry as a horse! Time for Jamaican food! I left the War Related Injury Center in East Orange NJ and took advantage of all the great Jamaican food in the area by stopping to break my fast at Sun Island Plate. This was a good choice, as the food was fresh, hot and had all the Carribean flavors that I was craving. We had the melt-in-your mouth stewed Oxtail with Rice and Peas (really Red Kidney Beans) and fried plantain. We also tried the Curry Goat, Fried Dumplings (which were more like Jamaican Festivals) and Jamaican Beef Patties. My wife also noted the Jamaican Fried Dumplings were just like the Samoan Panikeke that we had tried at Tia's Taste of Samoa in Hawaii. They also reminded her of Okinawan Fried doughnuts called Andagi. The Benjos Sea Moss with Peanut drink was not for me. Chunky, gelatinous, mild peanut flavor was just too alien for me to enjoy. If it was a smooth, peanut milkshake, I would have liked it, but it was too odd. Not for me. There was plenty of seating as we were there around 2:30 PM. The restaurant was clean and service was quick to get food on the table. What's nice is the place is open 24 hours and close to Newark International Airport! This staff is very kind and extremely friendly. This isn't a place you sit down and eat at. The floors aren't the cleanest and I had second thoughts about taking my food home, but I did anyway. I paid $19.99 for the platter that's pictured. The food was absolutely amazing. I love Caribbean food of any kind, so I had high expectations and was not disappointed. This was my first time eating here and I ordered from Yelp wondering if the portions would match the price & they definitely did. I'm only giving 3 stars because the place definitely needs to be cleaned and idk too many people who would find interest in visiting a place where environmental conditions are an issue. I actually love this place and the people who run it. I love me some Carribean food. The ackee and salt fish with dumplings are always a great deal and good portions. The red snapper escovitch tends to be a favorite of mine and I try it mostly everywhere. The snapper is large and cooked well. Crispy exterior flaky interior. The pickled veggies are my fav. The Rice and peas actually have flavor here. My eldest son loves the coconut salmon from here. I've yet to be disappointed here. Unlike many restaurants in the area the owner puts in work for his customers. I have eaten from Sun Island Plate many time and had many dishes. My go to for dinner is the mashed potatoes and coconut salmon. Delicious and delightful. The oxtail rice and peas is always on point. A little further into detail the owner and chef only uses fresh ingredients fresh herbs and spices and also have the food marinated a day prior. Food always prepped ready to go tell he's sold out. Literally sold out that's how good the food is. The Hennessy wings are to go for when you need a quick bite to eat. His salads are phenomenal and healthy.
