If you want fried, assembly line greasy food (think Chi-Chi's, On The Border, Taco Bell), this is not the place for you. If however, you want freshly prepared authentic Mexican cuisine, visit Aby's ASAP. As an aside, every table gets free chips and salsa, so I'm not sure what the previous reviewer is referring to. Some standout dishes that we have regularly are the pollo verde, chile relleno, enchiladas and tortilla soup. Diners get to choose what type of sauce they'd like on their dish- ranging from mild and not spicy at all to very, very hot. My family eats at Aby's at least twice a week- it's that good. Not the best. Very disappointing. Our waiter was excellent, my dinner was not. I ordered an appetizer with lobster. I don't thing there was a teaspoon of lobster meat. I sent it back and asked for two chicken tacos. Clearly the kitchen was annoyed. I got two tacos with chicken and a sprinkle of lettuce. That's it, no sour cream, salsa. I have never had a bad meal at this place. The flavors are always clean and each plate is perfectly cooked and presented. I have been eating for for a decade and each time the service is perfect. the owner and staff are friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the location is easil accessed. Overall solid Mexican restaurant. The food was pretty tasty, but not the best quality. Quesadillas didn't come with sour cream and salsa, I got charged for that. Definitely a great Mexican place. I've been there twice and have enjoyed my meal both times. The service the first time was a little annoying, the waiter took our chips & salsa without asking if we were done and tried to take my date's food before he had finished eating. I felt like they were rushing us, but we were well before closing time. The second time I went the service was a lot better. The atmosphere is gorgeous and quiet. Located right in downtown Matawan, this is a Mexican restaurant. You wouldn't think it, just hearing the name. It's a small place with maybe a dozen tables. Nothing fancy. The people working there are great people, always friendly. It's a BYO, which is always a good thing. The menu is authentic Mexican at fairly reasonable prices. Burritos, chimichangas, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas...everything you would expect from a place like this. You can also get combos of the above. I usually order a dish called "dos compadres," which is salmon filet and shrimp cooked in a chipotle cream sauce. Most main courses come with black beans and Mexican rice. The quality of the food is good most of the time. But every once in a while the beef and chicken in their dishes can be overcooked. I guess that can happen anywhere. Living in central jersey this place has pretty authentic Mexican food. The price for the portions are pretty good. The ambiance and the cleanliness is very nice. It's definitely a place I would go back to for a quick dinner/lunch. I love the chicken nacho appetizer,quesadillas, and tacos. They give you reasonable portions for what you pay. Also, the chicken tortilla soup is delicious and it may look small, but it is pretty filling! My fiancé loves the enchiladas & burritos. I like how you can BYOB. The waiters are friendly. I was very happy with the service, and reasonable prices. I definitely recommend this spot. Aby's is great! The staff are always very nice and welcoming, and the food is delicious. My whole family loves Aby's.

We have been going to Aby's for a few years. I think it was better when it first opened, but it is still a decent place. I definitely would recommend trying the specials, they are always excellent. The service is ok and always polite. We go a few times a year since it is close to home and much better than those chain Mexican places. I took my wife, kids and dad to this restaurant a few months ago. I was expecting the food to be "semi-decent" to "pretty good". It turned out to be some of the best Mexican food we had eaten in a long time. We ordered a mix of enchiladas, tacos, tamales, and quesadillas (for the kids). The portions were perfect; everything comes with a side of rice and refried beans. Plus, the wait staff will tell you everything is chopped and prepared fresh each day, and I don't doubt it! Speaking of wait staff, the young men were highly professional and treated my kids with proper respect. I've eaten here two times. Plenty of parking and close to the Matawan train station. Service is good but on my last visit we asked for salsa to be brought separately, when the meal arrived it was covered in it. We were very hungry so we ate it anyway. have been waiting to try this place for a long time it was well worth it.. place is small and unless you are looking for it can drive right by.. we got the last table as the other half of the place was having a party .. we were seated immediately and our beverage order was taken right away.. they are very attentive to all your needs and are constantly checking back to make sure evreything is ok.. had chicken chimichanga and it was delicious. other guests had the specials of the day and no one was disappointed .. the portions are quite large !! i will say the only disappointment was the dessert we ordered flan and it was not good at all. to thick and tasted more like pumpkin pie so i will say stay away from that otherwise i don't think you will be disappointed and i will be going back !! read more

Fantastic Mexican restaurant. Everything taste homemade and they clearly care a lot about their food and customers. If you catch me at the wrong time the service can be a little slow but it's not because they are ignoring you. Their salsa is made fresh and is a phenomenal way to start the meal if they forget to put on the table make sure you ask for it. Extremely recommend their Seafoods very wholesome tasty and the perfect remedy if you have a sore throat. My personal favorite is the Aztec burrito. If you can try to get the waiter with the long hair gives great recommendations and will never steer you wrong. read more

The food here is always outstanding. The tamales are definitely my favorite dish, they just melt in your mouth. I have also tried the fajitas and chimichanga and have not been disappointed. My husband loves the pollo Mexicano, and we often end up coming here simply because he is craving it. The rice and beans are so yummy, my husband actually loves them too and he never liked black beans before! The avocado sauce and chipotle cream sauce (not as spicy as I was expecting, but I don't like too much spice) are both out of this world, they should sell them in bottles. No flavor!! Tacos what a disappointment. Guacamole was good and fresh. but not worth it just for that, and service was the worst. We told our server the tacos werent any good he didnt apologize or offer to get a manager. We happened to see the manager and pulled him over. He didnt apologize either he just seemed annoyed. Great place for Mexican!! Generous portions of chips and salsa that are complimentary. My favorite dish and go to dish are the tamales, they are amazing!! First let me say that I have been coming to Aby"s since they were in a hole-in-the-wall place on main street Matawan. One thing in particular has annoyed me for years. They do not serve you chips and salsa when you first sit down. And if, as I occasionally do, you order two appetizers with a side order of rice and beans, which basically costs the same as a dinner, you don't get salsa and chips at all.
