A friendly, cosy place, a short walk from the Abbey Road studios in Nugent Place. Great coffee and food. Highly recommended.

I tried an iced latte and carrot cake. The Carrot cake different than I have had before and made with maybe a white buttercream frosting? Espresso shots were soapy to me. I do know brew method they use, or water type m. But, I am also realizing England has great tea. I have yet to find great coffee with good extraction. We're quite proud of our coffee scene, and Butter Bakery could beat out most of the options in Portland. I had an oat milk latte and an americano, plus a few food items. Let's start with the americano. Now, I'll admit, I'm not the most skilled barista. I have some sense of how to pull a shot of espresso, but I'm not brilliant at it. With that as context: I do not exaggerate when I say there was more of that delicious creamy head on the americano than I've managed on some straight shots I've pulled. The espresso roast was subtle and sweet -- I waited too long to write this review, so I couldn't cite precise notes, but this is definitely a roast I could enjoy sipping on and slowly analyzing, while still being very approachable. The americano was perhaps a tiny hair more diluted than I would have liked, but it didn't quite reach "watery" either. I choose to see this as a deliberate choice to further open up the profile of the espresso. The oat latte was expertly foamed, with the right amount of oat milk so as not to overwhelm the espresso. It was on the dry side, almost a cappuccino, which is exactly what I prefer in a latte (if I wanted a cortado, I'd ask for a cortado). I don't know which oat milk they use, but it was sweet and creamy and simple and complemented the espresso beautifully. There's also a food menu that, while not hugely extensive, is packed full of gems. I very much enjoyed the pesto mozzarella tomato panini with extremely its fresh ingredients. It's about the size you'd expect for a cafe panini, and thus a bit more expensive than I'm comfortable with, but I'll chalk that up to the location -- compared with other local options, Butter Bakery Bar and Cafe is absolutely a contender for a budget lunch. Lastly, I'll just mention: I did not try the Mediterranean mains options, so I can't speak to their quality, but seeing things like mezze on a cafe menu is a nice change of pace.

It's not that the place looks so charming (it doesn't) but rather, the sweets displayed in the window look so irresistible. I waltzed in for Vanilla Flan (£4.30; more like firm custard in a crust, very good) then sat there long enough to notice that some of the savory offerings began to look very good too. This is how I wound up eating lunch in reverse. After the Flan I went on to share a personal-sized Mushroom Pizza (with ham; £5) and a Salade Goat Cheese (£12) which was different than what I'd expected. Rather than placing fresh goat cheese into the salad itself, the cheese was warmed atop sliced toasts, then laid around the salad. Did I mention there was a ton of goat cheese? There was. Between that and the English Bacon liberally topping the salad, this was the richest goat cheese salad I'd ever had and I couldn't come close to finishing the cheese and toasts. Luckily, the salad itself was quite good and, featuring a Dijon Vinaigrette, quite French inspired. I can't really recommend anyone consume so much rich food in one sitting but I can certainly recommend a visit to Maison Ruget. It's an unassuming little cafe producing some very good sweet and savory offerings and perfect for a casual lunch.

When you walk in it's overwhelming because everything looks so good. I was only ordering for myself, and it was a cluster deciding what to get. I went with an almond croissant and then also a blueberry muffin for later. It's the kind of thing where you want to order one of everything. Trust me. The almond croissant was very good. I really enjoyed it. I won't say it was the best I've ever had, but it was definitely up there. I usually do a standard butter croissant and I didn't because I was so overwhelmed with how good everything looked and wanting to try something more. In hindsight, I probably should have tried the butter croissant because I bet it would have been amazing. A friend tried some small cookies and I was able to sample those. They were also great. The blueberry muffin was also very tasty although it probably would have been better if I didn't wait 12 hours to eat it! Overall, you should come here and order a bunch of stuff. There's really no other way around it. I do feel that a place like this should have exceptional coffee as well. I got a flat white and it was only just okay The set up for coming in and ordering and then needing to move outside so you don't feel like you're crowding the register while you wait for your coffee drink is a little bit of a mess. They should have a better flow here or if they're going to have coffee have it off to the side or something. But it's really all about the pastry here and that's the star. The coffee is kind of and after thought anyway. Definitely check Ottolenghi out if you're in the area!

Second- The food- wonderful. As an American, I'm used to more bold flavors. Bothe the sausage roll and the beef and Guinness pie have more subtle (less overwhelmingly spicy) flavors. I liked both very much for their subtle flavors. Third- The sweets were very good. The carrot cake and the pecan pie both had less sugar than the U.S.- which I like- I am not an overly sugar fan. Both desert were absolutely perfect. I would recommend this shop in a second to my friend- this is a great representation of classic English food and sweets. But to my enemies I would suggest eating Thailand food across the street at the "English Pib".

This little shop is a lovely take-out pâtisserie and bakery, selling items that became famous in her restaurant (Clarke's) across the street. It's expensive (this is Kensington, after all) but the quality of the breads, pastries and savory pies is high. My mum (who lives in Cambridge) requires that I pick up the double-crusted chicken pie every Christmas, on my way from Heathrow to Cambridge (!). So I have to carry it on the Underground and on BritRail, then in a cab. That's called loyalty to a pie! My only complaint is that there's no place to sit down. In their old location, you could meet a friend for coffee. So I just put my pastry in a bag and duck into a side street to eat my treasure - far from the scornful glares of the Kensington Church Street crowd!
