I love businesses like this one. I was able to make an appointment online to get my car smogged, and when I showed up for my appointment, the person was there ready for me. He took my key and went straight to work. In less than ten minutes, I paid (around $90) that same person and was out the door. Speedy services like these should be the gold standard. I chose this location because my wife smogged her car here two years ago, and recently, she received a reminder in the mail with a $20 coupon. I thought that was smart and thoughtful for them to do that. I started going to Smog King in San Ramon a couple of years ago after the shop I was going to closed and I went to a different shop that was very slow and I ended up drading the long wait at that shop. Then I took a recommendation to try Smog King. Owner Brian states "Our # 1 area is Customer Service". It didn't take long to prove it to me. I took 3 cars in for Smog Check in the last 30 days. Had a 11:45 AM appointment set up for my 1984 vehicle. I had called and they had given me a $100 flat rate for that vehicle. I arrived promptly at 11:45. I tried to confirm that we're going to be doing this for the agreed to rate as the rate posted on their wall was around $129. They denied they ever had told me the $100 flat rate so the back-and-forth continued with some yelling from the supposed Customer Service person by the name of Chris. This person needs to be fired from this business if this person is not representing their business in a professional cordial manner to their customers. I still have the receipt from two years earlier when they had done it for $88 on the same vehicle. I do realize prices do go up as they all do when you agree to something you should abide by it and not deny it after the customer shows up. Separately don't yell at the customer. I believe the owner of this business is Brian. Brian - if you're reading this, you need to tell your employee "Chris" - to change his approach to Customer Service. 30 minutes later, I had my smog check done and completed for what do you know $100 at BesTech down the street who got it done in 15 minutes. I could've gotten it done for $90 at Ace Auto Repair down the street where I take my car for maintenance and they do a fantastic job but due to my time constraints and availability of the stall, I decided to do it at BesTech. You have a lot of competition so I suggest you do better job and when you make a promise or give an estimate follow through. read more

The following is a summary of my interaction with this establishment from 04/14/24: I had made an appointment for a standard smog inspection scheduled at 1:45 pm via the listed phone number: 925-820-5665. When I arrived at 1:45, I waited for a few minutes at the counter to check-in for my appointment. The technician came inside from the work area and gave me a look I can only describe as 'utter contempt' and stated that "you may as well just leave now because I don't have any more time to do a smog". I noted to the technician that I had a confirmed appointment scheduled at 1:45 pm. He replied that, "there is no way you have an appointment" and stomped over to his computer. Now I'm someone that doesn't particularly enjoy being gaslighted by people and thus was done speaking to this person at this point and left. This brief interaction was absolutely one of the worst customer service experiences to date for me. I understand that it may be busy, and I understand that this person may not want to be working on a Sunday afternoon, but this is a level of poor service that even I am not able to empathize with (and I deal with upset customers frequently in my line of work as well). If he simply told me that he's overbooked, or that he's just not going to be able to do it today like a normal person would, that would be more than enough for me to reschedule to a differnt date and try again -- but I guess a basic level of human decency and respect is considered too much. Suffice it to say I will be taking my business elsewhere in the future and I recommend that others do the same. Apparently a confirmed appointment is only taken as a suggestion here. read more

In addition to competent work in a timely manner, I have a unique story why Smog King is near & dear to my heart. 5 1/2 years ago, my Jeep was stolen here in San Ramon while my wife & I were back in NY celebrating the birth of our 1st granddaughter. 3 weeks later it was recovered by the Martinez PD & I was able to have it towed back to SR. Although not badly damaged, the thief had hot-wired the ignition thus enabling the Jeep to be started w/o a key. As it was on a Saturday, & my mechanic is closed on the weekend, I couldn't get it repaired for a couple of days. Living in an apt. complex (where it had been stolen from) I didn't want the Jeep unsecured. After being turned away from the storage facility where I'd rented a storage space for several years @ $350/mo citing flimsy insurance concerns (thanks for nothing SafKeep) I noticed Smog King (where I got all my cars regularly smogged) was open. When I explained my predicament, they were OK with locking-in my vulnerable Jeep until Monday morning when I could then take it to my mechanic.
