I wouldn't take my car to anyone else. He's not the cheapest shop around, but as a service-provider myself (veterinarian), I strongly believe that "you get what you pay for." I drive my car long distances, so I want to feel secure knowing my 18-year old Acura isn't going to leave me stranded somewhere. Shane's professional and competent service doesn't leave a doubt in my mind. I even take my car to him for every oil change because I know it will be done right without him recommending a bunch of unnecessary services. When ever I've gone to Jiffy Lube, they recommend a bunch of shit that my car doesn't really need and refused to prioritize for my budget. Shane never does that. He explains what needs to be done now, what should be done soon, and what could be done to be proactive, but not necessary. For example, when he load-tested my battery the other day he told me that it has about four more months useful life left. He didn't push the sale to replace it, leaving it up to me whether I'd rather let it die to get my money's worth or replace it sooner. I have been going to him since I moved to Davis in 2006 (same car). That first time I called, I had a light pop up on the dashboard. He quoted me $50 diagnostic fee, which seemed totally fair for his time. It ended up being no big deal, so he reset the computer in my car and didn't charge me anything because it took him like five minutes. What a nice guy! When something more serious happened later, he was straight-forward, honest and timely. He even gave me the option to install a salvaged part in order to save me $800; and then after three hours of labor, the part didn't work! He ordered the Honda new part and re-did the work at no extra labor cost (just the difference on the part), which was helpful to a starving vet student (me). When I met my husband in 2009, I knew we were meant to be when he informed me that he also used Shane for all his auto repairs, and had since 2006 also. Our scientific minds appreciate his logical and straightforward approach. Always a good sign when two people who like each other also independently like the same service provider! As far as the person who said he was a rip on the Smog-check repairs, I have to admit it wouldn't have occurred to me to take my car to him for smogging repairs. That is sort of a specialized issue and I would have gone straight to a smog-repair shop that does them every day all day. Seems like they'd be better prepared to assess the issue and recommend the most efficient repair. As far as general auto repair goes, I wouldn't trust anyone in Davis but Shane. read more

I came here after hearing an amazing review. I hit a rock during a road trip over the weekend, and the underside of my car was looking rough. I love that this shop is ran by a father and son, but I'm currently a broke college student with hopes and dreams as well. I paid the charge to get my car looked at and was pretty close to coming back in the morning. Something just wasn't right, so I went and got a second opinion. This place would have charged me almost $300 to replace my engine cap in total compared to $122 I found less than five minutes away. read more

My daughter had a flat tire on the freeway and she was charged $30 to put in spare. Most people or any decent shop would do this for free. Something lower might have been acceptable but $30 is not. Do not recommend this place. read more

Shane is quick and efficient, and was able to help me with a headlight change in under 15 minutes. He's knowledgeable, and of the 5 auto repairs shops I had called the same day asking about headlight repairs, Shane was the only one who had asked more about whether headlights were both out at the same time (which would indicate a deeper problem than just defective bulbs), and gave the problem extra consideration. I've been to dealers and third party shops, and this one beats them all by a mile. After I noticed my steering wheel column was shaking when braking at high speeds, I dropped by the shop to get a quote for the repair work. I could only see one employee and he was working away on a ford explorer. I tried to get his attention, but he was working diligently and probably couldn't hear my calls. So I left and called their phone as I was leaving. Dennis picked up immediately and quoted me at an affordable rate I would expect from a good friend. I dropped off the car and it was ready in less than 2 hours. When I stopped by the office to pick up the keys, Dennis and his son were talking to another customer about an old vehicle she brought in for maintenance. Both of the employees were warm and pleasant and the encounter looked more like a conversation between three old friends than one you normally see between businesses and their customers. I will be taking my car back here for any future needs I have. If you're looking for fast, quality service from a group of great guys, look no further. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Shane keeps my high mileage Honda running. He is very patient, often explaining things first to me, then to my partner [all over again]. My partner is a mechanic with a different fulltime job now...no time to work on the car. Cynical me, I have had my partner vet what Shane says...just to be sure. Each time, he has done so, he agrees 'Shane is right, it's the way to go'. By now, I know we've found an honest man and a good shop. Once, Shane diagnosed my car, told me what was wrong, and we decided to do the work ourselves, instead of at DAW. In this situation, Shane even continued to help us--"don't forget to change the thermostat while you're doing it...they tend to fail at this mileage". Shane has been trustworthy, knowledgeable, and has always gotten me in the door when I needed it. I've been to several places in Davis and just didn't get the same service that I get at DAW. It is a nice family-run shop. From oil changes and tires to catastrophic failures, I'd go to Davis Auto Works. read more

I've only been to DAW twice in the last couple of years, and both times I knew what I needed, he gave me a very reasonable estimate, the job was done in the time promised, and I was treated with the utmost courtesy and respect. In one case the estimate was exact and in the other it was a little high so it ended up costing less than expected. I had a positive experience getting a variety of problems fixed with my car here. Shane was able to fix my car's problems with the brakes, suspension, temperature gauge, and the check engine light in 1 work day. After diagnosing the problems, he called and gave me a detailed explanation of what was wrong and how much it would cost. Since I'm a recent graduate, he also asked if I wanted him talk to a parent (if they would be the ones paying), so that he could directly explain everything to them. I declined, but I appreciated the offer. Despite some extra problems that were revealed from the check engine light diagnosis, he was still able to finish everything in 1 day. He was polite and considerate in all transactions, and the car runs great now! His prices are a little higher than average, but it was worth it for the quick turnaround, trustworthy explanations, and thorough job. read more

I found this Auto Repair shop for my car's 30K service from a Davis local coupon magazine. 2 Days before I dropped my car for the service shop, I went there and asked the front desk lady about the details of 30K service. I brought a 30K service list from my car's dealer with me and ask them to confirm what kind of service they will provide in the list. They confirmed they will perform the tire rotation, oil change w/ filter, drain/refill coolant, spark plugs replacement, drain/refill transmission fluid and complete inspection which being clearly stated in their own coupon. Everything seems alright and I dropped my car two days later. After I picked my car, I am surprised to find out they DID NOT do anything about the spark plugs replacement and drain/refill transmission fluid as promised. I went back to their shop and argued with the owner why these 2 service were not done. The owner told me these service are not necessary in 30K service and he had given me a free installation of cabin filter! I called the dealer to double check what the owner said, the dealer told me a totally different story. The owner then began to state these service were not listed in the coupon and cost extra money and blah blah...... Then I asked to double check the service list in the coupon, he said he DIDN'T have a coupon available. Even worse, after I decide to do the drain/refill transmission fluid as the dealer/service manual recommended, he began to ask for $29.95 parts and $40.00 labor for an installation of Cabin Filter which my dealer will only charge $39.99 for the whole thing. I asked why he would charge so much for a cabin filter replacement, he said because it will take him more than half an hour to do it. But you know what, when I picked up my car at the first time, he told me it would only take 5 minutes and he will do it for free. Finally get everything set, but I begin to really worry about my car....... read more

The guys here are the best! I broke down in Davis, (25-30 min from home) about 100 yards from their shop... at 4pm in the afternoon... it's near quiting time and they are busy working on other cars but took the time to look at my vehicle, saw it was a small, fairly easy repair, dropped what they were doing and fixed it! My experience with this repair shop was a pleasant one I met my daughter at In-N-Out burger right around the corner for lunch she lives in Fairfield and I'm in Sacramento so this was a halfway point. Her car started having transmission issues so we took it to their shop and they were able to check the transmission fluid for us and unfortunately it looks like we need a new transmission but they were very helpful very pleasant I would recommend. I had a freakish accident coming off of the freeway at Olive Dr. in Davis, blew 2 tires and feared I'd ruined the rims. I rolled into Davis Auto Works in shock and was greeted by Sean, who interrupted the work he as doing to assess the damage and advise. Apart from being knowledgeable, competent and honest, I was especially grateful for his kindness and sympathy. He went out of his way to repair the car asap and send me on my way.
