My breakfast burrito came with piping hot crunchy hash, so good I was in a hurry to eat them, for all that crunch, despite occasionally burning the roof of my mouth with these potatoes. The burrito was as piping hot and good though without meat. The French toast we ordered looked great and also was delicious and also tasted freshly made. All absolutely worth coming back to.

My wife and I both ordered the Chandru Special for $17.50. It's a crepe with bacon and eggs inside plus some cheese slices melted on top. There was a side of fresh fruit. The presentation was somewhat lacking as the cheese slices made it look like something you find at your children's birthday party. The dish definitely needed some sauce to help it down. At least the fruit was good. Our server was very skilled at tunnel vision as she didn't see us even when walking right by our table. Eventually we caught her and got a refill for our coffee. She was pleasent enough when she arrived but definitely didn't want to do refills. On a more positive note, my friend ordered an omelet which came with potatoes that looked like thick potato chips. They looked good and he liked them. If I return it will be because I am in the area and can't find a better place. In other words, three stars out of five.

Baked on site !! Can't get fresher than that. Ok.. so the prices are a bit high .$3.80 for one ! But these donuts are big.. and I mean ..BIG ! There's no plain donuts here .. these are all flavored . And their apple fritters are MASSIVE !!! I couldn't resist any of them .. but I settled for a creme brulee and an apple fritter ( which I gave to my boss ) . So delicious, I could have eaten a few more but decided not to over indulge ( easily done this time of year ) . If you're in the neighborhood and want a donut .. go here !!! No regrets . It's not a big shop but there's seating area if you want to stay . Clerk behind the counter gave me a few minutes to decide. She kind of figured out it was my first time.

It is lovely, and what you would expect in an English manor. There are different experiences of tea you can get. We got the pricest one - afternoon tea experience this included 5 savories, 5 sweets, and 3 scones with curd, preserves and clotted cream. We each got a different tea. My peaches and cream tea was decadent. Our server was good, but perhaps there was too many tables for her. It took her awhile to refill our pots. She definitely was busy. Also, if you bring a child here you can have a tea with teddy and it was nice that the kids could choose a teddy bear from the selection. A really nice touch. The food was delicious. The savory food we received was cucumber on focaccia, southern chicken croissant, English beef and cheese pastry pie, smoked salmon with capers, and ham and cheese wrap. We received a plain scone and a peaches and cream scone. For dessert we had coconut key lime thumbprint, ruby spring petit four, raspberry mousse bon bon, lemon cloud with blueberry/lavender glaze, and a golden apricot macaron. Everything was tasty and we were stuffed. The clotted cream and the feature raspberry curd was a nice touch. If you like high teas, definitely check this out.

It is very possible to spent a lot of time here. The fun is in mixing and matching the various oils and vinegars. There are so many exciting flavour combinations to try out. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming to choose something. Luckily, the signage throughout the store can help you figure out what you're into. Beside each oil and vinegar, there are suggestions of what foods are best paired with these. I also find that the staff are usually available to help you find what you're looking for. Another plus is that they have different sizes of bottles to choose from. If you're trying out a new flavour you can buy the smallest size. If you have a tried and true favourite, you can buy the largest bottle. They even have gift sets available. My family loves these Evoolution products and have been using them for years. Using these oils and vinegars have elevated my salad eating experiences at home. The bottles look so classy compared to your average grocery store salad dressing. The coolest part is that these oils and vinegars can be used for many other foods such as meats, cheeses, ice cream and popcorn! If you haven't been in one of these stores, I totally recommend checking one out!

Twice I was denied entry and had to resort to peering through the window (ja you's a window shopper). If you get the reference, we should most definitely be friends. Anyways, third time was the charm (although we made it with only half an hour to spare). We walked in and were greeted by a super friendly, easygoing evoo worker. Seriously, so nice - she explained a few things, made a few recommendations based on what I was looking for and then let us go to town on the sampling. I tasted a reasonable amount (reasonable being a loose term) of olive oil and balsamic vinaigrettes. A few that stood out for me: Tuscan herb, garlic, and the cranberry pear balsamic. So good. They come in three sizes (200ml - $13, 375ml - $19 and 750ml - $31). I ended up picking up a Tuscan herb evoo bottle ($19) and tried it in a salad dressing I made. Awesome! Very cool, chic spot - hit it up if you are looking for something to spruce up your salads/chicken/dinners! They even have these little 6 bottle samples ($36) that would be a great gift.

BUT...... When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the owner who introduced himself to us and made us feel welcome right away. I thought I would address the elephant in the room and asked him what was up with the graphic images and awful comments about the meat-handling at his restaurant. The owner, whose named is Abraham, explained how the picture was a result of bad timing and unchecked facts. A delivery had indeed been made, but to the convenience store next to him...(still gross but not relevant to this restaurant). Someone driving by thought it was for his restaurant, took a picture and the story ballooned, including investigative reporting by CBC. It didn't help that the convenience store is also named Harambee, but under different ownership and management. The place was extremely clean! I went to wash my hands before eating - the cafe serves Ethiopian and more regionally specific, Eritrean food, eaten with hands - the washroom was so clean I could smell fresh bleach and the faucet (a good indicator of cleaning frequency) had no water stains and was polished to a mirror finish. I was offered a tour of the kitchen to see my food being prepared and was pleased to see it was also very clean, well-kept and organized. The floors were spotless. The dining area looks fresh and modern with nice colors and tables and chairs in good condition. I totally expected the place to be a dive and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there is clearly a pride of ownership throughout this place! I enjoyed a coffee to start and for lunch we ordered the Dulet (fried tripe) and Tibse as well as a combo that included more Tibse, spinach, potato, carrots and two kinds of lentils. It was all so delicious and the spices were very exciting and exotic to me, despite my well-traveled palate. The windows face south so we were awash in fresh sunshine and the place has parking adjacent to the building. They just did a new facade on their building so their new sign is not up yet but is expected soon. This is certainly a little, undiscovered gem in the heart of the North Edge district and well worth checking out if you like to veer off the beaten path on your gastro-adventures!

My first encounter with Harambee was during a blackout on 107th Avenue two years ago. I was meeting…read morethe owner at the time to chat, and didn't have time to eat, but what I did get was that it was an eatery, very similar to many other places on 107th, that had a largely male patronage. I have since had a friend who works a few blocks away rave about the food, claiming it's better than African Safari and it took this long for me to finally pay a visit. Thanks to another friend who wanted to try a new restaurant on 107th, we decided with Harambee since neither of us had ever eaten there. We came in after 5:30pm to find that we were the only ones in the café. The ownership has since changed; the new owner, Abraham, immediately greeted us and was impressed by my friend's perfect pronunciation of the Eritrean dishes. The menu contained a mix of Ethiopian/Eritrean dishes and Italian dishes like lasagna. My friend opted for the Combo platter (containing Alicha, Tibs, etc.) and espresso while I ordered just the Alicha and a cappuccino. Both platters came with two pieces of injera (one rolled up on top of the injera plate with the platter). The alicha, which was a potato and carrot dish with turmeric, was okay, perhaps a bit bland, but I really enjoyed the hint of berbere spiciness in my friend's lentils. We were served the hot drinks after, which made for a nice dessert. Abraham was extremely friendly and said to call him anytime if we needed anything. "Harambee" which means "coming together" in Swahili is a place that lives up to its name. The café became busy shortly after we had arrived and people came and went to grab drinks and converse, easily chatting up with each other along with the owner. By the bar is a giant mirror in the shape of Africa; reflecting the roots of people who come into the restaurant. My bill was less than $15; worth the quick service and healthy food. "So did you guys enjoy yourselves here?" Abraham asked. I certainly did, and really like the chill community vibe in this place. Harambee truly is a gathering place on 107th.

If you're looking at cooking your own dim sum at home that tastes just as good as the restaurant or making some fresh noodle dishes - this is the place to go! They're very accommodating and friendly and can even offer advice on other things to try. I had curiously wanted to try their fresh shanghai noodles and was told I should try some when I was eyeing it. Without missing a beat they offered a pack for free for me to try. Definitely have gone back and bought more! Tips: Don't steam any of the dim sum in a regular stainless steel steamer. Get a proper bamboo steamer (I found some from TNT for a decent price) - and do not get the small sized ones you see at the dim sum places, pick up the large 20cm or wider ones and get a pot that can hold them (I use a wide 29 cm pot from Canadian tire and rest the bamboo steamers on top the matching bamboo steamer sits perfectly and can hold about 50 pieces of siu-my). They close early so the chances of you getting what you want (if it's a popular item) are slim - it's definitely best to call in your order the day before to ensure they can make enough, sooner if it's around Christmas time. See picture for available dim sum you can order (note it's all frozen and is intended to be steamed from frozen)
