I was to leave town for the holidays and decided to check my house for problems, one of which has been my ancient hot water heater. This was an incredible 35 years old, qualifying for the some kind of world record. Sure enough, water was leaking onto the floor. And on Sunday afternoon. So I left a message and wrote an email. Within an hour or so Helene responded that the owner, Neil, would come the next morning. Neil was on schedule and offered to try to fix the leak, but it was due to an old fitting that might result in a bigger leak, and anyway replacement was overdue. One reason I'd postponed this for so long was I knew the job wouldn't be easy. The unit was jammed into a very small utility closet next to the HVAC. Neil gave me a very reasonable estimate, I could leave and the repair would be done in two days. As it turned out, the person I was to visit developed Covid. So I got to see Alix and Daniel do the work. It was not an easy job, many connections were outdated and needed to be brought to current code. The new unit is better insulated than the old so it was larger as well. Plus the old unit weighed a ton due to years of mineral deposits in the tank. But these guys made it happen. The biggest issue: they simply could not keep appointments. Frequent no-shows, missed windows, and last-minute reschedules turned routine maintenance into a recurring hassle. The second issue: constant upselling. Nearly every visit came with a "the system is fine" but we recommend additional products or upgrades. The final incident made us cancel: They performed routine maintenance on a system that was working fine when they arrived. After the maintenance, the HVAC unit wouldn't turn on. We were told it was "about to fail" and the maintenance did not cause the failure. (Debatable.) Conveniently, they had the part on hand but would only install it if we paid out of pocket - even though the part was under warranty. (Don't worry, another company replaced the same part under warranty the following day.) I would think carefully before signing up for a membership.
