Went today for a Smog check on my 2018 minivan. I've been here more than a few times for different cars I have. They are not the cheapest around, but always got fast service and clear pricing. However, today, I was 4th in line so had to wait quite a long time compared to usual, not their fault. But due to a pricing fairness issue that happened, never before, just today... I left thinking I'm not sure I'll bother coming out so far from home to this place anymore. If your still reading... Here's why. The cashier today was not the usual lady, but a tall slim young man with long hair. He gave him my paperwork and 2 different coupons I had. I asked which coupon would give me the lower price; he said it was a 50 cent difference between them. Fine, give me the better one, but he didn't. At the end, I noticed he used the coupon that was not better. Lastly, once it was time to pay... he showed me the breakdown & final amount. He had included a card payment fee and had card reader cued up for me. But I had $100 bill in my hand and told him I am trying avoid the $2.35 card fee that is on the price breakdown. He said no problem as I waited for him to redo the invoice and print another one. The price dropped 50 cents. I told him that the card fee is showing more than that. He said no it isn't. He took my $100 bill and handed back a $20. This place charges a pretty high fee for Smog checks, esp. if you don't have a coupon. Plus, they tack on $20 extra for being a Star Certified required. Yet, this guy wants to charge me a few dollars extra on top of their normal chaespecially. The service itself was fine, however when I went to pay and include a $30-off coupon I had found on their website, I was denied the discount. The tech first said the coupon was for "cash payments only". When I pointed to a second coupon that stated "$30 off credit card purchases", he stated that since I had not told him I had the coupon before he wrote the bill of sales/estimate, he couldn't apply the discount. Total bait-and-switch. I came in with their Valpak coupon for a $31.75 Smog Check (Cash Offer). My car is an Acura RDX, so per the fine print, I expected a $20 "SUV/Luxury" upcharge plus the $8.25 State Certificate. Instead, despite paying in CASH, they ignored the advertised cash special entirely. With the certificate, they charged me $80.00. They essentially overcharged me by $20 by "stacking" fees and ignoring their own advertised cash price. If you have an SUV or a "luxury" brand stay away. Micro-manage much? I felt like a 7 year old under the disapproving stare of my parent when I was a kid just being a kid. I barely parked my car and the manager came out and asked me to correct my parking as I wasn't within the lines (guilty!). It got worse. I got scolded to taking a look at the smog check screen while my car was being smogged (guilty!) and was also asked more than once to hang out inside the waiting room (guilty with an explanation: I opted to hang out outside when the technician could not figure out how to turn off my car alarm). Aside my from less than satisfactory interaction with the manager, my smog check went well. Damonte multi-tasked smogging my car and another car in the 2 bay shop and got it done. Note this shop has online coupons and a USPS mail marketing campaign offering a discount for returning customers. In other words, no need to pay posted prices. Google is a friend to your wallet/purse. Smog certificate price is separate from smog check price (standard no matter which shop you go to) and an unannounced 3% upcharge if you pay via credit card that I noticed on my receipt after payment. I smogged an Acura but didn't get dinged on a luxury tax other Yelp reviewers complained about. I've had multiple cars previously smogged at this shop but might look elsewhere the next time around. Before starting, he told me the price upfront so there were no questions or problems after the smog was done. I brought in a coupon for $29 (NOTE the fine print... +10 for SUV, +10 for hybrid, etc. and as always the CA certificate fee is always separate so +8) but I ended up paying close to 60. Which is great compared to the other shops in the area. People seem to get upset when they think it's 29 out the door but they clearly didn't read the coupon details. Don't believe the $31 price, this is False Advertising They make sure that you wait in line (they do not have 3 stations nor 3 techs ready to service you, as advertised). Then once you finally get to your turn, they have you wait in car (so you can't check prices) then you pull your car in to their service bay, then they allow you to finally go to the office to hear of the price. That office guy then will jokingly tell you they have a $40 upcharge for your type of vehicle and smog. Found Smog Shop on Yelp search. I called and was quoted a price. Very confusing to find. You drive to the rear and wait until your motioned to drive in. Then you walk through the garage part Into a very small waiting room where you wait for your test results. Same person that's does the testing rings you up or at least that happened with me. I was then charged 10.00 more. I did Yelp check in which gave a substantial discount but it was still expensive. I advised the employee of this and he said I was not quoted correctly. I could have gone to a closer smog place for the same price. There were no extra additions for my car that the person on the phone missed. Straight forward smog.
