What a neat little place! Just off the street down the arcade is a little tea and coffee shop. The place is small and gets crowded. The chairs reminded me of being at school but it didnt deter me from having a great coffee, pot of tea and a pastry. Friendly staff and unique interior. Outside tables too. read more

I think this shop had a very good run because of committed owners but a random visit on a Friday afternoon was shocking in a couple of ways. 1) A neurotic server loudly running up and down the stairs both to the customers and down into the kitchen. Visibly frustrated at guests, the staff, and bleeding out the neuroticism to everyone else. Ruined the atmosphere and the first moment of peace for everyone arrived when she took her break and left. 2) Inattentive, poor service. On more than one occasion customers conducted an informal relay service (perhaps we could have set up a semaphore station) to tell waitstaff that customers outside needed their attention. Now, the good news: good coffee and at least one worker who manages to be a balance to the neurotic and stressed-out server. Also, delicious food. It's also in a nice, quiet corner of Hampstead. But may not be worth the hike. The best reviews are from months and years ago, and that's telling. read more

Slow service. The staff seems to be either extremely unorganized or totally oblivious to the needs of their customers. This is a very small cafe with very limited seating and small menu. There's really no excuse not to be running this like a well oiled machine. It makes no difference if it's busy, honestly. That's no excuse, but of course was their excuse. You would NEVER make it in the states. We sat outside while dirty plates stay for long periods of time on the tables. No urgency to pick up as new patrons were seating themselves waiting for tables to be cleared and for their orders to be taken. Why didn't we leave? I don't know. It's like one of those situations where you know you should , BUT you just want to see what's going to happen. Is it really this bad? Yes, yes it is. We ordered 1 PIECE of toast and 2 teas. The toast literally took 25 minutes. Really? For a piece of toast? Nothing even on the toast but butter. Butter that had been fully melted on the toast like it had been sitting for a while, and a pool of it on the plate. Jam was served in a jar that I apply myself. The server drops off toast and starts to take off. I flag her down, I don't say anything about the toast because forget it who has time for that now, but I do ask about our teas which takes even more time to receive. We should have had our teas first and been waiting for our toast, but she obviously forgot. So she tries to blame it on the barista taking no responsibility for forgetting as the server. She finally brings the teas and takes off again fast leaving no spoons to stir with. I had to use the butter knife I used for my toast to stir my tea. I think she was just uncomfortable with us at this point because she basically forgot about us. It was obvious. The worst of it was the teapots were absolutely filthy. Disgusting with residue in the spouts and residue on the outside. Looks like they hadn't been properly washed for ages ..just literally reuse without thoroughly cleaning for next customer. Completely unsanitary and left a weird after taste in tea. I couldn't take more than a couple sips. Such a disappointment considering the area and high prices. Never again. read more

The number one place to get coffee in Hampstead - no question! There are tons of reasons this place is busy, from the delicious food to the perfectly brewed coffee to the friendly staff. Don't be fooled by the other cafes in the area - this is the only place to go if you appreciate good coffee. Each of their baristas is properly trained. The menu is short & sweet with a daily option of sweet & savoury muffins, a frittata & a salad. They also serve the most delicious banana bread I've found in London. On the table you can sample a range of relish, jams & their homemade peanut butter. It can be super busy in here but if you hit the right time you can grab the armchair or sofa. There's no better place to sit with a coffee & a book. On weekdays there's usually a few macs dotted around so they don't mind you working if you're fair about ordering while there. The wifi is good though plugs are scarce. As you can expect from a place with younger (and dare I say hipster-ish) staff the music is usually pretty good. While not the cheapest cafe it's definitely worth it for the good quality food & coffee. It always blows my mind that some of the sub-standard places in Hampstead are busy when this place is just around the corner! read more

Try their incredible coffee, daily salad, ham & cheese croissant, scrambled eggs with roasted tomatoes (amazing) & let's not forget... the top of the list... the carrot cake! It can't be beaten. It's actually why it's called Ginger & White :) Yes service can be slow during busy times but they try super hard & are always friendly. We come here at least once a week. I'm seeing a lot of "unpretentious" being thrown about in previous reviews, which is something I have to seriously disagree with. 'Spose it's my own fault for hanging out in NW3, though. Irritatingly bad jazz music, oh-so-Hampstead clientele (Do you really need a £500 handbag, lady?), overpriced tiny lattes and a brownie that my boyfriend recalls as "tasting weak and smelling like flowery handsoap". And did I mention that they charge you 30p if your card purchase is under £10? The only redeeming factor is that the coffee was, infact, pretty good...despite costing too much. Also, admittedly.... it may have been a teeny, tiny bit refreshing to see some very British treats on the menu after hanging out in aussie cafes so much. If we ever go back, we'll get the fancy toast and marmalade. That looked nice. I'm giving it 3 stars, but it's more like a 2.5, really. Damn your lack of half stars, Yelp. read more

Ginger & White's slogan is "We don't do Grande," which I found to be cute and clever. This little coffee joint is adorably tucked away in the backstreets of Hampstead High Street. This coffee shop scores major points on decor, as it is very tastefully furnished and decorated. They have a great weekly and weekend menu with pastries and nibbles which looked quite tasty, however I didn't get the chance to try anything to eat. I simply ordered an iced coffee, which was very good. I love a strong coffee and the taste was delicious and bold. The outdoor seating area is really pleasant for the nice summer days. I recommend strolling down Perrin's Court with a book and enjoying a coffee at Ginger and White. Hopefully next time I visit I will be able to try out the yummy looking treats along with my bold coffee. read more

Such a shame that I didn't take some photos because this place is oh-so cute! And I can't believe no other Yelper has found this little gem. As I wandered the High Street looking for a good place for a latte and a bite and a place where I could camp out alone and read my book and went by all the places mentioned on Yelp, but lines were long and spaces were few and I just wasn't feeling the vibe. So I wandered down a little alley and stumbled onto Ginger and White. Outdoor seating, a large table and smaller tables (although it is a very small space) and a great counter facing big windows for people-watching. Coffee by Square Mile Roasters, great tunes in the backgound, and delicious pastries. I enjoyed homemade granola with yogurt, honey and fresh roasted plums. Yum, yum! read more

I must say I'm always a little disappointed when I go here. I've been about 4 times and I haven't been impressed with this little cafe. I keep going back because the other reviews on yelp are soooo good I keep thinking I must have had a bad coffee experience. However with 4 to 0 ratio of experiences I'm going to struggle to go back. I originally thought I went at a busy time and that's why the service was slow but I've gone when I'm the only one in the cafe (early morning) and the service was just the same. Hampstead is not short on options for brunch and coffee, but this is my first choice every time. Tucked away in an alleyway off the Main Street, they serve exceptionally good coffee, baked goods and brunch/lunch options. Service is really great and I love their playlists. A nice blend of alternative and old classics played at a relaxed volume that makes it easy to read if you are on your own, or a chilled out place to hang out with friends. The shop itself only seats about 30-40 people inside and out, so be prepared to wait on the weekends read more

The only downside are the amount of baby trams and that it is crowded (I guess other people like it too). The breakfast food I have had here is good. Ginger & White proud themselves of their British artisan food and quite rightfully so. However, as much as they might try to stir away from the French and Italian boutique coffee shops that crowd London, they can't deny that there is a flavor of Europe in most of their menu. And it works out just fine... The weekend specials are quite creative and the portions were well served. Being a die-hard fan of bacon, I tried the Croissant with melted cheddar and bacon and was in for a pleasant surprise! The three levels of bacon appeased my hunger levels while the subtle flavor of the cheese balanced out the sweetness of the croissant. Quite an impressive combination that I had never heard before. The coffee is strong with an original blend that I hadn't tried before - it supports the food quite well. Same can be said about the orange juice: fresh from the tree. The shop itself is quite small so I am guessing that if you stop by at lunch time you gonna have a hard time getting a seat. Not ideal for groups. There's a main center table that you will probably have to share with someone else - if you are looking for something more private and less communal then this is not the place for you. On the bright side, it is on a side street where cars are not allowed which makes it much quieter than the main streets of Hampstead Village just around the corner. There are also a couple of tables outside where you can enjoy a drink on a sunny afternoon. Overall, I quite liked the place. I am bit picky with my food so there weren't many options in the menu that I cared to try, but my croissant was great, the place was nice, the price was about right and to wrap it up, the staff is super friendly. Ginger & White have really earned the title of best coffee shop in Hampstead, even if it may be just an unofficial one it's a reality with the locals. At first it's a little difficult to find if you don't know the area, tucked up a skinny side road between the shops in the high street, but it's worth spending the extra few minutes hunting it out - you will be thankful you did! They serve breakfast and lunch here, along with a lovely range of cakes and pastries. The coffee is well brewed and while it may take a little longer to arrive on your table than you'd maybe like sometimes it's always worth the wait. The service is a little slow sometimes, as the small cafe does get extremely busy and you may even need to wait for a table on weekends, but they make up for it by being friendly and helpful. The egg and soldiers is my favourite item on the menu, served with little knitted wooly hat egg cosies and perfectly buttered toast 'soldiers', it's home comfort food at it's best. read more

Hip hip hooray for the recession! It means we finally get some decent independents in Hampstead / Belsize Park! That's my one major gripe about the UK, you can't swing a cat without hitting a Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Costa - whatever! Wherever you go, every high street is identical to the one before! So the big brands were not making their margins and decided to close shops, great! Coffee is really delicious! The interior is so much fun, with the big table to share in the middle and the two nooks you can hide in at the back. The staff are really nice, helpful, friendly and alert. (How many times have you been to a coffee shop chain to be confronted with the most absentminded barista - if you can call them that?) They aren't "there" yet with their cakes (which can be overly sweet). I haven't tried their sandwiches or salads. I am sure they will get "there" soon though. read more

The day had dawned to dust off the bike's winter coat and hit the roads to Hampstead Heath. Gorgeous. Finishing off our salads at Gail's on Hampstead High Street (mixed reviews from us, but the cake selection rocks), The Peanut Gallery and I decided a 2nd coffee of the day was in order. Enter Ginger and White. A staunchly British themed coffee shop, Ginger and White is set back from the main drag in a quiet little pedestrian laneway, Perrins Court. Inside is a big, communal table with crayons (or coloured pencils?) in the middle, suggesting a child friendly attitude that will likely be a selling point for some, but a roomful of childish shrieks and me should never meet before my morning coffee. All is overseen by a large Union Jack painting and a counter laden with cakes, pastries and biscuits. There's talk of salads and sandwiches also being available (like Northfield's Farm's roast beef with horseradish mayo and watercress on onion bread - oh my...), and all ingredients are apparently British and sourced direct from the farm. But we were there for the Square Mile coffee (currently the Spring brew - a blend from Brazil and Colombia). The flat white was smooth, caramel-y and strong, hitting all the right notes. Admittedly on the basis of only 1 visit at this stage, I have to rate the coffee right up there with that of all my favourite antipodean coffee shops of London. A freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice was also lovely. As far as I know, there are not too many options for a really great coffee in North West London. I don't hang out in Hampstead all that often, but when I do, I know where I'll be sipping my flattie. Thumbs up. read more

Great little spot. By little, I mean that for two reasons. The first, it isn't overflowing with an abundance of space, though that certainly adds to its charm. Secondly, everyone seems to have figured out that they make a mean cup of coffee and serve some fantastic food to match, so that means there is almost always a host of people occupying any of the available seats. But, if you don't mind sharing a table, or sitting at a window ledge, this could be one of the best spots to go in Hampstead. Set down a pedestrian road, which means you can watch the stream of Hampstead-ites and visitors (rather than the endless stream of cars headed up the hill), this is a great place to sit with the paper or a book. Good carrot cake and coffee, both of which are important to me. It is certainly worth stopping by (especially if you can steal an outside table on a sunny day). read more

I came to this place on the premise of other reviews and had an expectation that the service and food was good. The atmosphere was nice but I did not have the opportunity to test their food as they had forgotten our order. When questioned, they had lied to my face with the excuse of being a busy morning and mentioned they were plating our order. Clearly it wasn't as the patrons after us had received their food and was already into their meals while we were still waiting. Again, I cannot comment on their food but their service especially from the Australian lady was particular terrible. She needs to go back to a course on 101 customer engagement. read more

I'll keep this brief, as I've had just one fleeting encounter with this place but it was a cute little place off a small cobbled street in Hampstead. They've got a big communal table as well as smaller seats by the windows, etc, and really nice at-home style of decor that's appealing without being intrusive. All the food looked great, but unfortunately I can't speak too much of it, because I only had something small-- a muffin. It was fresh and delicious, and the entire package warrants at least a return trip. Easily accessible by subway, by the way, for anyone venturing into Hampstead for the purpose of visiting it. read more

Cute, friendly little cafe that serves all the essentials: coffee, tea, sandwiches, pastries and salads. For such a small space, it did have quite a bit of seating options, including a large communal table in the middle surrounded by single seating along the window for those just looking to sip coffee while reading the papers. My friend and I chose to sit outside under the heat lamps on a chilly Sunday morning, which was surprisingly pleasant. I had the roast beef and watercress sarnie on onion bread, a huge teapot-full of tea and a chocolate croissant. Everything was tasty and made with care. I really like this little place! I've been in London now for a 1 1/2 and they have the best espresso by far. I've tried everywhere in the neighborhood! I used to live in Seattle (USA) for a handful of years and became a bit of an espresso snob so I was quite glad to stumble upon them. They also have really good pastries and do a daily salad as well. Most of the staff is super friendly although there is one female cook this last Saturday that was pretty mean to this new girl that just started. It's quite awkward as a customer when you see this type of interaction because everybody needs to learn the ropes and attitude does not help. Anyway, everything else is spot on! Their coffee is certainly a cut above Starbucks and Costa but not as good as Shoreditch Grind near Old Street. I would have given then 4 stars but for the fact that they charge extra for using plastic. Sorry but in this day and age, a cool hip coffee joint shafting customers for using a card is just not cool. I used to travel to London three times a year for business. I would regularly arrive before 7am on Sunday mornings, when pretty much every establishment is closed for business and/or unavailable, including whatever hotel room I would call home for the next week. I found salvation and delight at Ginger & White, a charming, low-key, Sunday morning kind of coffee shop in Hampstead. They offer delicious coffee and fresh juices, simple but tasty breakfasts (I actually dream of their soft-boiled eggs with buttered soldiers!), and a low-key ambiance with good music and morning papers for you to enjoy. Coffee is very good as previous Qypers describe, but the service was extremely erratic. Arrived at around 1pm, it is a short menu; a number of things had run out. Do not expect a big breakfast, more like piece of cake, or cheese toasties. We ordered, first came the cheese and marmite muffin, very tasty, and then we waitedeventually (15min) had to go and ask for the rest of our order, they had forgotten. Then came the coffees, finally came the sausage sandwich. They had run out of baps, so we had it on bloomer. Bread was sliced too thin, a bit stale, and not warm, unacceptable at £6. Trying to pay was chaotic, will not be retuning. read more

Second, their space is warm and comfortable, and they move people in and out in an efficient, unhurried way. They have a nice square communal table which works well; you can talk to your neighbours if you want, or not. read more
