We came here for a wedding a few weeks ago. The place isn't in the best area, but boy is that food delicious. I agree with Lon, it's old school, but their lounge is hip and fun. Great Portuguese inspired Iberian food! We came here one night for a couple of drinks and appetizers and sat outside. We ordered: - Chistorra: It's almost like a stir-fry with Chistorra sausage, a sausage from the Basque region of Spain, mushrooms and shrimp in a salty, brandy gravy. It's more delicious than it sounds, believe me. - Polvo a Feira: Classic Galician octopus. Simple and very good but not the best I've had. Still it's a reliable dish and who wants to prepare octopus at home anyway? Drinks were delicious and strong. It's more of a clubby atmosphere than you would find at the more old-school establishments around here. Definitely planning on going back here for dinner on a quieter night. read more

Excellent Portuguese food! Portions are too big but I won't hole that against them. The Sangria is dead on! It is a great place to go for a romantic dinner for two or a large party. Only issue is I would t recommend the dessert. The flan tastes tinny, cheesecake was stale and ice cream had freezer burn. They give you enough food that you shouldn't want dessert anyway. read more

I went there for Christmas night and ordered a steak with stuffed lobster tail . (This was actually my first time ordering lobster and when it came the lobster was dry and rubbery. this was my first time going here and i was excited since i had heard many good things. i arrived around 8pm on a friday night and i was seated promptly. but honestly that was my first complaint. the restaurant is shaped strangely so their are tables for 2 people located along the wall but tables for larger parties directly next to it. so i'll put it like this. every time someone at the larger party table would leave they would bump into our table. barely room for the servers to walk down the aisle but anyway on to my server, he was nice, not very attentive but nice none the less. we ordered a pitcher of the white wine sangria, delicious. i ordered the jumbo shrimp stuffed with crabmeat, and my friend ordered the salmon stuffed with crabmeat. she enjoyed hers, i did not. the crabmeat tasted really.... i don't even know the right words to describe it. it just left a weird taste in my mouth. i only ate the shrimp portion and the rice and spanish potatoes. the 3 things we ordered totaled over $90 so a little on the pricy side. i honestly don't think i would go back. read more

I see some negative reviews and they might be justified, but my lunch experience here was great. This is my first time going to a Portuguese place in Newark. Service - 5 Unexpectedly, very good service. People were courteous, smiling, very attentive. The food was delivered quickly. Water was refilled often. I guess it helped that we were the only people at the restaurant. Food - 4.5 I read a review about the Tuna being overcooked. I think that it's just how they do it because a person in my company ordered the Tuna and said that it was a bit hard ,but still pretty good. Also, shrimps are kind of hard, unlike in most places, but they tasted pretty good as well. Grouper was very good as well as spinach in the tomato that comes with the dish. The olives that they give as starters are soo good. Portions at this place are huge, which is a plus for someone like me who can eat a lot. Overall the food was tasty and well presented. Atmosphere - 5 The place is well decorated with great spacing and lightening. They have a bar in another room, which looks good. Value - 5 I'm from NYC so the price to me for the amount and quality of food was totally worth it. Most entrees don't go past $20. Definitely a great value from my point of view. read more

I'm going to give this place a three because I did not eat anything at Adega. My work hosted an end of the year celebration here which consisted of an open bar for the staff members and lot of fun music in the side party room. The actual restaurant is adorable inside with these ornate couch seats that would be amazing to share with a date. The side party room is completely different as it's darker, has a giant fish tank on the wall, and the tiles on the floor are lit up in bright colors. Their drink prices are fairly reasonable though maybe a little pricey for Newark. Would I come back? Not sure, seeing as I'm vegetarian and Adega doesn't really appear to have too much to offer. read more

Didnt feel very welcome. Was empty when we walked in which is always a bad sign @7 pm on a Friday night. Beautiful tight restaurant. Rolls were cold, asked for warm bread, was then given back the same rolls that felt like they were micriwaved for 5 sevonds. Ordered 2 appetizers, one was shrimp in this thick chicken broth/gravy with scallops shrimp and topped with supposedly mozzarella cheese, was totally disgusting. Also had crab legs that werent much better. The issue with both appetizers is that they werent remotely fresh, frozen for too long, no seafood taste. Left and went to spanish tavern which wasnt much better. Would possibly try spanish tavern again when fresh seafood is more in season. At least we felt welcomed at spanish tavern. read more

I love love love this place. It is an Ironbound staple. I've held every graduation party (mine NJIT '05, brother USMA '07, and brother USNA '12...yeah, I like to brag) :) here and Marco, the GM, has always been amazing. The food is superb. I have never gone and not had the shrimp in garlic sauce, the sangria is awesome and then it depends if I'm in the mood for steak or fish...neither have ever disappointed. This place was the first one we saw on yelp. We choose because of the reviews. The food was ok, but they don't offer portuguese drinks like Somal, only pineapple juice from cans. Stopped in looking for a nice place to eat. We accidentally walked into their bar first but wanted a sit down dinner. So we walked a door over into the restaurant. We asked the host for a menu and he replied "this is not the bar" in a very condescending manner. As we looked around and looked at the menu it just didnt feel right. I'm literally the ONLY female sitting in this place at 2:30pm on a Wednesday afternoon and not only did I have to interrupt the waitress/bartender so that I could order my drink, but I've been here for exactly 25 min and neither that waitress nor anyone else has asked me if I needed a menu or if I wanted another drink. Their food and sangria is amazing but the service is 1 1/2 out of 5 at most. Only reason why I will even give them any credit is because despite me having to wait one hour for my food the last time I was here (the waitress never put my order in) the manager comped my mean and drinks. I m used to going to Adega to party at the lounge or drink at the bar, but decided to try the food. My fiancée and I tried the dining experience and were impressed by the customer service and the fancy wait staff. However, not pleased at all by the seafood. I had the scallops and my fiancée had a shrimp and pasta plate and we both got sick the next day . We gave the leftovers to the dog and my dog threw up also. 2/12/11 This place has gone from mediocre to awful and deserves MINUS star status. It used to be at least average but no longer. Our last visit...and I do mean our LAST visit... was horrible; the hostess dressed in the latest streetwalker fashion should have been a tip off to leave from the start. We were lied to regarding waiting time. Instead of being honest, they seated us and then waited on everyone who came in after us before taking our order. We waited over two hours for inedible food; the fish and seafood were old and smelly while the manager and waiter swore they were fresh. Can't they smell??? The vegtables were tasteless and/or hard as planks, and we were overcharged on our credit card statement after leaving. ( I just received my statement and saw they added $10 to the amount I signed for!) Do they think the public is too dumb to notice they're being ripped off? I would recommend any place in town over this pathetic excuse for a restaurant that can't cook, serve, or uphold the provider/customer contract in an honest fashion. Sadly, we took relatives from out of state to show them the Ironbound district and treat them to a Portuguese meal; they left with the worst impression of NJ possible. read more

I went to eat here on Saturday July 11 with my BF & BFF :) ... King snow crab leg appetizer was delicious (broiled), Spanish sausage was good but very salty though we left the plate empty. We each ordered our steak which was delicious and big enough to share but took a long time to come out. My friends BF didn't get his red snapper fish he ordered and that is why I can't give this place a full five stars. Sangria pitchers were delicious and I went to the Kevin hart comedy show full & Buzzed. I've been here plenty of times.. from grabbing drinks and dinner at the bar, eating outside in the summer or dining inside in their very beautiful dining room. The service and food here are impeccable. I recommend starting the night with a red sangria and the garlic shrimp. Went to Adega Grill and the first thing you notice is that the decor is straight out of 1998 New Jersey - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. We were given a table near the fire place it was romantic in a old school way. The portions are HUGE but yummy. I had the paella which had seafood in every bite - they do not scrimp. My Husband had the bacalao in a tomato broth which was also delicious. Service was attentive. I definitely recommend. read more

From the time you walk into the beautifully modern traditional furnishings to the VERY polite and attentive staff makes your dining experience complete. I was here for a christening, and had a wide variety of their menu choices. Without exception all 10 of the dishes severed at my table were flawless. All of the fish was fresh and prepared perfectly, the chicken franchese was perfect and the angus sirlion was cooked perfectly (mid rare) Never needing to flag down a waiter or server they were on top of every empty glass and dropped napkin.
