    Blackened Salmon
    Nephthalie E.

Ordered through Uber eats and it took a while to arrive but well worth the wait! The blackened salmon was delicious and well cooked; my boyfriend ordered the turkey chops. He's VERY picky but thought they were one of the best turkey chops he's ever had. My sides were the creamy spinach and rice with peas. I've had pretty bad creamy spinach in the past so my standards were really low. To my surprise their spinach was nothing like I tried before; the right amount of creaminess and not salty. It was very tasty! The rice was also delicious. My boyfriend got the Mac and cheese and green beans side, I was able to try the Mac and it's a 10/10! Overall very satisfied with the quality of my meal and can't wait to order again!

My cousin and I were trying to find a place to eat because we were starving. So, I went to handy dandy Yelp to see what good places we could find in the area. This was one of the first places I saw with rave reviews.. And I liked the pictures so we made our way here. There was a couple eating and when their food came out, I asked them to tell me how it was and they both said their meals were delicious. We opted to get a bunch of items and split them. I decided on the oxtails and grits. I never had this combination of foods so I was ecstatic to try it. I ordered the barbecue wings for an appetizer. These wings were some of the best wings I had ever had in my life. My cousin got the fried shrimp as an appetizer and they were fried perfectly. I wasn't disappointed at all. The oxtails and grits tasted like heaven. The mac and cheese was decadent to say the least. The service was on point also. Mo was so friendly and even got us a referral to get pedicures afterwards. I'll be back very soon to show my mother a good time.

Oh my gawd! where do I begin???!!!! I forgot to check in... This place has been bookmarked for several years. Lol I don't understand what goes on with me because I live close enough to here and yet haven't made it my way to visit...how come???? Well I just left this place and was very hungry, couldn't wait to get home to eat, we had to dig in right on the corner, in the car lmao! So glad to sample it while it was HOT and fresh! I'm telling you, this food was well worth the money and wait! Let me tell you a little something about this place Located on Springfield Ave in Newark, cars flying by so keep a keen eye out or else you'll miss it. Walk in, very clean, order food to go, small seating area but I don't think you can eat here. Service was pleasant enough and the environment appeared clean and well organized. Now warning, this is an cook to order establishment so there is quite some wait time involved. We waited almost an hour which seems ridiculous, but actually well worth the wait. Food was so fresh and delicious, I was so impressed! Ordered several things and here is what I thought about the food: Idc, I'll eat dessert first lol First thing I tasted was the corn soufflé muffin and MY GOD! This is a MUST, I can come here just for these alone! Food is very rich, there's butter in everything, I can taste it! Am I complaining...ABSOLUTELY NOT! Let's rate the rest, shall we! Oxtails....1000 stars! Perfectly cooked, the gravy very flavorful,PERFECT! Rice and peas...PERFECT! BBQbeef short ribs...PERFECT! Collards...PERFECT! Crab cakes were good but a little too much filler, but the remoulade that goes with it accompanied well! Mac was good, not my fave, but re-orderable lol Crab Mac was pretty good! I'm telling you, somebody done put they FOOT in this food! (This is the HIGHEST COMPLIMENT for those who don't know!) I ain't lyin! This food was sooo good! All in all I would urge anyone to try this place if you are craving soul food! The food is really delicious and satisfying. Well worth the wait.. I can't wait to come back to try other things on the menu! However, I will order online and pick up so I won't be waiting for so long... Awesome job guys!

I really love supporting small businesses especially black businesses. The reviews were great and I wanted to try this place. I hate giving 3 stars but that is what I have to give. Although, everything looked and smelled amazing, everything was very salty. Not sure what happened but there wasn't a dish that was not salty. Couldn't finish it. I had the blacked catfish with beans and kale. My partner had the yellow rice, plantains and fried chicken. The only item not salty was the plantains. I'm sure it was a one off. I'll definitely try it again just to be sure.

Damn damn damn!! This food was so so good. Both meals were amazingly good and the sides complimented the chicken very well. You can tell that who ever made this out some love into it. It was very satisfying. Thanks will be trying some of their other items soon!!

I'm glad to be updating my review to 4 stars. Since my first experience I've ordered three more times. Those deliveries included: honey bbq shrimp once with collards/cabbage mix and rice and pigeon peas. Super yummy flavored shrimp, they were fried so softens a little in transit. Fresh veggies and authentic spices used in the rice. Nice olive surprise. The other time ordered sides included Mac and cheese, and creamed spinach. Mac can use some seasoning. Louisiana bbq shrimp with creamed spinach and garlic mash. I wish the shrimp were shelled for this particular meal and the sauce was more contained because it spilled over into my spinach and potatoes. For the potatoes that wasn't too bad, but the creamed spinach consistency was messed up. Other than that solid meal. Shrimp and grits again. Not as great as the first time but could have just needed to been heated up. Corn soufflé muffins. These are divine. I make a delicious spoon bread myself so I was pleased. Spend the extra 1.75 for the two pieces. Corn and crab chowder was cool. Black beans and white rice. Definitely delivers on promised Latin soul flavors. Just wish white rice came with beans purchase because $4 extra for it was surprising. Chocolate crunch cake. Good. Cake is light and fluffy wish it had more crunch and less whipped cream, but I was sad when it was gone. Overall Monique is very humble and polite. She uses great spices and delivers well on taste. The restaurant follows special notes in uber eats or calls to let you know they can't. I also like the little candies they include to finish your meal. I'm looking forward to dining in when that is available.

    Fried chicken & mashed potatoes
    Sam M.

Price - The portion sizes are worth the price. Pictures doesn't do it justice. Time - It's all made to order, so I expected the wait. I used Uber Eats and ordered 5 hours ahead, but it still took longer than expected to arrive. It's not a place I'd order from if I was starving. Shrimp & grits - The sauce to grits ratio was skewed. It's a generous serving of grits, almost too much considering it comes with 8 shrimp. The grits were sort of gummy, I just ate the shrimp BBQ chicken - The chicken is well cooked. The sauce was a bit tart so I ended up removing the skin. I ordered the mashed potatoes & Mac and cheese. The mashed potatoes were tasty (bit heavy on the garlic) but I didn't like the flavor of the Mac and cheese. I can't pinpoint what I didn't like but I threw all of it away. Cornbread - best part of the meal. It tastes sweet like corn muffin but not too sweet. Empanadas - It was surprisingly tasteless. I never had an empanada that was bland, and was thankful I had some left over salsa rosada from a Colombian restaurant. Fried chicken - very crunchy, but it tastes like flour. I added bbq sauce, hot sauce, ketchup but that only seemed to make it worse. I wouldn't order from here again. It was a disappointment just given the high ratings. Most of it had no flavor and I had to modify the dish to make it edible. The portion sizes are generous but it didn't matter because I couldn't eat it.

Honey BBQ Wings (10 pc) Chicken Wings Honey BBQ Salmon Buttered Corn Baked Macaroni N' Cheese

So I came here on Juneteenth because my partner wanted to only spend money at black owned businesses that day. It us 3 hours to find a good aoul food spot that didnt have a 2+ hour wait. I called and the lady who answered was really nice. I ordered 10 piece wings, 10 piece honey bbq wings dinner with mac and fries, honey bbq salmon dinner with mac and buttered corned, banana pudding, and 2 uptowns. Everything was around 45$ which wasnt bad for the amount of food we ordered. They told me 45 min and i was excited knowing I wouldnt have to wait hours. 50 min later i went to get my food and it was a few people outside waiting. They only allowed 1 person at the door at a time due to COVID. When I asked for my order, they told me another 30 min. In my mind, im like ok, i know soul food takes a while, ill wait. 35 min later, i went to check my food again, they told me another 10 min or so. By this time, im like, i have no choice but to wait because its been over an hour and i was hungry. Thankfully the nice lady let me sit inside and wait for my food, which I appreciated since it was dark and that neighborhood is not the best. After getting my food.... LAWD let me tell you, that chicken was FIRE. It was soo crispy and well seasoned. My partner liked his honey bbq wings as well. We ate in a parking lot and couldnt wait to get home. I lived 40 min away anyway and didnt want my food to get cold. I didnt really like my salmon dinner, not that it was not good, just not my preference. But basically everything was good. My only suggestion is, more cheese in the mac and stronger cups for the uptowns. Otherwise, keep doing your thing. I defiantly will drive 40 min to get this food again. #SupportBlackBusinesses

I always order shrimp and grits from this spot as it's delicious. Today I wanted to try the oxtail. It's hard for me to order oxtails as I only like it when made by Jamaicans. I like the thicker sauce and rich taste. Even my Latinos oxtail are questionable. Too watery or too much fat. But this was really good. It was pretty consistent and meaty. Not disappointed at all. The Mac and cheese was amazing!!! The collard greens amazing. Will def order Mac and cheese from here every time I place an order. The customer service was phenomenal! I spoke with a Monique and Sonia who were both very understanding (had a mix up with my Uber eats order) and professional when handling the issue. I love a great customer service! I have never visited the location as I stay in the ironbound section but I will continue to order online and enjoy this ricosoul food deliciousness only open on the weekends :). It's the Weekend, Lets Eat, Love & Live!

Fried whiting, mac&cheese and mixed greens

They would have gotten 5 stars, except for the long wait. Fish, greens and mac were all delicious especially the greens WOW. Theirs might be better than my own. The crab was is also very tasty. Why it took an hour is a little beyond me, though I think she works (cooks) alone. The other meal was a salad with grilled chicken. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes but thankfully the food is good, because if it weren't I'd be disappointed.

Honey BBQ shrimp with cabbage and green beans
    Michael K.

A must try in Newark We ordered honey BBQ chicken with creamed spinach and mac and cheese and honey BBQ shrimp with cabbage and green beans. One word to describe the main entrees...FLAVOR. You get a perfect mix of honey and bbq and the sauce is perfect for the pieces of chicken. Usually the sides are the supportive friends of the entree, but the sides themselves could be the spotlight. You can tell each side was made fresh, especially the green beans and spinach. The seasoning on each side was perfection. Tons of garlic was used it seemed like (which I love), and nothing felt like it was too overwhelming. flavor on point. Also, Monique is the sweetest. Our DoorDash order was originally cancelled by the driver, but Monique personally called me to get everything figured out. Really appreciated the gesture and her kindness. With the food being superb and the service being superb, this is a must-try, recommended, without a doubt give-a-shot restaurant. I'll definitely be coming back again soon to try the other things on the menu!!! FLAVOR!!!!!!
