I have had decent experiences here. Auto shops are not somewhere I feel comfortable often. It's family run. They have been great with getting my truck in quickly. When I have needed it back same day or close they have even got it back to me earlier than expected. A tail light fix was $80 which is wild because the light was probably $10. I expect a shop to upsell me as a young woman. Shane does have a bit of an attitude but he's also been helpful and was honest about where to go to get my engine taken apart instead of them. For me the "vibe" matters and it's a respectful environment this far. Not bro like or college aged guys. read more

Although the manager was kind to me and fixed my issue in a timely and financially transparent way, I noticed how his demeanor changed towards a non-English speaking customer. I was really happy with my service until I saw him treat this customer with disdain and disrespect. I heard him tell the other customer "you need to learn the language buddy" when the person was trying to communicate with through his phone translator. His change in demeanor from me to this other customer was upsetting. Unfortunately my experience was sullied by this and my previous feelings about referring my friends and family here have disappeared. I am skeptical when it comes to finding a new mechanic. However, I needed to have my vehicle serviced and my old mechanic suggested Davis Auto Works. I took in my vehicle and had a brake check and Shane gave me a detailed breakdown of what was found. This alone convinced me this was a shop I wanted to continue bringing my business to. He also fixed my light issues. I must say, I have all my faith, Shane and his technicians will treat your vehicle great. I highly recommend Davis Auto Works. The price for an oil change here is significantly higher compared to other shops in Davis. Unfortunately, the service was also very unwelcoming. When I politely asked if there was a student discount due to the high cost, I was abruptly told, "I must ask you to leave. I want you to leave," despite maintaining a respectful tone throughout. The employee even raised his voice and told me never to return. This kind of customer service is deeply disappointing and will only hold the store's reputation in the long run. read more

I was pretty disappointed with the service I received here. I brought my car in here due to a problem with it overheating -- it was kind enough for these folks to be able to get it in the same week, however they were unable to diagnose my vehicle. Upon dropping it off, I explained the exact situation in which my car over heated - after driving about 20 minutes, the gauge would spike and the car ran extremely hot in general. They initially called me and explained that they were unable to locate the issue but would run a few tests and drive it around town - then when I picked up the car I found out they never took it for a drive. After explaining that the issue occurred after driving and while idle at a light/stop sign, the mechanic made me feel very belittled and simply said "I don't know what to tell you." I took my car down the road a couple days later and they pinpointed the exact issue (and were even kind enough to listen to my suggestion and take it for a drive). I'm not sure about their other services, but personally I would not bring my car back here. read more

STORY SUMMARY: While they'll fix whatever issue your car has, they'll also claim it has issues it doesn't, hoping to upsell because you don't know any better. FULL STORY: I brought my car in because my battery wasn't holding a charge. They were able to fix the connection after a day, and while I was satisfied with this, what disappointed me was when they called and tried to claim that my car had been neglected in terms of routine maintenance. Mainly that "my oil was black and in dire need of a change," "my air filter was filthy" and my serpentine belt was "chipped and could snap at any time leaving me stranded." They quoted me around $300 for these repairs (even though all these components could be independently gotten for less than $100). I declined, as I knew for a fact that my oil and air filter were fine. I guess they're used to pulling this on college students who don't know any better, but luckily my Dad is anal when it comes to badgering me about checking my oil and air filters, which led me to preemptively check both before dropping the car off. As you can see in the pics below, both were in fine condition and NOWHERE near the state of disrepair the mechanic claimed. Likewise after declining their maintenance offer, I checked the belt and lo and behold it was fine too. While I have no qualms with the service they did provide, the blatant attempt to deceive and upsell me has definitely turned me away from visiting this specific mechanic in the future. read more

Shane is awesome and a super nice guy. We were on our way to Tahoe where I realized we needed to put in new freeze proof wind shield wiper fluid. I called Shane hoping he could help remove the old fluid. He asked me to come in and not only did he help me right away but he did it for free. He stopped what he was doing, siphoned out the old fluid and got us going within about 15 min. He could've easily charged me and I would've happily paid. My daughter went here based on a recommendation. I don't think we'll go back. The repair was done right but the price was more than even the dealer would have charged by almost 2/3 and more than the original quote. Super friendly and talked through everything but I feel like I was ripped off. The part alone was more money than the dealer charges, which I've never seen from an independent auto shop. I'll keep looking for somewhere else in this area who doesn't take advantage of college students. read more

AVOID. Shane is a scam artist who likes to prey on people inexperienced with cars. You could be next. He once quoted me 60 dollars to put my own spare on my car (no new tire). I played dumb about it to see if he would go along with it, and then he ended up reducing it to his "labor minimum" at the last minute. There was another point in time where I paid for an oil change, and yet the oil light on my car started coming on not too long after. Lastly, he charges an overpriced 61 dollars for a 15 minute smog check, and will fail your car over pedantics (visual inspection) even if you meet/exceed all of the emissions standards. And if he fails your car he doesn't offer a refund, and he doesn't offer a complimentary second testing. read more

Called other shops and Davis Auto Works was the only one to take us right in and get us back on the road four hours later after changing multiple fuel injectors. I have a 2001 Subaru Outback. The first time I brought my car here, one of my ignition coil packs had to be replaced. I was stressed because I had to commute to work and was very tight on money at the time. They fixed it within hours, and the price was very reasonable. Shane explained everything very clearly to me, and I confirmed with my friend who is an experienced mechanic that the price was more than fair (I normally go to my friend to fix my car, but he is all the way in the bay so I needed to find someone in Davis when I moved here). I came back a second time because my check engine light came on. They ran a diagnostic and determined it was my catalytic converter. They fixed it within 24 hours. When I saw the price, I was concerned because I thought it would be a little less expensive. Shane was very patient when explaining to me the price, and I once again confirmed with my mechanic friend that it was totally reasonable. Catalytic converters have shot up in price, and to conform to California regulations they had to purchase the cat straight from Subaru. I am happy that Shane was so patient with me when I first called about the price because I am sure he has to deal with those sorts of calls all the time. Most people know hardly anything about cars, yet think they know everything after a quick Google search. For example, the Google search I initially did for my catalytic converter showed a price of around $1600, but I don't actually know what I am looking for and that search did not reflect the truth of the matter. The actual cost was around $2000, directly from Subaru. If I was an angry Karen who refused to think critically and didn't know jack shit about cars, I would have thought I had been screwed over and given a 1-star review! Imagine that. Some of the reviews mention upselling, but I have not experienced that so far. As I said, I confirmed every charge both times with a very experienced mechanic that I trust (he is like a brother to me). At first, I thought I might have been up-sold and thought about these reviews... but I was not. I will definitely continue coming here. I had my catalytic converter replaced here, (among a ton of other little services) and only years later when the smog standards changed to require a visual inspection from the smog people did I learn that the part was aftermarket AND INSTALLED UPSIDE DOWN. Apparently my car was still passing emissions standards without the help of the cat. My fiancé just found the receipt amongst some paperwork and said "most of this stuff is not necessary, and they probably would not have suggested it if you were not a young woman." read more

This is probably the best service I have ever experienced in Davis. Shane and his colleague are super helpful, professional, and accountable. I have a Porsche Cayenne and Davis auto works appears to be the only place offering oil change for my vehicle. Shane did his research and confirmed with me the estimated cost, which is way more affordable than the estimate given by the nearest Porsche dealer (Porsche dealer gave me an estimate of 400 for oil change only). I've taken my truck here a couple times now, and each time I left happy with the service and quality of care that they've taken. Seems to be family owned, I deal with the same guy every time, and he's really helpful. I know nothing of cars, and I try to be candid about the fact that I am a broke student. When I drop my car off, they call me each time they have to tack on something new for the car to work properly. If I can't afford to get something fixed, they let me know whether or not it's safe to drive without. They look out for me in regards to pricing, and make sure not to surprise me with fees when I arrive to pick my vehicle up. Great customer service, fast workers, and honest people. Much happier with this business than others I've been to in the area. read more

Didn't want to do tire rotation with my oil change as advertised because tires were old when they are not. Kept pushing for me to replace my filter there after I already said no twice. Had a leak that was pretty bad but he told me I wouldn't get the car out of the lot and certainly not back home which was a blatant lie. Asked for an estimate and told him nicely that I would like to ask around other places than he went on a rant about how that was a special limited time only price that he was only offering right now cause it was a slow day. I ended up going elsewhere for a much cheaper price and way better service. He was nice at first and became very aggressive and pushy after I told him I'm not gonna replace my tube there. read more

It's good to know that you can trust someone to not give you the run around and instead give you honest advice and service. Shane and his crew have been nothing but good to me and my car, whether it's been for an annual high-milage checkup or a repair on the electrical. Each time, Shane has taken the time to fully explain what the job will require, why it requires it, and how much he estimates it to be. On a recent repair, he even printed up the electrical schematics and guided me through exactly what was wrong with my car and how he could get it fixed. I understand that quotes can fluctuate, and I like that he makes sure to call at least once during the repair/work to check in and give me updates on cost. I see no reason to go anywhere else. I give Davis Auto Works (DAW) four stars; here's why: I was having car trouble that I suspected was either a faulty ignition switch or bad starter. DAW diagnosed the problem as a bad starter, so I knew they were honest, BUT they also tried to get me to bite on an additional repair, which when I called my regular mechanic (Ralph's Auto & Truck in Santa Rosa) I found out was both overpriced and not as urgent as they'd lead me to believe (although to be fair, their price to repair my starter was reasonable). Overall, I'm a fan of DAW, but not a HUGE one. read more

So I went on Craigslist and found a really nice newer used car for a good price..the car was located in Davis and I found Shane at Davis Auto Works. Seriously, having been to soooo many auto shops all over California, driving used cars for the last 10 years, and being ripped off by so many of them, I can truly say I have never met as honest a mechanic as Shane. Shane, the owner of the shop, did an excellent job fixing my car. He is very knowledgeable and does a fair job diagnosing the problem. The diagnosis is $80. In addition, the service is quick as I receive my car within 1-2 business days. I went to Davis Auto Works twice. The first time was to repair a broken gas pump. When I picked up my car, he told me that I had an exhaust leak. I decided to bring my car back for round two. Shane diagnosed the leak with the pipes broken in the front of the car. It would have cost me $300 to replace it with new parts. Shane could have ordered the new parts, but he told me that it would be cheaper to weld the pipes together. I went with the welding, and my car works perfectly fine. I highly recommend going to Davis Auto Works! You do have to travel to this shop as it is located further down Olive Road. read more

Warning: This place is a scam that not only rips you off, but does shoddy work as well. Back in February i needed an oil change quickly, so i went here as it was the closest. They charged me $75 for a synthetic oil change for a sedan. Now merely months later and barely 2000 miles on my car, i checked the oil level, and it is nearly empty. Shane was amazing and made sure we got the best service with the best price. To start with, we called about 40 minutes until he closed on Wednesday and he wasn't able to quote us at the time, but asked we call back at 8am Thursday and he would make it a priority to get us a quote. We called back Thursday and he had been injured while leaving for the day the previous day and we were told to call back Friday. However, within an hour, Shane had called his shop, gotten our phone number from the caller ID, and gave us a call and got us a quote. Shane is an outstanding person and has an honest business. I needed a new transmission and other shops (and even the dealership) quoted me an absurd rate. Shane was fair and charged me nothing more than what was needed. If we had any questions, he answered truthfully with no BS. Even when we needed to take the car for the TCM to be reprogrammed and informed him what we were quoted, he urged us to call a different dealership as that did not sound accurate. Came here to get a simple headlight switch (something I've done on my car myself before but decided to take it to save myself some effort and a headache so I know what the issue is and how to resolve it) and while the older gentleman was polite and pleasant Shane was the exact opposite. Tried to tell me that there were deeper computer problems with my car that would cost upwards of hundreds of dollars. He wanted 100$ an hour worth of labor just to take the headlight components apart, and then when I brought up that I would settle for aftermarket bulbs he refused and said he would I order the market bulbs, and when I asked to see the pricing myself he refused. I came here after hearing an amazing review. I hit a rock during a road trip over the weekend, and the underside of my car was looking rough. I love that this shop is ran by a father and son, but I'm currently a broke college student with hopes and dreams as well. I paid the charge to get my car looked at and was pretty close to coming back in the morning. Something just wasn't right, so I went and got a second opinion. This place would have charged me almost $300 to replace my engine cap in total compared to $122 I found less than five minutes away. read more

I wouldn't take my car to anyone else. He's not the cheapest shop around, but as a service-provider myself (veterinarian), I strongly believe that "you get what you pay for." I drive my car long distances, so I want to feel secure knowing my 18-year old Acura isn't going to leave me stranded somewhere. Shane's professional and competent service doesn't leave a doubt in my mind. I even take my car to him for every oil change because I know it will be done right without him recommending a bunch of unnecessary services. When ever I've gone to Jiffy Lube, they recommend a bunch of shit that my car doesn't really need and refused to prioritize for my budget. Shane never does that. He explains what needs to be done now, what should be done soon, and what could be done to be proactive, but not necessary. For example, when he load-tested my battery the other day he told me that it has about four more months useful life left. He didn't push the sale to replace it, leaving it up to me whether I'd rather let it die to get my money's worth or replace it sooner. I have been going to him since I moved to Davis in 2006 (same car). That first time I called, I had a light pop up on the dashboard. He quoted me $50 diagnostic fee, which seemed totally fair for his time. It ended up being no big deal, so he reset the computer in my car and didn't charge me anything because it took him like five minutes. What a nice guy! When something more serious happened later, he was straight-forward, honest and timely. He even gave me the option to install a salvaged part in order to save me $800; and then after three hours of labor, the part didn't work! He ordered the Honda new part and re-did the work at no extra labor cost (just the difference on the part), which was helpful to a starving vet student (me). When I met my husband in 2009, I knew we were meant to be when he informed me that he also used Shane for all his auto repairs, and had since 2006 also. Our scientific minds appreciate his logical and straightforward approach. Always a good sign when two people who like each other also independently like the same service provider! As far as the person who said he was a rip on the Smog-check repairs, I have to admit it wouldn't have occurred to me to take my car to him for smogging repairs. That is sort of a specialized issue and I would have gone straight to a smog-repair shop that does them every day all day. Seems like they'd be better prepared to assess the issue and recommend the most efficient repair. As far as general auto repair goes, I wouldn't trust anyone in Davis but Shane. read more

He's knowledgeable, and of the 5 auto repairs shops I had called the same day asking about headlight repairs, Shane was the only one who had asked more about whether headlights were both out at the same time (which would indicate a deeper problem than just defective bulbs), and gave the problem extra consideration.
