I had such a fantastic experience with the About Smiles team. They were professional, warm and welcoming and didn't try to oversell me on services I did not need. It should be mentioned that I hadn't been to a dentist in almost over a decade...Seriously, since I was a teenager! I was a bit anxious and the staff made sure they took every precaution possible to make me comfortable and relaxed. Dr. Lane was awesome! He talked me through everything and took time to answer all of my questions. The hygienist Dawn and Kathy the assistant, were both so lovely and attentive. The receptionists at the front desks were also very welcoming. Collectively, from start to end they made the ENTIRE experience relaxing and pain free! I rarely write reviews but this place is horrible! the front desk is rude. One literally hung up on me! They tried to over-bill my wife once and someone in the office smells of cigarettes. My crown is failing after less than 1.5 years causing a tooth ache. I am out of town and they will not prescribe me an antibiotic unless I come into the office (I was told this was a law which it is not). It's more about money than anything else. I found About Smiles on an internet search of dental near my home. Dr.Sarah Herman makes your teeth the least of your worries and does it perfectly. She is excellent at explaining what is occurring during the procedure. The dental hygienists were so patient and answered many of my questions. Although the dentists in the South Austin office are top-notch, they influence the office staff, and I am not too happy about that office. It seems that overcharging patients is normal here. In addition to the 3% for services billed using a patient's credit card, surprise bills are also possible. My health insurance often informs me before About Smiles does. Tiggy charged my card. I specifically asked her if I could alter my payment if I came back in soon. Yes, I was given that option. I returned later with a plan to use a debit card with NO 3% upcharge. Tiggy was busy so Peggy took my second transaction, I asked her if it was difficult, and she replied it was. BooHoo--BTW, Peggy seems like a candidate who does not work with patients much or at all. I apologized to Peggy. I WAS given the option to pay in another form, So I was there to pay with a debit card. Peggy billed the services as credit! Not as debit. Excuse me!! Here I follow the clinic instructions and am still out $23.00!!! I need the money, honey. I am not freely giving About Smiles one. more. cent. I am finished with About Smiles. I have been going to Dr. Hoover since she purchased the practice from Dr. Smith who was my dentist since I first started going to the dentist as a child. So needless to say, she had big shoes to fill. However I highly recommend her dental practice, she is a delight and always makes you feel at ease and easy to converse with. I have had many dental procedures from X-rays to cavities and always had a professional and quality result. The facilities are modern and she uses modern technology. Update 2.5 years later: -I have had zero need for fillings. My teeth have been perfectly fine these past 2.5 years. Clearly I never needed the 3 additional fillings and I'm confident I didn't need the other 2 fillings or crown either. But it's too late for those. -Speaking of the crown I never needed that About Smiles installed in my mouth, since it was porcelain instead of a stronger material, it now has cracked, causing pain, and now I need a new, better crown. This is of course extremely expensive. Going to About Smiles is a gift that keeps on giving... I *strongly* recommend you never go here. Very tempted to report these people to the Dental Board or whatever it is. Horrible. read more

Brident was taking forever to send over my xrays from a previous visit so they did a few free ones to get my appointment started. They made their treatment not so overwhelming and weren't trying to collect payment for everything up front like Brident. TLDR; They padded the bill as much as possible. I like the atmosphere and location. Everyone is friendly including Dr Hoover, two hygienists and all staff I met. They have a lot going for them-- BUT I've also has some bad experiences. I had the same dentist and hygienist for 3 years. They never mentioned my fillings (I have none) or of needed drilling. Then again, that was at a grant-funded community clinic. Maybe they had lower standards, or just didn't have a profit motive? For the record, it was a great clinic. I'm grateful I had access to it. I question About Smiles add-on services, and their oral evaluation of my tooth condition. 1st appointment they informed me of two filling that I was not aware I had-- suspicious to say the least! Of course they wanted to drill two more, the same day. Minor fillings at $200 a pop add up fast. They suggested to apply for a line of credit. Still, for $99 I got a fair deal on the cleaning, comprehensive evaluation, x-rays, etc. I went for a 2nd appointment 6 mo later for another cleaning. Good hygienist, very thorough and knowledgeable. Again I told them no on all add-ons-- just the cleaning and paid $92. I just received a bill for that cleaning only visit from 3 mos ago. There was one $52 added-on for "periodic oral evaluation" unpaid from the 2nd appointment. But, I just had a comprehensive evaluation 6 mo before. This kind of calendar-bill code padding nonsense may be standard practice. That doesn't make it right! read more

You guys! I don't know why About Smiles only has 3 stars on Yelp when they definitely deserve 5! I've been seeing Dr. Hoover for over a year now and she's FANTASTIC. I'm absolutely terrified of dental work but I've had nothing but stellar experiences here and Dr. Hoover works with plenty of patients who have my same fear and she strives to create a pain-free, pleasant, relaxing experience. My most recent experience is as follow: I had 5 cavities. I do not do well with dental work. Dr. Hoover offers "sleep dentistry" which entails providing the patient with a soothing sleep agent and laughing gas so that they are unaware of the work being done. We scheduled a time for me to come in and have all 5 filled and do a periodontal cleaning while I was knocked out. The day arrives and I show up and am handed a little blue pill. Immediately, my anxiety kicks in and I start freaking out. The staff was so lovely and calming and sweet, but I panicked and ran. Yep, I left. Even though it was a 2+ hr appointment that had been blocked off for me. Was I mistreated? Was I overcharged? Was I made to feel humiliated? No. They rescheduled me for a week later and even got me the sleeping pill prescription so I could take it the night before to begin relaxing then and wake up already in a better state of mind. When I arrived for my 2nd appointment, everyone was so kind and warm and no-one made me feel like crap for what had happened the week before. The whole procedure went off without a hitch. Dr. Hoover is a gem of a human being - she's all smiles, super warm, listens to your fears/concerns, tells it straight. I felt no pain during my procedure, they let me listen to my iPod and had the TV showing How I Met Your Mother. My numbness wore off within a few hours and I felt right as rain. If you have any fears about dental work - Dr. Hoover is the dentist for you. A staff of really sweet, warm people works at the office and they are all willing to work with you to make things happen. We had a very disapointing experience with this business. The truth be told, I cannot comment on their actual Dentistry work, only on their integrity, as I never made it through their front door. In February we were made aware of a "Family Free Day" for families to come into their office on March 2nd for a free cleaning or filling or extraction. We have a printout of this advertisement directly from their website. We also called their office to confirm and they said to come early on the morning of as appointments were to be made same-day and on a "first come, first serve" basis. They normally open on Saturdays from 9am-3pm, but on the Family Free Day they were to be open at 7am. We arrived at 7:30am on the 2nd and the place was locked and empty. Not a sign or notice on the door. There were several other folks waiting in the parking lot for the same thing. Some had travelled up to an hour, like us. I can only imagine that there were several more that had already left. We gave these folks the benefit of the doubt and waited in the parking lot in our car, with 5 children, until 9am. This was their normal advertised time of business on Saturdays. Still, nobody showed. Apparently they took the day off, probably as not to have to deal with any of us. I went back to their website and they had changed their Family Free Day from the 2nd to the 23rd AND they changed it for family members age 18 and older only. So you can't even call this a "Family Free Day" anymore, but an "Adult Free Day". My guess, and this is only an assumption, is they were overwhelmed with responses from families that wanted to take advantage of this offer for their entire family, like us. So they changed the rules to adults only, updated their website and took the day off to avoid facing those of us who showed up. Regardless of my assumption: bad form. The dentist is never thought of as a great place to go. However, it is a necessary evil in life that is part of adulting. I'm inspired to write this review because this dentist's office was actually a pleasant experience, and I was blown away by the quality of my experience. I had to go in because I had a tooth infection, and I ended up getting that tooth pulled plus a wisdom tooth on the same day. They got me in right away, and I noticed that the office was lovely and that you can drink coffee or tea while you wait. (If you're worried about your breath, they have mouthwash in the bathroom!) ;-) In the dentist's chair, I prepared myself for the torturous nightmare to begin. It never did. Surprisingly, they offered me sunglasses and a blanket. I felt like I was in a sci-fi movie with all the high-tech equipment. Dr. Nguyen and his assistant made me feel at ease, and he even joked that he was going to whisper my teeth out of my mouth! They did manage to extract the molar and a wisdom tooth with very minimal pain. I did not even need to take painkillers afterwards, which was shocking! He is knowledgeable, and thorough and the bed side manner I received is better than I could have hoped for somebody who does not have ample dental coverage and tends to avoid dental care. Adequate dentistry work, but customer service is declining, as of late... My husband and I both go to About Smiles (for now, and not much longer). The dentists and hygienists themselves are great and very friendly. They do take their time, which is good and bad given most people want to get in and out of the dentist as quickly as possible. They sort of bounce from room to room working on different patients at a time which feels like the process is slowed but I'm okay with that most of the time. We even moved quite a good distance away, and still continue to go to About Smiles, but at this time I think that will change. They tend to drop the ball where communication and billing is concerned. We've been waiting for an issue with a bill to be resolved for over 6 months, and until I followed up recently they were just continuing to bill us without following up on the issue at hand, which had to do with insurance covering certain procedures (we all know how this goes, and it happens to no fault of the dentist's office). Leading me to my main issue; the female who handled my calls yesterday and today. She specifically said she was the newest person at the facility and she couldn't give me straight answers on some of the questions I had, and had said someone above her was going to give me a call to discuss, but I never received a call. So naturally, I followed up today. I misread a portion of her email, and misunderstood the cost of something, and instead of patiently explaining that I missed that piece of her email, she talked over me and repeated herself in a nasty tone 4 times, to the point where when she finally stopped speaking, my response was "can you cut the attitude, I'm reaching out for information when no one returned my call". Her name is Gabby Mirelez, FYI. There was another girl at the front desk who was absolutely awesome, I'm not sure if she's not there anymore, or I've just been unfortunate enough to get Gabrielle on the phone the last few times, but I can say once we figure all of this out, and I go for the final appointment I have scheduled, we'll be switching dentists due to poor customer service. read more

Dr. Gretchen Hoover is amazing. She is really sweet, funny, and goes above and beyond for customer care. Her magic touch is the soothing care she gives when giving you a shot (in the mouth!). She jiggles your cheek and talks you through it, making the anxiety so much less. Also, the receptionist, Starr, is great. Every single time I have called this office, it has been met with ease and kindness. I greatly appreciate the customer care they put into their work. Lately, I have had multiple dental needs that need fixing. One could get kinda tired of having to go back to the dentist, multiple times, mouth wide open, and multiple hands working on your teeth. This place is the worst. It was a super uncomfortable environment, and I feel I was completely taken advantage of there. I had a feeling that some of the things they said that I needed were a little strange. Apparently I was in the early stages of GUM DISEASE and would need a "deep cleaning" that would, of course, cost a great deal of money. I'm 24 years old and brush and floss regularly. No way. So, I went to TWO other dentists to see if they would tell me the same thing. Lo and behold, I was told I had completely healthy teeth AND gums. They did take a LONG time on X-rays however, and their X-ray equipment was definitely a bit outdated, and kind of painful. The hygienist did rush through my cleaning, but Dr. Hoover was definitely the best part-- very kind, courteous and thorough, and didn't try to push any extra services. I went in because of a promotion they had over KUT radio that included a free Sonic Electric Brush, teeth cleaning, and X-rays for 99dollars. After 1.5hrs, they said that I need a deep cleaning and that I would need to come back later. They quoted me for about $1200 dollars, not including a root canal, which I had to go somewhere else to get "no insurance here". I went in thinking I was going to get my teeth cleaned and save money. Nevertheless, I got X-rays, no cleaning, instead of a Sonic brush, I got a ridiculous manual 50cent Colgate tooth brush. I could sued them for false advertisement, they were nice, but it comes with a high over priced service. Not sure I want to go back here. read more

I was extremely nervous about getting dental work done, but Dr. Hoover was able to get me through it... I'd like to say I was at ease, but that would be a lie. I'm probably never going to be at ease with metal pokey things and drills in my mouth. I love that they were able to show me the spots they were working on with the camera on a TV screen and the full explanation of her processes, including the why. The insurance lady, Connie, was a true professional. I was given an accurate estimate and never felt like I was getting the run around. I have had a couple of bad experiences at different dentists around Austin, but when I visited Dr. Hoover's office all of my worries were put to rest. It is a nice, clean office, with updated equipment. The staff is very professional and Dr. Hoover is very friendly. They will not try to talk you into anything you don't need, and want your experience to be as positive as possible. Went in for a free exam. Showed my insurance when I arrived in case I needed more done. My insurance covers 2 free cleanings a year, free exams and xrays. When they were done I was handed a bill and told to pay. Asked y and was told that the xrays they did weren't the free ones my insurance covered. But I was never asked if I wanted to upgrade and pay for the all-around x-rays. They also said that the cleaning cost more than what my insurance would cover but I was not made aware of that either. And they even charge me more for the exam which I was told was going to be free before I even showed up they said my insurance didn't pay enough for the cost of their exam. So my opinion of this place is they do provide a good service but they overcharged and then they don't even tell you about it and just hit you with a bill at the end of your visit. I will not be returning here. And when I got their bill and my insurances copy I noticed I wad overcharged by 28.87. And still have yet to receive my overpayment check. So yeah this place is a scam. I forgot to mention that I actually went into this dentist office to get my teeth bonded because they said they do bonding. But after the dentist came in and he said no I will not buy those I need to do crowns on them. One tooth has a corner chipped off of it why would they need to do crowns aren't i a paying customer that I get what I want and what I've come here for? I've had the same tooth bonded twice in 23 years for the same problem. Now this office is money hungry and wants to grind my teeth down to nothing and charge me for a crown which I don't want. To be honest, this place is crook even though people here are nice. They over charge with add on. Normally, I just have a regular cleaning and it does not cost me anything at other places (between $60 to $90 if you don't have insurance). ABOUT SMILE charge the insurance and then charge me for $127 for a regular cleaning. What is the purpose for having insurance? So be aware. read more

I went here for a cleaning since I got a groupon, and I was super impressed. It's a busy place, but I waited no more than 2 minutes before I was ushered back into a private room for my cleaning. I opted out of x-rays and went for just the cleaning. LINDA was my hygienist, and she was AMAZING!!!! I highly recommend asking for her. She's had many years of experience and it shows in her gentle, yet detailed work. She took plenty of time to hand-clean my teeth (didn't use the pesky loud ultrasonic doodad) and was very thorough. She was pleasant to talk to, and very knowledgable. The doctor came in later to check on the work and they took detailed pictures of my teeth to show me up on a screen which showed my old metal fillings from when I was a kid. They suggested I eventually replace them (metal not healthy, yet they were still solid), but I never felt pressured to do this. I have gone here quite a number of times and have had work done. The wait in the chair is ridiculous. This is every single time I have gone. Also I am always sent off to a different dentist to get a second opinion to see if she can even do the work. Then I NEVER here back from them. The first time it happened the specialist I went to see asked me why I was there? Really? you tell me? Last time I went the billing said my Insurance was used up for the year and it was just renewed of which I informed her and of course it was the insurance providers fault. Everyone can hear everything as they are talking to you above all the noise. No privacy what so ever. The dentist finally comes to me and asked about my insurance and I am like yeah you heard that two people away. I said "No my insurance is fine!" This place is ran like an assembly line of patients and although to be fair I have never seen Dr. Hoover, but the other dentist she employs. No one has ever once offered me advice on dental care i.e teeth cleaning etc. It's just in and out and sorry you had to wait (forever). read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Hoover/Dr. Lane for over 5 years. I feel really lucky that I was able to find them. I had not been to a dentist for several years prior to moving to Austin and my teeth/mouth was in need of a major tune up. Over past few years they have worked with me, and yes - I've had to go through getting couple of crowns, some extractions, and most recently an implant, (with and without insurance) but I never felt pressured in making those decisions, and have never had any problem in the quality of the work. I am so pleased with the staff's treatment and the personal professionalism of both Dr. Hoover and Dr. Lane. Especially when I've heard some sad stories from friends and co-worker about their dentist. Over time the staff has remained consistent that I feel more that they are my friends, then just people who work in the dentist's office. Dr. Hoover and Dr. Lane are the best! One of my life long fears was that I would have to get dentures one day (too young) like my mother did, and now I know, under their care - that is not going to happen! read more

This dentist is absolutley amazing. The entire staff is extremely friendly. There doesn't seem to be a lot of turnover.... I get to see the same smiling faces every time I go. They take the time to ask about my family, including our interests. They have state of the art technology. I get to see what the doctor sees. Crowns are done in ONE visit. No more multiple visits and dealing with temporary crowns etc. I hated the dentist... the wait time does not seem any different then any other dr. office.
