Almost a year ago, we purchased an A & W gift basket at an AAUW fundraiser to raise money for scholarships for local young ladies. We noticed there were two gift cards for what appears to be the last franchise of this long storied company in our area. Driving to Lodi, the birthplace of great root beer and most satisfactory burgers, we were not disappointed. After parking and entering, we noticed how clean the parking lot was, as was the store. (Including the bathrooms). The staff helped us to redeem our prizes and we were seated among LOTS of cool A & W memorabilia from times past. While ordering they even asked us if we wanted the onions raw or cooked. The food came out promptly, with a smile and completely on point. I am not a fan of fast food. We were doing a local Lodi day and a native friend took us here. A&W started in Lodi. They have a museum case with memorabilia through the years. A great photo op with the bear as well. They still have the car hop area. We ate inside. The girl who helped us was so nice! Wish I got her name. I got a kid meal since I wasn't very hungry and ofcourse we all had root beer. My friend got a frosty mug. A fun, local history stop while in the cute town of Lodi. It's all about the root beer and the ice cold mugs. Ordered the fish sandwich and onion rings. The sandwich stayed hot for the longest time and the onion rings are rings. French fries were excellent too and my friend enjoyed the burger. It was also great seeing the items in their mini museum since this restaurant has been here forever. The Manager at A&W is extremely rude and low educated. Anybody who is willing to pay $ 3.50 for a cup of coffee doesn't deserve a respectful treatment from that manager. We've been here twice, and both times were a delight. The first time we drove through, there was a funny recording with a French accent, and the second time, it was a pirate. The workers were funny too. Appreciate their spirited good energy. Their onion rings with Papa Sauce are my favorite, so crunchy and satisfying. All of our cheeseburgers were juicy and tasty. This was my second time going to A&W in Lodi. I have great memories of the one that used to be in Sacramento long ago by my parents house. It was also the first time my wife went with me to try the food. The food is great and she really liked it a lot. But we had a small incident. She is lactose intolerant, and we realized a little late that she didn't have her pill. As I raced to the counter, at the same time the food was coming out. This is a moment I wish I could give the place a 6th star. The lady bringing the food out was very understanding and kind. They remade the burger with no cheese. I'd recommend it for the food, but I recommend it more for the staff. They are all extremely courteous and helpful. Go for the good food and the hospitality. It is well worth the trip! read more

On a Saturday morning in Late March at 10:30am we finally arrived here for early lunch. There was only one person before us. The ambiance was nice like I was in the 60's. It has 2 glass shelves of nostalgia a&w merchandise and everywhere. The staff person was nice and took our orders. I ordered double cheeseburger combo with fries and large glass mug of A&W root beer. The root bear taste so fresh in a frosted cup compared from a can. The burger taste good with crispy fries. I got full and couldn't finished my mother's onion rings. They weren't allowing indoor dining at the time of our visit but there was a lot of past memorial decor that was nice to look at while waiting for our food order. We love coming here. Food is always fresh and delicious, staff is friendly, and restaurant is clean. Here is my complaint. The last 2 times we have been there the homeless sneak into the bathrooms and have stayed in them the entire time we were there. This is not the staffs fault. They are busy taking care of the customers. PLEASE lock the bathrooms and give the customers a code or something. This way the homeless will stop coming in. I just stopped here to grab the best cheese curds ever made anywhere in the history of cheese, and I cannot believe I have never reviewed A&W! I have been coming to this restaurant for over 40 years (that is unfortunately not a typo) and they never disappoint. Their classic burgers, delicious fries and root beer shakes are a part of my childhood. When I was young, I used to love that they had a firepit inside the restaurant (which has since been remodeled) and have the fondest memories of getting their little 25 cent root beer suckers to go. I remember attending classic car shows in their parking lot as a teenager and even now this place is full of memorabilia. A & W is the ultimate nostalgia restaurant! When my son was young he would devour their fish and chips and always ask to buy a gallon of their root beer to bring home. If you are a fan of root beer this place is a must try; there is nothing else like it. Now that I don't eat meat, I still visit A&W regularly for their cheese curds and fries. They are absolutely the best anywhere. Anyone who knows me knows I ALWAYS post photos of food but I literally scarfed those curds down so fast there is nothing left, so forgive me.
