I have heard several friends rave about this place and I have no idea why. I ordered, and paid a pretty penny for, a half sheet cake for an event. It was ready on time and beautifully decorated. But when we cut into it, each piece fell apart because the cake was SO DRY!! I couldn't believe it! I've had dorm cafeteria cake that was better than this! Cakes made from a boxed cake mix are more moist than this! Did ownership change? Did they stop using butter? Did all the experienced bakers quit? Do they not care about creating a quality product? I went into Ace on a slow Wednesday afternoon. The place was totally empty except two women behind the counter. I was completely ignored by both of them. I figured maybe they had to just finish some paperwork or file something, as they kept shuffling papers around and chatted with each other about broken staplers and loudly complained about customer orders (!?)... I've never like Ace but I think they're like an unspoken Chicago institution to southsiders. They're always packed, I can't understand why. A coworker of mine brought me a piece of her baby shower cake, to the naked eye, Ace cakes are disguised as yummy 'looking' cakes. However, once one is tricked into tasting this travesty.... I neglected to ask where she got it. The second I tasted it I knew it was Ace. I can't really wrap my mind around the whole dry, flavorless cake thing they have going, but I can see they're making a killing cranking them out. Totally OVERRATED, the cakes crumble when you cut them, just not the best quality or flavor! They are ok for a sweet tooth craving but as far as for a major events I definitely would not have them make my cake, perhaps for an office party I would, because it's cheap and and it's for work! I've been buying Birthday cakes and pastries from this Bakery for yrs. They also did my wedding cake and not only was it beautiful but also Delicious every time I do a party which is quite often I always get asked where did you get the cake. I've had them designs me cakes for different themes from the Bears to Tinkerbell they are very attentive to what you want. And I've never had to wait when picking up a cake. I'm in and out and they never disappoint and it's so frickin good. I bought a slice of caramel cake and a slice of Oreo mousse cake. They weren't that good. I turn right around and go back a week later and get a slice of cheesecake, a slice of lemon cake w/whipped cream, a slice of chocolate mousse cake w/ a ganache topping. What can I say except that I need to just stay away because the last two times were not good and I'm only going to cheat on my diet so much. The chocolate cake tasted like a bottle of cheap chocolate syrup. The cheesecake was watery and too rich which seems impossible but it's true. I'm done unless it's a party cake. So this is the only spot i get my cakes from. I moved to Bridgeport 11yrs ago and this bakery was right in the neighborhood. I got my first cake there for my daughters birthday and to my amazement it was the most delicious cakes i ever had. I have never gone anywhere else since. what a selection as well they have all kinds of designs as well birthday, wedding, baby shower, graduation, exotic and just special order and design. Other than customizing the cake's design, there's very little else you can change, such as the amount of sugar used or different fillings. If I could rate this experience it would be a negative ten. Like other reviews, the same thing happened. I picked up my cake for a very special birthday, the cake on the outside was beautiful, but unfortunately when you cut into it it was so dry you could choke. The frosting was not sweet and they added the gold things which I specifically asked to not have. When I spoke to the owner, Lisa she agreed that the cake was not good and she would refund. She said that the cake was awful and no where near their standard. She promised a refund. My mother, who is 70 years old went over to get her refund and the owner never came and she has been non responsive. Everyone at the shop has been telling me about a new baker and that's probably the issue. But the owner , LISA lives upstairs and she has yet to answer any calls from her staff and myself. My family had been using them for years and seems as if they have fallen off. I am very disappointed that they would take advantage of 70 year old woman. I patronized Ace Bakery for my mom's Surprise 80th Birthday celebration. We had a beautiful celebration at a high end hotel in downtown Chicago. The hotel's initials are R-C. I ordered the cake for delivery and scheduled it for a 2:00pm delivery. I was told that they have a 1 hour window and that the cake would be delivered no later than 3pm. That was fine because the event was scheduled to begin at 3:00pm with my mom arriving at 3:30pm. Needless to say there was no cake at 3pm, 3:30pm, or 4:00pm. I started calling the bakery at 3:15pm to track down my cake (BTW It was paid in full days prior to the event). Once I told the lady on the phone what I was calling for, she put me on hold and never returned. I called approximately 15 times between 3:15 and 4:00pm, furious about the cake, the horrible customer service, and most importantly how it ruined my mom's surprise. There was no cake for pictures or videos. No one ever reached out to me to let me know that there was an issue with my order. All calls were initiated by me. At 4:10, someone finally answered the phone with an extremely weak apology and a bag of excuses. They said that the owner, Lisa, was on her way to deliver the cake. Lisa arrived around 4:30, an hour and a half late. I was so angry that I could have smashed the entire cake in her face. She apologized stating that she had car trouble. However, in the era of Uber, that was extremely lame. She asked me to call her on Monday so that she could work out compensation. Needless to say, she never answered my call. The event was January 20th and she still hasn't answered. She has all of my information from the order and has made no attempt to reach out to me. I verbally informed her that my family has patronized Ace Bakery for many years, since it was a small shop on the west side of Halsted, then operated by her father. I let her know that I was exceedingly disappointed by the customer service and more hurt by the stain and damper this put on my Mom's 80th birthday celebration. You only get one time to make this impression and preserve these memories, and thanks to ACE BAKERY, they ruined a beautiful day...#stolenmemories. If I could give them a negative rating, I would. My message to anyone reading this is go somewhere else. These are NOT honorable people and have NO business ethics or common decency whatsoever. I just purchased a birthday cake for my brother's birthday and I was completely satisfied with the outcome. I had a photo of my brother printed on the cake and it came out perfect!! The cake's are also the best I have ever had, delicious!!! They are a little pricey (I paid about $50) but worth every penny. As soon as I called and told her that we like the the 2 tiered car cake but need to modify it, even without listening to what I really want to modify, she is like a 2 tiered cake requires a deposit and I am concerned as to how will you get that to me. I kept telling her that it is fine I can pay the deposit right now over the phone if we finalize the design, or I can arrange for a friend to drop off the deposit at the shop, but she was just not ready to listen to me. All she kept saying was no...how will you get me the deposit and all. OH MY GOD!! YOU WOMAN!! atleast listen to what I want in the cake!! it was not supposed to be a 2 tiered cake in the first place because I have less people at the party. I just want to keep the same concept of the foliage and green trees and all and just add animals instead of the cars in the 1st tier. The 2nd tier is not even suppossed to be there. THIS BAKERY IS LUCKY TO STILL BE IN BUSINESS!! Their customer service is just horrible. I hesitated going in simply because of the negative reviews but decided to give them a chance. First of all, there are only two employees working the counter and they both have nasty attitudes. They treat customers as if they should suck up to them. I went in on a Saturday and was quoted a price for a birthday cake and then when I came back that Wednesday I was told a different price. The explanation was "well wait for her to service you then", referring to the girl who I told her originally helped on Saturday. They do not have set prices for cakes or decorations. It seemed as if they were making it up as they went and don't you dare question the price they will quickly get an attitude. They did not take the time to work with me on my order instead the girl chose to help someone else who was picking up her cake, ignoring me and my order. I was furious so I told them how rude they were and left without placing an order. They didn't deserve my money nor any more of my time. If I were you I wouldn't either. I've purchased cupcake for my son's birthday for the past couple of years from Ace. They're not the best I've ever had, but toddlers don't have the most sophisticates palates, so they're fine. But I was really disappointed this year when I called the bakery at 8:00a to see if I could have 12 basic cupcakes (absolutely nothing fancy) done by 3:00p. I was told that this was absolutely impossible. I informed them that last year it was not a problem, so what has changed? I emailed the bakery over a week ago inquiring about delivery and stating all of the goodies I would be purchasing. My Mom can't eat chocaolate and this place has some fine sounding alternatives, even old school banana boats which my Mom used to buy me for my birthday as a child. I received no email reply. I have been a loyal customer of Ace Bakeries for about 10 years. I recently had a very negative experience with the owner Lisa. The employees here have always been very nice and helpful. I spoke with Lisa over the phone after trying to reach her for about a month or so regarding a business opportunity for Ace Bakeries. This was my go to bakery so of course I thought about them first. Well, spoke to Lisa which I was very excited to finally talk to her. ME: "So happy to finally talk with you" LISA-"What is it! What do you want because I am very busy!!" ME: " Oh, I have been trying to reach you to discuss a business matter for your bakery". LISA-"Well um, I'm not interested and I'm busy so send me a e-mail or something." Well, I was flabbergasted. It's one thing if you have no interest in my business opportunity, its another when you talk to me like I just slapped you in the face. I am a very nice and down to earth person and get along with everyone. This owner turned me against a bakery that I once enjoyed. I will take my business now to Roesers Bakery on North Avenue. The owner is very nice and loves his customers. Lisa if you are reading this Customer Service is a full-Time job. When we are busy or not. I was a loyal customer before that phone call and anyone who I know(and I kinda know a lot of people) I will discourage them from doing business with you. I had heard good things about this bakery. So one day, I walked in and purchased a cake and six doughnuts. All six doughnuts were stuffed into one paper bag. The bag fell over and one of the doughnuts fell out onto the counter. The bakery employee just picked up the bag and put the same doughnut back into the bag. The cake was just ok. Definitely not as good as people are saying. It had very little filling and not much taste. I have gotten better tasting cakes and at a much cheaper price from Jewel-Osco. read more
