Shane is an absolute Hero of mine. He has been my mechanic for years. I've brought my family and friend's automobiles to him also, and here's why. He's honest, professional, Fair, extremely knowledgeable about all vehicles and above all, he's trustworthy. I recently had my catalytic converter stolen off my truck, so I immediately took it to him and he knew exactly what to do and how to handle it. Got it fixed and I was back on the road in no time. He always comes through and that is worth my time and money. Thank you Shane and your crew !!! read more

Called in hopes of making an appointment to get my ac fixed. Person on the phone was incredibly rude and asked if I was taking guesses about the issue. Then proceeded to say that's a waste of everyone's time. Customer service was unfriendly and unhelpful, made me not want to further book with them. I'd look somewhere else before deciding here read more

Went for an intermittent no crank, no start diagnosis. Told me he might not be able to get it done that day, but that he would let me know. Called back within a couple of hours and told me he fixed it. Told me it was a loose battery connector and he tells me that I should never work on my car myself because I made that mistake. Charged me 100$ for that diagnosis. This place will fix your car, but would most likely be rude doing it. I'd recommend going elsewhere. read more

I have had decent experiences here. Auto shops are not somewhere I feel comfortable often. It's family run. They have been great with getting my truck in quickly. When I have needed it back same day or close they have even got it back to me earlier than expected. A tail light fix was $80 which is wild because the light was probably $10. I expect a shop to upsell me as a young woman. Shane does have a bit of an attitude but he's also been helpful and was honest about where to go to get my engine taken apart instead of them. For me the "vibe" matters and it's a respectful environment this far. Not bro like or college aged guys. read more

Quick work and excellent customer service. So helpful when we really needed help. Highly recommended. Thanks Ryan!

Although the manager was kind to me and fixed my issue in a timely and financially transparent way, I noticed how his demeanor changed towards a non-English speaking customer. I was really happy with my service until I saw him treat this customer with disdain and disrespect. I heard him tell the other customer "you need to learn the language buddy" when the person was trying to communicate with through his phone translator. His change in demeanor from me to this other customer was upsetting. Unfortunately my experience was sullied by this and my previous feelings about referring my friends and family here have disappeared. I hope that the management can treat all customers with the respect they showed me. read more

I am skeptical when it comes to finding a new mechanic. However, I needed to have my vehicle serviced and my old mechanic suggested Davis Auto Works. I took in my vehicle and had a brake check and Shane gave me a detailed breakdown of what was found. This alone convinced me this was a shop I wanted to continue bringing my business to. He also fixed my light issues. I must say, I have all my faith, Shane and his technicians will treat your vehicle great. I highly recommend Davis Auto Works. One last thing Shane took me in at moment when I needed repairs. Thank you Shane and to your entire staff. read more

No bullshit, quick, fast, 10x cheaper than dealership. Very respectful staff, 10/10 would recommend.

The price for an oil change here is significantly higher compared to other shops in Davis. Unfortunately, the service was also very unwelcoming. When I politely asked if there was a student discount due to the high cost, I was abruptly told, "I must ask you to leave. I want you to leave," despite maintaining a respectful tone throughout. The employee even raised his voice and told me never to return. This kind of customer service is deeply disappointing and will only hold the store's reputation in the long run. read more

Be cautious when reading the 5-star reviews. they seem overly generic and repetitive, which raises concerns about their authenticity. In our experience, we came in for a simple brake pad replacement, but were met with a long list of unnecessary recommendations clearly aimed at upselling. It's important to stay alert and question their suggestions. Do yourself a favor and consider taking your vehicle elsewhere for a more honest review. read more

Shane was incredibly rude to me and my family. Unprofessional and using words like "retarded" to answer our questions. Absolutely would not recommend this place read more

STORY SUMMARY: While they'll fix whatever issue your car has, they'll also claim it has issues it doesn't, hoping to upsell because you don't know any better. FULL STORY: I brought my car in because my battery wasn't holding a charge. They were able to fix the connection after a day, and while I was satisfied with this, what disappointed me was when they called and tried to claim that my car had been neglected in terms of routine maintenance. Mainly that "my oil was black and in dire need of a change," "my air filter was filthy" and my serpentine belt was "chipped and could snap at any time leaving me stranded." They quoted me around $300 for these repairs (even though all these components could be independently gotten for less than $100). I declined, as I knew for a fact that my oil and air filter were fine. I guess they're used to pulling this on college students who don't know any better, but luckily my Dad is anal when it comes to badgering me about checking my oil and air filters, which led me to preemptively check both before dropping the car off. As you can see in the pics below, both were in fine condition and NOWHERE near the state of disrepair the mechanic claimed. Likewise after declining their maintenance offer, I checked the belt and lo and behold it was fine too. While I have no qualms with the service they did provide, the blatant attempt to deceive and upsell me has definitely turned me away from visiting this specific mechanic in the future. read more

I was pretty disappointed with the service I received here. I brought my car in here due to a problem with it overheating -- it was kind enough for these folks to be able to get it in the same week, however they were unable to diagnose my vehicle. Upon dropping it off, I explained the exact situation in which my car over heated - after driving about 20 minutes, the gauge would spike and the car ran extremely hot in general. They initially called me and explained that they were unable to locate the issue but would run a few tests and drive it around town - then when I picked up the car I found out they never took it for a drive. After explaining that the issue occurred after driving and while idle at a light/stop sign, the mechanic made me feel very belittled and simply said "I don't know what to tell you." I took my car down the road a couple days later and they pinpointed the exact issue (and were even kind enough to listen to my suggestion and take it for a drive). I'm not sure about their other services, but personally I would not bring my car back here. read more

Shane is awesome and a super nice guy. We were on our way to Tahoe where I realized we needed to put in new freeze proof wind shield wiper fluid. I called Shane hoping he could help remove the old fluid. He asked me to come in and not only did he help me right away but he did it for free. He stopped what he was doing, siphoned out the old fluid and got us going within about 15 min. He could've easily charged me and I would've happily paid. It ended up snowing on our way up and we would've been totally screwed if he hadn't helped. Thanks Shane! read more

My daughter went here based on a recommendation. I don't think we'll go back. The repair was done right but the price was more than even the dealer would have charged by almost 2/3 and more than the original quote. Super friendly and talked through everything but I feel like I was ripped off. The part alone was more money than the dealer charges, which I've never seen from an independent auto shop. I'll keep looking for somewhere else in this area who doesn't take advantage of college students. read more

Helped with a buyers inspection. Was incredibly thorough and helpful. Explained things very well and convinced me not to buy the truck. read more

TCB. Great smog service and good advice regarding other issues with my cars. Wide knowledge base.

AVOID. Shane is a scam artist who likes to prey on people inexperienced with cars. You could be next. He once quoted me 60 dollars to put my own spare on my car (no new tire). I played dumb about it to see if he would go along with it, and then he ended up reducing it to his "labor minimum" at the last minute. There was another point in time where I paid for an oil change, and yet the oil light on my car started coming on not too long after. Lastly, he charges an overpriced 61 dollars for a 15 minute smog check, and will fail your car over pedantics (visual inspection) even if you meet/exceed all of the emissions standards. And if he fails your car he doesn't offer a refund, and he doesn't offer a complimentary second testing. read more

Was on our way from California to Nevada to visit family when the check engine light of our jeep wrangler started flashing. Called other shops and Davis Auto Works was the only one to take us right in and get us back on the road four hours later after changing multiple fuel injectors. Professionalism, reliability, and trustworthy! No bs. Highly recommended. Plus downtown is super close so was able to hangout nearby. read more

We had an emergency with our friend's car and Shane totally helped us out by squeezing us into his busy schedule. We were recommended to this place by my sister and parents and he was great and affordable. read more

Shane was absolutely great! My family was on a day trip when all the engine lights came on in our car. We just happened to pull into Davis Auto Works to turn around and thought we should get their opinion. Shane dropped what he was doing, listened to our situation, ran diagnostics on the car, and gave us suggestions in a matter of 10 minutes. AND he insisted that we don't pay him. We felt safe continuing our trip until we got back to our regular mechanic. read more

I have a 2001 Subaru Outback. The first time I brought my car here, one of my ignition coil packs had to be replaced. I was stressed because I had to commute to work and was very tight on money at the time. They fixed it within hours, and the price was very reasonable. Shane explained everything very clearly to me, and I confirmed with my friend who is an experienced mechanic that the price was more than fair (I normally go to my friend to fix my car, but he is all the way in the bay so I needed to find someone in Davis when I moved here). I came back a second time because my check engine light came on. They ran a diagnostic and determined it was my catalytic converter. They fixed it within 24 hours. When I saw the price, I was concerned because I thought it would be a little less expensive. Shane was very patient when explaining to me the price, and I once again confirmed with my mechanic friend that it was totally reasonable. Catalytic converters have shot up in price, and to conform to California regulations they had to purchase the cat straight from Subaru. I am happy that Shane was so patient with me when I first called about the price because I am sure he has to deal with those sorts of calls all the time. Most people know hardly anything about cars, yet think they know everything after a quick Google search. For example, the Google search I initially did for my catalytic converter showed a price of around $1600, but I don't actually know what I am looking for and that search did not reflect the truth of the matter. The actual cost was around $2000, directly from Subaru. If I was an angry Karen who refused to think critically and didn't know jack shit about cars, I would have thought I had been screwed over and given a 1-star review! Imagine that. Some of the reviews mention upselling, but I have not experienced that so far. As I said, I confirmed every charge both times with a very experienced mechanic that I trust (he is like a brother to me). At first, I thought I might have been up-sold and thought about these reviews... but I was not. I will definitely continue coming here. Shane and the crew provide excellent, QUICK, experienced, and honest service. read more

My Wife was traveling to Reno !!! Called me said .......... BRAKE LAMP LIGHT ON DASH ON !!!! Ask her to turn around .... Of course she don't want to ... So I search her route ..... Get a hold of Shane tell him my situation and ask if he can squeeze me in !!! He says yes if she comes now I should have her on the road in 10 or 15 minutes !! He delivered and did it for 20 bucks plus tax !! Didn't try to take advantage of a bad situation ! Thanks Shane ... read more

Battery died without warning (is there ever a warning?) at the gas station across the street right before we were planning to take our son's car on a road trip. We got to the shop a few minutes before closing. Shane ordered a battery and installed it and had us on our way 45 minutes after closing. We told our son he has found his new mechanic. Thank you Davis Auto Works! read more

Pretty rude when doing business with them. Had one experience here and they raised the original price unreasonably on a simple bumper fix. Won't be coming back. read more

UC Davis parents, please beware of this "mechanic." Read the 5 star reviews here carefully. Many talk about his upselling services. In our case, the upsells were not needed AT ALL. Do yourselves a favor and find another place. read more

I had my catalytic converter replaced here, (among a ton of other little services) and only years later when the smog standards changed to require a visual inspection from the smog people did I learn that the part was aftermarket AND INSTALLED UPSIDE DOWN. Apparently my car was still passing emissions standards without the help of the cat. My fiancé just found the receipt amongst some paperwork and said "most of this stuff is not necessary, and they probably would not have suggested it if you were not a young woman." read more

Didn't want to do tire rotation with my oil change as advertised because tires were old when they are not. Kept pushing for me to replace my filter there after I already said no twice. Had a leak that was pretty bad but he told me I wouldn't get the car out of the lot and certainly not back home which was a blatant lie. Asked for an estimate and told him nicely that I would like to ask around other places than he went on a rant about how that was a special limited time only price that he was only offering right now cause it was a slow day. I ended up going elsewhere for a much cheaper price and way better service. He was nice at first and became very aggressive and pushy after I told him I'm not gonna replace my tube there. read more

It's good to know that you can trust someone to not give you the run around and instead give you honest advice and service. Shane and his crew have been nothing but good to me and my car, whether it's been for an annual high-milage checkup or a repair on the electrical. Each time, Shane has taken the time to fully explain what the job will require, why it requires it, and how much he estimates it to be. On a recent repair, he even printed up the electrical schematics and guided me through exactly what was wrong with my car and how he could get it fixed. I understand that quotes can fluctuate, and I like that he makes sure to call at least once during the repair/work to check in and give me updates on cost. I see no reason to go anywhere else. Why pay more at the dealer and get endless up-sales of unnecessary and expensive work? Go to Davis Auto Works. read more

This is probably the best service I have ever experienced in Davis. Shane and his colleague are super helpful, professional, and accountable. I have a Porsche Cayenne and Davis auto works appears to be the only place offering oil change for my vehicle. Shane did his research and confirmed with me the estimated cost, which is way more affordable than the estimate given by the nearest Porsche dealer (Porsche dealer gave me an estimate of 400 for oil change only). Shane called me multiples to ensure that I receive all the services with proper pricing. I highly recommend this business. read more

I give Davis Auto Works (DAW) four stars; here's why: I was having car trouble that I suspected was either a faulty ignition switch or bad starter. DAW diagnosed the problem as a bad starter, so I knew they were honest, BUT they also tried to get me to bite on an additional repair, which when I called my regular mechanic (Ralph's Auto & Truck in Santa Rosa) I found out was both overpriced and not as urgent as they'd lead me to believe (although to be fair, their price to repair my starter was reasonable). Overall, I'm a fan of DAW, but not a HUGE one. read more

Call Shane, the owner, and he will take care of you! He is trustworthy and knows his stuff! I have been looking for a second car to buy..something a little nicer than what I currently have. So I went on Craigslist and found a really nice newer used car for a good price..the car was located in Davis and I found Shane at Davis Auto Works. Shane gave me really good insight on the car, where it's been, and if it was a really good deal or a dud. Needless to say, it was like having a credit report on the car. I didn't buy the car but I am glad I didn't thanks to Shane. If you need a second opinion or need your car fixed, go to Davis Auto Works! I'm sooo glad I did! read more

I have been meaning to get on yelp and write this review for ages! I joined yelp just so I could give Shane and his shop an excellent review. Shane has helped me with my cars for almost 2 years now. Seriously, having been to soooo many auto shops all over California, driving used cars for the last 10 years, and being ripped off by so many of them, I can truly say I have never met as honest a mechanic as Shane. It's a family shop and they do good honest business!!! Shane is extremely knowledgeable, conscientious, approachable, and his prices are very reasonable. He helped me with two different vehicles that were in dire straights with difficult to diagnose problems, and I can confidently say I now trust no other mechanic to do as good a job. He figured out what other mechanics couldn't. Davis Auto Works is where I'd recommend anyone I know to go for their vehicle's maintenance and care. read more

I've taken my truck here a couple times now, and each time I left happy with the service and quality of care that they've taken. Seems to be family owned, I deal with the same guy every time, and he's really helpful. I know nothing of cars, and I try to be candid about the fact that I am a broke student. When I drop my car off, they call me each time they have to tack on something new for the car to work properly. If I can't afford to get something fixed, they let me know whether or not it's safe to drive without. They look out for me in regards to pricing, and make sure not to surprise me with fees when I arrive to pick my vehicle up. Great customer service, fast workers, and honest people. Much happier with this business than others I've been to in the area. read more

Shane, the owner of the shop, did an excellent job fixing my car. He is very knowledgeable and does a fair job diagnosing the problem. The diagnosis is $80. In addition, the service is quick as I receive my car within 1-2 business days. I went to Davis Auto Works twice. The first time was to repair a broken gas pump. When I picked up my car, he told me that I had an exhaust leak. I decided to bring my car back for round two. Shane diagnosed the leak with the pipes broken in the front of the car. It would have cost me $300 to replace it with new parts. Shane could have ordered the new parts, but he told me that it would be cheaper to weld the pipes together. I went with the welding, and my car works perfectly fine. I highly recommend going to Davis Auto Works! You do have to travel to this shop as it is located further down Olive Road. read more

Excellent service. Shane and Dennis know what they're doing at an honest price. Great place and would refer them to anyone and everyone. L

Warning: This place is a scam that not only rips you off, but does shoddy work as well. Back in February i needed an oil change quickly, so i went here as it was the closest. They charged me $75 for a synthetic oil change for a sedan. Now merely months later and barely 2000 miles on my car, i checked the oil level, and it is nearly empty. Suffice it to say, i will never be coming here again and neither should you. read more

Fast, friendly service! I was passing through town and needed a bit of help with my car. I was back on the road in no time!

Shane was amazing and made sure we got the best service with the best price. To start with, we called about 40 minutes until he closed on Wednesday and he wasn't able to quote us at the time, but asked we call back at 8am Thursday and he would make it a priority to get us a quote. We called back Thursday and he had been injured while leaving for the day the previous day and we were told to call back Friday. However, within an hour, Shane had called his shop, gotten our phone number from the caller ID, and gave us a call and got us a quote. Shane is an outstanding person and has an honest business. I needed a new transmission and other shops (and even the dealership) quoted me an absurd rate. Shane was fair and charged me nothing more than what was needed. If we had any questions, he answered truthfully with no BS. Even when we needed to take the car for the TCM to be reprogrammed and informed him what we were quoted, he urged us to call a different dealership as that did not sound accurate. Sure enough, he was right! All-in-all, Shane helped us save over $2,000 while providing excellent service. I would not hesitate to recommend Davis Auto Works to anyone. Thank you, Shane! read more

Came here to get a simple headlight switch (something I've done on my car myself before but decided to take it to save myself some effort and a headache so I know what the issue is and how to resolve it) and while the older gentleman was polite and pleasant Shane was the exact opposite. Tried to tell me that there were deeper computer problems with my car that would cost upwards of hundreds of dollars. He wanted 100$ an hour worth of labor just to take the headlight components apart, and then when I brought up that I would settle for aftermarket bulbs he refused and said he would I order the market bulbs, and when I asked to see the pricing myself he refused.
