Gail's has a wide variety of freshly baked pastries as well as a few made to order items like the baked eggs that come with a side of sourdough sticks. My husband and I ordered a ham and cheese croissant and baked eggs for breakfast and it was plenty for the two of us. I was a little surprised to see that they charge a separate price if you're going to dine in versus if you're going to take them out! I've never experienced that before. Cute place in Notting Hill. The coffee machine was broken in the morning so that was unfortunate. The 3 girls working were not friendly at all. It was empty with just one family dining in. The girl who speaks Spanish said she was glad the machine broke so they could get a break lol I wonder if it really broke. Only hot options were tea and hot chocolate. Our baked eggs were good. BE CAREFUL!!!! Thieves LOVE this place. We reported the crime at the local police station, he told us iPhones and wallets are reportedly stolen at this café multiple times on a daily basis. A medium-skinned male (probably Romanian), age 25-35, came to our table holding a flyer in his hand and started to speak "non-English" to us. We got confused for a few seconds. The thief used the flyer in his hand to cover the iPhone that was on the table. After 15 seconds of the fake conversation, the iPhone was GONE!!!! We told the store clerk immediately after the crime happened, she honestly couldn't have cared less. No sorry it happened ... no "let me check CCTV video", no nothing. She just smiled. Food is okay. A local gave us the tip that Gail's was a good place to stop for a bite while visiting the Portobello Market. And, so it was. Of course being Market day it was absolutely full of people but the staff was working hard to get orders made quickly. We opted to take ours to go but there is seating both on the main and lower levels. I had the best sausage roll of the trip here - wrapped in nice pastry and full of well seasoned sausage. It's such a busy restaurant in Portobello Market. We had to wait in the line to get a table. It's a typical British lunch cafe. Most people ordered sandwich and soups here. So we ordered the same thing. The sandwich is so tasty with goat cheese and grilled vegetables. The cream broccoli soup is so rich. But the sandwich size is too small. I have never seen this small size of sandwich in my life. Maybe I'm getting used to US size. The service is very fast. The sandwich plus soup is around $20. It's pricey for lunch per my standard. Maybe it's a seasonal London price. We asked for WIFI password. The waiter said their manager doesn't allow to give their WIFI password out. I was so disappointed. read more

They have the BEST granola!!!! It is so perfectly made and a great combination of oats, seeds, nuts, and dried fruit. It's so much better than any other granola I've tried in the UK. We tried the breakfast and luckily because it was a bank holiday they continued to serve breakfast after 12pm. On normal days, they stop serving breakfast at 12pm. We tried the english muffin served with fried eggs, grilled tomato, bacon as well as the english muffin served with fried eggs, portobello mushroom, spinach and cheese. At last a coffee and sandwich shop where nothing comes in layers of plastic wrapping. This is a large airy coffee shop in Notting Hill's Portobello market that unlike the many stalls outside offers tables and chairs to enjoy the cuisine. The food tastes fresh and warm, not like the refrigerated soggy sandwiches most busy Londoners are subjected to. The coffee is really good and if you're not a carb-lover, the mango and mozzarella salad is delicious. It sounds risky but in the words on Pumbaa from The Lion King, it is Slimy but Satisfying. It's worth noting, when you go in, head straight for the walkway on the right, it's a one-way restaurant and you don't want to look like a first-timer here, this is one very cool coffee shop. read more

Sandwiches: pretty goddamn awesome (I highly recommend the roast beef and horseradish) Grapefruit juice: chunky McChunks, but fresh and delicious. The food here is great. My review is just based on the customer service. I was visiting London for a month and stumbled upon this quaint bakery. I had never been in before so wasn't aware of the drill. I.e you tell a staff member what items you'd like and they box it for you - when of course you can grab their attention. Since the take out boxes and napkins are right next to the food, the most basic of minds would think its a 'help your self' thing. But no. I grabbed a box and attempted to hygienic ally grab a pastry as to which some old witch who worked there ran over to me as if I'd just set the place on fire. She proceeded to scold me in front of all the other customers. My review shouldn't put you off this place or its food. Being fully prepared to spend a few pounds (after reading the yelp reviews), I came to Gail's judging the breakfast joint solely on food and service. Both were excellent. My boyfriend and I split a breakfast sandwich complete with 2 eggs sunny-side-up, roasted tomato, herbed cottage cheese, and thickly-cut bacon. We also shared a fresh-fruit salad/granola yogurt parfait that was equally scrumptious. This was washed down with a hot cappuccino that was heavenly. I was in this bakery with my family on Friday afternoon (19th Nov) It was an awful experience. Two stranger people approached to our table during our lunch 10 min from each other, the second one was really intrusive and started touching my brother and our things/food on the table. Nobody of the store helped us to send him away. In the end we discovered that he stole 2 mobiles from my brother. They are fake needy people, actually they are thieves around there to take your personal belonging. Be aware when you are sit also indoor, there is no security at all and nobody care about costumers in this bakery. The manager that was in charge that afternoon said that they had staff shortage for this reason they had no one in the floor, but I think that is not a good reason and it is an evident sign that they do not care about costumers experience in general and their security in particular. We are very disappointed about service management overall. I do not recommend this place at all!!!! read more

Gail's Bakery is busy and for a good reason. For good bread, cakes and coffee this is the place to go on Portobello Road. It all comes at a price and portions aren't huge but I would say it's worth it. Their apple tart is my favourite but with the wide selection on offer I'm sure there is something to everyone's taste. Everything at Gail's is made fresh and you can certainly taste this (and smell it in the store). The trend of purist food is going on for some time now but Gail's is in my opinion still on top of the game. The biggest problem is perhaps trying to get a place to sit at some days when the market is on but to my own surprise I was last week even able to get tables for a larger group. Other downside is that Gail's has no toilet. This may sound like an unimportant detail but for the type of place that it is with a full lunch offering I do consider this to be a shortcoming that needs to be fixed. read more

I was hoping to get to Books For Cooks during my recent holiday in London - sadly I failed to realize that they are closed on Mondays. But I had already nosed about the surrounding area online, and, struck with a bout of insomnia on Sunday night, headed out with my sweetheart at a little after six on Monday morning for breakfast at Gail's. What can I say? I am charmed by bread purists and I love that they make their breads fresh every day with no preservatives. Plus I'd been up for four hours and was ravenous. They open at seven but we were the only ones there, which was kind of nice and peaceful in the still of morning when they were still receiving deliveries. My omnivorous sweetheart got the omelette sandwich ("very good") and a soy latte ("so-so"); I got an English muffin with a bunch of fresh sliced tomato and a bonus surprise wee pot of strawberry jam and a soy mocha. The jam was very good and a most welcome and sweet surprise on a chilly morning. I was surprised that the English muffins were twice as fat as English muffins in the states and with none of the vaunted nooks and crannies, but never fear, they are tasty. The staff was also super, super nice and didn't mind making me something off-menu*, but don't assume they'll necessarily do it for you as I am very charming and have a most winning smile. Be nice if you ask for something not listed! My sweetheart and I wandered off down Portobello road - empty and delightful so early in the morning - with pleasantly full bellies, and headed back to our flat, to nap, perchance to dream of jam and cookbooks. *vegetarian-friendly but not vegan-friendly unless you are very charming and have a most winning smile, too. read more

This part of Portobello is now spoilt for choice when it comes to wonderful bread. With Mr Christian's and the Elgin Grocer just round the corner (plus a great bread stall on the market itself), Gail's is the latest addition to bakers heaven. What was last a modern art gallery in its last incarnation has been turned into one of those new-style bakery/tea shop places where you can either buy your breakfast to take home or relax over a cup of coffee and one of their delicious cakes or pastries. The food alone deserves five stars, but is let down by the rather slow service. I went on a very quiet Tuesday afternoon (after the main lunchtime rush) and despite four (!) people behind the counter who were non-stop rearranging the wares, had to wait ages at the till and even longer at my table before any food materialised. Mind you, during the week the clientele seems to be mainly made up of yummy mummies. For fresh baked goods, I go to Gail's. This friendly neighborhood bakery is cute and chic and it houses some of the finest baked goods in St. John's Wood. They have everything from muffins to cheesecake, to freshly baked bread. The place is small and intimate, you'll want to grab your treat to go as there is not really much space to sit down and enjoy it inside. The front window display is magical as it reveals an array of baked goods that are made fresh each day. The employees are extremely kind. For a cafe, I am not impressed. First of all the coffee wasn't that great, but they have nice bakeries. Very spicy prices for what they offer. Wireless connection not working, I've been here before and it was the same situation. They should sort that out.
