I've had 90% success with ACE Handyman Services. As a condo owner, I've had several projects I've worked with them on ranging from mounting cabinets I've personally assembled to managing my rental tenant during projects. I've worked with Martha a few times to coordinate parts pickup then installation by one of their handymen. I also like their estimate portal, they respond fast and will work with you on a customized, per-project basis. It's a little pricey, but I haven't had any issues with the quality of work, especially while managing a rental tenant. There was one or two projects I worked with them on, perhaps it was due to the COVID pandemic, but one of their tech seemed to have various issues to not get the job completely finished. There was a range of excuses including vehicles breaking down and one instance included the technician leaving the job unfinished. Perhaps that was a snafu. Another one included the remaining materials were left to be unseen, perhaps there was a miscommunication? Otherwise, I've had good experiences with ACE Handyman Services. read more

I contacted this company to have floodlights mounted on the outside of both sides of my home and towards the backyard. I made the appointment over a week ago and received confirmation of the appointment the night before. At 8 o'clock in the morning, on the date of service, I received a call that they were canceling because it was supposed to rain; unfortunately it never rained but my services were canceled for 2:00 PM central standard time. Now I'm unable to get the lights installed because I work Monday through Friday and today was the only day that I could get them installed. Not happy! read more

The owner came out to the property and estimated repairs at about $7000.00. He just wanted to make as much money as possible on this job and even charged me $75.00 for the on site estimate. I would avoid them. The "craftman" (if you could call him that) they sent was unbelievably slow and seemed to be winging it for the most part. It took 2.5 hours to install a shower rod and 3 toiler paper holders. I was in meetings so wasn't paying attention, but for the life of me can't figure out why those tasks took as long as it did. Further, I made it clear multiple times that I would be installing handle pulls on cabinets. I gave all the C-C lengths and was told it should be no problem. Yet, the craftsman showed up with no templates or marking gauges and did everything by hand, making the task take twice as long as it needed to take if they had the proper tools. During the estimate, they mentioned multiple times that if they need to go to the hardware store that will be added to the hourly cost. Luckily that wasn't the case, but makes me think that it's common for them to show up completely unprepared for a task even when you've explained what needs to be done. If it wasn't for the fact that everyone else was booked, this job would have taken half the time and at half the cost if I hired a more competent service. I would steer clear. read more

I've used this service previously but my last two experiences fell short and I will not be using them again. Most recently was a no show for my Friday 8am appointment that I scheduled at least a week in advance. I received a confirmation call the day before. Their excuse was that the craftsman wasn't working Fridays so they clearly messed up and although they apologized they didn't offer anything in return (eg discount). I took a day off work for nothing. Previous to this appointment I had one of their craftsman move a chandelier from one room to another. He told me he broke a light bulb, which is understandable. But he left it broken on the floor and didn't even clean it up!! read more

I had a terrible experience with Handyman Matters this week. I hope to prevent others from having a negative experience with this review. Mike from Handyman Matters came on Monday to try to help us find where the pipe for our dryer vent got disconnected behind our ceiling - NOT an easy task. He did pretty well trouble-shooting, had to put a few holes in the ceiling to take a look, never found where it was disconnected because it goes behind our neighbor's wall a little, but taped the pipe a little more tightly in some areas. We're hoping that suffices for now, but are considering getting a new dryer. We scheduled him to come back to patch up the ceiling. This was the nightmare. He knew what the job was, because he had been here 4 days before. Nevertheless, he arrived without drywall and needed directions to Menards because he was at a Home Depot earlier that day and it was way too crowded. Why didn't he get the stuff for our job while he was there??? He KNEW what he needed to do because he was the one doing the job before. BTW, we happened to have drywall in the garage, but it was the wrong kind, he said. He goes, and it takes an hour before he gets back. There's $85 down the drain. Then he's here until after 7 pm. (The appointment was at 3 pm.) He hasn't yet painted the patches - they still need to dry about a half hour, he says, before he can paint, and he hates to have us pay while he's waiting for them to dry. Handyman Matters calls this morning around 9 am asking if Mike can return at 11 today. They must be kidding! As if I'm doing nothing but waiting at home for them to come for a third visit and hundreds more dollars to accomplish nothing? I work for a living, too. Life is short. Do you really want to spend 20 hours of this precious gift painting the foyer, living room and dining room, yelling at your partner, chasing a cat that ran through a roller pan, chipping paint speckles off of your chunky hipster glasses, and feeling high but not in a good way? No, it is worth using your soft, college-educated hands to write a check to Handyman Matters. After one visit, you will think of other things to have those handy men to do, things that involve band saws, electricity, and nail guns. Things that you pretend you are handy enough to do, but in reality would mean death or disfigurement if you ever attempted them. After one pre-holiday visit from Handyman Matters, to make the house more presentable to in-laws, I was beyond shame: I had those handy dudes installing shelves and hooks, hanging blinds, rehanging a bedroom door to open out instead of in, repairing rotting iron porch railings, making under-stairs storage area doors, and yes...painting. There is an initial service charge. The last time I used them, in summer 2006, it was $75.00. On top of the service charge, it is time plus materials. This means that small jobs are most cost-effective if you batch as many together as possible during a single visit. In most cases, I bought my own materials, since time used by the service person to buy them is charged at the same rate as actual repair time. The work was done correctly and quickly, and all three gentlemen were courteous, intelligent, and cleaned up after themselves. For the reluctant DIYer, I couldn't recommend them more highly. Beware of this company. It took them over 6 hours to install a front door when they originally said 3-4. Ended up going to court with this company contesting their over billing and poor craftsmanship that I had to pay over $400 to have fixed. They ultimately won because they forged my initials on the estimate part of the invoice and they filled in dollar amounts after it was signed. It is our word against theirs and we can't change the judgement. We did learn a painful lesson about making sure to get copies of everything and getting everything in writing. My advice is to avoid this company, they really took advantage of my wife in a vulnerable position. My wife and I had been searching for a good company to install our new entry door and screen door. After realizing that Home Depot was going to charge us an arm, leg, foot, and a hand to install them we started looking elsewhere. I read the reviews on yelp and realized that Handyman Matters seem to treat people good and give a fair price all the while doing quality work. I called the company on a Monday and they sent Arthur out on Wednesday. Arthur showed up on the dot and was professional. He realized the job was going to take longer but he decided to do the same day anyway. Arthur took his time and had great patience with our old doors. The entry door took 1 day to install so he came back 3 days later and installed the storm door. Excellent work. Arthur told us what he was doing every step of the way and made some suggestions that did not cost too much extra. Love these guys. I will be working with them for a long time. If you have a project call them. They will do it right the first time and charge you a fair price. I sound like a spokesperson for the company but I am not. I just believe in giving credit where credit is due. In these shady economical times, it is nice to know that there are still quality workers out there that are fair and honest. read more

Handyman matters seemed like a good idea when I called them, but basically got over-charged. I called because I had leaks in my wall and needed them patched. The serviceman were friendly but insisted it was a roof problem even tho I told them I had the roof fixed. They did a leak test but told me what I already knew; my walls needed to be sealed. They charged me for an hour and fifteen minutes even though the were done in under a hour. They charged 100 for a ladder and 35 for driving. And 170 per hour. read more

They sound nice and professional over the phone but will send workers that have no idea what they are doing. Took over 6 and a half hours and two trips to install threshold and weatherstripping. I was originally estimated at just 2 and a half hours. The door still wasn't weatherstripped correctly and now I can't even open and close my door properly. Regardless of their price guarantee I had to fight for them not to charge me more than the estimated price. They also guarantee your satisfaction and state that they will come back and fix any issues with a one year warrantee as well. Embarking into the world of service based repair is a dreaded task for most of the general population. Everyone we know has at least one story of unnecessary or hidden charges or poor service. Another all too common trend is the daunting missed or late for appointments excuses. You almost feel lucky to find a place that treats you right. H.M. is that place. I was very happy with Handyman Matters - I've used Mr. Handyman of Lincoln Park before & wasn't able to get an appointment on a day I was working from home. So I took a shot in the dark on the Google & found these guys. Thought they were faster, cheaper & easier to find convenient appointment times than Mr. Handyman. The guy who was sent to my house (Damian) was polite, worked quickly & gave me a deal on labor -- I didn't hear my doorbell ring so the poor guy waited outside for an hour - I said that I'd be more than happy to pay for the full hour since it was 100% my fault that I didn't hear the doorbell ring since I was on a call for work on my blackberry & didn't hear my personal cell ringing in the bottom of my purse when he arrived - but he only charged me for 1/2 hr. This review was almost one star... Here's the story. I have an investment property. I needed to get it rented out quickly but needed to make some repairs before the next renter. It's a condo, so not a huge job. The repairs included some custom order closet doors, which took time to cut, as expected. But the afternoon before the install, I get a call and Handyman Matters says that another job ran over and they can't honor our scheduled appointment. Basically, my interpretation is, I'm the smaller job and I have to get pushed out to accommodate a larger job. I about fall apart, because with an investment property, every day is lost revenue. I literally had everything lined up in order: repairs, cleaning, showing...all back to back, and all contingent on the prior project being completed. However, Martha heard the absolute angst in my voice and somehow figures a way to squeak the job in under the wire, using nights, weekends and a spare 20 minutes from another contractor; and Nelson, an amazing handyman with great patience who did electric and cabinetry, and who went out of his way to ensure the job was done well and on-time, and who also followed up with me the very next day to make sure everything is up to par... There was a bump in the road for sure, and I absolutely panicked, but they remained calm and made sure the job got done. I would definitely recommend these guys. read more

They did a terrible job in communicating the process of repairing our doors in our apt. For whatever reasons, the customer service person decided to not talk to me about the repairing needs but my landlord. Countless times they needed the "approval" from my landlord where she had explicitly told them to move forward with the job. They were dragging their feet from May 2019 all the way to new year. Pretty much a perfect experience.... Needed someone to hang a pot rack, and we have high ceilings which also happen to be concrete (i.e. need a special drill). Our handyman (I forget his name!) showed up on time (8 a.m.) and was done by 9:30. Originally I figured it was maybe a 20 minute job. When he looked at the rack and the ceiling he told me it may be an hour and a half to two hours. At first I thought that timeframe was crazy, but it was not... he did it the right way. It took some serious measuring and some serious taping of plastic around the area so that concrete did not explode all over the apartment when he began to drill. He cleaned up and the job is truly perfect. Came to $180-ish with labor and parts. I did think it was a little bit much that they charge for the plastic to put up while working and for the drill bits that broke (I think those should be absorbed in the hourly rate), but it is OK. Could not have asked for a better job or easier company to work with. Now I'm just frustrated that I didn't see the $20 for $50 yelp deal... read more

I want to take a few minutes to let everyone know how pleased we care with the work we received from Handyman Matters, and most notably Corre Lipp, who was the craftsman who did the work. We had sagging stair railings on our TREX porch, as well as a damaged kick plate at the front door. Corre did exemplary work, improving upon the design to the point that we know we'll not need to repair any of that again. He also did some grout repair indoors where the wood and stone floors meet within three different doorways, knowing enough to use a different material than the original so that we'll not need to replace this every few years as we have been to this point. The count of small fix-it jobs had finally reached critical mass; it was time to call Handyman Matters! I made an appointment for the following week without any trouble; I called three days later to expand the "to do" list; again, not problem. And the handyman called me to confirm early afternoon the day before my appointment. I was always confident he'd show up. He arrived 3 minutes early; I was up and ready so I met him while he waited to knock. He rehung my garage door, caulked two bathrooms, and rehung kitchen cabinet doors, all in about 2 hours. It would take me 3 weeks (I'm not very handy). I've worked with Handyman Matters a half dozen times in the past three years they've delivered a superior product every time. The customer only commitment is to let HM know what needs to be done well before the date of the actual appointment. On-site requests cannot always be accomdated. So, my wife and I bought a home in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood in Chicago back in October, we love it. However, there was some oddly spaced electrical outlets in the living room that if we wanted to have a centered TV, we were going to have exposed wires. Me, thinking "i'm a homeowner now, I can do anything" decided to do my own electrical work...which actually turned out fine, thank god, we have the outlet we wanted...however, it left us with an 8'x1' hole in my wall for the trench I cut to run the conduit. We looked at that hole for MONTHS trying to figure out what to do. Well, a month ago, I decided I was going to try to hang new drywall, mud and tape around the two outlets, even though I knew there would be an issue with the conduit and spacing with the wall. I got it up, sanded and mudded.....and it did not look good. But, I figured I would be able to fix it eventually. 2 weeks ago, my wife informed me that we were going to have our baby shower at our house (did I mention she was pregnant? Well, she is...so there's that). I immediately panic, knowing that I do not have the skill to fix the lumpy wall I had created. I started looking up handyman services in our neighborhood and came across Handyman matters, they were able to schedule me in time for the work to be done for the shower and assured me the handyman could handle the job. Mirko came out today and in less than an hour was able to smooth out my wall and completely fix what I had screwed up. I really didn't know if it would be possible. Once the mudding was done over my mess, we then carefully sanded the area down and primed it to be painted (I know I can handle painting.....I THINK!). While we waited for the mud to dry he even gave me tips on other things in the house that I though could use some finishing touches, and I'm glad I did. I had just bough a transition strip for a room from carpet to tile, and naturally, I bought the wrong kind. Great job all around. First and foremost, after placing an e-mail request for service, I was contacted within 20 minutes by phone by someone to make an appointment. Compare that to at least three other highly Yelp ranked handyman services that took anywhere from a minimum of 48 hours to a maximum of six days to respond to a voicemail. I was scheduled for a repair for noon the next day. Dusan from Handyman Matters arrived 10 minutes early, introduced himself and immediately put on shoe coverings before taking a second step inside my condo. We spoke for about five minutes about everything, and he immediately went to work, repairing an inoperative stove top, clearing clogged dishwasher piping, scraping and recaulking around a bathtub, fixing an inoperative ice dispenser and entirely replacing my constantly leaking kitchen faucet and sprayer while re-installing my faucet mounted Pur water filter. He then showed me how to make some of the repairs myself in the future. Including travel time to and from Home Depot for the faucet, total time came out to just over 2.5 hours at $85/hr. I live in a different state and needed 2 sets of blinds hung. I had been quoted about 1.5 hrs by another company. Took, this guy 2.5 hrs, but I wasn't on-site to supervise or determine if he was really working, so he gets the benefit of the doubt. Bad news was that we were cancelled on TWICE - truck broke down on two separate occasions - weird coincidence? One redeeming benefit of the company is Vanessa - she answers the phone and sets up appointments. She is great and very professional. She was tremendously apologetic on the 2 busted appointments and took off the service fee, so that was fair. read more

Unprofessional and apparently not interested if your job is too small. On 9/21/20 I requested an estimate via their website. I explained the smll-ish job I needed done and attached a photo. At 5:00pm I received a message from Martha L. asking me to call the next day. I called Martha and left a message, she returned my call a few hours later. Martha requested additional photos. I also mentioned another small-ish job I needed work on. Martha sent me an email to attach the photos to. I promptly replied with the request. I never heard back from Martha on the 22nd so on the 23rd I phoned her again and left a message. Several hours went by with no response. I emailed her and expressed my frustration at a lack of response on her part. I told her I found it unprofessional. No response. I figured that Martha must've accidentally severed all of her fingers while slicing her morning bagel and was unable to dial or type. I called the number on their website. I expressed that I had a bit of a complaint and explained the things that that happened (or didn't) with my dealings with Martha. The very nice lady took my information, said she would pass up to "management" and assured me that I would be contacted by someone regarding the work. As of now I've received absolutely no response from anyone at Ace Handymen service. I'd like to say that at no time was I rude (other than saying they are unprofessional, which they are), lost my temper or said anything inappropriate. After my update in August, I got a call from Paul. His tone was similar to his responses to less-than-ideal reviews here on Yelp....mildly apologetic but defensive. I didn't get the feeling that he was sorry I had had a frustrating and expensive experience. Rather, he seemed sorry that I had given a poor review. Paul said if I really felt the service was bad, he guessed they could refund my $200. A week or so later, someone from their office called and said they'd sent a check but it had been returned, so I gave them the correct address. I haven't received anything. I am very unhappy with this business. I agree with other reviewers that you need to find a place that quotes based on the job and not the hour. I called to get my water heater fixed. He came and lit it which took 5 minutes. That cost me $120! It went out a few hours later because there was actually something wrong with it. To come back and fix it they wanted to charge $120 more plus the cost of the part that needed to be replaced. I have looked at the recent reviews and it seems like a trend is happening. Handyman Matters worked on my condo in 2012 and the work was good and I had no complaints. However I hired them again in August 2014 and the results were pretty bad as far as the work done and the customer service provided afterward. I hired Handyman Matters to, "replace three side of rooftop door trim and paint white" and "troubleshoot and flash, caulk or seal around skylight" These are direct quotes from the work estimate. The work that was actually done that day was simply repainting the wood trim without replacement and, "several patches" to the skylight which is installed wrong with no proper flashing according to the work log. This is after the person assigned to the job called me to say my skylight needed to be replaced and that he would look for one to buy and call me back and let me know either way. No call back was ever made. When I got the bill I had some questions about the skylight and the time. What are these "patches" that were made? Why didn't the guy call me back?" Why did it take 2 hours to paint door trim and "patch" the skylight? I spoke with Martha, the representative that helped set up the job. She told me the person assigned to work on my condo could not be reached because he no longer worked for Handyman Matters. She told me that my bill was for less hours than estimated and therefore cost less than my estimate. I argued that the job was not done correctly so who cares if it cost me less money. The door trim was only painted not replaced and painted and the skylight, which is stated to need proper flashing on the work quote at least and replaced at the most, was only "patched". Flashing was one of the options in my estimate for the skylight. This at least should have been done. I talked to Martha about this issue extensively over several phone calls. No mention to get the manager involved. No apology for the lack of communication by the employee who did the job. No real customer service. I asked for a lower price at least and she told me I paid less than the estimate. And I did. I paid less because the work was crap. I paid less because very little was done. Okay, my fellow Yelp Friends: I also hired another contractor Handyman Matters of Chicago to do the same job as Chicago Service Group early part of April, 2012 sans the fence posts reinforcements. I paid $376.00 for the following work: Please keep in mind that they charge an upfront fee of $39.00 to grace me with their presence, & $85.00 per hour, & then charge by every quarter of an hour. 1) Rescrew 4 long screws to an existing bathoom sink. This man who did the work did not even have the proper screws & spent about 20 minutes looking for them in his van. The clock was ticking here. 2) Cut grass & clean the stairs leading to the basement. 3) Replace 1/2 ceiling panel in the corner of the kitchen. This contractor came to my home about 45 minutes late & told me that he was on his way to pickup the ceiling panel. Guess what? He did not have the panel & asked me to look for a Home Depot that carried the panel. He then went to the Home Depot on West North Avenue & took an hour to come back, thus I was charged an additional $85.00. The same man who did the above work took photos of the Chain Link Fence so he could show that only 3 posts needed cement reinforcement. The office called me the next day to say that it would take a team of 6 people 12 hours charging me $85.00 per hour!!!! I said no way!! I cancelled. I stated to the rep that they breached their own contract by not having the necessary tools to do the job. She shrugged it off. I was hoping they would be honest enough to refund part of my money, but, what do you expect? Their actions speak volumes & I will never deal with them again. Absolutely horrible! There technicians were 2 HOURS late, did not call, and wore there shoes all over my house!!! Even after i asked them to take them off!! I would not hire these guys to take out my garbage! They came to patch drywall, and it now looks worse then it did before they got there. They then over charged me, and tracked mud throughout my entire house!! Never again will i call Handyman Matters. Horrible read more

I resent having to give one star. My ceiling fixture needed part. They sent someone out who stated that "it couldn't be fixed, then billed me $124. Since I knew it could be repaired, I called Gorman restoration. lucky came out, purchased a $5 part and installed it in a matter of minutes. They are refunding money, but only when I told them I would take them to pro se. I will be using Gorman restoration for future projects. If I had believed handyman matters person, I would have spent money on a new fixture. I will not use them again, and I recommend others. To be careful. read more

I recently got robbed and was in need of a completely new door. I called all over the city and Handyman Matters was the most professional and understanding. I was able to get someone the next day to install the new door and frame, as well as the locks. The job was done quickly, the worker was professional and easy to deal with, and the quality of work was outstanding! I will definitely be using them in the future for other jobs that might come up.
