Our guests raved about the cupcakes. A guest that lives in Honolulu demanded the name of the bakery because she said she had never tasted a cupcake this good! My tier cake was the strawberry and creme and my cupcakes were the oreo, lilikoi creme, and coconut pineapple. There were several compliments on the coconut pinapple and oreo. I am a huge fan of strawberry filling and white cake, and my tier cake was perfection. I also do not eat a lot of frosting, but the buttercream was not too sweet. My husband does not like cake and he had two cupcakes! I found the cake prices to be more than reasonable. The additional costs for me were the fresh orchid decorations, cupcake holder, and delivery. It was more than my budget, but well worth the additional expenses. My wedding was a destination wedding, and Kristin had wonderful advice about delivery times. They suggested that they deliver later in the day to keep the cake fresh. My coordinator even said that usually bakeries will not deliver late in the day, and that this was a great service Kristin was offering. I cannot say enough good things about A Cake Life. We were very happy with our cake from A Cake Life. We told Kristen exactly what we wanted, and she totally delivered. Our cake was beautiful--exactly as we envisioned--and tasted so good too. Everyone loved it. We did two tiers with two different flavors of cake and filling. We wanted a semi-naked cake with white cake on the bottom, and marbled cake on the top, and we were a little worried that the difference in cake color would show through. However, Kristin eased our worries when we spoke with her and on the day of, the difference was not noticeable at all. The only hiccup we had was that we were a little absentminded and did not realize that we needed to reserve a delivery spot as well (it was not automatically booked with the booking of a cake for the wedding day). Kristin and I communicated purely by email, I was unable to visit her shop for a tasting and went solely based off her Yelp reviews. You did not lead me astray Yelpers. We got a 2-tier cake, top tier was lemon with lilikoi and bottom tier was guava with fresh strawberry filling. When her and her helper arrived on Saturday morning, they were cheerful and professional. I saw the cake and almost cried because it was so perfect. I let her do her own creative thing and she really exceeded what I imagined. After they carried the cake to the party room, they asked if I needed help unloading my car. Let me repeat that, they wanted to help me unload my car! I did not accept the help, but was grateful that they were willing to help. She didn't leave until she made sure I really didn't need help. That to me, goes above and beyond. Now, the good part... We hid the cake in the fridge until it was time to sing. The "AAAHHH's" and "WOW's" filled the room. I think anyone with a cell phone in reach was snapping photos. Then the cake was cut, and everyone began to get their plates of cake. The room was awfully quiet. I ordered from Cake Life for my daughter's first birthday about two years ago and I was very happy with the process and the end result of her themed cake design. I decided to approach A Cake Life again for my sister's baby shower cake which I felt confident that they would do a great job. I ordered a one-tier themed, devil's cake with cookies and cream filling cake and four dozen galaxy donuts in clear boxes for guest favors ($2.50/donut + $1 per packaging). There was a lot of back and forth in email to get the design and exact order exactly how I wanted since we didn't do a consultation and Kristen's responsiveness was very quick. My husband picked up the order the morning of the party since I was busy preparing the room, and when I first saw the donuts I was very disappointed as they were about half the size they should have been. When we cut the cake, the filling was white and not cookies and cream. Lastly, the design of the character was slightly wrong. I followed up after the party via email telling her that our guests complimented her work and also mentioned these errors, hoping at the very least for a reply. I asked her if she could do anything since the donuts were obviously not what I paid for. I also wanted her employees to be mindful of the errors so it wouldn't happen to other customers. I would have expected better customer service and professionalism being that they are an award winning bakery, but I guess loyal, returning customers aren't a priority. I saw a picture of their Mothers Day dessert box on Instagram and based on reviews on yelp we thought this would be a great company to cater our reception dessert table. However, the communication skill of the staff leaves a lot to be desired. In addition, they do not read email responses or attachments well. They also dont respond at all once they know that they may have lost your business. You would think that a local business with stellar reviews would make some attempt to retain a customer when they know what the problem is. But this company could care less. They nickel and dime their customers with additional fees such as a Zoom call consultation of $20.00 (and they make it almost impossible to communicate via email, which is free, because of their inability to read) and a sample bento of $28.00. They also charge a deposit of between $300.00 and $400.00 for their trays and decorative serving plates AND you must return them within 3 days cleaned and unbroken. And delivery in town not more than 2 miles away from their business is $100.00. We planned on purchasing the Signature Dessert Bar for 120 - 150 guests because we liked the choices and presentation and inquired. The emails went well and we set a Zoom call for $20.00 until I created a document that spelled out each choice that we could make; even down to the detail of the frosting style on the cake and cupcakes. Ones we canceled, the email communication went south. We also asked about the sample bento which when we followed the directions on their website did not have the option to buy it; their response was that we could order by phone; which they never answer. They asked the same questions that the document could have answered and they failed at any salutations in the emails which is very unprofessional; you are never too familiar with a potential customer until they ARE your customer and youve established a relationship. We decided not to go with them and to create our own dessert style table using a smaller less dramatic business to cater it. The sad thing for them is that we would have gladly paid the prices they wanted had they been more communicative, professional and actually knew how to treat customers. read more

I am absolutely a crazy cat lady. A Cake Life had posted an adorable cat cake years ago. Once I started planning my wedding, I knew I had to have it! I am so happy with it! Kristin was very responsive via email. I live on the mainland, and she did a great job of making sure she understood exactly what I wanted with the cake (colors, fruit etc). We also ended up ordering a bunch of chocolate covered strawberries from them. I was a little nervous about the timing since we got married very early in the morning and my sister-in-law went to pick it up, but they were open and the cake arrived at our reception without issue. I ordered a cake for my destination wedding. I ordered a package that came with a two-tiered cake and 24 cupcakes. You could have different flavors in each of the tiers and each dozen of cupcakes. I chose the pineapple cream filled coconut cake for both layers as it sounded delicious. Kristen, the owner, said it was the most popular flavor for destination weddings. We had red velvet cream filled cupcakes and butter cake with strawberry cream filling and buttercream icing for the cupcakes. Working with A Cake l Life was very easy. I sent pictures of what I wanted and Kristen let me know if it was within my price point. The cake that she made was exactly like the picture I showed her and exactly what I wanted. It was moist and delicious. It was so good that I decided to take the bottom layer which went untouched, on my nine hour flight home two days later. I did not have the ability to refrigerate it during those two days, or on the flight but the cake made it home and was just as good as on my wedding day. And I even got to save a couple of chunks for our anniversary. The rest of that cake went down in gastrological history. Everything was arranged via email and phone prior to my wedding. I arranged for drop off since I didn't feel comfortable transporting a cake. There was a mixup at the hotel, with the cake delivery. I rented a penthouse suite at the Grand Islander, which had just opened 3 days before at the Hilton Waikiki Village. I left specific written instructions at the bell desk to open my suite, room 3710 for A Cake Life to deliver and set up my order. I got married on the beach behind the Hilton Waikiki village and when I returned, there was no cake in my room. I immediately contacted Kristin who said she had dropped it off. She sent me a picture of the cake set up in a room that looked similar, but was definitely not my room. I explained to her that the cake was not in my room. She stated that they turned right after they got off the elevator and to set up the cake. Well, my room was to the left. It was a bit of a fiasco in the moment, because I didn't know where the cake and cupcakes were. My husband and I went down to the desk and spoke with the person who Kristen described let her in the room. While I was down there telling the hotel manager and said bellman that we were going to go into all the vacant rooms on that floor, Kristen and her assistant showed up to save the day! This was quite unexpected, and above and beyond great service. They were able to direct us to the room where the items were placed and then moved it all into my room. The error was on the hotel's part, as they were given the proper information and did not follow through correctly. My husband and I are extremely grateful for Kristen's kindness in showing up to remedy the situation. Kristen was more upset than I was that the cake was temporarily "missing" and had tears to prove it. She kept apologizing, even though none of this was her fault. I assured everyone involved that since I was an older bride, it was not major for me. I did not need my day to be "perfect". It will definitely give us something to talk about. I am still overwhelmed by the quality of Kristin's work, her kindness and customer service. All of this and I ordered a low-cost "Lite" package.
