This café lives up to its name; Absolutely Bad Crepes, even still.
I wrote that review, which apparently has gained some fame amongst people that love this place, my roommate included (she didn't know I wrote it until I told her). It was because of her I ended up coming back, but it was mostly because she dragged me and offered to pay. We split a savory crepe and a sweet crepe, so I could "revise my opinion" of the place.
I noticed how a couple reviewers' on here raved about Magdalena's creperie in Fairhaven, and one asked if "anyone has ever tried a good crepe in their lifetimes". You don't have to be in the middle or upper class to enjoy a good quality crepe. I came back here with an open mind, and my roommate (who by the way hasn't been to Magdalena's) gobbled it up because I couldn't let the taste sit in my mouth, let alone my stomach.
The savory crepe we got was the Garlic Chicken Pesto. You know the feeling you get when you try a McDonalds chicken nugget for the first time, and you like it? But then you remember the movie Supersize Me, and how you're probably eating the eyes and the flab of the chicken instead of any actual meat, and as you look at the crisp golden edges you see that McDonalds is just hiding something revolting under a pretty crust? That's exactly how I felt with this crepe. The chicken was incredibly dry, the pesto was blah and the mozzarella cheese was greasy. The tomatoes were obviously not fresh (or tasted lack thereof) and the onions overclouded my taste buds with the pesto. Prisoners wouldn't be able to eat this crepe without wanting to throw it back up.
In comparison to another creperie, a place I am sick of because I ate so many of their crepes, Mt. Bakery; you can taste the delectable quality and even my roommate admits it's much better. And it's just one iota better because of the freshness, the crisp taste and how the flavors mend together perfectly. The Garlic Chicken Pesto crepe didn't even have the crepe batter going for it.
The sweet crepe we got, I was actually excited for. I thought, "well, I want to go through with this with an open mind. The savory crepes are obviously terrible, but what about the sweet?" So I ordered the Banana Crème Pie crepe. What a huge disappointment.
Let me get one thing straight - I have a sweet tooth like no other. I love my high-sugary high-sweet goodies. But this was not only sweet, it was blah. How does that even happen?! It's like the flavors thought they were in love with each other but ended up being disgusted by the others' past regressions. Like a terrible Jersey Shore episode (keep in mind I only saw one episode and never again).
These aren't crepes; these are cruel prison dishes. Prices are mediocre for quantity, expensive though for quality. The only way you can get away with charging based on quality of the crepes are by charging EVERY crepe no more than $3 or $4. I know the café has expenses, like profit margins, employees, cost of food, etc. But their food cost must be maximum 10% of $4 - 40 cents - per serving to be generous.
There is only ONE GOOD THING about this café, and that is the customer service. I see how bad reviews get responses from the owners and that's admirable. I also like how friendly the people in the kitchen are and how nice they are. The café improved in terms of payment options since my last review, and is better with service for sure, but I still feel like I am going to vomit all day every time I just take a small bite of their food. I cannot recommend this place to anyone, especially an enemy. I wouldn't even send Kim Jong Un here, if it meant that there'd be actual poison in the crepe and he'd die instantly. While he would certainly deserve it, I couldn't send anyone here on purpose. The food is disgusting. read more
