What a fabulous find not far from our hotel. They open early - around 7am - and the scrumptious baked goods are just off-the-charts good. It's like a collection of food porn that just keeps getting better as they haul platter after platter of freshly baked items up from downstairs....scones (oh, the sour cherry/chocolate!), almond & chocolate croissants, scores of fresh breads, muffins, cakes, on and on!! The tea was quite good, and my husband loved his latte. The scone with clotted cream and jam is just excellent! The atmosphere is very energetic inside and yet peaceful at their outside tables, And if you're lucky, you'll meet Reg, the gorgeous black Lab, who comes daily for his warm croissant. No joke! On a recent visit to London, we were fortunate to find this WONDERFUL bakery, only a couple of blocks from our hotel. We only wish we had found it earlier in our brief visit. I am partial to cinnamon rolls, but in the U.S., it is difficult for me to find such rolls with enough cinnamon and not drowned in icing. European bakeries seemingly skip the icing, but GAIL's uses huge amounts of cinnamon and then dusts the entire exterior of the pastry with more cinnamon. The dough is thin and moist and, with the generous amounts of cinnamon, heavenly! My friend has a weakness for chocolate croissants and he wasn't disappointed either. His had generous amounts of chocolate, supported by flaky, buttery pastry. Between the two of us, we were literally exclaiming how great this bakery is. The shop itself is quite pleasant, with helpful staff and comfortable seating, excellently located close to many of the tourist attractions that draw people to London. Buckingham Palace is only a few blocks away. I don't get to London often, but I truly will likely let my hotel be selected in order to be close to this particular bakery -- that's how wonderful it is! read more

Gail's Bakery is pretty darn good. Came here on a weekday morning and was not disappointed. It was already busy full of locals and to me that's an indication of a place with good food. The aroma of freshly baked goods encompassed me as I decided on what I wanted to order - absolutely delightful. They have a lot of things to go as well as sit down items and some seating in the back. I ordered the blueberry pancakes for dine in as well as a small honey cake to go. The service was fast and prompt, and the atmosphere of the cafe was really nice. The pancakes tasted quite amazing and looked great too. Soft on the inside, slightly crisp on the outside - but not burnt at all! The blueberry compote and fresh cream tasted amazing too! We wanted a fuss free breakfast and decided to try this bakery. Upon arrival it seemed a popular choice. Counter service is to the left as soon as you walk in, and you sit towards the back(more seating downstairs and two small bistro style tables outside). We ordered two oat lattes and 2 egg soufflé rolls (my fiancé wanted to try the spinach and feta pastry too, so we got one of those as well). We paid between £25 and £26. The food was tasty (portions are on the smaller side for the price point) , good quality but no culinary epiphany (maybe I expected a bit more for the price point). I would not go back simply because I now absolutely stink like food! Which is not great when you are on your way to the Tate ... Although I would consider buying a sweet pastry to take away... I gave it 4 stars because it was good, just not good enough to make me want more or rush back soon. A plus is they accept Amex. read more

I went for a coffee chat with a friend in the neighbourhood, and we absolutely adored the place. We both had cappuccino, which was just appropriately milky and frothy. My friend also had a chocolate cookie, which was almost like a brownie and perfectly tasty. They had a great range of pastries, bread and brunch menu as well. Ambience was cosy and perfect for a coffee chat or even a study session. They had a reasonable amount of seating space, which seemed to extend to the lower floor as well. Service was very good. When I first came across Gail's, I was pretty skeptical that it was the place for me: anywhere that charges upwards for 3 quid for a brownie would have to be pretty darned impressive to get my repeat custom. Needless to say, while I don't pop in on a daily basis, Gail's has certainly become where I head for my loaves of bread on a semi-regular basis, and the occasional sweet treat when I need an indulgent pick-me-up of some kind. Particular recommendations are the seeded sourdough (you can have the loaves sliced if you ask at the counter, and you can get a little loyalty card to stamp for a free loaf if you buy enough of them), and the pecan brownie, which has all the sickly indulgence of a brilliant lump of gooey chocolate meets a cake. Everything in there is pretty expensive, but I've also never yet eaten anything there that I regretted purchasing, which is a sign of some rather good baking indeed! read more

I could have eaten four of the small salami sandwiches so I am taking one star off just because the sandwich was so small. But five stars for the taste and especially appreciated the softness of the bread. The price was $6.38 USD for the sandwich and the tea. Not bad. Inside it is a brick wall cafe with light hardwood floors and lots of natural lighting. Easy music. Outside, upstairs and downstairs seating available. Upon entering, you see all their delicious pastries and it was so hard to pick what to get from their great variety. Got the plain scone with clotted cream & jam, and their blueberry pancakes. Went early to avoid crowds and woman entered with mask around her neck: pointed this out to staff who said nothing so I politely pointed this out to her and she became abusive, shouting and wagging her finger as I walked past to leave the shop. Her belief is that if someone is meant to catch the virus they will. I was shocked, upset and concerned that the staff said nothing and then served her. My partner and I were looking for a breakfast place close to us in Pimlico and stumbled across this gem. We arrived promptly when they opened so we had no line to deal with. The owner and staff were super friendly and inviting. We ordered coffee, hot chocolate, two different scones, smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast, and French toast with fruit compote. Coffee: Good coffee, not much more to say Hot chocolate: Amazing! We could really taste the rich dark chocolate and it paired well with the bread. The scones were brought out first and they were delicious. Literally the best scones I've ever had, I can see why the British love their scones. They came straight out of the oven too since they just finished making them. I recommend the blueberry/chocolate one. Smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast: This was the weakest part of the breakfast. The bread was very thick and I just felt the flavors didn't work well together. I was expecting more for £8 (11 USD). French toast with fruit compote: Delicious. The french toast was cooked perfectly and all the whole dish was very cohesive. I would definitely recommend this from the breakfast menu. It was maybe a little sweet for breakfast, but it tasted great. Atmosphere of this place was very comfortable and welcoming. At the end of our vacation in the United Kingdom we spent four nights in the Pimlico neighborhood of London. The hotel we were staying at offered a free English breakfast each morning. We were tired of that being the only option to start our day so we decided to look for a bakery near our hotel. Just around the corner we discovered Gail's Bakery and were so impressed with the bakery and breakfast options and with the ambiance of the place that we ate there twice and purchased two breakfasts-to-go! The food is great! They offer a wide variety of baked goods (breads, sweet breads, scones, crumbles, pancakes, quiches, etc. both sweet and savory) and creative sandwich-type choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The staff is very friendly and the service is quick. There is seating outside, on the ground floor, and in the basement. You know a bakery is great when you walk in and it is clear that large numbers of locals frequent the place! I have had bad experiences at this branch before and after I wrote a review on google I have decided to try it again after 6 mounts. disappointment is the word I would use. I have been to the branch twice. First time I was wearing my motorcycle gear so the attendant assumed I was their to collect some order. Very harsh treatment. no problem at all to be confused with a courier. My issue is that if they treat this hard working people with no courtesy as they were not human (just wondering). second visit - again I was using my helmet . I was not greeted with courtesy as the other clients. No problem so far since I am a very straight forward person myself. the problem is that I was given the latte I ordered in a tinny cup. When I asked what happened the person serving just said they run out of the normal size ones. I was not asked if I was ok with that. I was not explained if I would pay any less for half of the quantity of what I ordered. I totally understand people being tired or a bit distracted and I know it first hand since I work with thenpublic. nevertheless, disregard is a very different thing. They seem to work as we the customers were there to serve them. And if you are working on deliveries make sure you dress properly before you enter the shop. And always remember. the correct form of address to their staff is "Your Majesty". Dont brake the protocol. almost 7 quid for a small chocolate cake and half latte. Nothing else to say...I'll probably support the smaller businesses around like this Italian on the corner beside the beauty parlours. every time I go there the service is excellent and they are so nice all the time. read more

I ordered everything for takeaway, so I didn't see much of the seating area. It looked cozy and relaxed, at a glance.
