Restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating is in front of this square.

I ate dinner here. I would say come here for a drink, tea, coffee, pastries. The meals are not good. I ordered a steak and the meat was mushy, kind of like it was shredding, and tasteless. The coffee blend sauce they used over the meat was good. Very odd texture. I said no blood on my steak and it came bloody. The poached pear dessert came cold. My waiter's service was mediocre. However there were a couple of other waiter that I spoke to that were phenomenal. This place has indoor and outdoor dining. It is smack in the center of one of the most touristy and busiest street. It is at the 2nd to last stop of where the yellow tram ends. So the staff is constantly busy. Free WiFi. No outlets to charge phone.

The food is ok. We just had drinks and desserts but they have a full menu for all meals. Definetly more of a tourist location with a hustle and bustle vibe. Still worth visiting and stepping off the busy streets. This is definitely located in a highly trafficked tourist area. The ambiance is very lively and fun but very crowded.

Beautiful and charming! Service was excellent but lunch was not good. The pastries are amazing. Note the bathroom needs urgent renovation/deep cleaning

Always a busy place, sometimes you'll wait in line a few minutes but it's absolutely worth the wait. Celebrating 120 years next year it's one of the best coffee houses in the city. Neighbor to Livraria Bertrand (the oldest bookstore in the world), Brasileira do Chiado, as we natives call it, is a people-watching spot as writers, poets, politicians all stop by for a coffee and their delicious pastries. There's even a statue to Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa you can sit next to. Don't miss it.

Came here mostly to take in the historic interior and have a quick snack after a long day of travel. The coffee was good but the breakfast sandwich was okay, mostly because it was somewhat cold. Not sure if that is how that dish is supposed to be served.

Came just for dessert and coffee. The caramelized pear was pretty good, and I really liked the crumble with it. The tiramisu didn't taste like tiramisu and seemed more liked biscuit with cream.

We stopped by here at the end of our trip in Lisbon . I heard it's famous all over Portugal . The decor is 1920's . Very quaint . They were very busy . Not a lot of sitting , but they do have outside. We next to another couple. We enjoyed our coffee and pastries . Service was good .

Just because it is close to the one of the oldest library in Portugal, we stop by for coffee as it was getting cold... The place was built 1905 as their table napkins marked it. Coffee was great but not the dessert choices.

    Ham and cheese croissant.

Great seating outside but the food was bla. Croissant was stale. Ham and cheese tasteless. Cesar salad good but dressing not like normal Cesar. A little sweet More like ranch. No anchovies.

This is a great historical Cafe opened since 1888. There is a status of a famous author outside the restaurant. The ambience inside is very nice. We had the Portugese Tart (2.2 Euro) and Docaria Conventual (4.9 Euro). They were delicious.

It is very beautiful inside. Good music. I only had coffee there because I had just eaten somewhere else but I was walking by and couldn't help going into because it's so beautiful...so I had coffee!

Love the aesthetic of A Brasileira. Food was decent but nothing remarkable. Service was a bit slow for being fully staffed on a weekday during opening.

Too hot for coffee. Epic nonetheless

What makes it special is watching the pastries being handmade right in front of you, which adds a level of freshness and craftsmanship that you can actually taste. The service was super fast and friendly. The pastel de nata came out perfectly, with that delicate flaky crust and warm custard that just hits differently when you know it was made moments ago. The espresso was equally impressive, rich and smooth, and the two together make for a simple but near perfect combination. If you are in the area, this is an easy and very satisfying stop.

The crust was super flaky and the tart was nice and warm out of the oven, but I didn't like the flavor of the custard. I did forget to add cinnamon to the top, but I don't think it would have helped me personally. The woman who stood next to me at the counter had a nearly orgasmic experience next to me, so it's obvious that my taste buds are apparently off. I loved the patience of the server, who got confused when I told her I wanted to eat in but wanted to take water to go. Note to self...Portuguese folks want to have their "to go" as "takeaway." What I also didn't know was that there was no place to sit!! I scooted down the counter just like all the other folks to watch the bakers prep the next gozillion pastries for the day. That was interesting. Then, I didn't know how to bus my dishes. I just left them on the counter like all the other folks and went away. I wouldn't skip going because of my personal taste buds, though. Enjoy it for yourself and let me know if you have a different opinion than I did!

From the moment we were seated, Cristina took her time in welcoming us and explaining every item on the menu. We got extremely lucky in beating the dinner rush and submitting our orders in. The subsequent groups who came in were simply turned away or quoted at least an hr wait. Even with full house, our foods came in a reasonable time. With her recommendation, we went with seafood bake for 2 and BBQ pork in 4 diff cuts (we wanted to try a little bit of everything). The seafood bake was beyond amazing - there were literally 4 diff types of WHOLE fish (cod, salmon, bass?, can't tell the last one), along with dozen of fresh shrimp with shells still on and clams! The pot felt bottomless with seafood. It took us literally an hr just to power through this dish. The seafood bake's sauce was so yummy that my husband started throwing in his side potato to soak up the flavor. Towards the end, he straight up spooned and drank it. The bbq pork was so juicy and flavorful! My husband really enjoyed the bacon cut - fatty yet crispy. The side salad was so refreshing with its light, house made dressing. Honestly, we couldn't be any happier with our dinner! Too bad we were so stuffed that we didn't get to try their desserts. What an incredible meal! Amazing food and heartwarming service - Cristina even took the time to come by our table to check and chat with us during dinner rush - we couldn't ask for more. Price was a steal especially for how much food we got - around 50 Euros. Would definitely return if we ever revisit Lisbon!

So, service can be a little disorganized, as they both juggle entertaining, cooking, remembering orders, giving tourists advice, telling stories about the dishes, etc. They treat each table like a new group of friends, with individualized service & chatter, which can draw things out a bit, but overall provides a memorable experience and food that's worth the wait. The food was very traditional, hearty (meaning: potatoey!) and well-priced. It's CASH ONLY, so don't over order if you can't pony up. The traditional dish of mashed potatoes, bread, and fish (like a savory bread pudding) was really interesting, but greasy and filling, so be warned. We also liked the seafood stew, and local meat & cheese plate. Affordable wines are available AND they have a Yelp check-in offer for a free welcome drink, a very nice surprise. For warm, personalized service and old-school Portugese recipes, you won't be led astray at Madragoa.
