I love Ace as a brand, and it's a great place to get my basic hardware needs. My biggest complaint with this particular store is that it is sometimes unreliable. Several times, I have wanted an item that was out of stock. Worse yet, last time I wanted to buy paint, the person working the paint desk said he didn't know how to mix the brand I wanted, and that the only person who knew that skill had gone home early. read more

My husband and I had to paint a few very bright bedrooms and strip a wall of wallpaper when we moved into our new house. Kathy at Ace had the know-how and experience to help us find the materials we needed, the difference between various types of paint, and the minimum amount of materials needed to do a quality job. She knew that we were on a budget and made sure to advise the best materials for us within our means. We even came back to the store to show her our paint progress and got her advice on separate coats and other projects we had lined up. Ace at Hilldale is a great local hardware store where the employees are friendly and have a rich knowledge of their inventory (I've asked where a specific thing is, multiple times, and have gotten the aisle number and exactly where it's located on the shelf as a response). I use Ace Rewards often and have made several where the staff have been patient to help ensure my coupons and offers go through. We will continue to go to Ace for our other home projects. read more

Horrible customer service. Do not expect them to be responsive or to actually try to make things right. Here's the details of my experience: I put in a warranty claim on a Big Green Egg on a Saturday morning. The service representative assured me he would call by Tuesday at the latest with information about the replacement part and timing. I never received this call, so I called them Friday. The representative informed me that thy still hadn't even filed the claim, but he'd do that right away. He said he'd have to check with their buyer to get me timing and he'd call by Monday. So one week gone and I'm no closer to resolution. No call on Monday(as I should have expected). I call back only to be told that they'd have the guy call me. Another week goes by and I again call them. This time I'm told that the claim is filed, but I'd only get a replacement when they decide to make their next order from Big Green Egg. Well, it's winter and I'm guessing it may be a while before they need to restock inventory of uber expensive grills. I tell them that this makes no sense to be waiting so long to just get the replacement part ordered. I'm told I need to contact their buyer who works at their Sauk store. What? Why don't the Hilldale people do that? I'm the customer. @$#! this customer service. I will never buy anything from the Middleton or Sauk Ace stores ever again. Especially not a big ticket item that is likely could require some sort of service down the road. read more

Definitely a fan of our local Ace Hardware. They are so convenient as our neighborhood hardware store with helpful and knowledgeable people. Yes, prices can be higher than the big box HD or Menard's about 10 miles away. But for smaller items, unique items or if you need a hardware pro who knows what they are doing and what a thing-a-ma-jig looks like, "Ace Is The Place With The Helpful Hardware (Wo)Man." We have been there at least four times in the last decade to have them special cut glass and plexiglass to repair our kids' wayward baseball, basketball, golf, and soccer shots. We also often visit for keys, custom paint, odd nuts and bolts...they are helpful and you neither have to walk all over a huge box store to find what you need nor send up a flare to find and get help from a sales associate with a positive attitude. I was at the HD a couple times this week and our Ace today. The difference in service and knowledge is quite evident. Among Ace's great hardware professionals, Kathy is a gem! I appreciate our local Ace hardware store and they'll always have a role for our home needs. Pro tip: sign up for their Ace Rewards (it's free) for extra savings. I logged on with the express intent of thanking everyone at Ace Hilldale for making this CoVid quarantine as bearable as possible. They have ALWAYS been nice, but lately I have started to appreciate their expertise and generosity more than I ever would have imagined. I have had several home appliances break during the Stay at Home order, have not been able to get service, so turned to YouTube to try and DIY. Every time I call Ace Hilldale, someone kind helps me create a list of essential tools and supplies, tells me how to save a few $ by skipping some of the steps suggested in the online tutorials, and MEETS ME OUTSIDE THE STORE to hand over the bag of washers/gaskets/tubing... everything I've needed, they've found for me. They are wonderful. I just read Dave G's Review from 2/23/19 and think he must have gone to a different Ace Hardware. read more

Good store and EVERYONE (employees and customers) in the store were wearing masks even after the WI supreme court struck down pandemic guidelines. They also have shields at the checkout. I feel safer coming to the store knowing that they have instituted these guidelines. I'm now shopping here instead of a local competitor where employees are not wearing masks and even though they have self-checkout, they are not sanitizing the hand-held scanners between customers. Thank you for helping keep the community safe and healthy. I appreciate that ACE Hardware is responsibly opening their doors and helping reduce the spread of COVID-19. Home projects have not abated, even as rates of infection in Dane County and WI have continued to rise. Employees have been very helpful and I've also had no problems with warranty returns here. read more

My wife poured a bucket of water into the laundry tub, installed by a previous owner more than 25 years ago,and it all poured out onto her feet and the floor. The drain had broken right at the point where it exited the tub and entered the flexible plastic drain pipe. I took the broken parts to Ace and the manager, Adam, told me that it was not something they kept in stock. But he said he could probably come up with a solution and he did! He patiently combed through his inventory of metal and PVC plumbing parts and found everything needed to make the repair, even remembering that he had a nut in the electrical parts to substitute for a part he didn't have in plumbing. I ended up with a couple of extra parts from having to cannibalize some packages that came as a set, but he saved me the cost of having a plumber fix it--a $90 service charge plus parts and labor. I could not find a 75 watt LED light bulb with the narrow base to replace a dim one in my new ceiling fan. I looked online and stopped at another hardware store and they could not find one in their system. Luke at Hilldale Ace took the time to search online and found what i needed. Last Friday around noon I went to the Ace Hardware to ask for help with my smoke detector. The man carefully looked at my batteries and saw that one was it upside down, he turned around and fixed it. I went back to my car and remembered I had My remote garage door opener that didn't work so I went back in and ask for help with that. The same older man gave me more help to open it up, test the battery and scrape off the corrosion that was causing the problem. No charge for any of it. I am grateful for his Pleasant Service. This ACE location is excellent. It's not a huge store, but I'm always surprised by how many items and options they have on those shelves. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, which is great, because even though the store is organized in such a way that it's well labeled and easy to navigate, if you can't find what you're looking for you can ask anyone in the store and they'll know exactly where it's located! This location has a great variety for things like regular hardware needs, gardening (they have the best "Dark Brown Mulch" for gardeners -- guaranteed to keep its color for a year (and it does!) -- the staples for birders (including seasonal migrating birds like Baltimore Orioles, etc). It's also right next to Hildale Mall but still seems to have parking in the lot. Also, for folks with pups, this is a dog friendly place (well-behaved pups on a leash only) and they keep little doggie treats at the counter for well-behaved dogs while you're checking out. It's a welcoming and nice place to shop for sure. read more

I would prefer to leave 0 stars. I have had the worst customer service experience. We ordered some planters online that shipped from the warehouse to this Ace for pickup. The description for the planters online clearly stated they were ceramic. When we arrived to pick them up, they were plastic and we refused the order. Our card had already been charged. The person working made fun of my husband, saying he should have known before he ordered (which is incorrect, it was a mistake on ace.com). He also told him that he could not issue a refund (wtf? It isn't even a refund, we refuse the incorrect merchandise) and stated he could only issue store credit. He then proceeded to tell my husband he must come back in the morning to speak to a manager. When my husband arrived before work the manager went and found the same customer service person and they proceeded to tell my husband false information- that he would have to call ace directly. If that were true, why did they make him come back at 8 in the morning before a long shift at work? Ace online informed me that the worker and manager both should have known they only need to ship the merchandise back to the warehouse. Once it is received the original form of payment will be credited. They should know this. The saga continues. Now we have to recontact the store to explain to them how they can properly operate in their own positions. This is unlike anything I have come across. read more

Good store, good service. I'm a bit biased since I live right around the corner, but I still think its a great shop. Very mom n'pop esque, with shelves shoved full of everything you can imagine-- would be very difficult to navigate were it not for the helpful staff who can show you around. Selection isnt quite home depot sized in terms of the multiplicity of brands of the same item, but you can typically find what you need. Hours are good too-- I find myself in the middle of a motorcycle project needing something urgently fairly often and can always find it here. read more

It feels like every time we try to use the coupons or rewards we have earned through ace, this location won't let us use them because they mark most things on "sale" - sometimes they just say "sale" but are not actually any less than the original price, but this still voids any possible use of a coupon. I went to the Ace Hilldale store today to get some keys made because I know their keys always work. The staff was helpful as always. When I was in the store, one of their employees and I began talking about keys. The conversation went on for a few minutes and the employee introduced himself as Buck. I shook his hand and introduced myself as Jon. Buck and I looked at each other and realized we knew each other from 30 years ago. We walked around the store and talked for a bit, shook hands again and said goodbye. I said I'd be back a bit more often. When I came home, both of my keys worked perfectly. I tried the main door key in several doors and again, it worked great. I'm going back now to get my mailbox key copied and I expect it to work as well. read more

Just went to exchange a propane tank. Walked in, no one at counter, so I set the empty tank on the counter. Waited for the clerk and got yelled at for bringing talk in and told to take the tank outside. It would have been nice for someone to be there when I walked in and ask me nicely to not bring it inside. I take the tank outside and return to find the clerk helping someone else. Nice!. What happened to first come first serve. Not here. I pay for the tank, head outside and grab the exchange tank, and hear a guy say "your welcome". How pretentious. I replied, "You were not thanked, and your welcome" It is the customers transactions that keep the business going. Thank the customer do not reply obnoxiously. If you want good hardware go to the Quality True Value on Park st. They know customer service. Unhappy and not returning. read more
