We have moved with this company more than a handful of times. This last time, however, I was not pleased. If it had been our first we never would've had a second time with them. I'm giving them a three because I did have some four and five star experiences even though this one was not. But I want to caution people...couple of things, you have to wrap your own things in plastic. They use the same old quilt coverings to cover your furniture. These coverings sit on the floor of their truck when not in use. I didn't like that a lot of stuff was stacked on top of my leather and suede furniture. Left indentations and a scrape that I can't seem to get rid of. (Even though I wrapped my furniture in protective coverings myself.) They were late the morning of unloading because they didn't realize where they needed to be in terms of city... but the biggest beware is, I took photos of all my items and rooms and sent them all to the business so they could plan what size truck to bring. At the end of the loading day, they came to my husband and said that not everything was going to fit. I can't believe that nobody checked a couple of hours before, did a walk around through the house to see what was left. So they left our old house 3 1/2 hours away to go to our new house with not everything in tow. There was no Plan B. Initially, the owner blamed me for requesting a certain size truck like I would know what size truck, my stuff would fit in! The owner kept asking what I wanted them to do. Well I wanted them to go back and get my stuff. But then they couldn't fit in a date and yes, I would've had to pay more for them to do that. So my husband had to get a truck and find a guy to go back to get the rest of our belongings! Very stressful after moving being very stressful in itself. Very disappointing. I was able to talk to the owner about this. But after talking with so many people about it afterward, who were just shocked by how the whole thing was handled, I thought I better write a review just as a heads up. Friends that I have talked to said that when their movers (not this company) got there, they walked around the house before they even started loading to make sure they brought the right size truck, and one friend said the company sent another truck within 15 minutes of arriving at their house. Another option would've been for us to get a heads up so a U-Haul or other trailer could've been rented so no one would've left the area and had to travel back. Again, I'm just encouraging you to think about all this stuff and I'm encouraging the company to have a Plan B in place for things like this. read more

The move out wen without incident. However the move into our new build showed a lack of care for our furnishings during storage. We were informed that our things would be stored in a climate controlled environment but that wasn't the case. A few dehumidifiers does not equate to climate control. As a result our furniture and most of our belongings were damaged beyond repair by mold and mildew The replacement cost was over $8500. When we informed A1 of our losses they did not respond. I never had hired professional movers before so was a little scared. These guys made everything so easy. They arrived a few minutes early and were friendly and ready to go right off the truck. They were professional and focused and handled my items with care. They made it look so easy! They put the items in my new house exactly where I wanted them and even helped carry some extra items in from the garage. They were great, would recommend them to anyone looking for a mover. This was the best local moves I have had. I have moved 10 times in 10 years. Two of the moves were cross country moves with major moving companies. The family owned business with the family participating in every aspect of the move is great and made the whole experience wonderful. The loading and unloading of my boxes and furniture was efficient and professional. Contacts with Brandon were dealt with with a smile in his voice. I contacted Brian Lohr of A-1 movers to move my household items from my 10x15 storage unit to my condo in DeForest, WI. He quoted me 3-4 hours for 2 guys and $800. The day of the move 3 guys showed up and the rate went from $185 per hour to $277.50. I was assured the bill will even out because there was 3 guys not 2. When they finished they showed me the bill and it doubled from $800 to $1575.00! The rate and the total doubled. This is price gouging folks. Beware, it could happen to you. read more

The guys have a fair hourly rate, but don't move like they do. 2 guys showed up on time and moved our entire (large) upstairs apartment onto their trailer in just over an hour. They were careful and respectful of our things, and very polite and friendly. I spent the last 20 yrs in the furniture/moving business, and I would've given anything to have guys like this work with me. Don't look any further, call these guys. I would NEVER recommend this moving company!!! THE COST WAS FOUR TIMES THE ORIGINAL QUOTE!!! Not only did they break and destroy over a dozen of our belongings, put clearly labeled boxes for instance "kitchen" ended up in the back basement etc we are still searching for where they put our stuff! We ended up having to carry boxes ourselves back upstairs or to the correct rooms etc. Brandon wasn't honest at all about the rate and what he was going to charge. He told us $165/hour and then ended up sending 7 teenagers to the job and charged me $577 PER HOUR!!!! For a move that was 45 minutes away of a small house I paid just under $4,000. Brandon was a total smart ass on the phone as well very unprofessional and had me in tears. Total rip off SCAM. I felt bad for the kids working for him as they said they get paid $11/hour. I even paid for their dinners and paid for them to take breaks!! The first two guys worked hard, they deserve to be paid better by Brandon. Unbelievable. read more

The two gentleman that actually loaded our belongings and unloaded them did GREAT work! I would caution that the owner didn't ask for an inventory list or come to look at our household goods (even after I had suggested both of those things during phone conversations on three occasions). He said he knew the size truck we needed and number of helpers and had looked at the furnishings online. Guess what?? Our household (2650 sq ft home) didn't fit on the truck! His answer: rent a small Uhaul or pay us to do it for another $900. We asked if he would provide a discount to offset some of our costs and aggregation since it was an out of state move. HE DELETED MY REVIEW! Do not be fooled by this shmoozer. Quoted $7k charge $14K. Broken items 30+ antiques, dishes, china, recreation equipment including boat, and more. Professionally packed clearly marked if fragile. Left vehicle 800 miles away. 2 trucks, one entirely unloaded piled into garage, clearly marked with location in house that should have gone. My wife and I are disabled, no way to get to items in garage. Have to buy $5k+ worth items I know are piled somewhere in garage. In comes smooth talking Brandon wanting to compromise (Yeah, compromise on a $14k job his company was to do. He'll reply "I made several efforts" BS. One effort, rep[lace 3 of cheapest items and ruined an antique table "fixing it". NO insurance settlement offered. I would give negative stars. Nothing but a nightmare. The least he could do is respond to my review, NOT DELETE IT, even though his response will be smooth talking BS. Now I will go to BBB. I would NEVER recommend. read more

After contacting 5-7 different piano moving businesses in the Madison area and receiving ZERO responses, I was running short on time to move my antique piano over 100 miles. After receiving a recommendation for A-1 Movers of Sauk Prairie from my co-workers here in Sauk City I decided it was worth a shot. Brandon called me less an hour after I requested a quote online and after a few qualifying questions, not only gave me a fair estimate, but fit me in 2 days later to for the move. Mike and Matt arrived right on schedule and handled my piano with the delicate care it needed. It arrived at our new home in perfect condition and I couldn't have been more pleased with everyone's professionalism. Brandon and his crew were a pleasure to work with from start to finish. Excellent, top notch work from the Portage crew. I can't imagine things going any better. They basically ran the entire time.

I chose A1 due to the high ratings in Yelp. Although the staff was very friendly and courteous, I was very disappointed in the services. Even though I had informed the company of the contents I was moving (3 BR/3 baths, 2 living room sets and lots of stuff accumulated over the years), they didn't send a large enough truck or two trucks (which were needed). I was assured one truck would be sufficient. Their underestimation resulted in scheduling another day to move the remaining contents missed on the first day, thereby causing me to pay additional moving costs. The unanticipated second move day also caused me to miss my niece's wedding ceremony. In addition, the movers scratched the floor in my new condo (which the movers knew about but neglected to tell me), the foot board of my bed was scratched and there is a huge scratch on my cement driveway (I was told the rain would wash the scratch away, which it hasn't). So far, that is the only damage I have found. The people who purchased my former condo asked for a moving recommendation, as did another friend who is moving in the fall and I have steered them away from A1. Overall a poor experience with my move. read more

The only reason I have given one star is because there is no option for no stars. To begin with I was given an estimate that sounded fair. I also knew that it would most likely go up somewhat but little did I know it would double. This is why. The movers came up, looked at my things and said it was going to be more. I said I had expected as much but had a limited amount of funds. They then each took a couple of boxes down and just disappeared for about 20 minutes.They finally came back and told me how much they thought it would be which pretty much matched with I thought. For some reason for quite some time they both carried boxes by hand instead of using a dolly. Even though some were small one of them could have been using a dolly earlier to save time. Finally the truck was loaded and they set out to the new apt. We were about 20 min behind them. They called to say they were having a hard time parking...why?because they do not have a moving truck.They have a pickup with a big horsetrailer type thing that took over a half hour to park. I tried to tell them there was parking in the back. Finally they very carelessly unloaded my belongings. Keep in mind the new place is smaller but there was no need for such carelessness. Now back to the 20 min disappearance and the wasted time spent trying to park that monstrosity, all of that wasted time cost me 130. Their carelessness cost me damages to three pieces of furniture. When I called to report it I was told that the guys who moved me would never do anything like that. I was reduced to tears talking to this person who was bound and determined these guys would never do that. He finally told me he would call me back after talking to them and never did.After I called him back the next wk and submitted pictures as proof he sent me the basic insurance which I had checked however he still has not gotten back to me about the missing 20 min. I strongly encourage you to not hire these people but if you do keep an eye on the time and how they treat your belongings.My move cost double what I was first quoted. read more
