Beautifully curated and visually stunning shop that immediately starts to rot and turn moldy as soon as you encounter the infamous (as stated in other reviews) French woman with a permanent frown and lack of any light or joy. The way in which she followed around my husband and I was absolutely comedic. A spacious and open store with us and one other shopper, and a mere 4 feet of space between the French woman and us. Staring us as we delighted in the first few minutes of discovering items in the store. After about 10 minutes it was still ongoing. She was on our balls the whole time. What a strange and weird woman, I thought. I turned to her, because she was right there anyway, and said "It's not like we're going to steal anything." Mind you, we were dressed nicely, and very respectful of the items, and even purchased something. It was my husband's birthday and I wanted him to have anything he wanted. After I confronted her bizarre behavior, she looked aghast and said she was just there to "help." Please. She was there scrutinizing our every move under the guise of trying to be helpful. She walked away, came back, and told me, "what a weird thing to say." No ma'am. You're the weird one for following us closely with very little space for our entire shopping experience. Like, are you having a bad day or is this just your personality? Anyways, we purchased our item and I smiled and said thank you and she gave me a stink face as I walked away. Funnily enough we were laughing about it later on with another local shop owner and he IMMEDIATELY knew which store and woman we were talking about. His service was exceptional but yeah, this is an ongoing theme at Clic! As soon as I red the other reviews later on I felt SO. VALIDATED. Will be keeping this erratic woman in my thoughts and hopes she is well and finds joy in life and is able to heal from the shackles of racism. read more

I live near the Tribeca location of Clic and go there all the time, and I used to work at Maman on Centre St next to this Clic location but never popped in until today! Prices are definitely on the higher end, but the selection of goods is super well curated and unlike anything you'd find anywhere else. I picked up a cute little book. No clothing at this location though. The lady who works here is also really nice. read more

Was so happy to stumble across this location in soho last week after discovering the store in tribeca a few months back. But there is literally no way I will step foot back in this location ever again. The French woman who was working was so rude and actively watched me looking through books as if I was going to steal or damage them. I have never been so uncomfortable shopping before. Gorgeous little store in little Italy. Filled with such lovely and inspirational objects to decorate your home or give out as gifts. The items are all curated exquisitely. And some are whimsical but wonderful! Like the $1000 sheep. Or the soft flat teddy bears! So cute! The pictures and art work is gorgeous. Also the $200 each beautiful pink and luster velvet pillows. I wanted all of them! Engraved wooden mirrors, delicate dishes, books... this place is a desperate housewives play store. But I thought how lovely it would be to buy a gift for a girl friend from this spot.. anything you choose would probably be cherished. Definitely check it out read more

This was an accidental find. Was stopped dead on the Broome Street sidewalk by the pictures from the Bande à Part exhibit that I could see through the storefront. Walked in, curious, and spent an enjoyable half-hour looking at unexpectedly fabulous pictures of the New York Underground scene. Gallery owner graciously allowed me to take pictures of the space, too, which is uncommon, in my experience. If every show they put on is as content-rich as this one was, this place might justify a visit to SoHo every time I'm in Manhattan. I plan on going back just to check, next time. read more

This is a gorgeous little Soho gallery-bookshop, a separate store to the 424 Broome Street location which is just around the corner. I could simply spend hours just flicking through the beautiful array of art books at the back of the store which are wonderfully curated in the corner space and throughout the entrance-gallery area. Every exhibition I have seen there so far has featured excellent artists with an impressive portfolio of work. I came here yesterday to seek out photographer Magda Biernat's latest work which was stunning (the Broome Street location previously hosted another exhibition of hers). http://www.clicgallery.com/artists/biernat/index.htm I was also delighted to see James and Karla Murray's Storefront Images on display- a book I recently purchased at the St. Mark's Bookshop, fantastic to see large format prints. Staff were friendly and very helpful. In particular a nice (I'm guessing German) gentleman talked to me for a while about Biernat's work and showed me some of his favourite pieces from her book which was also on display. It's a pleasure coming back here every time- I highly recommend it. read more

Firstly, I do have to say that this place has really beautiful prints, art books and various odds and ends for your home. Unfortunately, one or two of the sales people that work here are so unfriendly that I am constantly reminded why I never buy anything. Today I was walking around the store with a friend who picked up a sheep toy animal made of boiled wool. Upon setting it down, the toy gently tipped over. This was not a delicate item but merely a stuffed animal. The French woman (who I presume is the owner) proceeded to wildly roll her eyes and exhale extremely loudly and did this about 3 separate time while we re positioned the toy. After my friend profusely apologized (unnecessarily I may add, this was not some sort of relic or fabergé egg) the woman was so rude and cold that there was no chance we would be sticking around. What an unprofessional and foolish way to treat your customers. read more

This is a really wonderful art/photo gallery and bookshop, owned by Christiane Celle of Calypso St. Barth fame. I saw a few pieces from their current exhibition, Jody Morlock's Dig, from the windows as I walked by and I knew I had to go in! The store is gorgeous and I love the way it's curated. The owner/woman who is usually working there is MASSIVELY rude. Find out who makes anything you like there and order it elsewhere. We ended up doing that with some art that we really liked. We ordered it directly from the photographer. I've shopped there on several occasions and she's always very rude. She treats every customer like they have arrived unannounced to her own apartment. Frankly, people like this really shouldn't be in this business. Or at least, stay out of the store/floor and hire professional sales people to run the retail day to day. read more

It looks like a gallery, with art and books in it! I like art and books, so that's all good. But it's the basic setup - white walls, brightly lit, big picture windows. There a small room to the side devoted just to exhibitions, and a larger room that also features art, and a selection of art-related books. The focus is mostly on art photography. I really wasn't that impressed by the quality of the work in the exhibition we went to see... but exhibitions change, and I'd certainly go back to check out another opening. Hopefully next time I'll get there before all of the refreshments run out, too! read more

There are some cool prints in here, but the French saleswoman is so rude, there's no reason to give the store business. With so many galleries in New York, and none of the pieces really being one-of-a-kind in the store, spend your $5,000 somewhere else, not in this place. read more

I went to see Antoine Verglas' show in Aug 09. Great small gallery collection of other photographers were showing there as well and I was really impressed that the curator knew so much of the technical details and stylistic approaches of the artists. Small but wonderful hard-to-find book selection. I definitely came out of there inspired! read more

I have to agree with Madge S. I have never had such an uncomfortable and terrible experience in a bookstore. Although this place carries nothing special, the location is convenient. I walked in the bookstore as I was strolling around in SoHo in a weekend, and found some interesting, but not unusual photo books in the store. But again, those books could be found in any bookstores in the city that have a photography book section. I was looking through the books on the central table for about 10 mins. The saleswoman started to say to me loudly -"wow, you are all over the places, and looking through all the books." with French accent. I said back to her - "Yes, is that a problem?" She probably didn't expect my response, and reluctantly said no. Then she started to complain that she could find the book she was looking for. The sales man was trying to sell some prints to a couple. They were talking about something flourish for a long wall, come on, photograph is not wall paper. What a terrible place both to the customer and the artists whose works are on the wall of Clic. Definitely not recommend and never will go back there. read more

I have never felt so uncomfortable or unwelcome in a bookshop. I stumbled upon this shop a month or so ago and was excited to find a large table of books marked down to $20 in the back room. I leisurely began browsing and flipping through the books, planning to buy at least one, if not 2 or 3 new art books. The shop was pretty much dead, and after about 5mins of flipping through books, I noticed a staunch older (French?) woman (either the owner or a sales woman) glaring at me from across the store. I thought this was a bit bizarre and unfriendly, but I was really determined t to take advantage of the sale, so I smiled and continued shopping. I looked up again a few minutes later and she was still observing me. I swear, It wasn't like I was doing anything weird to the books, I was simply browsing through them delicately. At this point she walked over and said- "Maybe you need help finding something". This was not a question. It was a cold suggestion. Again, I smiled (or tried to anyway) and said, "no, I'm just looking, thanks". At this point, she starts re-aligning every single book that I'd touched on the table. Mind you, this was a small table, so as she worked her way around it, she was finally standing right next to me, straightening and re-positioning the books as I moved. (Have you ever gone into a really pretentious, high-end clothing store where all the hangers are exactly 1/4 of an inch apart, and a sales person follows behind you to re-position them should you disturb the spacing?... Well, it was kind of like that) Anyway, while I had really hoped to walk away with a few new books that day, this woman's attitude and unwelcoming demeanor drove me straight out of the store. I was so confused and offended, I walked right out without looking back or saying a word to her. I really can't explain what happened and I hesitate to mention this, but I am black. I rarely ascribe other's actions to racist beliefs, but being that she was an older white woman and I am a young black woman, the question did enter into my mind. Who knows what the case was. I only know that I felt very unwelcome. Suddenly my review has turned into a novel... In a nutshell: The physical space of this shop certainly has its charms, but the staff and atmosphere is the complete antithesis of such! read more
