I have mixed feelings about my experience at AO. When I decided to straighten my teeth, I chose this office because they had sponsored community events in the past. My first impression was that the office had a loud, club-like atmosphere with very upbeat music and a young staff. Everyone was friendly and professional, but the environment felt a bit unusual for a medical setting, and I personally felt slightly out of place. During my consultation, I met with Dr. Larabee, who was personable and confident. He estimated that my Invisalign treatment would take 16 months. I was surprised, as my teeth were not severely misaligned -- mostly mild crowding in the lower teeth that developed with age. He explained that I also had a cross-bite and jaw alignment issues, so I trusted his recommendation and proceeded. After confirming my insurance covered about half the cost ($2,500), I moved forward. The initial appointment involved extensive imaging, scans, and photos. About four weeks later, I received my first set of aligners -- 28 trays to be changed weekly, covering roughly six months of treatment. Attachments ("buttons") were placed on my teeth by his assistants, and staff members showed me how to insert and remove the trays. I did find it unusual that there were no scheduled check-ins during those six months. As a first-time Invisalign patient, I expected at least one progress visit to ensure everything was moving properly and attachments were intact. I was told to contact them if I had issues. Due to unrelated medical appointments, I returned one month earlier than scheduled. Dr. Larabee was not happy that I moved my appointment up, but he indicated my progress was on track. His staff told me I still had about 11 months remaining, which surprised me because my teeth already looked nearly straight. Adjustments were made, including smoothing some edges and creating space between lower teeth to close a gap. New scans were taken for the next phase. When I returned for my second set of aligners, I was given only 9 weeks' worth and told I would be finished with my treatment afterward. This was unexpected given the original 16-month estimate. I did not receive a clear explanation for the shortened timeline. Additional attachments were added (also not communicated at my last visit), and one fell off the same day. The earliest repair appointment was a week later at a different office location, which was inconvenient. Ultimately, my active treatment lasted about 8 months -- roughly half the original estimate. While I was pleased to finish sooner, I was disappointed to learn that the total cost remained the same despite the significantly shorter treatment time. I had only 3 appointments with Dr. Larabee during the entire process. Patients should be aware that the fee is for the treatment plan as a whole, not the actual duration, and additional fees will apply if treatment extends beyond the estimate. I am not happy that I still owe $850 for a service I am no longer getting. At my final visit, the doctor was running about 30 minutes behind schedule. I expressed concerns that my crossbite did not feel fully aligned and his assistant agreed with me. Dr. Larabee said it was related to jaw structure rather than tooth position, but Invisalign should have fixed that issue. Minor contouring was performed, but not to the extent I had hoped for. I asked him to do a little more and he said no, because it wouldn't look feminine. I really like the look of the teeth that are all one length and a nice straight look across, but he wouldn't do that for mine. I was offered a retainer membership plan ($895 for four years plus $50 per replacement set), which also included some teeth whitening gel or the option to purchase retainers individually for $500 per set. I declined. Patients should carefully consider which option makes sense for their needs. My friend, who is a former hygienist, has had her retainers for years without any issues. It would have been nice for them to apply the $850 I owe toward the plan. The office provided a small "congratulations" gift (a bag of candy) and advised me to continue wearing my aligners full-time for another week until my nighttime retainers arrived. This did not make sense to me. Why not wear them only at night? When my retainers were ready, I was required to schedule a pickup appointment rather than simply stopping by, which felt unnecessary. Overall, my teeth do look better. However, the experience was marked by inconsistent communication, scheduling frustrations, and cost concerns. I recommend carefully reviewing the contract, asking detailed questions about timelines, fees, and follow-up care, and making sure you are comfortable with the treatment plan before proceeding. While the clinical outcome was mostly positive, I personally would choose a provider with clearer communication and a more patient-centered approach if I were to do this again. read more

We were told that our daughter's teeth would require either a 1 step or 2 step treatment process. Could not know until first step was complete. We paid full cash up front. After her first step was complete, we were so excited because her teeth looked perfectly aligned. However, they refused to give her a retainer despite our request for one. We were told to just wait and see. Well, her teeth reverted back to their initial appearance without use of a retainer and when we went back, we were told that she would need a complete treatment now. I got braces here in 2009, I was 16 and my mom did her research and by research I mean she went all out called many different places, took me to many consults and was finally thrilled when she found Advanced Orthodontics. Daughter started with Invisalign February, still had a baby tooth. It's may, still baby tooth. Have the ortho take it out. June My Childs trays don't fit and hurt. $500 later get regular braces. Check up isn't for 10 weeks... should be every 6 weeks. Baby tooth still not coming in. Appt last Wednesday just for a check up.. ask about her tooth not coming through(according to the dr it's not the tooth not breaking through bc of Invisalign....they wear them 22 hrs a day?? it's not detouring the process?) brakes a bracket less than 24 later and no appt until a week later. Show up 5 mins early, wait 10 mins evaluate the broken bracket, wait for Dr. Larrabee bc he's in a conference call, ask my daughter if she saved the bracket ?! No! I'm paying you. You even put on the same wires. Shame my daughter for eating a certain food. Please make sure you're checking yourself for what you say to young ladies. They already have enough to worry about. And to anger me more, I'm not the parent who sits in the waiting area, I go back with my child and listen to what is going on. So, when you ask me if I heard you. Yes, I heard you the first time Dr. Larrabee, because I'm engaged with what is going on with my child. No, she can't eat whatever she wants with braces and no she shouldn't be biting mints it will make the rest of her hardware more delicate. I'll be looking forward to the next appt. I went in to talk to Dr.Larrabee about the method he would use to expand my 7 year old's palate to correct her malocclusion. He uses braces whereas nearly every other orthodontist uses a rapid palate expander. Even though using braces to expand the palate is over 3X more expensive and takes twice as long, I came there to learn about it. Dr. Larrabee seemed proud and didn't like being questioned. He took on a defensive tone when I asked if there were any published studies in The Journal of Orthodontics supporting using braces to pull the palate apart. In a condescending manner as if he were saying something obvious to a backward person, he said, "Yeah, look them up on the internet." I found his defensiveness strange. I interpreted It as a lack of confidence in his unpopular method. He could only support his method with his opinions. To me he seemed like a salesman, selling himself directly to my child. He spoke primarily to her; "We're going to do this...." he would say to her enthusiastically. Or "Would you like......." Even the office is set up to be enthralling to a kid. But Dr. Lararabee made me feel like my questions and concerns were irritating. He wanted to close the sale and I wasn't responding like a wide-eyed child. I then went to another dentist (see my other review) who uses the only method recommended by the AAO. I questioned him in the exact same manner as I had Dr. Larrabee. The other orthodontist said "I will find articles in the Journal of Orthodontics for you, since you will not have access to those studies on your own." He not only took the time to explain his experiences and conclusions about the two methods, but found the articles and emailed them to me, Needless to say, I chose the other doctor. read more

I have to say that I like Dr. Larabee and his staff very much. I got my invisalign braces from him and appreciate the good service I've received. I was referred to him by my dentist when I expressed an interest in invisalign, and evidently my dentist notified his office that I might be coming. They actually called me and left a message asking if I would like to make an appointment. I liked this because (rather than feeling like they were trying to procure a client), I felt like they were being helpful and proactive with people like me who have insane schedules and tend to put things off as a result. His techs / assistants were great in getting me set up for invisalign and with answering any questions I have. I think he's also charming and has a great "chair-side" manner. Very personable and tries to relate to you as a person. I also have complete faith in his technical skills. The evening of the day I got my invisalign, he personally called my cell to see how things were feeling and if I had any questions. When was the last time your physician called you? Hmmm... So, again, great service! I haven't priced invisalign elsewhere, but I have to say that I was PLEASANTLY SHOCKED with how affordable the invisalign were at his office. I spent thousands less than I expected to - not sure if this related more to his prices or my incredible dental insurance (or both), so your experience may be different. There are only a few reasons why I can't give this place 5 stars. The number one reason is the back room where there is a row of patient chairs. Frankly, as an adult, I don't like having my mouth spread eagled where the moms and siblings are walking around checking out what their kids are having done and checking me out in the process. As an adult orthodontic patient, I would appreciate a little bit more privacy. The other reason is that it's loud in there! I like the choice of music they play, but between the young patients and the loud TV/music, it was a bit much for me on my first visit. I calibrated my expectations on my second visit, so it didn't bother me as much, but I do prefer a more serene (and private!) atmosphere. Overall, though, I wouldn't hesitate to go back here. Your Review I am MOM OF 3 ADVANCED ORTHODONTICS clients, all whom have completed their journey with Dr. Larabee and his staff. Our AO experiences have been nothing short of perfect, just like my kids' teeth. We had a very scary and devistating cheerleading injury to my oldest where 4 of her front teeth were knocked out of place. She was in so physical pain, but the emotional trauma was even more devastating. Here she was, a beautiful 15 year old with teeth falling out of her mouth. Dr. Larabee not only stabilized and saved her teeth, but gave her back the most beautiful smile you could ever imagine. I don't even know where to start??? This place looks like a spa, people not an ortho office, and I couldn't love it more! The front desk is SO welcoming. Upon arrival I was given a tour and introduced to the staff prior to being seen by Dr. Larrabee. They took initial X-rays & I was even offered my own lip balm! Genius! Next I was taken to the consult room where Dr. Larrabee was super cool and explained the process of Invisalign and what needed to happen to my teeth in order to correct my smile. I can honestly say this is the first time a Orthodontist has explained in detail the process and how it works. ( I had braces 20+yrs ago). After this he removed my bottom retainer while I watched Boss Baby from a Television located on the ceiling! ( okay so maybe only 5 minutes of it but still super cool)! His assistant proceeded to use a fancy wand to X-ray my teeth for the Invisalign trays. Once this was complete I scheduled my follow up & checked out at the front desk only to be offered a fresh baked cookie!!!! I'm getting offered sweets at the ortho...What!?!?! Is there anything this office hasn't thought of? Okay so all of the bells and whistles aside... which mind you I REALLY appreciate... I could not be more thankful to Dr. Larrabee and his friendly staff. I am actually coming to his office to correct what was a horrible experience elsewhere. Dr. Larrabee showed total class when learning of my experience elsewhere and didn't take a cheap shot at my previous orthodontist once although many were warranted. After having braces twice when I was younger and going to 3 different orthodontists about my teeth, Dr. Larrabee was the FIRST to tell me what the root of my problem was and how to fix it. He told me I had an open bite (of which none of the other 3 orthodontists told me or even knew about) and that the only way to fix it was through a "tads system" (not sure if that is the correct spelling) to move my top jaw up. I couldn't even touch my front top teeth to my front bottom teeth. When I bit into food, I had to bite from the side with my back teeth. My teeth were uncomfortable and UGLY before Dr. Larrabee fixed them-- even after having braces twice, since the root of the problem wasn't fixed my teeth kept going back to how they were before. However, even right after I got my braces off the first two times, my teeth just were not nice. They had ridges and little chips on the bottom of each tooth that Dr. L cleaned up and made smooth and perfect. Not only that, but Dr. L does the big, curved pretty smiles unlike the flat smile I had before where my teeth went straight across then boxed back. He also shaved part of my gumline off on my top back teeth to show more of my teeth so my smile would look bigger and more pronounced. The before and after pictures are unreal! I told him to show them to everyone! haha The difference in my smile is like night and day, I've been told that I look like a different person! When I got my braces off, I kept staring at my teeth because they are so perfect they look fake, like I have veneers or dentures! Also, my front right tooth was longer than the left, so he filed it down so everything looked even and symmetrical. What he did to my teeth was artwork. They look amazing! Not only was I thoroughly impressed with his knowledge, his staff are all so incredibly sweet and helpful. I recommended him to a friend of a friend, and she went to two consultations in one day-- first another doctor in the valley, then to him. On her way she was complaining to me about how far his office was (she lives in Scottsdale and he is in East Mesa). I told her that getting your teeth done RIGHT was worth the extra drive-- coming from someone who has just finished up 3 times in braces!! Her first consultation with the other doctor, she said the girls were snooty and rude. When she went in to her consultation at Dr. Larrabee's office, she told me how sweet all of the girls there were, signed, and got her braces the very next day-- the drive obviously did not hold her back from going with the best orthodontist AND the best staff! I am an avid supporter of Dr. Larrabee and his work. I would fully recommend him to anyone anytime. He is just absolutely awesome! read more

I was disappointed with our "consultation". They insisted on doing 3D xrays. We just had xrays done at the dentist and I didn't want the extra radiation for my son. They acted like no parent had ever had such a concern. They had to talk to several people and then said Dr Larabee required the 3D xrays for his consultation. I reluctantly agreed to the 3D xray and they told me to stay in the room while they were going to take my 8yo son. Um red flag. I insisted on going with my son and again they acted like no parent ever had such a concern about strangers wanting to take their child alone to who knows where. The worst part was their technician was so incompetent that they weren't able to download the xrays. My son got the radiation but no xray images. Then Dr. Larabee shows up and acts like he can do a consultation without xrays. This place is a joke. Just look at the extravagant office and know his patients are paying for all of that. read more
