Many years ago it seems there were more family business and less corporate run chains. This place is family run I am told. The atmosphere is without a doubt reflective of that. Very laid back. No price gouging. I called almost every place in town and the price for a smog check is one of the lowest in town. When I called this place it seemed the friendliest so I went here. I have learned from experience when it comes to automotive places if a grump answers the phone it doesn't end well. I see that everyone else already posted photos of adorable Roxy the dog. I was in a major rush to get errands done before the holiday weekend. And he squeezed me in. Even over the phone he seemed nice. This place is great! Very fast! I was behind someone and I still got out fast. They have a coupon on the website, pricing is fair at least for smog. I am not sure what else is offered. He even sends in the smog certificate to the DMV. When you are a busy person, this is very helpful. I have been to smog places that don't do this. While you wait you can read some Calvin n Hobbes or other magazines if you prefer:) Customer service is fantastic here and I will recommend it to anyone I know who may need their car smogged. When you are a woman it is so nice to take your car somewhere and not get ripped off or talked to like an idiot. 10 stars****** It isn't that hard to find. It is right next to MESA RV. Behind another place. However be extremely cautious during rush hour. I almost got hit twice by people using the back road to get to the freeway. Jon is always honest and the prices are reasonable. When I came in this week and requested that my battery and alternator be replaced, he managed to squeeze me in on short notice. He suggested replacing a belt or possibly two and said he'd have his guy look at them to see. This was an unexpected expense, of course, so I said that unless it HAD to be done right away that I would need to wait on the belts. He understood the assignment. The belts were in okay shape, and his employee tightened one of them and I was back on the road. I really like this shop and the owner. Been coming here for several years and they've never let me down! Side note: Good old Roxy the shop dog passed away in 2021. Now there's a new, totally sweet golden retriever named Dude. He's young so he might jump when he meets you but he's learning and he's super affectionate and sweet and loves pets. It makes the wait more pleasant with a dog around! read more

I work in Davis and live in Woodland and usually try to get any car-related service done in Woodland because it just tends to be cheaper, easier, and less crowded. But the reviews for A1 were so good that I gave it a try. I'm happy to say that all of the 5-star reviews are well deserved. I stopped by without calling ahead and was still in and out in less than half an hour. The price was as good as or better than any others I'd seen and Jon was extremely friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. Jon is wonderful! It only took him 20 minutes to smog my car and I even had an enjoyable wait with his dog, Roxy. The price is also fantastic! He charged me $48 for a smog. However, my car didn't pass the test, so he offered me some helpful tips on how to pass it the second time and wasn't going to charge me extra for a retest. I paid $39.75 for the first test, then paid the difference for the certificate at $8.25 for the retake. I'll definitely go back to A1 Smog. read more

This is a new SMOG shop in Davis as of January 2013. The owner, Jon, is a super nice guy and really appreciates new customers. He tells you exactly how long it will take and is very efficient. Had issues with 2005 Honda Element that the battery had died in. Computer forgets everything so would not pass tests when taken to local West Sac station. Their instructions were not what was needed. Called the Honda dealer and they recommended A1. Jon had the right answers to the problem and I was able to get issue cleared up and have him do the test. Passed fine. I highly recommend him and will use for all my cars going forward. Great service!!! read more
