What a terrific restaurant and welcoming staff. I have walked by A La Turca so many times, but until recently, haven't tried it. Should have come sooner, but I'll be back again soon. Great food. We started with a cheese and spinach borek, a pastry that was light and flaky--it felt like it was composed of 50 layers of philo dough, delicious. For mains we had doner plate, which was an ample and filling serving of shredded beef and lamb with rice, salad, and tzadiki dipping source. Amazing and less than $20. The other dish was quite unique, consisting of grilled lamb inside lavash bread, covered with a rich and buttery tomato sauce and yogurt. One of the best meat dishes I've had in years! I have been coming to A La Turca regularly for two decades and I've only had a good meals. It's a family owned place. Keep in mind sometimes the service experience is inconsistent, and ithe location can be inconsistent too with parking and general safety. I love the pides because they make their own dough. During my last visit, my dining partner got the golzeme with cheese (a thinner dough) and it appeared to be a pre-made tortilla , however they said it was still delicious like a "Turkish quesadilla". My pitas were so soggy that they were inedible. The manager's excuse was that they had been putting the pitas on top of the salad for years and there had never been a problem. They didn't realize that you can't put bread or anything like that on top of the salad and that it would turn into dough. They tasted good but incorrect packaging caused my product to go to waste and the lady who answered the phone said she was the one responsible for that and she was very rude. read more

We stopped here for dinner Friday night before our concert at Great American Music Hall. It was walking distance so it was very convenient. There were plenty of tables and we were greeted and seated very quickly. We tried the beyti kebap and regular Turkish soda. The soda reminded me of the regular ramune flavor I think it was supposed to be mixed berry flavor but I'm not sure. I definitely recommend the beyti kebap. We had lunch here today with our son and his girlfriend to introduce them to what we think is a true SF gem. We love this place having dined there six or seven times in the past few years. The menu is authentically Turkish. So is the staff. We haven't had a dish here that wasn't great. They have Turkish wine too, which is hard to find. The downside is the neighborhood. Not great but not terrible. Certainly feels safe. Today we had manti which is available only on W and Sunday. It was great. A super yummy Turkish place for some great lamb! The lamb chops are somewhat on the small side, but they make up for it on the other dishes I always get. The deep fried eggplant with tomato sauce and garlic yogurt is a great alternative for ANY veggie lovers. Another appetizer that is a must is the Ispanakli Borek. So much goodness here! The hummus and dolma were exceptional! The pita like bread they served up was warm, fresh and flavorful. The array of dishes don't even hint at the abundance of yummy dishes they offer. If you like beef, lamb, or chicken this is the place for you. We (6) wanted hearty food and did they every deliver , we had plates with beef and cheese in a dough envelope, and my friend choose beef plates that had amazing accompanying salads with lemon dressing, and vegetables. The service was friendly and seems family run. Everyone that served us was super friendly quick to respond for any request and very polite! The decor adds to the ambience of a fun, local establishment and is great for 1, 2, or in our case 6. We like the low noise level, the diverse crowd, and friendly patrons. This is a well love destination for many. Call ahead for larger groups they are know to reserve a table. They and upper area that would be good for larger groups or a birthday celebration. I would eat this as a death row meal... I'm not kidding, it really is that good. You should be ordering the combo grill dish if you know what you're about- It truly doesn't get any better. I have been one time before when my friends took me during Ramadan last year and it was just ok. I decided to give this place another try because my friend took me here and is very picky. I ordered the shredded chicken plate with rice and salad. My friend ordered the Iskender kebab. The salad was pretty blah and the chicken was dry. The only think that I ate was the rice . It was the best thing on this plate! It was light, moist and tasted of butter. Overall, I would not come back. The dine out was open, however, the tables were dirty. Besides the customer service was lacking and we had to ask for napkins, utensils and hot sauce twice because the cashier forgot to put it in the bag. Was craving some Kunefe and came across this lovely place on Yelp. Also decided to add on an order of Sigara Boregi because it's something I've enjoyed before in Turkish cuisine. While I was waiting for the takeout order to be completed, I was given a hot cup of yummy tea. That was nice of the person since it was cold and raining out. Everything was wonderfully prepared. The sigara boregi were absolutely delicious. I had originally just started off with just half the portion, then ended up eating them all. I had asked for the Kunefe to be made without pistachios due to allergies. It was made fresh to order in front of me and I really enjoyed eating it at home. The vermicelli tasted so good crispy and toasted on the outside and soft on the inside. This dessert was introduced to me not too long ago and it has easily become one of my favs! The owner (I think) personally called me and waited for more than 15 minutes after locking up for the driver to arrive and to personally ensure I got my food, even though I told her I could just cancel. So nice. As for the food, ordered the baba ganoush, the lahmacun, the chicken shish kebab, and the lentil soup. The baba ganoush was smoky and delicious but the lahmacun stood out as the winner for me. Think thin dough with meat, veggies, and spices on top. Shish kebab was flavorful and lentil soup was comforting though relatively mild. Good people and good food. Will be ordering again. read more
