Had dinner last night group of 7 celebrating a birthday. So I scanned the menu decided to have the portabella mushroom stuffed with crabmeat... Sounds good right? So how come on the menu it said nothing about mushrooms sitting in a brown gravy/sauce whatever or "crabmeat" that appeared to be some type of stuffing. Or how about they also forgot to mention covered in cheese!!! What?! No thank you... So the waiter who was very polite realized it said nothing about the cheese on the menu took it away. Very good Portuguese food. Our group of shared a roast suckling pig and Paella Valencia. Two entrees are definitely enough for four people and we still took leftover Paella home - enough for two more lunches. Both entrees were very good. We also started with a tasty collard greens soup and a Salada de Verão. Both were very good and again the salad was enough for two. For dessert we had flan, sorbet and a chocolate tartufa - all good. We arrived at 1:00 pm for lunch when the place was less than half full. Our service was attentive - two servers and third filling our water glasses. Overall, a pleasant experience, although a little pricey - $150 for four with tip, mainly due to $30 for the pitcher of sangria, but it was delicious. read more

I used always go to lunch here and what drove me back to sit at the long crowed bar was the staff. Amazing beautiful Brasilian women who knew how to treat their customers well. Very friendly and attentive. The Sangria seems to always be perfect but JJ seems to make it the best. I have had most of the dishes and always satsified. The only disappointment is the sausage which is a little too dry and salty for my taste. Maybe it's because they burn it too much. But most other dishes I've had was really good. read more

Stopped into this spot before Rolling Stones concert at the Prudential Center and it was excellent. It's a bit old school with the giant 3 lb. menus and jacketed waiters but old school here is fun and their service was great. Go for the shrimp & garlic sauce, Portuguese churrizo and any of the fish offerings. Their sangria was terrific and I hope to return the next time there's a good concert in Newark. read more

First of all the food was great but we had two servers in a span of two hours and the first server was not consistent he took forever getting just a bottle of ketchup and a drink and other things that we asked for that shouldn't take long to get. Let me start by saying my favorite things about this place is the white sangria and the out door seating in the summer... However they ripped me off yesterday, I always get the same thing and because I sat indoors (since out door seating is not available yet) they charged me double what I usually pay. Been here a couple of times for dinner. The three main areas are side by side, bar, restaurant with private room in the back, then the club, which I have never been to and I dont even know when it is open. The dining room has the wine cellar look and though some may not like it, it is done nicely with great stone work. The decorating is a little over the top with ornateness, lots of plush, sofa type seating and a couple of throne chairs. The regular seating is very nice padded arm chairs. You would probably feel more comfortable here with a date than with dinner with the guys before a Devils game. The two times I went there, we ate in the dining room, which both times was basically empty on a week night. There is a recession and it affects restaurants pretty badly. I bring this up because one of my only negatives is that the staff is too attentive to the point of hovering. The guy stood there, two feet away while we perused the menu. I actually felt skeeved by this. Dude, back off and I will let you know when we're ready. After that, we were basically rushed so that the waiter, bus boy and the other guy could go home. This was at nine pm. Anyway, my attitude is too bad, and we took our time. The food both times was very good, not OMG this is amazing. Seafood platter for two the first time and steaks the next. Also fried calamari which was good, and also plentiful. Plenty for two to share. Food was well prepared, sizable and the steaks were cooked to rare as requested though this got raised eyebrows. Whats wrong with rare? I guess I was surprised because I felt the focus was more on the club and bar and not the food. As with all reviews, we rate on what we ate so who knows, but we left satisfied. There are better restaurants in the Ironbound but this rates a visit for the bar or the restaurant based on the above parameters. Good date restaurant. Good for Valentines Day. Both times, as we left, I noticed that the bar area was full and vibrant. Maybe we were just visiting the wrong area. Beautifull place, it has many many attributes that are worth experiencing. Its appearance is very romantic and gorgeous decoration and good atmosphere but I did not like the food. The appetizer was a dish of clams and shrimp with no flavor. I ordered a $30 steak and it was all fat and again flavorless, I told the waiter and he compleatly ignored me and packed it to go. Pranced into this place at 10:30pm knowing the kitchen closes at 11pm expecting mediocre service but I was taking by surprise by the fantastic service that was provided. The gentlemen serving were very quick and efficient. The sangria was perfect. We ordered the skewers for 2 people and 5 people could have easily eaten from there. My coworker brought us to this place for lunch. He said this place is going to be great. We walked into the bar section which you barely can walk by. I was leading the way and I kept on walking down the bar expecting an opening to the dining area. Then I noticed. O, that's why he brought us here. I see now. Found this place a year ago on a biz trip, and my meal was so memorable that I sought it out again a year later on another trip. It was equally spectacular. I swear you can taste the love of food and culture with each bite. The staff are courteous, accommodating, and helped us find the right selections in both food and wine. The steamed clams in garlic and cilantro are the best clams I've had anywhere, ever. If the suckling pig is on the specials menu, get it! Cozy, romantic, rustic but elegant atmosphere. Maybe because of my appearance it was a rainy night and I threw a hat on.. I walked in the restaurant was practically empty and he says can I help you with something.. So I tell him I need a table for two and he hesitates.. He finally sets me up at a table with menus.. I ask him for a wine list and he grabs it and brings it to the table.. I was there on a Wednesday and the website says that there is 1/2 price "special" wine bottles on Wednesday.. He said that's an error there is no such thing and takes the list.. No apology, nothing.. I felt like that was false advertisement.. He did nothing to even try to attempt to make it right.. Not even an apology.. Most restaurants honor mistakes for their customers.. Anyway.. We order drinks.. And I end up paying $9 a glass for wine.. He comes takes our food orders and he never came back to check on us but he checked on the gentleman sitting 2 tables away from us often.. Walked right by us several times and never said a word.. We had to grab someone else to refresh our drinks.. Wish there were more stars! Found this gem on Yelp and loved the menu. Free validated parking at 98 Madison. Warmly greeted upon arrival for our 7 pm reservation and offered two prime tables. We chose right across from the beautiful fire, very welcome on this icy cold nite. Wait staff was right there at all times. Began with shrimp in garlic sauce and chorizo flambé table side. Hubby, me, daughter, son-in-law shared all. Great start! Let me say my husband and I have been venturing into Ironbound for 30+ years. Next came the seafood paella and strip steak. Now I had seen a grilled octopus online but not at the restaurant. When I asked about it I was told "of course" they have it- and they did. Can't say which dish was the best - since we loved them all. Steak was a perfect medium rare served with potatoes and vegetables. Octopus were 3 large pieces, with olive oil, garlic, onions and peppers and perfectly done potatoes. The paella? The rice did more than provide a base- so delicious. Lots of clams, mussels, scallops, plus a lobster tail and claw. To finish? One perfect tiramisu shared, plus assorted cappuccinos and espresso. Can't wait to start bring our friends here. I had dinner here because a friend recommended Adega's cosmo martinis and was quite pleasantly surprised to find the cuisine was as good as the bartender's drinks.The service is attentive, the Old World wine selection is fantastic, and the food was cooked to perfection. My review is solely on the night life this place offers. Great music, lounge, lighted dance floor (which is really a walkway) , and of course full bar. Yes it was packed on Sat. night, just completely, ridiculously jammed with more ppl than it is equipped to accommodate. But in the whole scheme of what a night club is expected to look like, Adega surely holds their own. Now, I am not exactly a spring chicken and i just can't get down with such a rowdy venue. I want the ambiance with the club music and spirits but in a more sophisticated way. The youngins do nothing for me. But I will say this, i'll go back. Brick City is my home away from home and running into old familiar faces bring me joy. Wait, maybe that's the effect of the booze. I came here for lunch with my family after a graduation and was very unhappy and unsatisfied. When we entered the restaurant there was no host to seat us. Eventually the main waiter pointed to a table and told us to sit. I understand if they are busy and short staffed but there was 4 other customers in the whole restaurant. The service was extremely bad. The main waiter (older gentleman bald with glasses) was extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. It seemed like he was angry with us when we needed a few more minutes to browse the menu. The food was decent. They got two of our orders wrong and did not understand what we were trying to order. It was impossible to get anyone's attention. Eventually when we were ready to go it was a mission asking for the check. Finally when we got the check we saw the tip had already been included. There was 5 people total. I've never heard of a place that includes tip for a small party as such. Long story short. Terrible service. Decent food. Over priced. read more

Surprise 30th bday dinner on December 2nd was perfect. Called a week prior to reservation for a party of 22, what can I say customer service is key Marco went above and beyond to accommodate our group without any hesitation. The food was amazing everyone enjoyed what they ordered and service was on point. If your looking for great ambiance,good food, and great service this is the place to go. The only reason I gave a 4 star is for parking we were told by the parking attendant that the lot closes at 12 then we would have to move the car to later find out that was untrue. Food was delicious. Came in around 6 pm, first in the restaurant this evening. Service was okay...had to wave waiters down for attention a few times. My boyfriend paid a bill of $84 with $100. We waited over ten minutes for change. When we asked one of the waiters (not ours specifically because many guys brought different parts of our meals out) another guy comes out and said he was sorry because he assumed it was okay. I found that to be very disrespectful because although we were going to leave a $10-15 tip, I thought it should have been our choice and the waiters should not assume, especially when dealing with someone's money. Also, we were never given nor asked if wanted any napkins. Handkerchiefs were a nice color but I would have prefer some napkins. read more

It's not obvious that fountain drinks don't get refills and the servers just say refill instead of admitting you're going to get charged $3 for half a glass of iced tea (the glasses are fairly small). The menu doesn't say the toppings on the sandwiches are all extra either and the servers once again are don't disclose that. The portions are large, which is generally nice, but the wait staff doesn't warn you and lets you over-order. What should have been a $25 dinner, quickly became $35 when I could have gotten by with half the food I ordered. read more

Ambiance is nice and waitstaff is very courteous. Service was excellent. The house wine was great as was the Pinot Noir they offered by the glass. The food, however, was on the bland side. It seems like they forgot the salt on every one of the dishes. We ordered Caldo Gallego - the base was vegetable stock rather than a protein stock, so that might have accounted for the difference, but there were pieces of ham in there...so no pretending it was a vegetarian dish, OK? We also ordered a seafood platter with tomato sauce. Super generous portion, but then again, missing a bit in the spice department. My stuffed gambas were the best thing we had. The shrimp were FAT FAT FAT (yum!) with crab meat. Nice veggies on the side. Could still, have used salt (..and I am very timid when it comes to salting dishes...) This place has very bad customer service. After we were given looks for wanting to share a paella which is a very big dish. The ppl working there kept on walking up and down the hall looking at our table every couple of minutes, which made it very uncomfortable for me and my cousin. Then to make matters worse three of them come up to us after being there for about an hour, and one of them actually asks us if were done. In other words kicking us out. I was so shocked didn't expect that from such a "nice" restaurant. My cousin didn't finish her food since they just made us feel so bad. I will never be going there again. read more

Wow Awesome dinner Saturday night! Service was excellent. My Steak was incredible and my wife had the chillian seabass and she is still talking about it. The sangrai was so good.
