Today was another chance to try a coffee from a new place. Ad Hoc is below street level, so it takes a little hunt to find. Inside it's small & quaint. I ordered a honey latte. As I watched the barista make it, I noted there was very little coffee in my latte & a whole lotta milk. Sure enough, the latte was very weak & tasted more like a cup of warm milk. The honey flavor was also barely discernible. It seems like a couple easy tweaks could elevate Ad Hoc from below ground, to soaring. Just my opinion. read more

We've been coming here pre-pandemic, and they've changed their seating, drink menu, etc. I like that there is more space to walk around, but I do miss the coziness of the old seating. I also miss the rose latte they used to have. The drinks are more stream-lined now and I feel like what I used to go to the village for (unique drinks and a quaint coffee place to catch up) has now turned into someplace I can find close to home in HK. Regardless, AdHoc is still charming and the staff is still just as lovely and I love breaking out of the normal routine to catch up with friends here every now-and-then. It has a small little staircase to come down, so unless you're a local, you'll probably miss it, but local or not, definitely check it out! read more

One fascinating little coffee shop underground in the west village. My main complaint for all underground coffeeshops is the lack of sunlight (something I feel like is essential to the good morning and a cup of coffee), and the ad hoc collective had a surprising amount of sunlight but was no exception. There is a wifi policy of only allowing laptops if you purchase a food item, and when I did, I was upset to find out the wifi did not work. There is a small amount of seating space regardless, so pulling out your laptop may feel a bit cramped. There is no bathroom that I was aware of. The decor was great tho! It felt like I entered a well decorated home and the baristas had amazing taste of music. Vibes were indeed immaculate. Now in terms of the food, the matcha loaf was spectacular. Great taste for a pastry and I kind of crave some more. The cardamom was a bit lacking and the honey did sink to the bottom of my cardamom honey latte but it felt like the taste could definitely been improved on that. Overally, a typical expensive cafe in NYC that does feel cozy and comfortable, but the taste of my latte could have been improved upon, and I felt like it could use some more sunlight. This is a cozy, below ground coffee shop in Greenwich Village. There's no large sign outside so it's easy to miss the stairs to enter. It was pleasantly warm inside. They have about five or six small tables with a mix of floral upholstered and foldable chairs. Several folks were working or reading. They played an unexpectedly varied mix of music. It was initially ambient jazz, but at one point they threw in some Sean Paul. They have a bunch of signature drinks. I tried the Rose Matcha latte and it was delicious. Came recently with my boyfriend to grab coffee and morning hangout. The last time I came was before Covid and this place feels a bit different. The charm is still there however definitely less lively and cozy. They serve cups in to go cups now instead of different variety of cups. Seating is still similar however slightly more spread out. They do have seats outside now tho! Still a cute local spot but definitely lost some charm to it. Hopefully it will recover now that Covid is officially over. Came here after a quick visit to the titanic museum and it was excellent! The cafe itself is kind of small and it was a little bothersome to see like one or two people taking up one of the larger seating options, but that's not the cafe's fault. The food was EXCELLENT. Tasted like I was in a cozy little cottage and got the produce from my garden out back. Made me flashback to childhood almost like the food critic in Ratatouille. Would definitely come back again, but maybe with the intention of not sitting inside and taking my items to go! The lost point is only for the tight space, not the food and drink! read more

This was a truly ad hoc experience where I do not think the server received any training on executing a proper latte, instead I received some sort of cafe au lait that looks nothing like the pictures. On top of that they were cranky even by city standards. read more

5 stars isn't enough. There needs to be more. Ad Hoc is one of my favorite spots in NYC - the perfect west side coffee shop with inventive takes on coffee and the menu of food you always want to see. There really aren't enough positives I can say about this space. Ad Hoc is exactly what home feels like. Each mug is different, an electric combination of furniture and fixtures, a warm space to go to on a cold winter day, or spot you want to meet a friend for a coffee catch-up. The vibe here is one of the biggest selling points. There's no other cafe in the village where I want to go when I need to get some work done but want a change of scenery. The vibe isn't the only selling point: all drinks are delicious. I have yet to have anything I don't like... and doubt that will ever happen. The food is also incredible, and if Keet is around, you can probably have her create something for you. Finally, the best part is the staff. Everyone here is so wonderful - from the baristas to Keet (the owner). It makes Ad Hoc even more special among New York's overly saturated coffee/cafe scene. read more

I'm having dinner in Atlantic City at Chef Michael Symons restaurant. I peep his Instagram account and see he was here and raving about the place. I'm going to be in NYC over the weekend, lemme see what the hub bub is all about. First off, if you're looking for this spot be alert. There's some basement action going on, there's a tiny black plaque that says Coffee Shop. It's a neighborhood thing for sure. Once I step inside, man this is a small spot. I mean, it's so small my pantry can kick it's ass. It's small. However, I see the Ferrari of coffee machines on the counter and that gets a pass. There are many flavored lattes, I'm not sure if I want to step too far out of my comfort zone. I see as a choice a Velvet Cafe Au Late. I ask the barista what is this drink? She explains it's their cold brew made hot again and the result is a silky coffee. Sold! It's early Sunday morning and my wife is in the car. The reason why I stopped, our hotel offered a continental breakfast and she had only a tea. I asked the barista if I could order an egg white and chicken apple sausage on multigrain bread to go. I also see some outrageous looking muffins but no cookies? I asked if they have biscotti, they do I'm told. Now I'm looking at the barista. She has her hair up and she's in some sort of, yoga pants wearing get up. She turns around and starts frying eggs!! In your face stupid Starbucks!? In my eyes she's a coffee superhero to me at this point. I see her take the Chicken- Apple sausage out of a packet and that biscotti?? Was a Costco Nonnas biscotti. However! All these millennials love avocado on Toast and there was dishes coming out with topped with a single egg that I could be down with for breakfast. In the end, the coffee was good and I'm the husband of the year for getting my wife a breakfast she'd enjoy. And there's the power of social media for you! I found this place by accident after discovering a nearby Starbucks was permanently closed (so rude). The decor is adorable, with just the right amount of seating scattered throughout. It's a bit on the pricey side, but this is the West Village and it is good quality coffee. I shall return. read more

They had some laptop policy around spending too much time at the table for more than an hour, but I didn't see it being enforced. I was on a virtual meeting at that point but luckily the meeting ended early so I left immediately after. I've had this placed bookmarked for a while now and I finally made it in on a rainy night. If you've been eyeing this place, don't wait til a rainy day. Go now! I enjoyed the beet root latte with a shot of espresso which was good! Next time I'd like to try the beet root tea just as tea and not a latte. It is made from powder so think of like matcha powder, you can have it with water or with steamed milk and then add espresso as you wish. You got options! Other items I was eyeing on the menu were the different oat milk lattes and also the Reese Pieces Mocha. Mmmmm sounds good for next time! Also, if it weren't for those fancy drinks, I would've ordered a cup of black coffee to try the roast on its own being that it is wood roasted! Dope. My husband enjoyed a honey lavender latte and killed it so it must've been good. Pastries caught my eye but my belly was too full to try. Again next time. So I started looking for somewhere with a beet/turmeric latte or something, and this place came up- and came through. Holy hell this place has more "alternative" coffees than anywhere I have ever been. Kayla got the Reece's Pieces and it was *stellar*. I got the cold brew and it was also worth going back for. If you like fancy drinks but don't like caffeine, this is literally the place for you. A few more small things- no almond milk for environmental reasons (but they have regular milk...? take that as you will) yet they offer milkademia for the same price. Dope. If I could nitpick anything about the spot, someone doing a little bit of picking up of some junk laying around would go a long way towards making the small spot truly impressive. read more
