These are the nicest guys in NYC. It's a mess inside but don't let that fool you, it is a treasure trove for collectors. A great selection of antique stationary, and they will rent it as props for film/photo production.

Pen, journal and stationery are for the writer. Phil, the owner is 'as is' described accurately by previous Yelp reviews for being knowledgeable, experienced, attentive and personable, despite at first impression he appeared unwilling to serve customers. Having a professional background of being employed five years in the stationery and fine paper business of the former Kate's Paperie, I am knowledgeable a thing or two about stationery myself. It has become more and more difficult to obtain pen refills of my favorite Cross and Parker pens and to search for quality journals as I am a writer. I am old school as I prefer holding a hardcover book and a pen in my hand. Phil understood and know exactly what I seek and take heed for pen refill in black ink, medium point and ballpoint format. I truly enamored with ballpoint pens as it does not bleed especially on thin paper and enables to duplicate onto carbon copy forms. Sales receipts are handwritten by Phil himself and price is reasonable under $20 for one package of two refills. They carry Claire Fontaine from France which I have not seen it sold in stationery stores for a long time since my days at Kate's Paperie. I would surely return for journals and notebooks. I was known as the "paper princess" by my former colleagues. I am also searching for 80 lb. cover stock white laid paper which is nearly impossible to find. This business is conveniently located in the vicinity of Grand Central Terminal on 47th Street near the Algerian and Ghanaian consulates. Business card is available for grabs. Note: Do not visit this stationery shop for sharpies. Furthermore, to all the non-paper aficionados it is spelled STATIONERY. stationery (noun) sta·tio·nery | \ stā-sh-ner-ē \ Definition of stationery 1: materials (such as paper, pens, and ink) for writing or typing 2: letter paper usually accompanied with matching envelopes (source: Merriam-Webster)

Just my haul of vintage NOS pencils from Phil's Stationery...

Upon arriving at the address listed on Yelp and their website (which is a multi occupancy office building) - the doors were locked with a nondescript intercom system. I called them to try to figure out how to get in. Nobody picked up, but the message proclaimed that they were 'open and operating but couldn't get to the phone.' I wandered around a bit more and found the REAL entrance, located at 520 8th Avenue. I went to check in at the security desk as required, and was turned away by the security guard because apparently, they are appointment-only. That seems odd for a supposedly 24 hour establishment. I did not see this on the website, nor was it mentioned in their phone message. Long story short, wasted so much time going to this place, trying to get in, trying to get a hold of them, trying to get past security, and with nothing to show for it. Will not be trying this business again.

They have FAR exceeded expectations. They're always on time or early, they have handled all our requests with professionalism and good humor, and the staff is THE NICEST I've dealt with in a while. I have countless examples of them going above and beyond! I can't recommend them any higher.

Except that I am an author, I barely have the words to adequately pen this review. I'm going to do…read moremy best... bear with me and please don't judge if it's too long. I'm telling you now... its a VERY long review. So... my team and I decided that we were going to release my 2nd book before the holiday season began. That meant that the book would be written, edited and submitted to Amazon KDP (and other book selling platforms) all before November so that we could have about 150 copies printed for our live book launch on November 20th. I was planning to do ALL OF THIS, (and party-planning a fancy schmancy book event) simultaneous to running my small NYC based consultancy where we focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging. Oh...small stuff. It's not like we're busy with tons of clients in 2021 trying to get DEI&B right. We've not exactly been just "sittin' around." Well, what do you know. We were NOT ready to go print on before Nov 1st. Oh nooooo. Just to see where the boundaries of our stress level threshold really lay, we LITERALLY called Bestype FIVE DAYS before the book signing event. #Five (5). Read that again. We were biting nails and sweating cartoon sized sweat bullets, but SOMEHOW all 150 of our BEAUTIUFL BOOKS were printed and packaged gorgeously and ready to pick up two days ahead of our book signing event. YAY!!! Right? Oh no... keep reading. And then the unthinkable. On the evening that I picked up the books we realized that we'd SENT THE WRONG MANUSCRIPT to be printed. It was filled with errors and it was a book THAT COULD NOT BE SOLD. Panicked, (and CRAZED) I called Bestype ON THE MORNING BEFORE MY EVENT. Not only did they reprint my books (right manuscript, less quantity, but more than enough) ...they did so ON TIME, had the books packaged and couriered to me and they communicated with me the entire day ...every step of the way. I have never, EVER, EVER seen service like this. And whilst I pray that I never need this kind of manic, "you've got to be OUT of your mind" help again... consider myself BLESSED that I found Bestype. Trust me, I plan to write until I die. I will be coming back to Bestype again, and again and again. Specifically, my TREMENDOUS thanks to John, Tony and Emily. There is a graphic design guy there too (I didn't get this name but I think he is a wizard of some sort). They are a BEYOND professional and experienced and I we were blown away. Tony was a STAR on the reprint... AND keeping me calm (kinda). Thank you John, Tony, Emily and the Wizard Graphic Design guy and your WHOLE TEAM. I'll never forget you how you made my dreams come true. That's dramatic I know, but surely you know who I am now. :-) Warmest, Gigi
