Anyone who shops in most retail stores in Manhattan, let alone on 8th Street by New York University, should be prepared to pay top dollar, especially for the exceptional selection of pens, journals, notepads, greeting cards ( that are significantly more creative than what you'd get in your local stationary shop) and some lovely gifts that writers would appreciate! I walked in recently to shop for a gift for one of my literary friends and i loved the selection of fancy pens as well as less expensive ones. What a gorgeous store. I needed some stationary for a letter I wanted to write and decided to stop in at this Goods for the Study location. It's a beautiful store - high ceilings, beautiful tall windows in the front - and quite large. And filled with paper, journals, pens, pencils, and more. Sure, there are better places if you're looking for something specialized, like Japanese stationery / wedding-style paper / letterpress, but Goods for the Study is the place to go if you want to browse for your next favorite everyday pen or card. It has an awesome collection of cards, elegant and funny and everything in-between, a wall of pens to try, and a respectable array of notebooks. Their items may seem expensive if you don't frequent stationery stores, but I found the prices to be pretty reasonable ($4-$5.50 per card) considering what other independent stationery stores charge. They also have discounts when buying items in bulk (10+ cards), which you know I'm 100% here for. Pricing is a different story for notebooks and pens--the prices can vary quite a bit from what you can find online. I'd suggest coming here to find what you like, then compare prices. There are some things that end up being cheaper at Goods for the Study when you factor in the cost of international shipping, but there are some items you can find for a much better price elsewhere. read more

Not only is this store artificially expensive, their staff is disgracefully uninformed and otherwise bored with customers. I wanted to purchase a high-end leather notebook for my grand-nephew in Japan. The staff had no idea what the international standard of A5 for such items even meant --- a basic information point for any such store. The staff had not even heard of either Aspinall of London or of Graphic Image here in the States, internationally leading producers of such items. Whenever I have previously visited a leading stationery store here or abroad, this is routine basic information which all trained staff has known. Moreover, the staff was sullen and close to rude. They grudgingly showed me the few substandard items they stocked and yawned while doing so. I have patronized major stationery stores in many countries, and this was the most uninformed I have ever encountered --- and I am 82 years old. read more

You know what I love about this place? The people and the music. I felt like I was in my own "home office". No pressure...just love. I'm a fan of their bookstore on Spring street, and the owner is an EXPERT curator. but, you'll have to check that out on your own. Why can't pens and paper be expertly curated? Well, apparently they can, because here it is. You might think this is "boring", but every little station draws you in. (no pun) But they let you test the basic pens on some writing paper. Kind of like a doodle placemat for adults. I love that! Cards, paper, interesting staplers.... whatever you don't think you need....you might find a reinvigorated affinity for here. The music was simply the finishing touch. I've been in soooo many places where, as a middle-aged adult, the music is just a turn off. Truly the best place for someone who loves quality stationary. If you have specifications on journal binding, paper quality, line spacing, pen quality, this place was created and organized just for you. There are various types of journal brands - my favorite is the Note to Self journal - it has the perfect compact line spacing and book binding that lays flat, with gold pages on the sides. The pens are organized by tip type, and most are sold a la carte (vs in a set), and you can try them out on a large piece of paper - it does come out to be more expensive buying them one by one, but it works if you just want to try a few different kinds. read more

I sometimes avoid walking into this store because it's hard to resist buying something every time! I love their card collection. There's something for every occasion, usually with a lot of options. They also rotate in new cards quite often. I'm kind of sad it's closed right now because I really want one of their notebooks, another collection that's really well curated. This is one of my favorite stores in New York City. Or at least it was until today. I find it unacceptable that the boy I nanny for was denied using their restroom today. I nanny for twin boys aged 3.5 who are actively potty training. While in the store today, standing right next to the vacant bathroom, one of the boys said they needed to go. The sales associates danced sound saying no (never directly said no but recommend the closed library 3 blocks away). Anyone who has ever been around kids knows that this is ridiculous treatment. To me, this is unacceptable for a company that wants my repeat business. read more

I thought I knew a lot about notebooks...No, these people know a lot about notebooks and stationary. Brands you've never heard of can't find on Amazon, at actually great prices! Pens are a little expensive but again it's stuff you can't easily get even online. The pen selection could be better, it's very art/caligraphy oriented. One downside is a lot of their stuff is out and I had to compare a few of the same model to find the least "worn" one since they were all unwrapped. But this is not all of their selection. 8/10! read more

On my way back to work, I decided to stop in to look for holiday presents. The store is aesthetically pleasing and filled with glorious paper products, writing equipment, and whimsical office supplies.  The atmosphere had a clean minimalist feeling. However, while I was browsing the shop and trying to get someone's attention for assistance for help was impossible. I was looking forward to going here during our trip to New York since they are the few retailers that carry Rollbahn. The store was nice and they had a good assortment of pens, pencils and paper products. The downside was the people that work there. It's almost as you're bothering them by shopping at their store. I asked one of the employees on the floor if there were refills available for a couple of the pens I wanted to purchase, but after some attitude I told them never mind. I ended up with only a few things (Rollbahn) notebooks till I can order some, because my family and I didn't want to stay there any longer. I also agree with the reviews about the cashiers. They are consistently unhelpful and rude. This is a stationary store, but what's with the air of arrogance and hipsterdom? Like wow, I'm sorry I came into the store and am trying to buy something, and also for bothering you with my presence. Am I good enough? Do I deserve this fancy pencil? A girl who was supposed to gift wrap half heartedly tried taking the barcode sticker off of multiple items and made it messy. Okay, it happens, those are hard to get it off. This place has a great selection and I love geeking out over paper products. I fondled planners and blank notebooks from Japan and Germany and settled on a two-volume EdIt planner from Japan, a product I had never seen before. I was thrilled to make such an important decision for the new year. Then I checked out. The women who was so nicely dressed seemed ready to strike me. They have a variety of great quality stationary that just makes you want to squeal with glee. The pencil, pen, and fountain pen selection is so fun to browse through as well! The shop also include variety of creative cards, bags, pencil cases, and the list goes on. My favorite items are the deskware that are more expensive but very elegant and with creative design. Overpriced Japanese and Korean journals and planners in an aesthetically pleasing shop. Offering a range of paperback and leather journals, pens and pencil cases - this is your go-to for our IG worthy shot. Walk in, on the left there's a wall of cards. On the right, journals from Korea and Japan. They're definitely overpriced ranging from $20-$40. You'll also notice two tables set up with stationary items. It's cute. Towards the middle of the store there's a table with the only planners I could find. Everything else in the store was a journal. To the right, you'll find high quality pens for a pretty penny. To the left, a few rows of gift wrapping paper and scissors. In the back of the store, more leather journals, a few leather pencil cases for $25-$50 and more cards. It's heaven for anyone who loves to send mail, sketch, take notes, or just appreciate the old school ways of communicating! The price point is high for many of their items, but you'll also be able to find unique and unusual goods like Japanese post-its in the shape of kitchen tools or fine fountain pens. The service at the cashier was pretty blasé, but it's really more a store for browsing on your own anyway, so I'll overlook the employee's lack of friendliness. read more

Goodness, what an establishment. Truly a marvel that a place of its kind is able to survive and flourish. First off, it deserves all credit for such an enchanting appearance from the outside. Cozy, well lit, contemporary, and full of attractive but approachable products; I was just walking by but knew I was going to have to stop in for a visit. There are a plethora of cards, mostly tongue in cheek, but all very stylish. It's probably a good things I didn't have more time because I would have found at least one card that I would feel I should buy. There is an astounding selection of notebooks and notepads, and even though I don't often write or sketch while out and about I was feeling tempted to get something. It's nice that just a blank book can give you inspiration. What was really so damn cool about this store though was the assortment of pens. It's not too difficult to find high quality stationary, but to have an enthusiastic conversation with an employee about pens and their virtues was really a treat. There are people who dedicate their lives to creating excellent writing instruments, the people at Goods for the Study know which ones they are, and they can give you the story. That is marvelous thing. I ended up spending $10 on a pen, which I'm fairly confident is a first. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Not too unlike finding just the right wand for you. You can go up the income scale pretty far from there as well when you explore the options in the locked glass and wood case, but that certainly wasn't in the cards for me. I hope to come back with a more expendable income and give those a hand at some point though... read more

During my short trip to New York, this was the first stationery shop I visited and it truly blew me away. First off, their wall of pens is so gorgeous and dangerously attractive. It's beautiful organized and labeled, I can't help but stare at its aesthetic. The entire store in general felt extremely neat, clean, and spacious. I loved that it didn't feel claustrophobic or cluttered and made it a lot more comfortable to simply appreciate its unique and quality stationery. Their notebook selection felt infinite. I probably circled around 7 times over the course of 90 minutes and every time I found a new notebook I adored. Personally, I look for bound notebooks with smooth, low contrast lined paper. I found so many of these here at Goods for the Study. Even better, I loved their fabric covered notebooks or large color blocked ones. They had so many innovative notebooks with different colored pages or designs, it would be perfect for artists who want to spice up their sketchbooks. At the back, there's a wall of different Moleskins and Leuchtturm notebooks and I just wanted to cry. Some of the ones featured, I have never seen before. There are some interesting shaped ones and beautiful colored covers. Unfortunately, as good as these would be for studying, they're not that good for the wallet. I understand that these are more pricey because they are high quality, but the prices of some of the notebooks really kept me from purchasing them. Nonetheless I was not only satisfied, but immensely happy just walking around here. I eventually bought a pack of 3 bound notebooks with beautiful, rich colored covers and a cute flower patterned notebook. I look forward to coming again in my next trip to New York! : ) read more
