I got a smog test here and my windshield wipers replaced. It all took about an hour to complete when I came an hour before closing. This store front is a little hard to find but it's tucked behind another storefront. Their wait room is really nice and calming. Dude, the dog, is cute but his barks were sometimes scary. They have a coupon on their website but you cannot stack coupons. There are coupons for the smog test and windshield wipers but I could only choose one coupon for one service. Hope this all helps. Good spot in Davis.

This is my 2008 Lincoln navigator with over 300,000 miles on it. Jon and his guys keep it driving like new!

Dan H.

I have been using JOHN and his guys for almost 3 years now. They have worked on all of my vehicles. Most recently my 2008 Lincoln navigator that has a little over 300,000 miles on it. The interior is immaculate because all the driving has been highway driving with only me as the driver. But it needed some front end work from an alignment standpoint and a little loose in the steering and I took it in and left it with John and they just don't give up. I will just put it that way they will fix whatever the problem is if you give them enough time because they are a patient crew I must admit that. But if you give them enough time and let them go through and change the necessary parts and sometimes it ends up being the smallest things that make something work correctly, but they are just great and I can't say enough good things about Jon and his team!! You can trust them with any vehicles.

Carlos P.

As always. They get you in and out quickly. Thanks for the great service!!! If your in Davis, make this your go to Smog Shop!!!! Hint. Go to their website to get savings.

I've been here to get a smog check and oil change. Both times, I had very positive experiences.Owner is very nice, professional. He even dropped me off at Starbucks for my oil change because it was a windy and the garage door was being loud. I will definitely return for other services on my car. I took my car in for a smog check. It didn't pass. Jon asked me if I was mechanically inclined because if I was, I could make the repair myself and save some money. Long story short, I made the repair and my vehicle passed. I listened to him speak with the customers there and he was always kind and respectful. I'll be returning. read more

I was searching around for a Smog Station and every other place I researched was quoting me ~$75, FOR A SMOG CHECK. Luckily I work in Davis and found A1 Smog on Yelp along with his coupon for $43.75+$8.25 certification fee ($52 total). Unheard of. Also unheard of was how fast (15 minutes) and friendly (I mean, there was a lovable dog there to pet the whole time I waited) this place is. Definitely, highly recommend. read more

This guy was so cool. Not only did I get in and out in under 20 minutes, but he helped answer a bunch of other questions about my car. Wow, what a help! I asked him how to change my power steering and alternator belts, as it would cost a lot for a mechanic to do that. I asked him if I could do that myself if I watched some u-tube videos, and he was so encouraging and informative. He even invited me to call him with any questions when I do it, and we could skype about it! That's going above and beyond the call of duty for a simple smog check! Can't remember the guys' name, but he's a super cool fellow read more

Outstanding customer service provided by Jon! Best price and service for smog checks in Davis hands down. I went in around 9am before going to work and the experience really brightened my day. Jon and his awesome dog were very welcoming. I have a 1984 Nissan 720 truck and I wasn't sure if I'd still pass. Jon worked diligently and had the job done in less than 20 mins. He even did me the courtesy of reconnecting a loose vaccum line to my carburetor. All in all, I was very pleased I chose to go here. read more

Here is what I think you'd want to know. 1. Location is not that easy to find. Behind another business, but just look for the signs. 2. Not such a nice waiting area, but I was there on a super hot day (over 100). 3. This is a family-run (including the dog) business. 4. Quick service (I'd call ahead to make sure they are not backed up). 5. Reasonable pricing (about $20.00 less than some other quotes I received). 6. If you want value for your money, you don't want to waste time waiting around, you want to support a local family business -- I believe you will be very happy with A1. read more

If there were more stars available - I would award it because A1 Smog deserves it. Owner, Jon is best. He is a competent smog tech, skilled light mechanic professional and very personable. His fees are fair. Parking is plentiful, right off Chiles Rd - 80 frontage road. The wait area is cool and clean. Shop dog Roxy is adorable and friendly - though initially on the shy side. I like petting her while waiting. It calms me down and lower my blood pressure. Last week Jon took care of my Outback smog certification. I am good for another two years. My wife's Accord is next. So Com'on Davis. Bring your dorm-mate, tell your RA. Call your classmates and spread the good word! A1 Smog is #1 read more

I have found my new mechanic by chance. He got me in for a smog check immediately and went ahead with his services though I realized I had forgotten my purse, graciously allowing me to get payment after the fact. I had just left the smog place I usually go to, feeling as if the proprietors of the place didn't value my business, and chose A1 due to it's web presence, proximity to my home, and readily available coupon. Now I'll be sure to go back because of the efficient service and general goodwill shown me. read more

Jon is always honest and the prices are reasonable. When I came in this week and requested that my battery and alternator be replaced, he managed to squeeze me in on short notice. He suggested replacing a belt or possibly two and said he'd have his guy look at them to see. This was an unexpected expense, of course, so I said that unless it HAD to be done right away that I would need to wait on the belts. He understood the assignment. The belts were in okay shape, and his employee tightened one of them and I was back on the road. I really like this shop and the owner. Been coming here for several years and they've never let me down! Side note: Good old Roxy the shop dog passed away in 2021. Now there's a new, totally sweet golden retriever named Dude. He's young so he might jump when he meets you but he's learning and he's super affectionate and sweet and loves pets. It makes the wait more pleasant with a dog around! read more

I work in Davis and live in Woodland and usually try to get any car-related service done in Woodland because it just tends to be cheaper, easier, and less crowded. But the reviews for A1 were so good that I gave it a try. I'm happy to say that all of the 5-star reviews are well deserved. I stopped by without calling ahead and was still in and out in less than half an hour. The price was as good as or better than any others I'd seen and Jon was extremely friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. I'd recommend A1 to anyone and will definitely be a repeat customer. read more

Jon is wonderful! It only took him 20 minutes to smog my car and I even had an enjoyable wait with his dog, Roxy. The price is also fantastic! He charged me $48 for a smog. However, my car didn't pass the test, so he offered me some helpful tips on how to pass it the second time and wasn't going to charge me extra for a retest. I paid $39.75 for the first test, then paid the difference for the certificate at $8.25 for the retake. I'll definitely go back to A1 Smog. read more

The next go around, when my car started to overheat on a trip, I brought it into the shop again knowing the great service I received the first time. Zach listened to me carefully about the issues my car was having, and thoroughly inspected it. They even kept it overnight free of charge to double and triple check they were sure about the issues it was having. Though I received the news that my poor Jetta has reached it's life expectancy, every step of the way the mechanics here made me feel heard. Thank you Kevin and Zach!

He even sent me a detailed video of my vehicle, walking me through exactly what needed to be repaired and why. It's the first time I've ever had a mechanic do that, and right there I knew he was not only honest but truly knew vehicles inside and out. I had previously received a quote that was $700 higher, and Sal completed the work without cutting corners. On top of that, he diagnosed and fixed a long-time issue I'd been dealing with--something others had overlooked--and it turned out to be a simple fix. Honest, transparent, and highly skilled. I'll absolutely be coming back and recommending this shop to everyone I know.

had a negative experience with AAA Davis Auto Repair, a facility or mechanic shop recommended to me…read moreby AAA. Following an engine failure, the shop held my vehicle for one week. The initial invoice was $957.92, which included $310.62 for an aftermarket single fuel injector and $647.30 for labor. When I opted to provide genuine fuel injector myself, the shop issued a new invoice for $720.00, which added a $72.70 charge for "miscellaneous parts" not present in the original invoice. The vehicle failed again just four days only after the repairs was done and the car has the exact same symptoms, including a persistent burning smell and vibration. Despite my sending several emails to ask for assistance, the shop ignored my correspondence until I involved AAA Member Customer Service. Even then, the shop management argued with me allot and refused to honor the warranty or take accountability, requesting that I seek a third party report despite the vehicle still have the same problem since fourth day after their repairs were done and being within their warranty period. so they refused to take a look on it and wanted me to pay other diagnosis fee because they failed to diagnose and resolve the problem. AAA Davis Auto Repair misdiagnosed the vehicle and failed to address the root cause of the engine failure. This situation has compromised my family's safety and resulted in a significant waste of time and money. I am currently in an emergency situation and have found no cooperation from AAA Davis auto repair or from customer service and their management. I should not be required to seek another mechanic for a problem that is covered under my existing warranty with this mechanic shop Really it is a waste of time and money and no any accountability or understanding their warranty just on paper...not recommended.
