I've known about John Derian for years, but only recently visited the shop in east village. I came by during the sale when one side of the shop was 50% off. This included a lot of Christmas and holiday decor plus some John Derian collection. I picked up a few nice Christmas ornaments (and got an extra 10% off). Perfect store to find a unique gift or decor. They have 3 stores side by side which is nice. This includes their gift shop, home goods, and holiday shop. I love visiting during the holiday season because their ornament display is incredible! So many beautiful and unique ornaments. It's also a fun place to go and window shop because you'll see things that you won't anywhere else. Things are on the pricier side but everything is unique, and excellent quality. There are three John Derian shops in a row, mostly with similar themes. My first review was concerning their famous Christmas ornament extravaganza, which was fun, but overrated. The ornaments were overpriced and the store was overcrowded. I saw the store mentioned in another New York guide and decided to give it another try. This time was a lot more fun. No crowds. No one huddled around miniature Christmas trees. Things here are pretty expensive. Not out of the realm of the middle class or upper middle class, but this is no affordable vintage thrift store. That being said, there are some very fun things here for people wishing to build a whimsical home. Fun glassware, tableware, lamps, tramp art. Furniture, but let's be honest, you can find the same slub velvet pieces in thrift stores for much less. This was a cool place to enjoy design and how to arrange store displays. Kookie things like stuffed animals. Colorful textiles. A big mix of inventory, from older looking stuff to more modern. Maybe a bit of an old country English vibe. Employees were nice, though a little reserved. Which I honestly appreciate when employees aren't pushy, but let you know they are available. A fun place to peruse, buying or not, and very instagrammable. read more

I cannot express how much I ADORE John Derian, I think I've been getting holiday ornaments here for almost ten years. I've also collected other odds and ends over the years, and even if you're not going in looking for anything specific, it's so worth it just to see their beautiful wares! I love going to John Derian for inspiration and eye candy. I have bought some small vintage items in the past that I love and bottle brush trees in beautiful colors. My mother and I were so excited to visit the three John Derian stores on our recent visit to NYC! John has an amazing eye and is an incredibly talented artist. Hands down his decoupage is the best and the store is filled with so many wonderful pieces you need to allow a lot of time to peruse all of the merchandise. I love that his line has been extended to include books, votives, lamps, notebooks, and more. His shops also carry a curated selection of merchandise produced by other artists including linens, ceramics, and furniture, not to mention an assortment of whimsical items. In addition, he has an incredible selection of furniture and antiques. John's decoupaged plates, paperweights, trays, coasters and other decorative items for the home will always be my favorites as they feature flowers, birds and other designs and prints. My husband and I stopped in John Derian while in New York for the Thanksgiving holiday. The shop is always a joy to visit but is extra special at the holidays. The variety and quantity of Christmas ornaments available is outstanding. I work in retail so have the benefit of seeing thousands of ornaments and even so their selection is impressive. I especially loved the display of vintage tree toppers. The service was excellent and they made sure to pack up our selections very carefully and even offered to ship them home for us. I was so pleasantly surprised to stumble upon this store a few days ago. The store already had their Christmas ornaments out and, my goodness, they are beautiful! I love how unique some of their holiday decor is. I was able to find a really special ornament that I plan to gift later this year. John Derian has a gorgeous store filled with unique items that make for great gifts or treats for yourself. This store is full of treasures. The one star rating is for their customer service. I had purchased two Astier de Villate mugs on March 2020. Literally a day before the shutdown began in NYC. I've used both mugs once. They have been maintained in pristine conditions. Unfortunately one of the mugs developed a spontaneous crack that has travelled through the porcelain. I noticed this and sought to have the mug exchanged. The sales associate explained to me that they would be unable to exchange the mug. He further told me patrons do not realize they knick a mug therefore creating the damage themselves. I politely explained to the associate that I did not damage the mug and was certainly put off that he insinuated I was lying. I verbalized my displeasure and informed him I would no longer be a patron at the store. These mugs are extremely expensive - $132 each. Buyer beware!!!! read more

I have been a John Derian fan and customer for several years, having found a beautiful piece of decoupage in a nearby shop in Southern California. Researching them online, I found that their website was very informative, full of lovely and useful items, and have ordered some treasures over the years. Fast forward, I'm obsessed with all things John Derian, artistry that makes me smile. I was fortunate to have visited them at the shops in NYC a few weeks ago, when we were on vacation. I had an amazing time!! They were so friendly and welcoming; I stayed about 2 hours and found some treasures to bring home to my family. What's not to like? If you're into older style (17th and 18th century) then you will be tempted to buy the entire store. I visited this store along with the dry goods store a few doors down the block multiple times during my time in NYC. The staff are quiet yet friendly and are willing to help you if you have any questions/concerns. I especially fell in love with their collection of tableware and mugs. If I had more shopping funds, I would be covering my dining room with the items found in this store. Transport me back to a time when we were technology free and used pencils and paper for correspondence. We were enjoying a midday walk in the neighborhood when we pass one of our favorite home decor shops, John Derian, having a sale (a whole whopping 10% off, but thanks for trying to throw us a bone). We peruse the sidewalk options (are generally pleased) and decide to take it indoors. Oh how disappointed we would be. As soon as my hand grasps the door, I make eye contact with an older woman, whose disposition absolutely rattled me to the bone, making me second guess if this is even worth it. Alas, we're in too deep now, so we open the door. The woman timidly looks at us and we feel her discomfort as she says "we're kind of at capacity." I would've dropped it at this, because respectable, however, she quickly slips in an "and...those can't be brought in here" as she scrunches her ratty little face up at to our iced beverages specifically bought for an enjoyable walk. We have entered this same establishment many a time with many a fun beverage with no qualms. Her foul aura has permanently left a dark cloud over John Derian. No longer a neighborhood favorite. read more

Walking in here today for the first time, after a perfectly serendipitous, purposeless trip down East 2nd street, it was like entering some incredible creative geniuses' brain. Seeing the curation choices, the artful and genuinely inspired merchandising, the real, honest-to-god whimsy and yet entirely serious tone of all of his pieces, you realize, this man is a genius. I really never knew just how well good taste, artistic sensibility and impeccable design could come together in a store like this that sells not-exactly-essential essential home items, but it all does here. John speaks to every customer, drawing them out and involving them in his creative process, and really bringing the pieces alive even more fully, as you understand there was and is a real hand and a passionate heart behind it all. Paradise for Francophile (oui, c'est moi) The store is acutally divided into 3 parts _ Original, Furniture, Dried Goods. But all three division shares a common theme - rustic and french. Everything in the store is very well curated and embodies the essences of a boutique. I came here for Cire Trudon Candles - they are one of the very few stockist in NYC. (best and oldest French "bougie" candles, ever!) Besides candles, they have a great collection of everything from antique, home decors and stationary. read more

I've followed John Derian for years, and was so pleased to see that his three stores were in the neighborhood of our Air B&B in the East Village. I could have spent hours appreciating the beautiful displays and super-curated items he and his people collect and create, but I got there at 4:00 - one hour before closing, and had to satisfy myself with a "condensed" experience. Even their fresh flower arrangements were Pinterest-worthy! Only wish I had the budget to purchase a few of the decoupage bowls/plates, antiques, books, textiles, etc., etc., etc. I did buy a couple of postcards, some vintage shell discs and a couple of tintype children's portraits for my own creative pursuits, so I felt like I won the lottery. They even gave me a fabric tote printed with a vintage whale image to carry my little treasures home! read more

I visited today and was not disappointed. I went only for the Robert Ogden lamps. The staff was very knowledgeable & friendly. I purchased an unusual (usual for Ogden) table lamp evocative of the past. It was pricey but not more than others would charge for such artistry! I'm definitely hooked...I'll visit again! Oh, I do like this shop! It's one of those that I wish I hadn't discovered, though, because I want about 50% of the items in the store and can't even afford 50% of their price. I'm actually not a huge fan of John Derian merch - I don't love little knick-knacks with flowery script and Victorian photos, etc. It all looks exactly the same to me and it's just not my style. But about half this shop is dedicated to an incredibly talented and hard-to-find pottery firm out of Paris, Astier de Villatte. I absolutely LOVE their unique, beautiful (and, ahem, useful) stuff. I've been in their shop in Paris and I think this John Derian shop stocks just about all of their items! The space is unassuming from the street and kind of cluttered inside - but it's just the kind of unique shop you'll be happy to stumble upon and spend about an hour working your way through. He's got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty... whozits and whatzits galore You want thingamabobs? He's got twenty! John Derian is a New York version of the Little Mermaid's cove - when you step in the door you are definitely part of his world. Floor-to-ceiling, this place is stuffed with the kind of special quirky, rustic items that I hope to slowly collect for my own home when I'm older. If you're like me and you can't afford ANY of the stuff in the front, head to the back where you can at least buy a candle paperweight, or great coffee table book. It's worth popping in just to see the amazing collection of goods and, if you're looking for a completely unique and wonderful gift, this would be a great place to look. read more

John Derian is probably best known for his decoupage -- collages of paper images such as botanical prints to newspapers clippings, cut from various sources, that he preserves under glass or lamination on plates, lamps and other things. They're sold without much fanfare at various places around the city and the world -- Barneys, Saks, Paul Smith, and Apartment 48, for starters. Here, at his eponymous shop, they have pride of place, along with furniture, quilts, seashells, Moroccan poufs, and stationery, presumably completing the designer's tableau of how his decoupage should be complemented in situ. Aspiring home pornographers take note. If you and your bank account aspire to live among Hamptons eccentricity, John Derian should be high on your itinerary. For the modern, clean-lined set, a few accent pieces from this palette will warm your cold, less-is-more harts. Check here, too, when shopping for the person who has everything. April 14th: Husband orders chair Early May: Our material is delivered to John Derian Late June: I call to find out status, told it will be delivered in early July Late July: Chair not delivered yet, call to find out what is going on. John Derian associate says she will look into it and get back to me, but she never does. Second week of August: Delivery company calls out of the blue and tells us they are going to deliver on 8/21. No choice, no options. August 17: Delivery company calls the wrong number and leaves a message telling us they are going to deliver on Monday 8/20 instead of 8/21. Again no options and since we didn't hear the message until after work hours on Friday, we can't even call to find out the new details. And this of course is on top of the fact they have unilaterally changed the delivery date without any concern as to whether or not someone can even be at home for the delivery. August 20: When I call to find out what the delivery window will be so I can rearrange my work day, the person who answers the phone tells me he just got in (30 minutes after their opening) and he was gone all last week and I would have to call back later when the woman who left the message will be in. When I tell him I don't have 30 minutes to wait, that I need to make arrangements for the delivery, he seems incapable of understanding that he could actually look up my order and find out when it is going to be delivered. When he does finally ask me my name so he can look the order up he calls the driver to find out the delivery window and tells me that they are going to have to call me back. When I suggest that they probably have the wrong phone number because despite me giving his company the correct number twice the week before, they still left the message at the wrong number. And sure enough he quotes me back the wrong phone number. Assuming the chair actually does get delivered today, that would 18 weeks from order to delivery for one, smallish upholstered chair. I've ordered customized BMWs from Germany that took half that time. read more

I have been meaning to check out the John Derian boutique for years now, especially after reading about fashionable socialites shopping there in Vogue. When the WSJ spoke of Hugo Guinness (yes, that Guinness) designing prints exclusively for the store recently, I finally decided it was the time to make the trek downtown. The boutique was rather unassuming, to the point that I almost walked past it. I have to admit, I was not impressed whatsoever. The store was small (like a Starbuck's bathroom), the merchandise was haphazardly placed (it was like shopping in someone's garage), and it was overpriced ($785 for a whisk!?!). I couldn't believe all of the hoopla is over . . . this? I was beyond disappointed. I'll end my review with a rather funny story. So, my sister received a truckload of gifts from a friend for her birthday. When she said she wanted to give me a few of her gifts because her condo was becoming too cluttered, I was delighted. She then began pulling out drab house ware items from her stash of gifts: a paperweight with a heart that looked as if it was drawn by a 10-year old and various trays that were all the same muted brown shade. I looked at the labels - they were all John Derian pieces! I felt I was being unappreciative; I was just given several hundred dollars worth of merchandise, after all. I decided it would be a waste to throw out these items, but I just couldn't stomach having them in my house, so I decided to move them into my office at work. Now I'm surrounded by John Derian merchandise on a daily basis. Oh, the irony! read more

My family and I recently made a trip to New York and stopped in John Derian per my mom's suggestion. And let me just say, EXCELLENT suggestion. John keeps a fantastic collection of recent acquisitions and carefully selected stock. From handmade candleholders wrapped in colorful paper to antique "police inspector" child's pins to Julie Arkell pieces (love her), the store is full to the brim with colors and textures galore. A girlfriend had given me a glass tray from John Derian for my birthday, and last week she brought me to the shop after brunch. The store has a lot of stuff, packed floor to ceiling with things that looked misplaced. The store seemed about 800 square feet, very dark, and about the size of a small Starbucks. I bought a $9. greeting card and the cashier never said hello, spoke or said goodbye during the transaction. Strange experience, I'll continue to shop at Anthropologie. Bye for now John. read more
