Stationery stores for practical use as journals, pens, variety of envelope sizes, and daily planners are, sadly, relic in the digital age conquering progress. However, Stevdan Stationers is one of the few old fashion, independently mom and pop owned stores I have happily encountered and surviving in the industry. The facade of this store has the old fashioned manual rolled-up store gates and the interior is very aged with products that appear slow sellers or sitting on the shelf for years unsold. There is a plethora of pens, markers for the arts and crafts enthusiast. I was in dire need of Parker and Cross ballpoint pen refills in medium point. Parker and Cross are long-time renown brand names in the pen industry, but it is becoming more difficult to locate in the 21st century digital age of progress. I can never write in fine point pens. I am a poet, writer and Yelper as pen and paper is the ultimate tool, as camera is the ultimate tool for a photographer, brush is the tool for a painter, and piano is the ultimate tool for a pianist. Price is average as expected. The owner appears very stolid and melancholy without any greeting or pleasantries exchanged upon my entrance. I needed new printed stationery. I knew this place was primo but i guess there are new owners. I was passed off to a younger clerk who had no idea about the process or the quality of paper or anything. It was quite frustrating and I realized this was no longer the place to spend hundreds of dollars on new stationery etc. I will say that they do have a nice not great pen selection. I have to start by saying that Stevdan is where my pen fetish began. I never knew it could be possible to actually enjoy writing more solely based on the comfort of how a writing apparatus felt in your hand. We were walking by this store three days ago and I noticed a "sale" sign in the window. They're moving across the street, hence the sale. Printing - Let me tell you about personal service - something you WILL NOT GET from Staples or any big-brand place. First off, my organization has been using Stevdan for printing oversized posters for quite some time. We're very satisfied with the quality, very fast service, and very fair prices. But then, last night, because I was overtired, I ordered duplicates of several posters. Stevdan easily could have printed all the orders, and fairly demanded that I pay for everything I ordered. But Aziz called me up and alerted me that I may have ordered more than I needed. He took quite a bit of time and trouble to help me untangle MY mess, so I would get ONLY what I needed. This store is near my surgeon's office as I still need to go for check ups every 6 months. There are so few stores left in the city that I can buy unique greeting cards from that the few left really stand out. When I go to the surgeons office I stock up on cards here of all kinds. They have outstanding greeting cards. They are expensive but they are difficult to find anywhere else. The store is well stocked with just about every stationary supply imaginable! read more

They have a good selection of home office items and wrapping supplies but I got overcharged for KN95 masks. I was charged $80 for 50 masks! And the attendant asked me to Venmo instead of pay upfront because he said the mask sales were separate. Yello. In the store the packed merchants are nice. I happened to run into a box of blackwings and one of the japanese package pen thingy that I haven't seen nowhere. Except for Mitsuwa in NJ or Taiyo or bunch of Stores in Flushing. However they overcharge pretty much all their fountain pens behind the counter. Especially those out of manufacturing -- rocket high. I ran into one of their old Parker. They changed more than twice as much it was sold on Amazon. Tbh their storage and display of their fountain pens were real messy. Make you wonder where they got inventory from. If you don't know like an expert in industry AND don't know how to do a mean haggle ~~ don't even bother. read more

Update: The Filofax Belgravia they sold me for $90 is counterfeit, fake and not an authentic Filofax The interior is supposed to be leather as specified by Filofax. This one is clearly synthetic which accounts for the peeling of the interior that began within a month and has worsened over the year to the point that entire sections have peeled off. The markup on certain items is outrageous. Do yourself a favor and walk your ass to the nearest Staples. I love supporting mom and pop stores, but charging me $40 for a paper and envelope set that would cost $16 elsewhere because I didn't know any better (how often do most people by stationery any more?) is ridiculous. What kind of stationary store sells PPE? The kind that rips people off. They have a hand written sign in their window saying they have N95 mask and hand sanitizer. I go in and they are charging $15 for one N95 mask and Lysol for $20 and the same for a small one ounce bottle of Purell. They are price gouging everyone in the neighborhood, while people are dying. They do not care about you or the area, they just want your money. A stationary store is not considered an essential business and they are open to rip you off. I hope they get shut down. read more

They have a lot of supplies here. Though the prices are a bit up there. $6.99 for a planner the size of a check book. I don't think so. I can go to Chinatown and get one for about $3. I like the selection of pens and that they have an actual pad of paper out for your to try them. On the whole, they're a bit more expensive than Staples, but it really is a better selection and a more educated buy. Besides, I'm a teacher, and being able to write "100" with a circle around it in red pen before I buy it...just to see how it feels....really makes me happy :-) read more

This place has a pretty impressive selection of supplies, especially notebooks (Clairefontaine, etc.) but their customer service bites. I bought a Lamy Safari fountain pen ($35), inked it, decided I didn't like it. They said I couldn't return it because no one would want to buy a pen that had been inked, which is nonsense. This little store is jam packed with tons of fun finds and useful things. All the pens and paper needs that you could ever want, and all the supplies needed for any kind of arts and crafts. The staff here is not pushy and very attentive when you do ask for something. For this visit I needed a dry erase marker and was delighted to find a plethora of options. Save yourself the frustration! If you sell art supplies, at least KNOW what you're talking about and don't insult a customer's intelligence! Bought 3 "high end" color pencils there at about $2 each, along with a sharpener -all adding up to about $10 (pretty steep for a fee pencils and single manual wood pencil sharpener). Turns out the pencils suck big-time. I go back and show the 2 guys there how the tip falls right out when attempting to sharpen. These are WAY too expensive for me to waste half of it on one sharpening, I tell them (color pencils are known to last an artist yrs, and I'm just a hobbyist). "Oh, you're using the wrong sharpener." "Ok, why didn't you say something when I bought 3 of them along with the sharpener?" Whatever. I'll bite. "Ok, show me the property sharpener to use." One of them uses a metal one and sharpened it down halfway. "See? It's perfect." I said, "sure, keep going until you actually have a sharp point to the tip." "Oh these are color pencils, you shouldn't go down that far." Really!? Now he's just insulting me. After seeing my expression, he goes further. Tip breaks off. "Hahaha, there's nothing I can do about that" -still laughing. "Um, sure you can. Take it all and give me back my money." Oh course that didn't happen. So folks, if you're even a hobbyist or doing for your child, DO NOT BOTHER GOING HERE! In short, they're a bunch of thieves. Save your money and peace of mind by just walking up to Blick Art Supply 2 blocks away, located on 13 street, just off of University Place. Lesson learned. read more

They have a great selection of good-quality notebooks (I've been buying my Miquelrius books there for awhile) and pens, and feel good about supporting a long-standing local business.
