I knew that the trend would eventually make it to Montclair. I mean for goodness sake the town is literally becoming an extension of the City. The trend I'm referring to is Thai-style ice cream rolls. These delectable desserts, also called stir-fried ice cream, are made on a frozen teppan grill (and by frozen the temperature of the grill goes as low as -35C). Cream is poured on the grill along with whatever ingredients your heart desires and is chopped, mixed, flattened, and rolled to reveal a novelty dessert experience that few can argue is one of a kind. It's taking the traditional ice cream to a whole new level. At a not-so-cheap price of $7 per cup, one size only please, I was able to indulge on the "Camp and Chill" concoction that this store offers. Cream base, marshmallow, and graham crackers are mixed together for a harmonious sugar rush that last for hours. The final product that stood right in front of me was a heavenly vision of five rolled ice cream, toasted marshmallow on a stick, condensed milk topping, and drizzled with the quintessential chocolate syrup. Absolute Zero has wonderful ice cream. We waited about 25 minutes for our order to finish, which was not too bad on a very crowded night. The guy that was asking me for the toppings was very sarcastic and was very rude to the customer. I ordered the oreo rolled ice cream, and put strawberry pocky sticks, marshmallows, and crushed oreo. Due to the customization and process of rolling the ice cream it takes a long time for the line to move along. Checked out Absolute Zero last week, now that this ice cream trend has made it to the 'burbs! :) We walked in at prime time in a Sat night and we're able to order right away but they warned it might take 30 min for our orders to be made. Points for honesty but I think it only ended up being a 15 min wait. If you are not familiar with the Thai style, every cup is made to order with your specified ingredients (remember the Coldstone craze?!?), but the differentiating factor is the fresh cream they use. The ice cream has a more rich and pure flavor. Less chemicals and sugar are needed. I had the berry blast, basically a take on strawberry shortcake. It was delicious and even better than the one I've had in NYC (and without the hr long wait!) This place is great for kids and you will enjoy watching your ice cream being made as much as they will. Great Experience My friends and I stopped by for our first ice cream roll experience. Even though the shop is small, they pack in a whole lot of delicious fun. This was one of the best ice cream places I have ever tried. They make ice cream in front of you in a unique way and all of the flavors are made differently. I ordered their "I'm in love with the cocoa brownie" and they broke up an actual brownie and used it to make the ice cream. I was in the area looking for ice cream and picked this place based on the Yelp rating alone, without knowing anything about the process. Prior to ordering was told that it would be 30-35 minutes for the order to be ready? Huh? It took nearly half that long to find parking on Bloomfield Ave so my daughter and stuck with it. I'm really glad we did! It was a truly unique and delicious ice cream experience. They make each ice cream creation to order and when it is your turn they call you over to watch through the glass and pick your unlimited toppings. It was fun to watch the cream and ingredients come together and then finished off with the toppings of your choice. Although this place is very pricey for an ice cream store. I would definitely say it's worth it. For about $12 you can get a cup of freshly made ice cream with unlimited toppings. The staff here is very nice and welcoming, and the overall vibe of the place is perfect for relaxing. I had the hulk smash, and I was pleasantly surprised on how good it is. The ice cream itself didn't particularly taste any different than the ice cream you can get at gelotti (not sure if I spelt that right)or carvel, but the fruit blended into really made it stand out.
