One morning I woke up and remembered it was that time of year to renew my vehicle registration. When I looked at the paper, I realized I just MIGHT have procrastinated for a little too long. My registration was due in 2 days (for the money saver option), and it was the first time my car needed pass a smog test since I bought it. When I had stopped by the auto shop close to my house, they told me they do not do smog tests however they usually send people to AA Smog. A customer who was in the auto shop waiting room told me "I always use AA Smog, they are the absolute best." In my head I was thinking "yeah ok, what can be so great about a smog test. Any smog place can smog a car." So, I thanked everyone for the suggestion and decided to head on down to AA Smog Test Only. It was a little difficult to find at first however once I was approaching the driveway they had a large easy to read sign with an arrow pointing where to go. Once I parked and made my way inside. There were a few people there waiting for their cars and I began to think "Uh oh, this place seems kind of busy." As I approached the front desk, I was greeted by a gentleman (I believe the owner) who was very friendly. He told me there was not an open spot for at least 2 hours. He said he might be able to fit me in sooner if I would like to wait. I told him unfortunately I had to go run some errands and asked if he might have any appointments later in the day. He said if I wanted to come back at 3, he could have me in and out. So, I booked the appointment and went about my day. So, I was done with all my errands plus it was over 100 degrees outside, so I was just done with wanting to do anything else. As I pulled in it looked like there would be no wait. I parked my car and went inside at about 2:45. The man again greeted me and asked for my keys. He then proceeded to go get my car started. The waiting room wasn't very big however it was comfortable. He had a little window AC going so the room was very nice and cool (temperature wise). He even had a small area for kids. It wasn't much but I would LOVE it if my kids were younger and I brought them. I hardly had time to really check everything out before the man came in and told me he was all done and that I was good to go. I was impressed at how fast (maybe 15-20 minutes) the process. The total for what I paid was $75 which I'm not sure is normal pricing. I believe I have seen some of those coupons you get in the mail for $5-$10 off. I was happy to pay it with how fast he got me in and out. Sorry for such a lengthy but I would highly recommend this business. Great owner, great service and you really are in and out. read more

I needed a smog check to renew my registration. My vehicle passed the emissions test, but failed the "visual inspection". What's ironic about this is, even though nothing had been modified since the last smog check by AA Smog 2 years earlier which my vehicle passed with no problems. Also, I was told by the owner I would not be charged to re-test after I made the necessary changes, however when I returned to re-test the owner was not there and his employee charged me to re-test. It's very irritating when an owner and employee are not on the same page. Having experienced this inconsistency I don't recommend AA Smog. read more

My son took his BMW in for a smog and we've gone there many times. He spent an hour and a half and couldn't get it smogged. Then he takes it out on my son by yelling at him. My son isn't disrespectful but is not going to let anyone yell at him for nothing. He told my son to get the F#%k out of his shop. It took an employee to intervene and calm the situation. Be professional and tell a customer you're having trouble with it instead of blaming him for your frustration. No customer deserves to be yelled at. read more

I had been taking all four of my cars here for 12 years because it was close to home and one my cars had to be tested at a 'Test Only" station. You would think that as a loyal customer w/four cars they would give me a discount? Not once did they, even when I asked. I found another "Test Only" station near my work in Roseland on Sebastopol Rd. (A & G Smog Check). Not only did I not need an appt., I was in and out in less than 15 min. (less than that w/appt.) and It was almost 1/2 the price with their online coupon ($45). Do yourself a favor and drive the 10 minutes to A & G and save $$$. Been going here for 4 years now and much happier with the friendlier service and lower price. read more

Firstly, do all businesses a favor and don't forget your appointment and then arrive late, like I did, but if you do, 'cause stuff happens from time to time, for heaven's sake, just be cool about it. I feel very fortunate that the facility had room in their schedule to accommodate me even though I was 25 minutes late, and I appreciate the laid back, intelligent conversation I was able to have with Bob. FWIW, addressing some of the bad reviews I've seen on this business, I'll nod to the fact that the truth of a story lies somewhere between both sides, but from my experience in service industries, especially at a motorcycle shop, I will say that some people are just delusional, and will look through any experience with a highly distorted lens to fit their emotions. For example, our friend that had a 'just lowered a bit' car probably had a few items on there that simply by CARB law (which governs the smog tests) are not allowed, one of them being on this particular car, what sounds like an aftermarket radiator that replaced one of BMW or Volvo's Premair Ozone-catalyzing radiators, and by changing it, an emissions device is removed, therefore a reputable smog station has no option but to fail the test because that's the law. The review about the van with a toolbox flooded my memory banks with some crazy piles of tools and homemade 'toolboxes' that I've seen in my day, and made me laugh. Another reviewer mentioned that this SMOG test only station couldn't tell them what was wrong with the car. That is correct, a SMOG test only station cannot tell you what is wrong with your car. That is by CARB law, you need an emissions repair facility for diagnostic and repair work; your issue is with CARB's system and policies, not with the test station. So everyone, please leave your sanctimonious entitlement sensibilities at home and stop literally using Yelp as a mechanism to REDUCE A BUSINESS'S ABILITY TO GAIN CUSTOMERS, and for heaven's sake, just be cool. - Happy Customer read more

I had a tune on my car and it failed due to a new software check that state of CA does now as part of the smog check. They were knowledgeable about the new check and helped me finally pass. They didn't charge me for the failed retest and worked with me to get it to pass. One of the guys stayed open late for me to come and do the retest. Took my 2014 Honda Accord for a smog test and it didn't pass due to a catalyst sensor problem. Bob told me to put 50-100 miles on it and bring it back for a free retest. I did and it didn't pass again. This time Ted told to check a specific internet site to fix the computer glitch. I did and followed the instructions and took it back for another free test and it didn't pass again. I'm taking the car to Honda. I was impressed with Bob and Teds professionalism and effort to pass the smog test. Both of these gentlemen were very helpful in my clueless attempt to pass the smog test. I would strongly recommend this business because of there customer service and empathy and concern for their customers. They do everything they can to pass your vehicle. I have been a customer of AA Smog Test for the last 6 years. Every two years when the smog cert comes due I take all three of my cars there. I have never had a problem up until this last time. In July, I took my 96 Pontiac in for a SMOG check and it passed with flying colors as usual. The tech told me he could not issue a certificate though because, upon inspection, he noticed that the oil filler cap was missing. Evidently, it was left off the last time I had the oil changed. I drove the car to the local auto parts store and picked up a new cap and returned to AA Smog only to find out that the entire test had to be re-done and I was going to have to pay full price for the re-check! After complaining about this treatment, he agreed to knock $10 off the price but that was all he could do. I went ahead and had him do the test but I doubt that I will be back in two years. I understand the rules for failures and re-tests but come on! A missing oil filler cap? An infraction that was noted before the test was actually run? It seems to me that he could have pointed it out to me and I could have replaced the cap prior to running the initial test. To try and charge me for two tests over the cap was ridiculous. It felt like he was just trying to pick my pocket for two tests over a trivial matter. Don't expect any slack from these guys! read more

Passed my old van first time. I know ultimately thats up to me and maintaining my emissions, but hey, who isn't happy passing an old clunker first time? Make sure you have no check engine light, and a solid gas cap and you should be off to a good start. Got me into an appointment about an hour after my phone call on a Saturday, and I didn't have to wait when I got there. Also, I am pretty sure AA costs less than other places in the vicinity, at least by a few dollars. read more

We took our 2008 vehicle in for a smog inspection today. Knowing our check engine light was on, this place inspected the car, wouldn't pass it because the light was on and then charged us $65. He didn't advise us in advance that he couldn't pass our car because this light was on. The light comes on automatically every 5,000 miles, reminding us to change the oil. That was going to be the next stop. What a deceptive manner of operating a business. read more

Our company has used AA smog for years . We also use them for our personal autos . They have always been very accommodating in scheduling appointments and completing the work in a timely fashion. Often the price turns out to be less than the quote. Our family was using a local competitor until we compared notes and realized we were getting ripped off. The other shop had two prices one for a smog check and another price for a guaranteed pass. If you didn't pay guaranteed price,guess what , it didn't pass. When he took your keys out to your car to check the mileage he forgot to mention that the engine light was on. Therefore he takes your money and says it doesn't pass due to the engine light. It works especially well on women. That has never happened to us at AA smog. They have integrity. Somet the other shop lacks. read more
